Warrior Cats/Characters/Thunder Clan
ThunderClan is the main Clan in Warrior Cats. As such, it has the most characters.
Main index can be found here.
The Original Series
Firestar
"Surely it is our struggle against hardship that makes us true warriors. You think fresh blood in the Clans will weaken us? A life without hardship will weaken us more."
The protagonist of the first six books, and a major character in all later books. Currently the Leader of ThunderClan. He was originally a kittypet, but was accepted into the Clan after feeling mysteriously drawn to the forest his whole life. His name comes from his fur, which is bright orange. He originally faced prejudice due to his non-Clan heritage, but has long since proven himself a brave and highly capable warrior. Currently, his leadership decisions (in particular, letting more non-Clan cats into ThunderClan, as well as interfering in other Clans' business) are a source of controversy among the Clans. In The Last Hope, he is revealed as the fourth, and dies fighting Tigerstar.

- The Leader
- Martial Pacifist
- Rescue Romance: With Sandstorm.
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right: His general relationship with the warrior code
- Secret Keeper: In the first series, he keeps several secrets - that Ravenpaw is alive, that Bluestar had kits with Oakheart, that Brokentail is Yellowfang's son, Graystripe's forbidden relationship.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: At one point, he mistook Tigerclaw and Brokenstar's evil plotting for Tigerclaw using The Power of Friendship on Brokenstar.
- Young and in Charge: Is made a deputy at a very young age (if his training had taken the normal six moons instead of two, he would have only been a warrior for two moons at that point) and becomes leader only six moons later.
Graystripe
Firestar's best friend, and former deputy of ThunderClan. Graystripe is a good-natured, easy-going cat who gets along well with everyone. Gets his own big source of drama when he falls in love with the RiverClan warrior Silverstream, and fathers two kits with her. He temporarily joins RiverClan in order to be with them, but his conflicting loyalties eventually lead to his rejoining ThunderClan.

- You Can't Go Home Again: He escapes the Twolegs and finds the forest again... only to realize that there is no forest left; it's been destroyed by Twolegs. He does find the Clan's new home eventually.
Sandstorm
Firestar's eventual mate, although she initially hated his guts. One of the best hunters in the Clan.
- Action Girl
- Deadpan Snarker
- Fiery Red Pelt: Though her pelt isn't as fiery as her mate's, her temperament is much more so.

Tigerclaw
The traitorous deputy of ThunderClan, and Firestar's nemesis. For more information, see Warrior Cats
Bluestar
The leader of ThunderClan during most of the first series, and Firestar's mentor. She is highly respected as a wise and powerful leader, even by cats of other Clans. She is tough but fair, and fierce in battle. Her only real problem is her unwavering trust in Tigerclaw, whose betrayal shocks her so deeply that she becomes paranoid and insane, and turns her back on StarClan. She gets better... just before her death. Currently residing in StarClan.
- Angsty Surviving Twin: After Snowfur's death
- Ambition Is Good: Why Sunstar chose to make her his deputy.
Sunstar: [You have ambition] only to serve your Clan. That is why I chose you. You have suffered much and lost much, and yet you still serve your Clanmates, putting their needs before yours, willing to sacrifice all for the sake of your Clan.
- Action Girl: As with pretty much all female characters.
- Almost-Dead Guy
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- Back from the Dead: Because she is leader. However, we only see Bluestar lose two of her lives besides her final one.
- Because Destiny Says So: She gets hit pretty hard by this: allow a bloodthirsty, needlessly violent cat to become leader and destroy your Clan... or abandon your newborn kits in order to become leader yourself and prevent that tragedy?
- Big Good
- Big No: In Bluestar's Prophecy, when her mom dies.
- Blue Eyes
- Dying as Yourself: After spending a good season or two with clouded judgement and extreme paranoia, she realizes the truth in the end and becomes her usual self right before her death.

