Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Abridged Series/Characters

Compare/contrast the Character Sheet for the source anime.

Main Characters

Yugi Muto

Ah, yes. Our protagonist, ladies and gentlemen. In the Abridged Series, Yugi shares the most amount of ever-so coveted screen time with Yami. His story plays out pretty much the same as it normally does, except with more card games and snarkiness.

  • Adorkable: At least two people have mistaken him for a baby panda. Including the spirit that possesses him regularly.
  • Anime Hair: Which is crazy enough for two people.
  • Anti-Hero: Varies between Type I and Type III. He's quite often a jerk, even to his friends, and can be very bitter and cynical at times, but he does show he's a good guy mostly.
  • Catch Phrase: "Super Special Awesome" and "Let Me Get This Straight......"
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Genre Savvy
  • The Hero: Although he believes the Pharaoh to be the hero.
  • Hipster: "I'm Yugi Moto, and I was playing card games before it was cool."
  • It's All About Me: Acknowledges his role as main character, but sometimes lets it get out of hand; i.e, not allowing anyone more screen time than him.
    • He then questions this when he starts to believe that the Pharaoh is the hero. Although they both really don't want anyone cutting in on their screen time.
  • Kid with the Leash: Currently the page quote (for a very good reason).

Yami Yugi: Couldn't I just mind-crush him?

Yugi: You can't fix all your problems by mind-crushing people!

Yami Yugi: Oh, come on! Just one little mind-crush, it'll barely hurt him.

Yugi: No! Bad pharaoh! No mind-crush!

This is so meta.

Yami Victor Yugi, aka "The Pharaoh" aka "Dan Green"

The incredibly FABULOUS alter-ego of our protagonist. In the Abridged Series, Yami is not as heroic as he used to be, but at the same time he's just as hammy, if not more so. Yami is a bastard, to put it simply, but his antics are just so damn hilarious that we can't help but love him for it. Has a penchant for Mind Crushing gay clowns and in the old days used to summon monsters out of thin air to brutally murder anyone he deemed as a threat. In the past, he also wasn't a benevolent pharaoh, as evidenced by his tradition of Slavemas. All in all, a difficult man to figure out.

  • Ambiguously Gay: Bakura's gaydar has reacted to him, he believes that the Millennium Puzzle is just fabulous, has an obsession with leather pants and claimed that he was straight if Kaiba's ghost was real. Turns out the "ghost" was actually a gay clown.
    • Alternatively, Bi the Way, because of Téa. However, in "They Saved Tristan's Brain," it's revealed that he isn't sure if she's a girl.
      • And then there's Bonds Beyond Time Abridged.
  • Am I Right?: "Hey, Joey. Watapon! Am I right?" - About one of the cards in Kaiba's lame-ass deck when he takes over the duel with Noah.
  • Anti-Hero: Type V -> Type IV. He cares nothing for anyone, loves to Mind Crush people, when Yugi's friends are in danger his reactions range from indifference to joy, and in Season 0 he's completely Ax Crazy.
  • Ax Crazy
  • The Caligula: His rule as Pharaoh Atem; "Slavemas" is the only word you need.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Depraved Bisexual: Comes off as this, at least in the "What would Yugi do?" video.
  • Genre Savvy
  • Hell-Bent for Leather
  • The Hero: Yugi's perception. Actually more like The Lancer.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: On Christmas, he sent Marik and his evil Council of Doom a present. A bomb.
    • His season zero counterpart is a full blown psycho who just seems to like killing the people who hurt Yugi, making him heroic in the loosest possible definition.

Yami: Hey Kaiba, your body guards stole my Grampa's card so I stole their kidneys. Seemed like a fair trade to me.

Yami: I have had many names. Once I was known as 'Pharaoh'. Then I was 'The Artist Formerly Known as Pharaoh'. But you can call me 'Yami'.

Yugi: I thought your name was Ate-

Yami: Shh! Don't spoil it, now!

