Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Abridged Series/YMMV
- Awesome Ego: Seto Kaiba.
I am on a drug: its called SETO FREAKING KAIBA!!!
- Broken Base: Some people insist that the First Installment Wins. Most of this is because They Changed It, Now It Sucks, as the first season's jokes were more original did not rely on Internet memes to be interesting. Some fans were also more than displeased that Little Kuriboh now had guest voice actors as regulars when everything was a solo effort before. Lampshaded by the trolls in one of The Stingers in season 3.
- Canon Defilement: Invoked with Season Zero Abrigded #2
- Complete Monster: Melvin
- Crosses the Line Twice:
- The redub of the first episode to promote a podcast that Little Kuriboh takes part in, where a large portion of the nouns are replaced with the word "vagina".
Kaiba: It's because this vagina makes no sense, nobody could figure out how to do it!
- Duke Devlin manages to cross the line three times.
"I summon the extremely phallic spaceship, but since it belongs to me, it grows to twice its usual size. Duke Devlin always rises to the occasion, baby!"
- Crowning Music of Awesome:
- Without Yugi, I'm on a Blimp, Brooklyn Rage~, Requiem of a Nyeh, and Marik and Bakura's Duet of Stand by Me.
- Introducing the Paradox Brothers to "YMCA" was also inspired.
- His recent video includes a rap battle between Jaden Yuki, Yami and Yugi Moto...
- LEATHER PANTS~!
- A cover of 'Out There' from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, done by Marik. Who seems to do a lot of these songs.
- The recent Evil Council meeting has given us Zorc and Cody's version of the Disney song "A Whole New World" with backing vocals from Teddy. Aptly named "Destroy The World".
- We're sitting here today with duelist Jaden Yuki...
- Jaden's Stronger Rap. The only reason people bothered to watch the credits of the BBT movie
- The rocking song at the end of BBT with Yami, Jaden and Yusei
- Villain, just villain.
- Ear Worm:
- "Who's that crazy kook destroying the world? It's Zorc! (That's me!) It's Zorc & Pals! The blood of the innocent will flow without end! His name is Zorc, and he's destroying the world!"
- Take the already insanely catchy Lady Gaga song "Poker Face," mix it with one of the best catchphrases in the show, and what do you get? "Bru bru bru Brooklyn rage, bru bru Brooklyn rage..."
- The same with the Requiem for a Dream jingle spoof: "Nyeh... nyeh-nyeh-nyeh-nyeh, nyeh-nyeh-nyeh-nyeh, nyeh-nyeh-nyeh-nyeh-nyeh-nyeh..."
- Let's not forget "Leather Pants" to the tune of "Bad Romance"
- "Two Dark Magician Girls go 'round the outside, round the outside."
- The Climactic Music in the BBT Abridged movie counts as well. It's Tenacious D and Yu-Gi-Oh fused together, and by the end reaches Badass Creed levels. We're Yugioh, we're Yugioh, we're Yugioh, we're Yugioh...!
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Quite a few:
- Hair Guy Kemo, Bandit Keith and Jack Atlas, all mainly because of their memetic catchphrases.
- The Slender Man.
- Jaden and Yusei were popular enough to become Breakout Characters
- Evil Is Sexy: Florence and Marik
- First Installment Wins: While the series is certainly known beyond the first episode, the first episode has been reffered to and remade the most, even by Little Kuriboh himself.
- Funny Aneurysm Moment:
- It's hard not to cringe when Serenity asks Tristan what sort of lonely deranged freak proposes on the Internet, and Tristan's response, now that LK and Safty are splitting up.
- The joke in episode 40 where Ghost Nappa expresses his desire to capture Mokuba with a Master Ball becomes even creepier given the recent revelation that Ghost Nappa is Mokuba's real father.
- This will hopefully not happen for a very long time, but once either Little Kuriboh or Sam Riegel dies, episode 8's epilogue will become a lot less funny.
