Rance/Characters/Magic Kingdom of Zeth

The Kingdom of Zeth is known throughout the Continent as the country with the most mages. Consequently, they have the most advanced technology, on par with the Free Cities Alliance, running on Magitek for almost everything from security installations to computers and GPS, albeit magic powered by magic rather than electricity.

Zeth was founded by a runaway mage known as Parsley Rig Zeth, who wanted to escape the grasp of the growing Helman Republic and create a country where mages would not be persecuted after the defeat of the Holy Magic Sect. With the help of the Apostle Lucy Jiuletta and a Warlord, she managed to claim a territory large enough after two years of war.

The country is mainly ruled by mages, who began to abuse their power near the end of the GI Era, and by the time of Rance VI, the people are separated by castes: 1st Class citizens (mages) who can use technology, are given special privileges and money, opposed to 2nd Class citizens (non-mages), deprived of rights and victims of prejudice by mages, and living in poverty.

The most important construction ever made by Zeth is the Maginot Line, a long and magical wall with cannons powered by "mana batteries", the energy source of all Zeth's technology, and protecting the country from invasions of the Monster Realm in the west.

Zeth Royalty

King Ragnarokarc Super Gandhi

The current King of Zeth. He once used to govern the country, but the recent rise in power of the nobility of the 1st Class and their segregation of the 2nd Class made him unofficially quit his functions, to take the mantle of "Punisher Mito", a vigilante roaming around the cities to bring justice for the people of the 2nd Class. During the Monster invasion of Rance VI, he later joins Rance to restart the Maginot Line, and after saving the country, he once again shoved his duties to Chizuko Yamada, to her dismay. He's also seen in Rance X, trapped within the city of Ragnarokarc alongside his two bodyguards.

