- Badass Beard
- Badass Long Hair
- The Big Guy / The Brute: Depends on his Face/Heel status.
- Bodyguard Betrayal: Inverted, as HBK turned on him for overshadowing him. Diesel would eventually return the favor in March 1996.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: One of the most infamous examples in wrestling history, he's one of the four wrestlers who publicly said buh-bye to Kayfabe with the Curtain Call.
- Finishing Move: Power Bomb
- Genius Bruiser
- The Giant
- Heterosexual Life Partners and Ho Yay: He and Scott Hall are some of wrestling's longest running HLP's. There have been quite a number of eyebrows raised by the comment Kevin made that he'd have no problem doing a gay angle if it was with Scott.
- Hot Dad

- Psycho Sidekick: Dink

Goldust (Dustin Patrick Runnels) 1990-1991, 1995-1999, 2001-2003, 2005-2006, 2008-2012
- Ambiguously Gay: Though it could be argued that that was all part of his mindgames to get into his opponent's head.
- What Could Have Been: The character was supposed to be the first openly gay wrestler, and was portrayed as one for about a month (his first major feud was sending love letters to Razor Ramon). However, gay rights groups got upset over a gay person also being "evil," so Marlena was introduced and it all became "mindgames."

- Rage Against the Author / Real Life Writes the Plot: Dustin got tired of being Goldust at one point and tried to be a born-again Christian wrestler. The gimmick sadly didn't take, in part because the WWE didn't care and in part because it was just him in a t-shirt and blue jeans just preaching before matches. Even when Dustin went to WCW and TNA, he never (or they never let him) tried the gimmick again.
- Red Baron: The Bizarre One.
- Tourette's Shitcock Syndrome: After getting "electrocuted", thankfully it died down and went away permanently later on.
- Wrestling Family: Son to "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, older brother to Cody Rhodes and ex-husband to Terri Runnels/Marlena.
Hakushi 1995-1998

- Catchphrase: He had "Hey Yo!" and "Say hello to da Bad Guy.", among others.
- Disproportionate Retribution: Used to flip his shit when someone broke his toothpick.
- Even the Guys Want Him: Subverted with Goldust, as it was merely a mind game to help him capture the Intercontinental title.
- Fake Nationality: Billed as a Cuban immigrant. He's not.
- Finishing Move: The Razor's Edge (Cross Power Bomb)
- Heterosexual Life Partners and Ho Yay: With Kevin Nash, for something like seventeen years.
- Off the Wagon: Perpetually. His battles with alcohol (and various other controlled substances) are well known.

- Cool Mask: As The Sultan.
- Cool Shades: As Rikishi Fatu.
- Dark-Skinned Blond: After the Sultan gimmick.
- Does Not Like Shoes: As a Headshrinker.
- This became a plot point in his "Makin' a difference" Fatu gimmick, where he had difficulty climbing the ropes because he wasn't used to wearing boots.
- Dork Age: "Makin' a difference" Fatu and heel Rikishi are considered the worst portions of his career.