- Joey claiming his parents split up after he tried to teach Serenity how to drive becomes a lot less funny when you find out that it was Serenity's driving that is responsible for Noa's death via hit 'n' run
- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: It's big enough in Japan to have an unofficial Japanese site
- As of August 2009, however, all the Japanese-captioned episodes have been deleted except for those since episode 42 (Yes, that 42).
- LK's YouTube channel is the #1 most subscribed in Japan. You do NOT want to know how he celebrated. (Schmuck Bait here.)
- But that's because he's listing his country as being Japan, which means that all the subscriber numbers automatically get added to it and not to his real home country.
- And if you think about it this way, the series is made in England, and more than half the fanbase is IN AMERICA!, because the largest (by far) potential audience of any English-language production is IN AMERICA! - unless it has jokes that specifically pertain to a certain country/culture (e.g. Britain, Australia, whatever).
- 4Kids are big fans of YGOTAS. It should be noted that they are not the ones who took the episodes down. That would be one of YouTube's copyright bots acting on its superficial programming.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- Tristan talks about Card games on motorbikes. Later, it's announced that Tristan's second VA (from episode 10+ ) would also voice Yusei.
- "Stop trying to make 'BROOKLYN RAGE~!' into a Catch Phrase. It's never going to work!" When you consider even Wayne Grayson loves using it in Joey's dub voice...
- Téa once says "Oh, it is on in a manner similar to that of Donkey Kong!" About a month later, Nintendo copyrights the phrase "on like Donkey Kong", making Téa's line sound like she's trying to dodge a copyright.
- The Cardgamesftw account was taken down due to claims of Copyright Infringement. In the episode posted just beforehand (50):
Johnson: Your series is in violation of copyright law, it is my job to see that you are rightfully punished.
Joey: Hold on a second, you're that guy who's been taking out all the abridged series on Youtube! You're that guy who got us banned twice!
Johnson: That's right, Joseph. And you know what they say: third time's the charm.
- Also, in episode 10, Joey mentions a spinoff series called "Yu-Gi-Oh DMX", about a bunch of rap artists playing card games. Now watch this video.
- Also, has Jaden made a single appearance in this series without rapping?
- In episode 11, Tristan becomes convinced that Kaiba is Santa, and is dismayed when he doesn't get a chance to tell him what he wants for Christmas. The credits (with the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" playing over them) reveal that Tristan wants a pony when the lyrics play "Make it last forever, friendship never ends".
- In the Leather Pants parody-of-a-parody Literal Pants, Marik repeatedly takes jabs at Kirbopher's artistic skills when it came to animating the video. This becomes funny when you consider Kirbopher and LittleKuriboih's voice acting roles in the upcoming animation project Monster Boy, where they play a frustrated artist and a creature that exists solely to critisize him, respectively.
- Season 3 implies that Noah (aka the head of 4Kids) was entirely unaware that the company lost the rights to Pokémon and One Piece, and now the Big Five are trying to defeat Yugi and his friends to get rid of them having cancelled their show. In the aftermath of 4Kids being sued and the possibility of losing their license to Yu-Gi-Oh! due to violation of their contract with Tokyo TV, this is absolutely hysterical.
- In the 2nd Anniversary Video, Dan Green only invited Vic Mignogna and Johnny Yong Bosch because he doesn't want girls to come to his party. He then follows by telling all the girls to go watch My Little Pony. A few years later... oh, you know where this is going!
- Also, in episode 10, Joey mentions a spinoff series called "Yu-Gi-Oh DMX", about a bunch of rap artists playing card games. Now watch this video.
- Ho Yay:
- Enough to deserve its own page
- Jumping the Shark: Those who believe the series has jumped the shark generally agree that it did so around the end of season 2.
- Magnificent Bastard: Florence.
- Memetic Mutation: Several.
- "Attention, duelists: My hair has become an internet phenomenon."
- "In America!"
- CARD GAMES ON MOTORCYCLES!
- "No homo right?" "ALL OF THE HOMO!"
- "RIIIIGHT, idon'tbelieveyou!"
- Brroklyn Rage!