Tropes exhibited by Gandhi include:
  • The Ace: Along with having an enormous level cap of 99, he's regarded as the strongest mage in Zeth and possesses the physical strength necessary to be skilled with both swords and his bare hands. On top of that, he continues to be a hit with women half his age well into his forties and is apparently incredible in bed.
  • Action Dad: His daughter is still in high school during their mutual debut.
  • Anime Hair: His design from Rance VI onwards has his hair styled up in a very distinct, rather strange way.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Along with being the King of Zeth, he's one of the most powerful individuals in the world.
  • Authority in Name Only: A strange case. While he does have all of the power and influence that a king is expected to have, his complete disinterest in actually doing his kingly duties causes him to push almost everything involved with running the country onto his subordinates. To phrase it more accurately, he's an Authority in Name Only by his own volition.
  • Awesome McCoolname: Ragnarokarc Super Gandhi.
  • Badass Cape: He sports a very swanky purple cape from Rance VI onwards.
  • Badass in Distress: The monster army's invasion of Zeth in Rance X leaves him, Kaoru and Wichita trapped inside of the city of Ragnarokarc after it becomes occupied by Medusa's forces. Despite their situation, the three continue to fight through waves of monsters in an effort to free the capital themselves.
  • Berserk Button: People who abuse the weak and people who don't own up to their mistakes.
  • Big Good: Functions as this in Rance VI, where he supports Ice Flame from the shadows in its efforts to fight against the discrimination within Zeth before taking on a much more active role in assisting Rance and Urza in defeating the invading monster army. He also functions as this from a broader perspective to the series as a whole, as he is the only world leader to be conscious of and actively trying to prepare for the inevitable conflict with the Monster Realm prior to Rance X, where it becomes the main focus.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gets along well with Mi Lordring, to the point of choosing to back him during the Murara test, despite him having some of the worst projected chances of winning, simply due to admiring his style. Naturally, the two are both Hot-Blooded Cloudcuckoolanders who make up for their ineffectual and straightforward methods with sheer passion.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Rather unexpectedly, considering that he's the King of a nation of mages, Gandhi is a high-spirited and Hot-Blooded manly man who prefers to throw down with a sword or his bare fists whenever he's able to.
  • Carpet of Virility: Sports an enormous strip of chest hair in Kichikuou Rance, to cement himself as a rugged man's man.
  • The Chains of Commanding: Gandhi is suggested to dislike being the king of a country due to the large amount of restrictions that it places on his freedom. Because of this, he does everything in his power to avoid having to actually act as king, and is almost never actually seen doing his job.
  • Chick Magnet: Kaoru, Wichita and Chizuko are all in love with him, and he's suggested to have many more admirers that we simply don't get to see. His unit in Kichikuou Rance, which has a starting size of 500 people, is stated to be made entirely of women who are in love with him.
  • Cincinnatus: Attempts to invoke this in the late game of Rance VI by declaring that the most useful person who assists in the restoration of the Maginot Line will be declared the new King of Zeth, clearly intending from the beginning to choose Rance. Unfortunately for him, Rance flees the country on the very same day that he was supposed to be crowned king, forcing Gandhi to retain his position as king for the time being.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Particularly in Kichikuou Rance, where his thinking includes such gems as genuinely believing that the only way to truly reform muggers and rapists is by paying them or letting them have sex with you, respectively. Downplayed in the canonical games, but considering the fact that he doesn't even bother wearing a disguise when working as a vigilante, he still is one.
  • Cool but Inefficient: His entire character could be summarized as this. A progressively-minded king who attempts to reform his country by becoming a vigilante and using his awesome powers to beat up and arrest every corrupt authority figure responsible for the nation's continued decay before handing them over to the police sounds cool on paper, but in execution only makes it easier for the very same people to have their way, as he isn't ever around as king to prevent them from enforcing the continued discrimination of 2nd class citizens and they can use their influence to easily escape their prison sentences after he has them arrested.
  • Cool Old Guy: He's pushing 50 by Rance X, but is outrageously badass on top of being astonishingly progressive.
  • Covert Pervert: Was apparently something of a skirt-chaser in his youth. Despite not really showing traces of it now, he still has a clear preference for surrounding himself with beautiful young women.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: He is tortured and ripped apart by Medusa in Rance X.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: While it is possible for him to avoid dying during Rance X, part 2 heavily implies and ETERNAL HERO outright confirms that he was canonically killed by Medusa.
  • Demoted to Extra: Plays no significant role in Rance Quest, but appears a few times nonetheless.
  • Eleventh-Hour Ranger: He joins Rance's party during the operation to restart the Maginot Line at the end of Rance VI, where he can indisputably be described as the single strongest party member in the game.
  • Foil: To Lia. While Lia is a conniving and self-absorbed Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who is nonetheless a competent ruler who has led her country to prosperity, Gandhi is a compassionate Nice Guy whose attempts at reforming his country have only resulted in it falling deeper into ruin.
  • Forced to Watch: His Cruel and Unusual Death is broadcast live throughout Zeth in Rance X.
  • Former Teen Rebel: Gandhi was apparently an absolute brat as a kid, and is implied to have been rather similar to Rance of all people when he was a young man, but is now a kind and gentle individual.
  • Gentle Giant: Huge enough to be mistaken for a Helmanian, but also extremely compassionate.
  • The Good King: Played with. While he's a compassionate person who wants more than anything to end the discrimination within his country, he goes about doing so by completely abandoning his responsibilities as king in order to run around as a vigilante. Though he gives a fairly reasonable justification for this behavior, stating that the people of Zeth need to unite as one through their own actions in order for true equality to be attained, there's no denying that the country probably wouldn't be in nearly as bad shape as it is at the beginning of Rance VI if he'd just do his actual job for once and start enforcing his authority as king.
  • Guest Star Party Member: Joins the party for the duration of the Fruit Ruins in Rance VI, but leaves upon reaching the Maginot Line and never comes back.
  • Heroes Fight Barehanded: Unlike other mages, he prefers to fight unarmed with magically enhanced fists due to his belief that fighting from a distance is cowardly. It actually helps when someone tries to corner him with hannies (naturally immune to magic) thinking that he'd be rendered unable to beat them, only for him to obliterate them in seconds with his punches.
  • He Is All Grown Up: While the audience only ever sees him as a grown man, he apparently underwent this across his life. He was a rude and ill-tempered Royal Brat as a child, but went on to grow into a kind and all-around upstanding man.
  • Holy Backlight: Introduced surrounded by one in Rance VI, to immediately establish himself as a majestic Large Ham.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Particularly in Kichikuou Rance, where he becomes convinced that Rance is the messiah and refuses to acknowledge that he could be anything less than a flawless All-Loving Hero, even when it's clear to almost everyone else that he's anything but. It's also present to a lesser extent in the canonical games, where, while more aware of Rance's flaws than in Kichikuou, he's still way too quick to give him more credit than he deserves.