Spottedleaf
ThunderClan's medicine cat when Firestar first joined, she was also his first love. She is killed in a ShadowClan raid before the relationship has much of a chance to go anywhere, but Spottedleaf continues to show up in Firestar's and his descendants' dreams throughout the series. Currently residing in StarClan.
- Almost-Dead Guy: In The Last Hope when her spirit is dying.
- Celibate Hero: Though she wishes she wasn't.
- Deader Than Dead
- Foil: To Yellowfang, to a certain degree. Both act Spirit Advisors, but have noticeably different temperaments.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In The Last Hope, she dies to save Sandstorm from Mapleshade.
- Identical Grandson: Has an ancestor named Spottedpelt that looks exactly like her - it's what made Firestar realize that Spottedleaf was descended from SkyClan.
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: In The Last Hope, she says that she wasn't jealous of Sandstorm, because all she wanted was for Firestar to be happy.
- Posthumous Character: Almost. She's killed toward the end of the first book, but her spirit shows up in almost every successive book, even to cats born seasons after she died.
- Spirit Advisor
- Too Good for This Sinful Earth
- Yamato Nadeshiko
Yellowfang
A former ShadowClan warrior and medicine cat, Yellowfang was exiled by Brokenstar (her illegitimate son) in the first book, and was captured on ThunderClan territory by a young Firepaw. She remains in ThunderClan as a prisoner until Spottedleaf's death. Disgusted at what her birth Clan has become, she agrees to formally join ThunderClan as their medicine cat. Currently resides in StarClan.
- Action Girl: As with pretty much all female characters. Notable for being a medicine cat.
- Almost-Dead Guy
- Cool Old She-cat
- Deadpan Snarker: She is rather sarcastic and blunt.
- Defeat Means Friendship: She and Firepaw get along very well after he beats her in combat.
- Foil: To Spottedleaf, to a certain degree. Both act as Spirit Advisors, but have noticeably different temperaments.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Fireheart.

- Mentor Occupational Hazard
- Offing the Offspring: Kills her son Brokentail in book 3 so that he would no longer cause harm to other cats, and then kills him again in The Last Hope.
- Spirit Advisor: Seems to be filling this role for Jayfeather.
Cinderpelt
Firestar's first apprentice, Cinderpelt was hit by a car early in the series, badly breaking and twisting her leg. Because of this, she was unable to become a warrior, and instead trained under Yellowfang as medicine cat. She remains a close friend and confidante of Firestar throughout the series. She is killed during the badger attack, but StarClan reincarnated her as Cinderheart, who is now able to live the life of a warrior that Cinderpelt had to give up.
- Action Girl: Averted
- Almost-Dead Guy
- Ascended to A Higher Plane of Existence: In The Last Hope.
- Blue Eyes

- Heroic Sacrifice: Dies preventing the badgers from harming her brother's newborn kits. She actually gets reincarnated as one of those kits.

- Reincarnation: She's alive and well even after her death, as Cinderheart. She doesn't remember her past life though (at least, not while awake).
- Sibling Yin-Yang: When she and Brackenfur were first apprenticed to them, both Fireheart and Graystripe lampshaded how energetic Cinderpaw was to the more responsible Brackenpaw.
Cloudtail
Firestar's nephew, who was also born a kittypet. His mother gave him to Firestar to take back to the Clans after hearing how much Firestar liked his life there. Although the Clan was very unhappy about this, they eventually came to accept him. He does not believe in StarClan but is loyal to ThunderClan and utterly devoted to his mate Brightheart.
- Badass Grandpa: In the later series
- Blue Eyes
- Deadpan Snarker: His comments are like barbed wire. Even the narrative lampshades it.
- Flat Earth Atheist: He has seen accurate predictions of the future, as well as his uncle coming Back from the Dead several times, yet still refuses to believe that there is anything supernatural going on, calling StarClan a "tale to scare kits".
- Berserk Button: Murder, especially that of cats he was close to. Unfortunately, this anger usually amounts to Firestar telling him to chill.
- Skeptic No Longer: He sees StarClan for the first time in The Last Hope.
Whitestorm
Bluestar's nephew, and one of the more well-respected warriors in ThunderClan, he remained a good friend to both her and Firestar. He also served as Firestar's first deputy. Currently residing in StarClan.
- Almost-Dead Guy
- Cool Old Guy: Was already quite old at the time of Into the Wild
Dustpelt
Originally one of Tigerclaw's supporters, Dustpelt was horrified when the warrior's treachery was revealed, and refused to follow him any further. Though he has personally never liked Firestar, he nonetheless holds respect for Firestar as a leader and a warrior, and his loyalty to ThunderClan is absolute.

