Kitchen of the Palace of Shadows

The kitchen was a large room on the ground floor of the Palace of Shadows. It was designed to cater for a vast number of staff that once lived in the palace.

History

Prior to -59 ᴇ.ʏ., the palace was in use as the administrative heart of Sanctaphrax. This meant it required a kitchen fit to feed the masses of academics and servants who worked and studied within the palace.

Between -59 ᴇ.ʏ. and 1 ᴇ.ʏ., the kitchen was mostly unused, only serving Tweezel, the curator and sole inhabitant of the palace. From 1 ᴇ.ʏ., Welma Thornwood and Tweezel used the kitchen to prepare the meals of Linius Pallitax and his daughter Maris.

In 15 ᴇ.ʏ., Maris and Welma cooked Wodgiss spiced scones in the kitchen[1], and it was destroyed by fire a few days later when the Palace of Shadows burnt down.

Layout

The kitchen was located on the ground floor of the palace, at the back of the building. In one wall was a small back door which lead outside.[2] The kitchen was three storeys tall, with the kitchen gallery offering a view down on it from the second floor and a vaulted stone ceiling above.[1]

Inside, was an array of huge machinery, including vast ovens, boilers and broilers. There was also a cooking-range used for small-scale cooking.[1] This was possibly the only piece of equipment still in use after -59 ᴇ.ʏ..