  • Hope Bringer: Due to his status as Zeth's strongest mage and him being a benevolent ruler, most of the citizens looks up to him in times of need. Weaponized by Medusa in Rance X where she stuffs him into the fridge for everyone to see.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's a very passionate guy, whether he's happy, sad or angry. Rance always uses the words "big" and "loud" when describing him.
  • Hunk: Even in his late forties, Gandhi is a tall, muscular and handsome man.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: It's all but stated that most of his major life choices, from his decision to abandon his throne in favor of vigilantism, to his fascination with Rance, are due to his desire to live the life of a globe-trotting, world-saving and free-spirited hero that he never could do to his obligations as a member of the royal family.
  • Informed Ability: Possesses the Sword Combat level 1 skill level, but is never shown wielding a sword outside of Kichikuou Rance, the only game where he is ironically not listed as possessing said skill.
  • Irony: The person most concerned about preparing for the impending battle with the Fiends ultimately ends up dying during the battle itself without contributing much to it due to recklessly attempting to challenge a Fiend on his own.
  • Karmic Death: The narration of Rance X emphasizes that it was his own reckless desire to be a hero, which is one of the defining aspects of his character, that led to his death due to him attempting to defeat Medusa with only the aid of Kaoru and Wichita rather than wait for outside aid to come and assist him.
  • King Incognito: Hides his identity as the King of Zeth in order to work as a vigilante and, in Kichikuou Rance, as Rance's personal servant. He doesn't do a very good job of hiding it in either case, though, not even bothering wearing a disguise in the former and giving out his real name when introducing himself in the latter.
  • Kung Fu Wizard: Crazy powerful whether he's using his magic or his fists, and can soak up damage from physical and magical attacks no problem, overall making him one of the few mages that is totally capable of being a frontline fighter.
  • Lame Excuse: Claims to be suffering from a bad case of diarrhea if the player attempts to send him to fight against Zeth in Kichikuou Rance. He stops doing this after the Flash drops, where he outs himself as king and willingly fights against his own people in order to punish them for their actions.
  • Large and In Charge: One of the biggest men on the Continent and the king of one of the largest countries in the world.
  • Large Ham: Gandhi is very dramatic and is noted to have a loud, bellowing voice. His favorite thing? JUSTICE! His personal hobby? CHANGING THE WORLD!
  • Last-Name Basis: Only ever called by his last name.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Gandhi hits like a truck, is fast, and is around two meters tall. This is reflected by his character card in Rance X, where, along with having very high stats, he has the honor of being the only character with a 0 AP magic attack, allowing him to attack much more frequently than most other characters.
  • The Lost Lenore: His wife died shortly after their daughter's birth. While he's mostly moved on from mourning her, he refuses to pursue any other woman romantically. Depending on your actions, he can finally move on from her completely and become engaged to Eropicha in Rance X.
  • Love-Obstructing Parents: While he doesn't dislike Alex, he believes him to be too indecisive to be a worthy king, and thus has no intention of arranging a marriage between him and his daughter. Completely inverted with regards to Magic's relationship with Rance, where he is almost obnoxiously too devoted to supporting them as a couple.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Accompanied by the Mach Piyo, the world's fastest creature, throughout Kichikuou Rance. This is not carried over into any of his future appearances.
  • Magic Knight: In Kichikuou Rance, he can blast enemies with magic or slash them with his sword. He, along with Hunty, is one of the only physical/magical hybrid characters that avoids being a Master of None.
  • Mandatory Unretirement: Proclaims that he intends to step down as King of Zeth following the eradication of the invading monster army in Rance VI, clearly intending to pass on the position to Rance. When Rance flees the country before his inauguration, Gandhi is forced to remain king, though he for the most part continues to act as though he is retired so that he can do other stuff.
  • Manly Tears: Produces in Ocular Gushers whenever he's particularly moved by Rance's actions.
  • May–December Romance: He can potentially get married to Eropicha in Rance X, who is the same age as his daughter.
  • Mighty Glacier: In Rance VI, in order to prevent him from being too overpowered, Gandhi has very low SP and can only be used in three battles per dungeon before being rendered unusable.
  • Modest Royalty: So modest, in fact, that he's perfectly willing to hand his entire country over to you if he likes you enough. He's clearly at his happiest when he gets to be away from the palace and play adventurer.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Experiences this in Kichikuou Rance after Zeth uses the Flash against Leazas, causing him to realize that his absence led the country to fall deep into corruption. Being the kind of guy that he is, he goes about atoning for it by revealing himself as Zeth's king to Rance and giving him full permission to conquer it, believing it to be beyond redemption in its current state. He can experience a second one in the "Unification" ending, where he finally realizes that Rance isn't the Messiah that he thought he was and takes up arms to end his tyrannical rule.
  • Named After Somebody Famous: His name is derived from Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Nice Guy: Gandhi is a compassionate man who always tries to support the unfortunate.
  • Not So Different: Kaoru speculates that Gandhi was a lot like Rance when he was younger. From what we hear about Gandhi's youth, she's likely right.
  • Odd Friendship: While his deep respect for Rance can partly be attributed to being a Horrible Judge of Character, Gandhi sincerely admires Rance's decisive nature and ability to take action to achieve his goals no matter what. Rance isn't nearly as enthusiastic about their relationship, and makes it no secret that he finds Gandhi annoying, but is at least cool enough with him to be willing to casually hang out and play various board games with him, something that he'd almost never agree to do with a man. Rance is also completely livid upon witnessing Gandhi's death, showing that he truly did value him as a friend deep down.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: It is mentioned in VI that there has been a noble coup d'etat before, the reason it didn't succeed was because Gandhi beat them into submission by himself.
  • The One Guy: The only male ruler among the Human Realm's largest nations. As a result, he tends to get substituted by either Magic or Chizuko in promotional materials focusing on national rulers. He is also the only playable male commander from Zeth in Kichikuou Rance.
  • One-Man Army: With a level cap of 99 and a level 2 Magic skill, Gandhi is regarded as being one of the strongest people in the world, with even a simple fireball spell from him being comparable in power to high-level magic.
  • Out of Focus: Notably does not receive very much focus in Rance X, on account of potentially being killed off. If the player manages to save him, he makes a point of deliberately invoking this, stating that he wants to downplay his presence and contributions during the war as much as possible in order for the people of Zeth to think of Magic rather than him as the person who led them to victory in their darkest hour. While he is added to most events involving Zeth or major figures from around the world, he never contributes much of significance to them to avoid altering them drastically from how they happen when he isn't around.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: He doesn't put a lot of work into hiding his identity when acting as Punisher Mito. In Rance VI, he doesn't even bother wearing any kind of disguise at all.
  • Parental Marriage Veto: Downplayed, he doesn't have anything against Alex Valse, but expects him to be more assertive in order to be the future King of Zeth and marry his daughter.
  • Parental Neglect: While he loves and has high hopes for his daughter Magic, he is generally too caught up in his misguided attempts at changing the world to be able to support her.
  • Passing the Torch: If he's still alive when Zeth manages to liberate itself in Rance X, he officially abdicates his throne to Magic in recognition of her leading Zeth in his absence throughout the 2nd Fiend War.