- Misblamed: Many people blame 4Kids for Little Kuriboh's most recent suspension in December 2010. However, it was actually done by a company named Nihon Ad Systems, which is the company that does the Japanese episodes of Yugioh. Despite the fact 4Kids are portrayed as the Big Five in Season 3, they seem to like Yugioh Abridged.
- Nightmare Fuel:
- There's Yugi's dream in Episode 16, the 2001 parody. The creepy music coupled with the overall Satanic look of it nearly made a few people afraid to go to sleep for fear of dreaming about it.
- In the fourth "Evil Council" video, Pegasus, with a little help from the possessed teddy bear, resurrects his dead wife Cecilia the old-fashioned way. Needless to say, the appropriately edited image of Cecilia will come across as shocking to those unprepared.
- Noah is creepy. Not that he wasn't creepy in the original, but here...
- "Hush little Mokuba, don't say a word,
- Noah's going to keep you in the virtual world
- And if your brother tries to moan
- Noah's going turn his body into stone..." Brrr, creepy
- Melvin. Just... Melvin.
- Seto in Season Zero. He's actually nice and friendly... while still having a Creepy Monotone, making his kindness sort of creepy.
- Sein Language: Attention Tropers: Chesticles. That is all.
- Shocking Swerve: Melvin successfully cancels the show in episode 46.
- Spotlight-Stealing Squad: Yami Bakura/Florence and Marik seem to show up together a lot in all things related to Yu-Gi-Oh the Abridged Series and their banter together usually goes on for a while. This is especially clear in the "Come Sail Away" video, which was supposed to feature just Yami singing the song but it ended up being sung by a majority of the cast, with who else but Bakura and Marik getting the chorus part and even getting to talk during the inbetween music.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Tristan in season 2 for most of his jokes come to him wanting to have sex with Joey's sister.
- Tear Jerker:
- Mako's speech at the end of Harpoonshipping. While not really sad, it's beautiful in a way.
- The ocean forgiving him.
- The eulogy to Tristan's voice, despite being really weird, is rather sad, if it's looked at the right way.
- Marik and Florence's Final Hate Duet at the end of episode 46. What's worse is that, considering Florence didn't show up for about a hundred unabridged episodes after this, he probably won't return to the abridged series for a while either. He's essentially dead. At least there's always the evil council videos...
- Mako's speech at the end of Harpoonshipping. While not really sad, it's beautiful in a way.
- The Woobie:
- Bakura, when he's not being the Butt Monkey.
- Serenity, until she recovers her eyesight.
- Mokuba takes the cake for this: constantly being told to shut up and possibly molested by Noah. And he's a Butt Monkey too. Actually, being a The Woobie and the Butt Monkey is practically the same in this show.
- Woolseyism:
- The Swedish dub replaces some jokes that would not make sense in Swedish with jokes that do. Bakura's accent is now Scanian and Joey now makes references to Stureplan.
English!Pegasus: No! I can’t live without "Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series"! It’s so important to me!
English!Yami: Don’t worry, Pegasus. There’s always "Naruto: The Abridged Series". But as everyone knows, that’s just not quite as good!
Swedish!Pegasus: No! I can’t live without "Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series"! It’s so important to me!
Swedish!Yami: Don’t worry, Pegasus. There are many more abridged series. But as everyone knows, they don't exist in Swedish!
English!Mokuba: Let's go find the genie voiced by Robin Williams and occasionally by Dan Castellaneta.
- The Polish dub by FlyingIrzimekFTW is also full of these. For starters, Joey's Brooklyn accent is replaced with Bialystok accent (a Russian-influenced accent). Episode 8 replaces the Spanish opening with German (the episode being titled "Kartenspiele"). 4Kids is replaced in all instances by Polsat. The aforementioned joke in the Swedish dub paragraph goes like this:
Polish!Pegasus: No! I can’t live without "Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series PL Fandub"! It’s so important to me!
Polish!Yami: Don’t worry, Pegasus. There’s always a version with Polish subtitles. But as everyone knows, that’s just not quite as good!