Steve "Joey" Wheeler

The Lancer. Joey serves the same role as he does originally. Has a habit of subconsciously saying "Nyeh!" at times and is a closet furry. Might also have an attraction to Kaiba, but then again, who doesn't? On the other hand, he's recently admitted his love for Mai Valentine's breasts. His name was also legally changed to Steve so Marik could take over his mind for a short time, but he is still referred to by his original name.

It was recently revealed that he was indirectly responsible for Noah's death. During the incident that caused Joey and Serenity to be separated (said incident being teaching her how to drive while underage), she forgot to apply the handbrake, and ended up running over Noah.

Steve "Téa" Gardner

In the Abridged Series, Téa is incredibly fixated on friendship. She honestly believes that friendship is the ultimate source of power and can right any wrong, God bless her. If you say otherwise, however... Be afraid. Be very afraid. She can and will make speeches about friendship when provoked, and if she focuses on a single target, well...the less said, the better. Her name was also legally changed to Steve so Marik could take over his mind for a short time, but she is still referred to by her original name.

Yugi: Thanks for standing up for me, Téa.
Téa: That's okay, Yugi. You know I think you're really cute.
Yugi: Hey, you wanna go out some time?
Téa: I meant as a friend, Yugi.
Yugi: ...Oh, um, okay... sorry.
Téa: But I do love you.
Yugi: Really?!
Téa: As a friend, Yugi!
Yugi: Oh... Alright.
Téa: Let's have sex later, okay?
Yugi: ...Huh?
Téa: AS FRIENDS, Yugi! Geez, such a pervert.

Joey: Man, I had the most unbelievable dream. There were two Yugis, and Bakura was a main character!
Téa: I usually enjoy dreams that involve two Yugis, but that one was very disappointing.

Tristan Timothy Taylor

Tristan is...dumb. Really dumb. For real. That is pretty much all there is to be said about him. However, when he isn't stuck in his own bizarre little world, he can be surprisingly badass: his voice gives him super strength, after all. His physical body has recently been destroyed/possessed, and he is now living as a robotic monkey. His friends think that he has died.

"Holy bleep on a bleep sandwich!"

    • "My voice gives me super strength", he also mentions his voice knowing kung-fu.
    • "Burn the Witch!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Big time.

"Zack and Cody are my imaginary friends!"

Tristan[with original voice returned]: Hey, what gives? I liked my new voice! People were starting to take me seriously!
Yami: Sorry, Tristan, but it's much easier to make fun of you this way.

Seto Kaiba

Current president of Kaiba Corporation. Seto's story roughly remains the same from the original show, with some minor exceptions. A little known fact is that he once experimented with several drugs which made him believe at one point that his hair was green. Never misses the opportunity to be as Badass as possible and screw the rules with whatever is necessary. (Namely with his money since he's obscenely rich).

He's also a robot created by Frieza during the times of Ancient Egypt to rule in his stead (making Frieza Kaiba's real father), but due to boredom with the desert environment Frieza just left the planet. How Kaiba was activated and by whom is still unknown. Then again, considering whom he got this information from...
As it turns out, the whole bit about Frieza was a lie. The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future is his real father. Probably.

Was sued by Industrial Illusions for "shady business deals", but after he assured everyone that he was winning, he actually did.

Kaiba: Looks like the Rules ... (puts on sunglasses) ... Just got Screwed.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He takes over Domino City to host a card game and when someone says that his explaining of the tournament rules is boring he tells them to "Get the hell out of my city!"
  • Creepy Child: Yu-Gi-Oh!: Season 0 episode two portrays him as this, to the point that the theme song for Mister Roger's Neighborhood' can sound unsettling.

Kaiba (creepy monotone): I'm Seto Kaiba! The nicest guy on the face of the planet!

  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Flat Earth Atheist: Parodied to a great extent. Even calling himself "the most skeptical person on this show".
  • It's All About Me: Granted, he knows the show isn't all about him, but he still thinks it should be. In fact, he makes The Movie come to a grinding halt just to point out that he's a better character than Yugi/Yami.

Robot: It's all about you, isn't it, Kaiba.
Seto: Well, yeah.