  • The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Despite being the King of Zeth, he's rarely seen doing any actual ruling, and leaves most of the work leading the country to Chizuko. This is actually acknowledged in-universe and has led to him becoming a very divisive figure within Zeth, with him even earning the disparaging nickname of "the Wandering King" in reference to how infrequently he's actually around to run his country.
  • Purple Is Powerful: He's the King of Zeth and one of the strongest people in the world, and wears a primarily purple-colored outfit from Rance VI onwards.
  • Purposefully Overpowered: Outside of his tiny SP pool, he is pretty much the single best character in every regard in Rance VI. Unfortunately, the player only gets to use him a handful of times before he's removed from the party permanently.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Zig-zagged. While he's a progressively-minded guy who actively tries to rid his country of its deep-seated discrimination, he chooses to do so by abandoning his responsibilities as a king, inadvertently causing more problems than he solves. That said, he proves to be genuinely competent and useful during the efforts to retake Zeth from the monster army in Rance VI, and recognizes people solely based on merit rather than rank or status.
  • Reluctant Ruler: It's heavily implied that both Gandhi's decision to attempt to reform his country through vigilantism instead of by enforcing his authority as king and his intense fascination with Rance are due to him possessing an intense desire to live the life of a globe-trotting, world-saving and free-spirited hero rather the restrictive one of a king. Throughout all of his appearances, he makes any excuse he can to attempt to fob his responsibilities off on someone else.
  • Royal Brat: Was apparently a violent troublemaker as a child and a womanizer as a young man.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Deconstructed. While Gandhi sincerely wants to reform Zeth, he believes that the only true way of doing so is by spreading justice across the country by working as a vigilante, hoping that doing so would inspire the rest of Zeth to put aside their differences and come together. By doing this, though, he creates a power vacuum within the upper echelons of the nation's government, allowing the very people he's trying to go against to carry out their actions unopposed and making things harder for everyone. Essentially, he's a royal who does something, but the thing that he does is the wrong thing to do. He plays it straighter during times of war in all three of his major appearances, where he actively fights on the frontlines to protect his country.
  • Sacrificial Lion: His death in Rance X is one of the most difficult to avoid, requiring both Fiends invading Zeth to be defeated in a single turn rather than within a certain number of turns like most of the others, and he is by far the most powerful and important human character that can potentially be killed off. Naturally, the entire nation of Zeth begins to cross the Despair Event Horizon upon seeing him fall.
  • Second Love: Ends up remarrying Eropicha of all people if he manages to survive and Alex dies in Rance X.
  • Secret Character: Essentially amounts to being this in Rance X. His survival requires you to defeat both Galtia and Medusa within a single turn, something which is very unlikely to the point of verging on being impossible in your first playthrough. In comparison, with the exception of Cordoba, every other character who can potentially die simply requires you to defeat a specific Fiend before a certain number of turns pass to be saved, which can be done with enough work even on your first playthrough.
  • Senseless Sacrifice: His death in Rance X ultimately amounts to this. It only occurred because he was too reckless and tried to fight Medusa with only the aid of his vassals, and the only thing that it managed to accomplish was making the people of the country fall even deeper into despair than they already were.
  • Sex God: His sexual technique is apparently incredible. He actually gets to show it off in Kichikuou Rance if you take him to Peach Blossom Springs, where he is able to bring his opponents to orgasm the fastest of any male commander, and has only slightly less stamina than Rance himself. In fact, unless you get really lucky using Rance, he's the only character who has a chance at winning every single round and getting the top prize.
  • Shipper on Deck: Happily supports the idea of Rance marrying his daughter, mostly because he really wants him as a son-in-law.
  • Shout-Out: His vigilante persona, Punisher Mito, is directly based off of the Japanese drama series Mito Kōmon. In fact, it's suggested that Mito Kōmon also exists within the Rance universe, as Gandhi is specifically stated to have based the persona off of a book that he read.
  • So Proud of You: Says almost these words exactly to Magic when he crowns her Queen of Zeth in Rance X.
  • Super Reflexes: The origin of his friendship with the Mach Piyo? He caught it with a pair of chopsticks while it was flying near him. For reference, this is a bird that is faster than Meglass.
  • Testosterone Poisoning: Everything about Gandhi exudes an excessive amount of manliness.
  • Tsundere: Back when he was a kid he bullied Rizna remorselessly (her crazy-high magic resistance? It's a result of her getting blasted by his magic so much!) in order to cover up the enormous crush he had on her. No longer present after they reunite, where Gandhi is nothing but kind to her and even allows her to live in his palace after learning that she has nowhere else to go.
  • Undying Loyalty: At times it seems like he's more loyal to Rance than he is to his own country.
  • Unfit for Greatness: While Gandhi is an amazing man, it's made clear that he is a terrible, terrible ruler. His heart's in the right place, but he lacks both the talent and interest in politics to competently lead his country, and spends almost all of his time avoiding doing anything as king at all costs. Thankfully, the Four Lords are, following the end of Rance VI, at least, all skilled enough to be able to run Zeth competently even when he can't. He's able to step up to the position considerably better during times of crisis, where his status as a prime example of Authority Equals Asskicking allows him to play an active role in resolving the problem.
  • Unlucky Childhood Friend: Had a crush on Rizna when they were younger, but her becoming trapped in Genbu Castle prevented anything from coming of it. By the time they reunite, not only is Gandhi far older than her, but Rizna has already fallen in love with Rance.
  • Vigilante Man: Prior to and during the events of Rance VI he personally arrested criminals who abused 2nd class citizens around Zeth under the alias of Punisher Mito, assisted by Kaoru and Wichita. In Kichikuou Rance, he is stated to wander all around the world doing this, but is only ever seen in the Free Cities.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He's one of the few men who could genuinely be called Rance's friend, but unlike Rick, Patton or Nobunaga, Rance still tends to be pretty dismissive of and annoyed by him.
  • Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Gandhi is a reckless Large Ham with a tendency of being a Cloudcuckoolander while his daughter Magic is studious and very concerned about being taken seriously by others. She's frequently exasperated by his antics as a result.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Believes that true peace and equality can only be achieved within a society if the people put aside their differences and make it happen on their own rather than by having a distant authority figure force them to. While this sounds like a perfectly respectable opinion at a glance, it amounts to him allowing his country to be pushed to the brink of ruin all because he refused to step in and assert his authority as king.
  • You Are in Command Now: Constantly attempts to retire from his throne and pass on leadership to someone else. In the later parts of Rance VI, he sets up the operation to restore the Maginot Line as a contest as an excuse to make Rance the new king of Zeth. When Rance bails afterwards, he continues acting as though he's retired and forces Chizuko to keep doing all of the work that should be his responsibility. If kept alive in Rance X, he finally successfully inducts Magic as his successor.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Looks very different between his appearance in Kichikuou Rance and his appearance in Rance VI. Word of God states that this was done to make his design overlap less with Patton's, who also made his debut as an ally in that game.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Has purple hair from Rance VI onwards.