- Morality Pet: He's totally dere towards Ferncloud!
- The Rival: He and Firestar had a rivalry in the Original Series, but they came to respect each other.
- Tsundere: He spits acid out to everyone else but is a complete softie to Ferncloud. Commence the squeeing.
- Unlucky Childhood Friend: To Sandstorm.
Darkstripe
The most loyal follower of Tigerstar, Darkstripe is disliked by mostly everybody in the Clans, including his leader, due to his deceitful, arrogant nature. Currently residing in the Place Of No Stars.
- Bathroom Break Out: Tells Brackenfur, who's supposed to be watching him, that he needs to make dirt. He goes behind a bush and sneaks away.
- Butt Monkey: All the time.
Leopardstar: "Thank StarClan I'm not [your leader]. You're about as much use as a dead fox." (The Darkest Hour)
Hawkfrost: "Though I expected better of you, Darkstripe. I would have thought you could hold your own against an untrained apprentice." (Fading Echoes)
Brokenstar: "He's no better than a whining kit." (Night Whispers)
- Commander Contrarian: While in ThunderClan. By the end of the series, no one ever agreed with him.
- Depraved Homosexual: In Fanon.
- The Dragon: To Tigerstar in the Original Series. In his mind anyway.
- Undying Loyalty: To Tigerstar.
Snowkit
A kit in A Dangerous Path. He is deaf, which leads him to be carried off by a hawk.
- Blue Eyes: According to Frostfur, white cats with blue eyes are often deaf.
- Bury Your Disabled: Type 2. Justified, given the setting.
- Cruel and Unusual Death
- Sorry, Billy, But You Just Don't Have Legs: An unusual example where it's his mother, rather than him, that refuses to accept the disability.
Lionheart
A senior warrior and Graystripe's mentor. Dies in the first book
- Cool Old Guy: In Into the Wild, he is almost an elder already.
- Mentor Occupational Hazard
- Secret Keeper: When he was an apprentice, he spotted Pinestar visiting a Twoleg nest. Pinestar asks him to keep it secret, and Lionpaw wonders whether Pinestar will name him Liontrust or Lionloyal because of this.
Brightheart
Cloudtail's mate. She gets mauled by dogs when she joins Swiftpaw in trying to convince Bluestar to make her a warrior during Bluestar's crazy period.
- Action Girl: A special example.
- Blue Eyes
- Eye Scream: Take a good look at the picture.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: She had half of her face ripped off by dogs, but is one of the kindest cats in the series.
- Morality Pet: To Cloudtail.
- Scars Are Forever: She'll never forget her foolish choice to go after the dogs.
Willowpelt
Mate of Whitestorm (earlier, the mate of Tawnyspots, as confirmed by Word of God)
- Brother-Sister Incest: She was stated in the family trees to be Graystripe's mother, with Patchpelt being the father. However, it was later revealed that they were sisters and brothers. Erin Hunter even said they were Graystripe's parents in her facebook account, but then recanted the statement and said the family trees were false.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Gets killed when pushing her son out of the way of a badger's claws.
- May-December Romance: With Tawnyspots.
Longtail
- Career-Ending Injury: Went blind after a rabbit scratched his eyes, forcing him to retire.

- Dropped a Bridge on Him: Although, he fared better than Oakheart who actually got something dropped on him.
- The Lancer: To Bluestar. Apparently.
Thornclaw
Brother of Brightheart, Cinderpelt and Brackenfur, Thornclaw is the first cat Firestar ever named a warrior, which is something he's quite proud of.
- Commander Contrarian
- Face Heel Turn: He visited the Dark Forest in The Last Hope. But since this was never mentioned again, he most likely defected.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He may not be very nice, but that doesn't mean he's not willing to rescue enemy Clan cats from danger.
The New Prophecy
Brambleclaw
"I don't think I'll ever be free of him. Even now that he's dead, no cat will ever forget that I'm his son."
One of the protagonists of the second series of books, Brambleclaw is the son of Tigerstar, something which causes him a great deal of angst[1]. He is determined to continually prove himself a loyal and virtuous warrior. He was chosen by StarClan to be one of the cats to journey to Midnight and find a new home for the Clans, and currently holds the position of deputy of ThunderClan. Trained in The Place Of No Stars during the events of The New Prophecy In The Last Hope, he becomes Bramblestar.
- Acid Reflux Nightmare: He originally thinks his prophecy dream was one of these.
- Amber Eyes
- Ambition Is Evil: Averted, being the one thing that makes him different from Hawkfrost.
- Cain and Abel: With Hawkfrost.
- The Chosen One
- Generation Xerox: In appearance, anyway.
- I Am Not My Father: Though, as he notes in the above quote, he'll have to fight the perception that he is for his entire life.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He goes batshit crazy on Hawkfrost for killing his adopted daughter in The Last Hope.
- Turn Out Like His Father
- Unexpected Successor: A lot of ThunderClan was surprised when he became the deputy.
Squirrelflight
"And I'm sick of you flapping your wings like an injured sparrow, feeling oh so sorry for yourself. You're not the only cat suffering. Your pain isn't the hardest to bear."
Another second series protagonist, and Firestar's daughter. Originally a hot-headed young cat, she has matured into a capable and strong warrior. She goes on the journey with the four chosen cats in the second series, despite not being chosen herself, and during that time develops into Brambleclaw's Love Interest. As of The Last Hope, she is the deputy of ThunderClan.
- Action Girl: As with pretty much all female characters.
- Fiery Red Pelt
- Green Eyes