  • Jerkass
  • Made of Iron: Emerges from the flaming wreckage of a motorcycle crash completely unharmed.

"It's a good thing I'm Seto Kaiba, or that might've actually hurt me."

Supporting Characters

Mokuba Kaiba

Seto's little brother. Tends to get kidnapped a lot. Often told to shut up.

Like Seto, his true father is a Dragon Ball character. Unlike Seto, he's not a robot, and is actually the son of Nappa. Ghost Nappa, to be precise. Probably, but likely not.

Duke Devlin

Resident ladies' man. Duke was initially unaware of the fact that he has his own theme music, which plays constantly as he speaks. It's implied he could go both ways.

Solomon "Grandpa" Muto

Yugi's grandfather. A simple shopkeeper and stereotypical, senile grandpa with a death wish and some incredibly quirky... habits. Best not to pry into it: you will come back mentally scarred.

"You kids these days and your Millennium Items, and your card games, and your loud music and your hula hoops and your hopscotch and your dungarees and your lollipops and your Sony Playstations and your voice-activated light switches and your leather pants and your artificial insemination-- (cut off by Yugi, then continues after the credits roll) --your Blu-Ray Discs and your pierced scrotums..."

"Where am I? What day is it? I like pudding!"

"I'm checking the obituaries to see if I've died yet!"

"You know, in my day, we didn't have Duel-Domes. We had to play our card games out on the street, and our cards weren't even real cards. They were just rocks we picked up off the ground, and then we threw them at each other. Come to think of it, it wasn't really card games at all. We just liked to throw rocks at each other. Mostly at me. That's probably why I have so much self-loathing. Anyway, we should probably go over there."

Mai Valentine and Her Breasts

Ishizu Ishtar

Serenity Wheeler

"What purpose does my character even serve at this point?"

Major Villains

Maximillion Pegasus

CEO and founder of Industrial Illusions and creator of the children's card game Duel Monsters. When his wife-to-be inexplicably exploded at the altar, he went to Egypt and received the Millennium Eye from Shadi. He hides his sorrows and true intentions behind a gay facade. And we mean that literally. He used the first tournament to gather souls to bring back Cecelia, but lost to Yugi. After releasing the people he turned into trading cards he was killed by Yami Bakura...temporarily. Surgery has made broad advances, and Pegasus is back and more fabulous than ever before.

Pegasus: Excellent. Soon, my evil plan to steal an object from a small child will be complete!.
Yami: You mean you arranged this whole tournament just to steal my Millennium Puzzle?
Pegasus: Exactly.
Yami: Did you even consider just asking me for it? I mean, do you have any idea how much time and money you've wasted with this whole facade? PEOPLE HAVE DIED BECAUSE YOU WANTED A NECKLACE! I KILLED A GAY CLOWN, FOR RA'S SAKE!

Pegasus: Look, are you going to play a children's card game with me or not?

Yami: I suppose I might as well.

"That's the wrong eyeball, you fool!"

"Well, hello little girl, would you like to see my Funny Bunny?"

  • Necromantic: Like in the original his goal is to bring his dead wife back to life.
    • This gets taken to its logical extreme in Evil Council 4. With the help of Rebecca's satanic teddy bear, Cecelia is brought back to life...as a zombie.
  • Put on a Bus: For the main series as he doesn't appear again until season 4; he's made appearances in specials though.
  • Sissy Villain: Hoo boy. And you thought the original was eccentric enough.

Wohoohoohoo. If I weren't so very camp I'd probably make a credible villain.

Yami Bakura, aka Florence

The spirit within the Millennium Ring. Yami Bakura, whose name is actually Florence, is the definition of evil: sadistic, sarcastic, and British beyond belief. It is because of this, however, that he has a legion of fangirls at his beck and call. His ultimate goal is to take the Pharaoh's screentime. After attempting to do so in Duelist Kingdom and failing miserably, he took Pegasus' Millennium Eye and (seemingly) killed him. He then lay dormant until Marik's arrival, where he struck a deal to assist him in his cause, since they shared similar agendas.