Magic the Gandhi

The princess of Zeth, currently in an academy for the future Mages of Zeth. She's a righteous woman who always tries to be the best, both in school and in actual magic mastery, earning her place to be one of the Four Lords of Zeth. She's also the fiance of the Light General Alex Valse, but Rance has other plans... Through a series of multiple events, some push from her friend Eropicha, and the fall of Zeth in Rance VI, she's later seen in the party reuniting Zeth and Leazas people. However, she quickly gets drunk and fell asleep in Rance's room. After waking up, she saw Rance sleeping with her and Lia (though Rance actually didn't assault her at all), and feeling unworthy of being with Alex anymore, came to reject him and end her engagement to him.

Afterwards, she spent more and more time with Rance and falls in love with him, partly due to his brash attitude, and prompting her to change his ways as an eventual future King of Zeth. As a result, she quickly develops a rivalry with Lia Parapara Leazas, the Queen of Leazas and also one of Rance's women.

Tropes exhibited by Magic include:
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: In both Kichikuou Rance and the canon games, she considers her father to be incredibly embarrassing to be around due to his Large Ham attitude and tendency to pop up whenever he wants.
  • Based on a Great Big Lie: The main turning point of her relationship with Rance in Rance VI. After being drunk and later waking up next to Rance and Lia, she jumps to conclusions and quickly thinks she's now unworthy to be with the Light General Alex due to possibly having lost her virginity to Rance. The truth on this matter is later revealed in their "second" intercourse.
  • Damsel in Distress: In Kichikuou Rance, she summons the Devil Xacalite to protect her country, but he turned on her rather quickly and locked her in her tower.
  • Defiled Forever: The main reason she dumped Alex, after mistakenly believing to have lost her virginity to Rance.
  • Forehead of Doom: As noticed by several characters. It also serves as a reminder of her hard-headedness. Averted in Rance X when she lets her hair down.
  • Girl in the Tower:
    • Inverted. She's a princess, but also one of the Four Lords who each guard a specific tower.
    • Played straight in Kichikuou Rance after being captured by Xacalite.
  • Love Triangle: Both she and Lia want to marry Rance, who gleefully accepts both but they harbor an intense rivalry for each other.
  • Meganekko: Along with Maria Custard, they are the only main heroines wearing them.
  • Rebellious Princess: Inverted. She is mostly Modest Royalty and works for her country while her father often tries to escape his responsabilities by disguising as a vigilante.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Magic is actually both Princess of Zeth along with being one of the Four Lords protecting the Mana Batteries.
  • Shock and Awe: Her Magic Arts revolves around lightning, falling short behind Kabachahn the Lightning.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: She is the first in her promotion and also wears glasses to boot.
  • Status-Buff Dispel: Her thunder spells can remove buffs in Rance X.

Kaoru Quincy Kagura

A martial artist part of the Quincy family, who act as bodyguards for the king of Zeth. Consequently, she is one of the two woman assisting King Gandhi in his roaming as a vigilante under the alias "Kaku". She's also part of the Ice Flame group during the events of Rance VI in order to get information for the King.

Tropes exhibited by Kaoru include:
  • Action Girl: A given for being the King's bodyguard.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Gandhi is actually much more powerful than her in terms of physical strength, and also fights barehanded.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: Fights entirely barehanded.
  • Bodyguard Babes: Along with Wichita.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She is raped and tortured to death by Medusa in Rance X along with Gandhi.
  • Crutch Character: Somehow an Enforced Trope. For the first half of Rance VI, her decent Level Cap and various skills makes her a good choice for exploring dungeons and fighting, but later events in the game removes her from the party, making her impossible to raise her Level Cap and afterwards is only available for a few late game missions. Only in post-game proper she can be used again, but at this point they are several characters more useful than her.
  • Cute Bruiser: She's depicted as quite attractive along with being able to easily repel Rance's attempts to sleep with her.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: While it is possible to save the trio from death in subsequent playthroughs, Part 2 implies she was canonically killed by Medusa.
  • Difficult, but Awesome: Getting her full potential as a party member in the post-game of Rance VI will require the player to do a lot of grinding before she is kicked from the party as a spy, which happens in the first third of the game and it prevents her to raise her Level Cap.
  • Fangirl: An easy way to distract her is to mention King Gandhi in a conversation. She ends up excitedly talking about him at the expense of all else.
  • The Lancer: She is the second in command of the Green Squad.
  • Mistaken For Lesbian: Rance follows her to a meeting with Wichita and believes they are in a relationship.
  • The Mole: A benevolent exemple: She is actually working for King Gandhi in Rance VI, by leading Ice Flame into revolution.
  • Sword Beam: A variation with her Jujutsu Skill allowing her to project blade beams with her hands.

Wichita Skate

A Spell-blader and part of the Skate family, who also act as bodyguards for the king of Zeth. Alongside Kaoru, she's assisting King Gandhi during under the name "Suke". She's also part of the same academy Magic belongs to and is a friend of hers.

Tropes exhibited by Wichita include:
  • Action Girl: A given for being the King's bodyguard.
  • Birds of a Feather: With Arios Theoman in ETERNAL HERO, due to shared ideals, having lost a loved one, along with having red hair.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Gandhi is actually much more powerful than her in terms of magic power, along with having a great strength.
  • Bodyguard Babes: Along with Kaoru.
  • Flaming Sword: Her main weapon for fighting.
  • Magic Knight: She is perfectly capable of holding her own thanks to her combined Sword and Magic Skills and fights with a Flaming Sword.
  • Platonic Life-Partners: With Arios during ETERNAL HERO. They dearly care for each other and have many similarities, but their deceased loved ones hold a special place in their hearts to even consider entering in a relationship.
  • Royal Rapier: Downplayed. She isn't royalty herself, but rather the bodyguard of the King.
  • Satellite Character: Doesn't get too much screentime in Rance VI, mostly working with Gandhi during his time as Punisher Mito and is almost never seen apart from him.
  • Spell Blade: One of the very few humans capable of mastering both Magic Arts and swordplay.
  • Virgin Tension: She intended to have her first time with Gandhi, as seen in both Kichikuou Rance and Rance VI, but she lost her virginity to Rance, to her great dismay.