- The Unchosen One
Leafpool
"It's all right. I'll stay here and take good care of the Clan, I promise. One day we'll meet again, walking among the stars."
Firestar's other daughter, and yet another second series protagonist. Leafpool takes the opposite path her sister does, and becomes ThunderClan's medicine cat. She is described as being her sister's complete opposite, polite and soft-spoken where Squirrelflight is loud and brash.
- Amber Eyes
- Blue Oni: To Squirrelflight's Red.
- Celibate Hero: Subverted.
- Girly Girl: To Squirreflight's Tomboy.
- Keeping Secrets Sucks: Keeping the secret about Brambleclaw's prophecy puts Leafpaw in a position where she's strained by loyalty to her sister and loyalty to her father.
- Luke, I Am Your Father
- Meaningful Name: Named after Leafstar and possibly Spottedleaf.
- Secret Keeper: She's the only cat back in the Clans that knows why the traveling cats left, and she also is trusted with keeping the fire-and-tiger sign secret. She also figures out later that Hollyleaf killed Ashfur, and keeps this secret as well.
- Shrinking Violet
- Twin Telepathy
- What the Hell, Hero?: It's subtly implied that she disapproved of Squirrelflight's decision to leave Ashfur.
Ashfur
"I have no quarrel with Brambleclaw. I couldn't care less about Brambleclaw. It's not his fault he fell for a faithless she-cat. I know you think I've never forgiven Brambleclaw for stealing you from me, but you're wrong, and so is every cat that thinks so. My quarrel is with you, Squirrelflight. It always has been."
Squirrelflight's Romantic False Lead in The New Prophecy. When she chooses Brambleclaw, he doesn't take it well. To be more precise, he tries to make her feel the same amount of emotional pain that he felt when she turned him down by killing some of her family members. When that doesn't work out, he tries to publicly humiliate her. Currently residing in StarClan as of Omen of the Stars.
- Always Second Best
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Becomes this.
- Blue Eyes: Dark blue eyes, to be precise.
- Disproportionate Retribution: His attempts on revenge, depending on whether you think Squirrelflight hurt him deeply enough to justify them.
- Face Heel Turn: Starts out a kind, considerate cat, ends up more or less insane and hungry for revenge.
- Karma Houdini: In-universe, Jayfeather doesn't buy Yellowfang's explanation that Ashfur made it to StarClan because "His only fault was loving too much", despite his numerous murder attempts on himself, his siblings, Sqirrelflight, and Firestar. Out of universe, your mileage WILL vary. Greatly.
- Love Makes You Evil: Need we even explain?
- The Mole
- Nice Guy: At least, until the third series. Or halfway through the second series, depending on your opinion.
- Roaring Rampage of Revenge
- Romantic False Lead: To Squirrelflight.
- Secret Keeper: [He doesn't tell his clanmates that Cloudtail is sneaking twoleg food.]
- Stepford Smiler: Nice enough on the outside. Madman out for revenge on the inside.
- The Stoic: He kept his anger and grief to himself rather than talking about it with someone, which wasn't too good for his mental health.
Sorreltail
The kit of Whitestorm and Willowpelt, Sorreltail is a strong warrior who has seen a lot of trauma.
- Action Girl
- Happily Mated: To Brackenfur
- SHe Knows Too Much: Subverted. She learns something she wasn't supposed to, but survives the attempt on her life.

- Happily Mated: To Birchfall
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: When Lionblaze was trying to guess which ThunderClan cats might train with the Dark Forest, he had a "No. Just... No" Reaction when considering Whitewing.
- White Furred Pretty Girl

Birchfall
The kit of Dustpelt and Ferncloud, as well as Whitewing's mate.