After Melvin assumed direct control of Marik's body, he outed him as a spy for 4Kids and challenged him. He lost and died, but it is heavily implied that his fangirls have more power than expected...

"I will be a main character, even if it takes me another 200 bloody episodes!"

"Well, I suppose my parents never loved me enough. They were always dressing me like a girl. Did you know they wanted to call me Florence? Who names a boy Florence?! Idiots, that's who!"

"It's the only way to kill an overacting zombie!"

Marik Sebastian Ishtar III

Marik is the successor to the tomb keepers of the Pharaoh and the leader of the Rare Hunters. Like Yami Bakura, he also wants to take the Pharaoh's screentime, and so he sends his minions into the Battle City tournament to destroy Yugi a little (not kill, destroy). He possesses the Millennium Rod, which allows the user to brainwash anyone with "Steve" or any variation thereof in their name.

When he was young, Marik yearned for a life better than one spent underground, so he snuck out with Ishizu to the outside world. That one happy moment, however, didn't last. His abusive father Hank found out and assaulted his adoptive brother Odion into submission. On that day, his alternate personality Melvin surfaced, and killed his father in cold blood. When Shadi appeared, Marik made himself believe the Pharaoh was responsible. Currently he, or rather his personality, is sealed away.

Yami: Why wouldn't I hate women? I mean, they hate me. That Marik chick is always saying how much she despises me.
Joey: Guh, Yug, I don't know how to tell you this, but...Marik's a guy.
Yami: What!? That's crazy! But look at the way she dress!

Marik: I mean, you know that I'm only gay for you! I'm very comfortable with my gayness where you're concerned. But as far as anyone else goes, totally hetero!

    • In his own little Spinoff show, Marik Plays Bloodlines , Marik openly comes out of the closet, even if it's only in response to a rather terrifying Mel Gibson. See it here, forward to around 12 minutes.

Marik: I admit it! I'm gay, I'm gay! I like men, and I like men's bottoms, and I have a whole folder on my computer filled with Theif Shipping pictures!

"OH, I get it! He was implying that you wanted me to sleep with you! That is pretty funny. After all, I'm way out of your league."

  • Laughably Evil
  • Misapplied Phlebotinum: For having an all powerful ancient Egyptian artifact that can control minds and warp the fabric of reality, he really doesn't do much with it.
    • To be fair, the mind control only works on people named Steve. Which he cleverly works around with Joey and Téa by forcing them to legally change their names.
    • "Marik, have you been using your Millenium Item as a bong again?"
  • Morality Pet: A bird he named Mr. Tweetums.
  • Poke the Poodle: Most of his "eeeeee-vil plans" end up as this.

"We are going to sneak into Yugi's house in a cover of darkness, and rearrange his sock drawer! His entire collection of socks shall be thrown into disarray! His world will be plunged into chaos! Sock related chaos!

"This isn't like my scriptures at all! I mean what is that guy doing to that other guy? I don't know what it is but it gives me cravings..."

Yami Marik, aka Melvin

The current antagonist (not anymore...yet), and Marik's alter-ego. When Odion was struck by Ra's divine wrath, the mental seals on Melvin weakened, and he resurfaced. Unlike Marik, Melvin has absolutely no compunctions about committing more... grotesque atrocities. But can you blame him? All he really wants is a hug. By "hug" we mean he wants to stab you with a chainsaw.

He is revealed to be a spy for 4Kids, sent to get the show cancelled. Bakura duels him to try and save the show, but is defeated. Melvin thus destroys the "fourth wall" and the show is destroyed.

Melvin: I've been OMNOMNOM-ing on his soul for ten years and I happen to like the taste!

Yugi: Ask yourself: what would killing me accomplish?
Melvin: Other than making me laugh like a maniac, not much. But it's enough.

Hear that, Florence? That's the sound of the Fourth Wall...collapsing.

  • Out of Focus: The Cancelled Series. The only screentime he's had involves him getting bored, wandering about the blimp, trying to hug Kaiba's bodyguards, and now he's trying to unlock a bitchy door. He gets past the first lock, and now must unlock the second one.
  • Psycho for Hire: Once we find out he's working for someone.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: Even more so than Marik.