Zeth Government

Unlike the Zeth royalty, other people within the government wish to keep their privileges and plan to use any excuse to deprive 2nd Class citizens of even more rights, at the time of the game.

Radon Alphorne

A rather high-ranked mage, Radon is one of the most influencial people in Zeth and the Secretary of Education. He's responsible for establishing the "Presure Free Education", which only restricted eductional opportunities to 1st Class citizens, further enforcing the power gap with the 2nd Class. He's the one who sent the job request taken by Rance in the beginning of Rance VI, and quickly put him into prison, believing he was the slave of Sill Plain.

Tropes exhibited by Radon include:
  • Aristocrats Are Evil: The first antagonist met in Rance VI, responsible for his short time as a slave, is an aristocrat using his privileges of 1st Class Citizen to do whatever he wants.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He loves his daughter so much that he will reveal national secrets to his enemies as long as she is safe.
  • Fat Bastard: Instantly believes Rance to be the slave of Sill Plain upon learning he's not a mage like her.
  • Foil: An interesting one to Fletcher Modell from Helman and Ashikaga Choushin from Nippon. All of them were given special privileges thanks to their status (although Fletcher earned his through hard work unlike the other two), and all of them fit the Fat Bastard role. However, Radon is the only one who redeemed himself and vowed to become a much better person after losing his status at the end of Rance VI.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: His decision to put Rance in the slave arena in the beginning of the game is the starting point for Urza Pranaice's revolution as the Ice Flame leader, after meeting Rance.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: By the end of Rance VI, when he is among the war refugees, and after witnessing the kindness of 2nd Class citizens, espcially Kimchi Drive despite his former status, vows to change himself along with his daughter.

Emi Alphorne

The self-centered daughter of Radon Alphorne. She's one of the first villains Rance gets to see in Rance VI, alongside her fiance Hassam Crown under the guise of "Saberknight", who hunts 2nd Class citizens.

Tropes exhibited by Emi include:

  • Bad Boss: Abuses her servant Dolhan at a regular basis.
  • Masochism: She's revealed to be into it after her capture by Ice Flame in Rance VI, with her fantasizing about Rance humiliating and torturing her, even though he's not fond of the idea.
  • Promoted to Playable: In Rance Quest.
  • Starter Villain: Along with Hassam Crown, she is the first antagonist directly opposing Ice Flame, while their fathers mostly act behind the scenes.

Dolhan Cricket

The personal servant of Emi, who happens to be one of the last surviving members of the Insect Users tribe. He lost any sense of self due to the harsh abuse he suffers from his master, blindly following every of her commands.

Tropes exhibited by Dolhan include:
  • Deadly Upgrade: After absorbing the large number of 11 Insects (4 being the average number for an Insect User), his abilities bordered on Master of All but he quickly died due to the Insects destroying his body.
  • Gonk: He's not easy in the eyes, and after his Deadly Upgrade it became worse.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Much more powerful and resilient than his master Emi, yet obeying all of her orders.
  • Last of His Kind: He's the last male Insect User alive (barring Galtia, who became a Fiend) after their near extermination before the events of Rance VI.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Years of abuse from his master prevent him from thinking too much when she gives him orders. The only instance of him disobeying her orders comes after she orders him to rape Caloria Cricket, which he refused out of kinship for her.
  • Power Incontinence: Gathering too much Insects in his body ended up killing him due to being unable to control them.

Zulki Crown

The Secretary of Finance and a friend of Radon Alphorne. He uses his position in a government as a means to take more money from 2nd Class citizens, and more often than not capture women abuse and torture them.

Tropes exhibited by Zulki include:
  • Asshole Victim: Gets killed by the much more extremist Pentagon, but no one cares about his death afterwards.
  • Fate Worse than Death: Not long after his death, he wandered alone as zombie, unable to die until the Priestess Sel finishes him for good.

  • Torture Technician: His main hobby besides of being the Secretary of Finance.

Hassam Crown

The son of Zulki and the fiance of Emi. He's the first villain met by Rance in Rance VI, under the guise of Saberknight who terrorizes 2nd Class Citizens. After getting defeated, he's put into jail by "Punisher Mito".

Tropes exhibited by Hassam include:

Zeth Army

Four Lords

Four mages selected by skill (instead of bloodline like other positions in the government or nobility), who are tasked to guard the Four Towers circling the Zethan Capital. They are considered the best mages of the country and have significant power, only outshined by the King himself. After the events of Rance VI, Papaya Server and Nagi su Ragarl were replaced by Urza Pranaice and Chochoman Public.

Magic the Gandhi

See her entry in Zeth Royalty above.

Chizuko Yamada

One of the Four Lords of Zeth and its highest politician. Because the King spends most of his time outside the castle as a vigilante and shoves all of his work to her, she is considered the de facto true ruler of Zeth. Despite everything, she dearly loves him and follows his will to end the segregation between the citizens of Zeth. After the events of Rance VI, she's still in charge of the country, due to Rance and King Gandhi having fled once more, and later reappears in Rance X as one of the main commanders of Zeth. She has the unique talent of Informatio Magic, which allows her to emulate informatic systems and technology, notably information on every Magitek device scattered across the country.

Tropes exhibited by Chizuko include:

Nagi su Ragarl

One of the Four Lords of Zeth, not much is known about her. Preferring spending time training alone, she is revealed to be the daughter of Chenezali de Ragarl, a powerful mage of Zeth. She was trained by her father in order to kill Shizuka Masou, the daughter of his rival in love, meaning she was raised to kill her half-sister. She then began to lose her sanity over the years of harsh training and even torture to enhance her power at all costs.