- Unfortunate Implications: After Fatu's face turn, the announcers pointed out that he was from American Samoa, so he was okay.
- The Voiceless: As the Sultan, makes sense because he had no tongue.
- Wild Samoan: As a member of the Headshrinkers.
- Wrestling Family: Part of the massive Samoan family with Jimmy and Jey Uso as his sons.
Shawn Michaels (Michael Shawn Hickenbottom) 1988-2010
- The Ace
- Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Surprisingly, it gets worse as he gets older. He was focused - if juvenily-focused - when he was younger. In the 2006 revival of DX, he was lucky if he could go an entire promo or 3-minute segment without either getting distracted or running around like a three-year-old.
- Biseinen
- Blood Brothers: The entire Kliq, but especially Triple H.
- Book Ends: Ladies and gentlemen, the Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels, has left the building.
- Beware the Nice Ones: As a face. Especially after his return in 2002.
- Breakup Breakout: Famously, from The Rockers, which makes Marty Jannetty his Garfunkel.
- To stress how important the Rockers' breakup was, not only has his superkick to Marty Janetty become an iconic image, Marty Janetty himself has become synonymous with the less-talented person of a broken-up partnership.
- In fact, this is such a huge example, the originally planned name for Breakup Breakout was "The Janetty".
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: One of the most infamous examples in wrestling history, he's one of the four wrestlers who publicly said buh-bye to Kayfabe with the Curtain Call.
- Canadian Wrestling Fans Hate Shawn Michaels: So, so much after the Montreal Screwjob. But around 2006, things started to look better.
- Shawn even lampshaded it in an off-the-air promo the night he was finally cheered in Montreal (as a part of uber-face tag team DX): "And because, for one night, Montreal forgave me . . ."
- Casanova
- Chivalrous Pervert
- Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: Lampshaded many, many times during his feuds with Triple H, going back to his superkick of Marty Janetty, to Diesel, to Stone Cold Steve Austin, to John Cena, etc.
- Cool Old Guy
- Creepy Cool Crosses: His merchandise starting from his 2002 return.
- Crowning Moment of Awesome: It would be shorter to list wrestling-related CMOA's that Shawn Michaels isn't a part of, especially at Wrestlemania.
- Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Him and Bret Hart burying the hatchet over the Montreal Screwjob after twelve years and embracing.
- Crucified Hero Shot: During his entrance since returning in 2002.
- Delinquents: DX loves this trope. Also had elements of it in Real Life, since the DX concept was based off Michaels' and Triple H's behind the scenes friendship and juvenile sense of humor.
- Do-It-Yourself Theme Tune
- Draco in Leather Pants
- Evil Foreigner: To the Canadians.
- Finishing Move: Flying Fist Drop; Teardrop Suplex; Sweet Chin Music (Savate Kick)
- Gimmick Matches: He participated in many firsts, most notably the first Ladder Match (with Razor Ramon at Wrestlemania 10) and the first Hell in a Cell (with The Undertaker at In Your House '97).
- The first ladder match in the WWF was between Michaels and Bret Hart on a Saturday Night's Main Event.
- Handsome Lech
- Heroic BSOD: After Triple H's second quad tear at New Year's Revolution '07, Shawn is getting beat down by Rated-RKO (Randy Orton and Edge), who are trash-talking DX while they do it. Shawn rolls out the ring, picks up Hunter's sledgehammer and stares at it for a good minute or two. Cue the Roaring Rampage of Revenge.
- He's also had a series of them in 2010, from losing the Royal Rumble onwards.
- Heterosexual Life Partners: Not that we don't wonder about the "heterosexual" tag, but Triple H and Shawn Michaels are, in the words of Jim Ross, "closer than a lot of brothers" in Real Life as well as in-character.
- In his book, Shawn calls Hunter "one of the best men I've ever known" and admits he wouldn't have survived 1996-2000 without Hunter.
- Holy Shit Quotient
- Hot Dad
- Ho Yay: Triple H (including the time Shawn kissed him on live television), Chris Jericho, John Cena, Marty Janetty, even some Foe Yay with Bret Hart.
- Iconic Wrestler (One of his Red Barons in fact.)
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Doesn't outright break it as much as Triple H, but he has his moments.
- "Man, there's something familiar about that kid, but I can't quite put my finger on it!" (Taps Triple H's shoulder)
- Loveable Rogue
- Loveable Sex Maniac
- Magnificent Bastard: "Who's your Daddy, Montreal?"
- Military Brat
- Never Live It Down: Go ahead, ask a Canadian their opinion on Shawn Michaels. We'll wait until the "YOU SCREWED BRET" chants die down.
- Nice Hat: Shawn wears a cowboy as part of his entrance attire nowadays.
- Perma-Stubble (Late in his career.)
- Red Baron: Heart Break Kid, HBK, The Showstopper, The Main Event, The Icon, Mr. Wrestlemania
- Spotlight-Stealing Squad: The Kliq and DX kind of live for this trope.