- Hot-Blooded: Most definitely. Even more so after joining the Dark Forest.
- Idiot Hero: Oh yes. Exploited by the Dark Forest.
- Papa Wolf: Wants to lead a patrol to rescue his daughter Ivypool after she gets kidnapped by ShadowClan.
Spiderleg
ThunderClan's resident Jerkass. That's really all there is to say about him, other than how he had a one-night stand with Daisy.
- Character Development: Somehow avoided. In Sign of the Moon, his praise of Dovewing makes it look like he's turning into a nicer guy, but then in The Forgotten Warrior, his treatment of a newly returned Hollyleaf shows that he's still an asshole.
- Fauxshadowing: The creepy wind that blows when Firestar announces his warrior name.
- Jerkass
Era Of The Three (Power of Three/Omen of the Stars)
Lionblaze
"I know what it's like to have a power no other cat understands. It's the loneliest feeling in the world."

Hollyleaf
"I can't stay here. I know I did the right thing, but no cat will ever understand!"
Another third series protagonist, and sister of Jayfeather and Lionblaze. She places great importance on the Warrior Code, sometimes to levels other cats consider a bit extreme. After learning the truth of her heritage, that she is the result of an extremely illegal union according to the Warrior Code, she goes a bit crazy. She had last been seen running into a collapsing tunnel, presumed to be dead by her Clan. In The Forgotten Warrior, she was found to be living just outside the territory, and has rejoined the Clan.

- In The Last Hope, she tells Lionblaze she doesn't want to be the fourth, just a good warrior.
- Knight Templar
- Meaningful Name: Named after her mother, Leafpool.
- May not be intentional, but holly berries are poisonous, meaning her name could also be a reference to her trying to force Leafpool to eat deathberries in Sunrise.
- Missed the Call
- Not Quite Dead
- Out, Damned Spot!: It's mentioned that she can still taste Ashfur's blood in her mouth.
- Stranger in a Familiar Land: After her return in The Forgotten Warrior.
- Tragic Hero: Her obsession with the Warrior Code is her tragic flaw, and it leads to downfall in Sunrise.
- Walking Spoiler: Check out all her pretty spoiler tags. Don't open them if you haven't finished The Last Hope, because she hates it when you break the rules.
Jayfeather
"One day we will be so powerful that we will command StarClan!"
Third series protagonist, and brother of Hollyleaf and Lionblaze. He is blind, and absolutely hates being treated as different or helpless because of it. - Meaningful Name: Named after his father, Crowfeather.
- Prophet Eyes: Fanart often draws him with these, and he appears with them on at least one foreign edition cover.
- Reincarnation of Jay's Wing
- Secret Keeper: The prophecy, and Hollyleaf killing Ashfur.
- Sorry, Billy, But You Just Don't Have Legs: Aspires to be a warrior, but is forced to come to terms with the fact that his blindness will keep him from doing it.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Water.
Dovewing
"Maybe it won't be so bad, having these powers, if I can use them to help my Clan."
Protagonist of the fourth series. Dovewing is the third and final cat with "the power of the stars", with her special ability being extremely acute senses that can easily hear and smell things from miles away.
- Blessed with Suck: Her powers don't really help in the middle of a battle, or when she's around Twolegs with all the noise they make.
- Brought Down to Normal: She loses her power sometime in between Sign of the Moon and The Forgotten Warrior for unknown reasons, but gets it back later.
- The Chosen One
- Fights Like a Normal: She has powers, but they're actually a hindrance in battle more than anything.

- Sensory Overload: When she goes to the mountains in Sign of the Moon.

- Wide-Eyed Idealist: So much that in The Last Hope, she refuses to disclose the identities of the Dark Forest recruits in hope that they turn good.
Ivypool
"I just wanted to be as good as Dovepaw. I wanted to be so good that everyone would notice me, too."
Dovewing's sister, and a fourth series protagonist. She lacks her sister's powers, and is a bit troubled by that, as she wants to be seen as her sister's equal.
- Action Girl: As with pretty much all female characters.
- Always Second Best: To Dovewing
- Blue Eyes
- Dark Is Not Evil
- Green-Eyed Monster: Stops in Night Whispers, however.
- Heel Realization
- I Just Want to Be Special
- Reverse Mole
- Sibling Rivalry: With Dovewing.
- Tomboy: To Dovepaw's Girly Girl, due mostly to her love of fighting.
Cinderheart
"Tell Leafpool she doesn't need to worry, because I'll be alright this time."
A kit of Brackenfur and Sorreltail. She is the reincarnation of Cinderpelt, who was killed in a badger attack, and is a major ally of the three.

- Commander Contrarian