Tropes exhibited by Nagi include:
  • Abusive Parents: Her father only cared about killing Shizuka, and didn't even consider his daughter as a person, only a tool to do his bidding no matter the cost.
  • Absurdly High Level Cap: Following their rebirth, both she and Shizuka end up inheriting Rance's trademark lack of level cap.*
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: Downplayed. Despite losing her memories of her past, she can sometimes remembers small bits of it, with one instance in Rance X where she asks Shizuka if she was mean in her past life.
  • Arch Enemy: Following VI, she only lives to make Shizuka's life a living hell.
  • Assist Character: If she is recruited in Rance X, she can appear when using Shizuka's 1 AP magical buff, where she will deal damage every turn.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: She was one of the Four Lords, who are chosen solely by talent. Furthermore, she is the only one of the Four Lords to successfully defend her tower from the terrorists attacks and the Monster Army.
  • Ax-Crazy: While she is able to maintain a Mask of Sanity most of the time, when she finally meets Shizuka, she gets to show how broken she really is.
  • Birds of a Feather: She easily befriends Reset as both of them are happy go-lucky children.
  • Body Horror: She starts fusing her body with chimerae in order to gain strength following Rance VI. By the time of Rance IX, she is nearly half Chimera, half Human.
  • Broken Bird: Once her father learned his crush had another child with his rival Souzou Masou, he began to train his daughter in order to kill his rival's child, at the slight cost of her sanity.
  • Break the Cutie: Her childhood was a long string of this.
  • Casting a Shadow: She is able to use Black Destruction Beam.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Shizuka's Abel.
  • Cheerful Child: Following her rebirth, there is no trace of the broken sadist she was before.
  • Child by Rape: How she was born in the first place.
  • Childhood Friends: With Reset Kalar.
  • Children Are Innocent: She's no longer the insane mage obsessed by revenge in Rance IX, and after losing her memories, becomes a Cheerful Child who spends her time with other children.
  • Cycle of Revenge: Shizuka's father was killed by Ragarl. Ragarl was killed by Shizuka (or so she thinks) so she sets out to make Shizuka suffer.
  • Cool Big Sis: To the El Party. Just like Shizuka, she is technically one of their siblings.
  • Died in Your Arms Tonight: Her body finally broke down near the end of Rance IX and she ends up dying in Shizuka's arms. Shizuka decides otherwise and uses a dangerous spell to save her life, but it ends out turning them into children.
  • Duel Boss: With Shizuka in VI, and it's implied Shizuka lost because she didn't want to hurt her last living relative after knowing the tragic circumstances of her birth.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Foolish to Shizuka's Responsible following their rebirth.
  • Fountain of Youth: She is turned back into a child in Rance IX.
  • Goal in Life: Killing Shizuka to please her father. However, she ended up killing him after he wanted to adopt Shizuka, since it would end her purpose in life.
  • Lady Not-Appearing-in-This-Game: Subverted. She appeared in the cover of Rance II despite not being in the game at all, but she ended up appearing for real in Rance VI.
  • Little Miss Badass: Even after her rebirth, she is still Level 43 with a Magic Lvl 2 Skill and as such, she is perfectly able to hold her own in battle.
  • Meido: She possesses the Maid level 1 Skill Level and she used it well when she became one of Kesselring's maids following her first Trauma-Induced Amnesia.
  • More Teeth Than the Osmond Family: After her rebirth, she end up having the same shark teeth than Rance and Reset. There is a reason.
  • Not So Different: To Shizuka, as both spent their lives yearning for revenge because of their loved ones...
  • Not So Similar: ...However, while Shizuka decided to look past her grudge and care about her last living relative, Nagi went further into madness because revenge was her sole purpose in life.
  • Older Than They Look: Just like Shizuka, she reverts to childhood in IX, making her older than she appears to be. Unlike Shizuka however, she behaves the age she looks.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child: As Shizuka revealed in Rance X, the spell she used to turn Nagi and her into children was possible because it used the life of her unborn child as fuel.
  • Raise Him Right This Time: After becoming a child, she lost most of her former memories, but this time her upbringing is bound to be much healthier than her past life, thanks to Shizuka and Reset Kalar.
  • Revenge: Her main motive, as taught by her father.
  • Revenge by Proxy: Downplayed. She rapes Rance in Rance IX to spite Shizuka, but since he mostly enjoyed it and Shizuka hates him, it didn't have any effect on them.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: In Rance X:Part 2. It contrast a lot with her former dress.
  • Schmuck Bait: When she was going to kill Shizuka in Rance VI, Patton went along with Rance's crazy plan and loudly tells Nagi she's actually her second sister. It actually works, so much that even after becoming a child and losing her memories in Rance IX, she remembers of Patton being related to her in some way.
  • She Is All Grown Up: In Part II, she regains the figure she had during Rance VI, all while teasing Reset.
  • Stripperiffic: To emphasize her lack of sanity, even worse in Rance IX.
  • Take Me Instead!: Following the first "fight" with Archfiend Rance, both she and Shizuka offered themselves to him in order to buy time for the El Party's escape.
  • Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Twice. The first time, she fell off a cliff during her training in the Monster Realm and she is taken by Kesselring as a maid until she recovers. Then, following her rebirth, she loses all of her memories, but it may be for the best.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Turning into a chimera hasn't done wonders for her sanity.

Papaya Server

One of the Four Lords of Zeth, and one of its main scientists regarding the Magitek technology. Some time before Rance VI, she gets possessed by a cursed book named the Nomicon, which greatly empowers her magic abilities, but corrupts her greatly. She is the daughter of Nelson Server, but her fast ascension into the higher ranks of the government and her great magical power and her corruption from the Nomicon caused him to disinherit her, feeling frustrated by their gap in power and influence. She was freed by Rance after the events of the game, and quit her functions out of regret for her past actions.