- Not to mention "I'm sorry. I love you."
- Ted Baxter
- The Fundamentalist: In real life, from 2001-present. Tones it down for his career, though there have been many, many mentions of his religion by Triple H.
- True Companions: The Kliq. Mess with one, and the rest will make your life a living hell.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Doesn't pick on Hunter as much as Hunter picks on him, but he has his moments of mockery and asskicking.
- Wacky Fratboy Hijinx: Two words: D Generation X.

- Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Sycho Sid, Sid Vicious, Sid Justice is even an intimidating name.
- Red Baron: Sycho.
- That's Gotta Hurt: His downright nasty injury while working with WCW. Has to be seen to be believed.

- Fan Nickname: Bobcore Holly
- Groin Attack: As Hardcore Holly.
- Hair of Gold
- Hoist by His Own Petard: Holly has a reputation for working stiff in matches and sandbagging his opponents, this worked out until he decided to sandbag Brock Lesnar during a powerbomb, the result? Holly gets a broken neck.
- Jerkass: Both Face and Heel.
- Red Baron: "Sparky", "Hardcore" and "Bombastic" Bob as part of the new Midnight Express.
- Tag Team: With Cody Rhodes.
- Too Dumb to Live: He made the wise decision to sandbag[1] Brock Lesnar, who where going to give him a powerbomb. This resulted in a broken neck for Holly, as Brock dropped him on his head, and was sideline for over a year.
- True Neutral: As Hardcore Holly.
- Wrestling Doesn't Pay: A wrestling race car driver (As Sparky Plugg)
The Undertaker (Mark William Callaway) 1990-
- The Ace
- A God Am I: During his Ministry days.

- Catch Phrase: "Rest In Peace".
- Cain and Abel: With Kane.

- Dark Messiah: During the Ministry/Corporate Ministry/Higher Power days.
- Dark Is Not Evil: No matter if he's a face or a heel.
- Darker and Edgier: Compared to the rest of the super colorful characters of WWE at the time, Taker was for all intents and purposes darkness incarnate.
- Dead Man Walking: Literally. Also one of his catchphrases
- Death Is Cheap: Seriously.
- Defeating the Undefeatable: Averted hard, with his unprecedented 19-0 winning streak at Wrestlemania. Every year, someone swears they're going to end the streak. Every year, the Undertaker stays undefeated.

- Draco in Leather Pants: Why WWE decided to turn him face back in 1991.
- The Dragon: Became this after the formation of the Corporate Ministry.
- Dye Hard: Naturally a redhead.
- Ensemble Darkhorse: One of the biggest examples in Professional Wrestling. He was a cool, talented, and vicious character who got over BIG time very quickly. Despite this, he's never really been considered the one of the faces of the company, due to the difficulty in marketing him. Despite this, he is probably the one wrestler most closely tied to Wrestlemania, and his matches are now considered events even of themselves.
- Epic Flail: His Biker chain during his Big Evil persona.
- Everything's Deader with Zombies
- Evil Overlord: During the Ministry days.
- Fingerless Gloves
- For Doom the Bell Tolls
- Genius Bruiser
- Gimmick Matches: He innovated plenty of these, but he's best known for the Hell in a Cell, Casket, and Buried Alive matches.
- The Grim Reaper: All gimmicks except his Big Evil persona.
- He's Just Hiding
- Holy Shit Quotient: Just try and keep your jaw off the floor when Taker does his over the top rope suicide plancha. The man can fly.
- Hot Dad
- Iconic Wrestler
- Lightning Bruiser
- Names to Run Away From Really Fast
- Nice Hat: A bowler in during his early years, and a wide-brimmed hat after his 2004 "revival."
- No One Could Survive That
- Won't Work On Me: What he does after the Punch-Punch-Punch Uh-Oh before the Oh Crap.
- Obviously Evil: Subverted. Played straight in his Ministry/Corporate Ministry/Higher Power days.

- Romance on the Set: Had been seeing Michelle McCool for several years, before finally getting married.
- Shock and Awe: All gimmicks except his Big Evil persona.

- Fat Bastard: As a heel.
- Finishing Move: Again, The Banzai Drop.
- Genius Bruiser
- The Giant (In the girth department)
- It Runs in The Family
- Meaningful Name: Yokozuna is the highest title in sumo wrestling.