"I am henceforth known as the ruler of all doors! Every single door shall bow before me and open at my command! I am the Master of Unlocking!"

Noah Kaiba

The biological son of Seto's and Mokuba's adoptive father Gozaburo, CEO of 4Kids, and current antagonist. In league with the Big Five to attempt to take down the show for good. Certifiable nutjob who wants revenge against Kaiba for stealing his life. Noah lived (somewhat) happily with Gozaburo until he was killed in a car accident. What remained of his mind was uploaded to the internet.

Unbeknownst to him, Joey and Serenity are indirectly responsible for his death. Serenity, as it turns out, was the one who ran him over while learning how to drive.

Gozaburo Kaiba

Former CEO of Kaiba Corporation. Considers anyone beneath him a "small person" and will occasionally poke fun at their misfortune. Do not enrage him if you value your ears. Was fired by Seto and Mokuba and committed suicide in disgrace.

Not really. Just like in the source material he faked his death and actually inserted himself into the Virtual World in order to manipulate KaibaCorp from behind the scenes.

"Horses can't be knights, that's just silly."

Dartz

Zorc Necrophades

A dark god and famous TV celebrity. Was at first the star of Zorc & Pals until its unfortunate cancellation. However, Zorc bounced back by performing in The Suite Life of Zorc & Cody. Loves destruction, especially of the worldly kind.

Anubis

Some random villain with generic motives no one gives a shit about.

Yami: You certainly took your sweet time didn't you? I mean, come on, the movie's almost over. Who do you think you are? Venom?

Paradox

Basically the same as Anubis, but IN 3D!!

  • Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: "Humanity's ignorance has caused the planet to become wavaged and wifeless."

Lesser Villains

The Steves

Marik's henchmen (also known as Ghouls or Rare Hunters in the actual series). Steve (the Exodia guy), Steve Arcana, Steve the Mime, Steve Luna, and Steve Umbris. He also controlled Bandit Keith (whose middle name is Steve) and Joey and Téa (he tricked them into legally changing their names to Steve).

Odion

Hank Ishtar

  • Abusive Parent
  • Aerith and Bob: Marik, Odion, and Ishizu, the children of Hank and Veronica Ishtar.
  • Asshole Victim
  • Catch Phrase: "Binky boy!"
    • Apparently it runs in the family.
  • Funetik Aksent/What the Hell Is That Accent?: Sounds somewhat Italian-ish and... we don't know.
    • "It was a long taym agoe, een a galuxy FAR, FAR HAWAII..."
    • I believe it's Egyptian-Scottish-Italian-British-American-Czechoslovakian-Plutonian...uh...Ishtarian.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
    • "The finest human being in the world", my ass.
    • During "An Ishtar Family Christmas", he claims to hate men with beards because they intimidate him...even though he is a man with a beard.
  • Jerkass: Of the highest caliber.
  • Refuge in Audacity: EVERYTHING he does!
  • Ted Baxter
  • Whip It Good: "I'm going to fix this like I fix every other problem in my life: by h-whipping everybody within a five-hundred-yard radius!"

The Big Five / Team 4Kids

A group of former Kaiba Corporation executives who were fooled by Seto into assisting him in taking over Gozaburo's position, only to get screwed by his newfound money. They begrudgingly served him until Pegasus attempted making a deal with them that would give them back their prominent positions. They failed. Afterward, they tried to trap Kaiba in cyberspace. They failed. To add insult to injury, they ended up trapped in their own little world until Noah stumbled upon them and offered them new positions at 4Kids. They eagerly accepted and now an opportunity has arisen in which they will have their Roaring Rampage of Revenge.

It's called localization, Mr. Kaiba. Because I do declare, there is only one country that matters when it comes to translatin' stuff. And that's Americanlanyvania...I mean America.

Dartz' Motorcycle-Riding Henchmen

"Mayan, I liked you bettah when you said "zoog zoog". Ya weren't such a little bitch!"

