Balcony-chamber
The balcony-chamber was a large room on the sixth floor of the Palace of Shadows that was used as a general living-room by the residents of the palace.
History
The chamber was built in the early First Age of Flight, but was left unused from -59 ᴇ.ʏ. until 1 ᴇ.ʏ., when Linius Pallitax moved into the palace and made his enthronement speech on the balcony outside.
For the next 14 years, it was used as a living-room by Linius, his daughter Maris, and her nanny Welma. In 15 ᴇ.ʏ. it was the place where Maris would meet her future husband, Quintinius Verginix, but the room was destroyed by fire a couple of weeks later when the Palace of Shadows burnt down.
Layout
The chamber was a vast hall located on the sixth floor of the palace. On the southern wall was a set of tall glass doors leading out onto the balcony, behind a set of lace curtains.[1]
Elsewhere on the walls were at least two doors. One door lead out onto the corridor[2], and another lead to a small staircase up the East turret[3]. On the north wall, there was a vast fireplace, however from -59 ᴇ.ʏ., open fires were no longer lit there, and instead, a small stove was placed there for warmth.
The rest of the wall space was occupied by inlaid wooden panels separated by tall pillars and arches. Each was decorated by a multitude of different types of coloured wood in detailed patterns. The room was lit by torches and lamps on the walls, as well as multiple chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.[4]
The floor space was occupied by a large redoak table at the southern end, and a cluster of armchairs and hanging-sofas around a rug by the fireplace took up the space at the north end. However, most of the room was left bare, in order to emphasise the scale of how large it was.[4]
