The Central Secretariat - Sarita Vihar section of the line was opened on 3 October 2010 and was extended to Badarpur on 14 January 2011. The line was extended from Central Secretariat up to Mandi House on 26 June 2014 and further extended to ITO on 8 June 2015. The line was further extended to Kashmere Gate metro station via Delhi Gate, Jama Masjid and Lal Qila on 28 May 2017. The stretch between ITO and Kashmere Gate metro station is popularly known as the Heritage Line. This line acts as a parallel link for those, who travel in the heavily used Yellow Line and connects the interior parts of South Delhi, a little of Central Delhi to the satellite town of Faridabad.[11] An extension southwards till Escorts Mujesar in Faridabad was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 6 September 2015.[12] An extension southwards till Raja Nahar Singh in Ballabhgarh was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 19 November 2018.

History

The Violet Line was originally planned to open in March 2010.[13] On 12 July 2009, a portion of a bridge under construction collapsed when its cantilever pier collapsed on load of launching girder at Zamrudpur, near East of Kailash, on the Central Secretariat Badarpur corridor. Six people were killed and 15 others injured.[14] The day after, on 13 July 2009, a crane that was removing the debris collapsed, and with a bowling pin effect collapsed two other nearby cranes, injuring six.[15]

An extension from the Badarpur-end of the line was opened on 6 September 2015 to cater to the satellite city of Faridabad. This is the second line to cross the Delhi-Haryana border after the Yellow Line to Gurgaon. This extension runs fully elevated for 13.87 km and has 9 stations.[12]

Extension to Ballabhgarh (Raja Nahar Singh metro station) was opened on 19-Nov-2018.[16]

The depot is in Ajronda, adjacent to Neelam Chowk Ajronda metro station.[17]

DMRC have placed an order for additional rolling stock for the line. The Delhi Metro phase III project was planned to have more than 1,800 coaches by the year 2015-16. Projecting the needs, additional 60 coaches will be required for the Faridabad Line and 32 more coaches will be required for the Green Line extension.

gollark: The software side is trivial but you have to write a lot of """good""" questions.
gollark: I could write my own if I could be bothered, which I cannot.
gollark: I mostly support all technology ever, but I think their questions about it were silly.
gollark: Oh wait, I actually can edit my results, nice.
gollark: And it apparently took me vaguely indicating support of some government intervention in markets as 43% supportive of a planned economy, which is very no.