Minor Characters

Ryo Bakura

The present-time Bakura. Quite effeminate, and very, very British, he tends to get pushed in the background a lot by his evil side, who possesses the Millennium Ring.

Tristan: Nobody cares about you want!
Bakura:...My mummy does...

  • Shipper on Deck: Debatable, but interestingly enough, every time he has shown up in the creator's spinoff fanfics he's been subtly helping Yami Bakura and Marik together. This despite the fact that he's Out of Focus most of time because of his dark side. Why he bothers, no one really knows.

Weevil Underwood and Rex Raptor

Rex: You said 'region'!

Mako Tsunami

  • Amusing Injuries: Attempted on Yugi, successfully employed against Grandpa.
  • Berserk Button: Being called a Freaky Fish Guy. He eventually comes to accept it, however.

"You're not just a Freaky Fish Guy, you're the Freaky Fish Guy!"

"Bandit" Keith Steve Howard

Hair Guy (Kemo)

A security guard for Pegasus and (formerly) Kaiba. Has an unspecified acquaintance (possibly his brother) known as the Mullet Guy.

  • Catch Phrase: "Attention Duelists!", "My hair is..." usually follows or they're separate.
  • Cool Shades
  • Improbable Hairstyle: It's apparently the source of his power (to defy gravity), but definitely the source of both the jokes used for him and his popularity.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He claims that his hair is Tristan's father.

Shadi

Yugi: I suppose it could be worse. You could be acting like Bruno.

  • How Do You Say...?
  • Jerkass: "I am, how you say, kind of a dick."
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: "Man will become like the animal, animal will become like the dirt, and dirt will become like the Jew."
  • Spirit Advisor: Subverted, as he only shows up if absolutely necessary, mostly to screw with people or tell them information that they already know.

The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future

Jaden Yuki

The hyperactive protagonist from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, who thinks he's black and is highly disliked by other characters. Voiced by ShadyVox of Yu-Gi-Oh GX the Abridged Series.

"And I'm Jaden Yuki, the cute, hyperactive one that people want to choke in his sleep!"

Yami: Way to go, Jaden.

Yubel

One of Jaden's two "imaginary friends", aka "the demon living in my head"(actually a living spirit residing in the actual card).

Lyman Banner

A side character from Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.

Yusei Fudo

The protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's. He's one of the saner characters in the series, despite the fact that he dates his bike, and has an incredibly nice voice.

  • Anime Hair
  • Audio Erotica: Deliberately played up it seems. Lampshaded in the movie when he introduces himself to Yugi.

"I'm the serious one with a voice that makes the fangirls swoon".

  • Berserk Button: Do not call his bike smelly.
  • Catch Phrase:
    • "I came...to [location]." It'll always get subverted by the end of the video, leading to gems like this:

Yusei: "Paradox... I came."
Paradox: "What?!"
Yusei: "To the past."
Paradox: "Oh."
Yusei: "But I also had an orgasm!"

Jack Atlas

Another main character from 5Ds. Likes CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES and has No Indoor Voice.

  • Catch Phrase: CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES!
    • Later "re-branded" to "DUEL MONSTERS ON D-WHEELS!"
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Thinks Paradox is Waldo of Where's Waldo when Yusei spots him in an old picture.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Calls Paradox a dick for stealing Yusei's Stardust Dragon card, before admitting "I know I did it in season one, but uh... He's a dick!"
  • Large Ham
  • No Indoor Voice: So much so that Jack shouting into a microphone caused a giant explosion.

Yusei: The strange part is that the microphone wasn't even plugged in.

Yuma Tsukumo

Protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh ZEXAL.

Jack Slenderman, aka "The Slender Man"

The Slender Man. Know him. Fear him. Give him $20 or he'll ruin your movie. And possibly eat some kids along the way. Was formerly Bakura's college roommate, and has made several guest appearances in the spinoff videos, though he hasn't appeared in the actual material. Yet.

Appeared as the Third Angel in LittleKuriboh's Card Games For Charity NGE One-Shot.