Chochoman Public

The successor of Nagi su Ragarl after the latter fled from the country. With Urza Pranaice, he joined the Four Lords as a non-mage by the recommendation of the King Gandhi. His main talent resides in politics and administration, instead of the battlefield like everyone else.

Tropes exhibited by Chochoman include:
  • Boring but Practical: The other Four Lords are two powerful mages and an skilled Magnetic Hero. He is simply good with administration, but it is a valuable skill for a recovering nation.

Four Generals

The main leaders of the Zeth Army, four generals who are capable of displaying enormous power. They are only deployed in major large-scale incidents, and are on par with the Four Lords in terms of power and abilities.

Saias Crown

A playboy and a charming man who is part of the Zeth Military, as the general of the Fire Army. Despite being of the noble house of Crown and having the possibility to live a life of leisure, he nonetheless chose to train himself in the military as a common soldier, because he believed one should be able to rose in the ranks through talent and not by bloodline. One year later, he quickly became one of the Four Generals and is a fervent supporter of King Gandhi. He's also planning to marry one day his fellow General Uspira Shintou, easier said than done for him.

Tropes exhibited by Saias include:
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: While he could have stopped the Green Squad from destroying Papaya's mana battery, he was forced to pull back to prevent Uspira from exhausting herself to death.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Alex.
  • Hidden Depths: A talented gardener.
  • Playing with Fire: He isn't the General of the Fire Army for nothing as he is one of the few humans on the continent to be able to use Zetton, one of the most powerful fire spells.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Uspira's Blue.
  • Those Two Guys: He is rarely seen without Uspira.
  • White Sheep: The two other members of the Crown family we saw in Rance VI, Hassan and Zulki are nobles who abuse their powers and respectively a Serial Killer and a torturer.
  • Will They or Won't They?: With Uspira.

Uspira Shintou

Once a former magic researcher, Uspira lost all of her family and her husband, and joined the military out of desperation. She unexpectedly became noticed as one of the best mages of the country and was promoted to General of the Ice Army as a result. She's often seen alongside fellow General Saias Crown, who plans to marry her. During the events of Rance VI, she gets injured by the Monster Army and doesn't participate in the war. Some time afterwards, Saias proposed to her, but gently rejected him, saying she "will wait for Alex to marry himself", though their relationship remains that of an old couple.

Tropes exhibited by Uspira include:

Alex Valse

The youngest of the Four Generals and the fiance of Zeth's princess Magic. Like Saias, he was also born in a wealthy family amongst the nobles of Zeth, but he ended up growing as a kindhearted man. His great talent in magical prowess made him somewhat famous in the country, and he ended up being Magic's private tutor, and the two began dating several months later. Thanks to his family connections and his proficiency in Light Magic, he was promoted to General of the Light Army at the young age of 18, and was even rumored to be the next King in line. However, his lack of confidence prevents him to be more honest with his feelings. It ends up biting him back during the events of Rance VI, when Magic ends her engagement to him. After helping in the operation to save the country from destruction, he duels Rance to take Magic back but is defeated. Vowing to become stronger, he was suddenly taken aback by Magic's friend Eropicha approaches, and eventually began dating as a result. As of Rance X, it's revealed they are engaged and plan to marry as soon as the Second Fiend War is over.

Tropes exhibited by Alex include:
  • Disposable Fiancé: Ends up on the receiving end by Magic after her accident with Rance.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: If Medusa isn't beaten early in Rance X, he is slaughtered by Kayblis when he frees Camilla from her prison in Zeth.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: With Saias.
  • Light'Em Up: A master of Light Magic, surpassing even Shizuka in terms of power (and having a Level Cap of 80), who is already one of the best mages.
  • Nice Guy: He is too nice for his own good, and it's the main reason Gandhi thinks he would be a bad king. He is almost tricked by Sieg during the operation for the Maginot Line because of this.
  • Signature Move: Downplayed, he's one of the few mages able to use the White Destruction Beam.
  • Teen Genius: Became the Light General at 18.
  • The One That Got Away: Considers Magic to be this to the point of thinking about her in his last moments.

Kabachahn the Lightning

A old veteran from the Zeth military, who has served his country for decades. He's a legendary figure for those in Zeth, namely for his trememdous power in times of war, and being one of wisest mentors one can ever hope to have. Amongst the Four Generals, he leads the Lightning Army and acts as a father figure for the other three Generals.

Zeth Citizens

Ice Flame

The main rebel group Rance joins at the beginning of the game. Its leader is Urza Pranaice, a former Pentagon member, and Daniel Safety, a doctor and former brawler who takes care of her. While initially very weak, the group began to grow stronger since the arrival of Rance and gained influence.

Urza Pranaice

The main heroine of Rance VI and leader of the rebel group Ice Flame. Some time before the events of the game, she had a more active role in the struggle against the nobles of Zeth, but tragedy struck her family, leaving her orphaned. Afterwards, she lost her will to live, causing her to be unable to walk. But everything changed for her once a new recruit known as Rance joined her group.

Tropes exhibited by Urza include:
  • Action Girl: Despite not being able to use Magic Arts, she makes it up by having a lot of useful abilities and is a powerful tactician, explaining why she was chosen by Gandhi to be one of the Four Lords at the end of Rance VI.
  • Badass Decay: Averted. Even after she spends more than a year in a wheelchair without fighting, she retains a high level of 40.
  • Big Damn Heroes: When Maria and Sanakia are about to be overwhelmed by the Monsters attacking the Headquarters, she slays them effortlessly.
  • Broken Bird: During Rance VI, she is a shell of her former self but she grows out of it by the time of the Collapse of Zeth.
  • The Cavalry: During Sengoku Rance, she is the second commander send by Zeth to Rance's demands.

  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: In the ending Truth of God of Rance X, she faces Arios and try to talk him out of killing Miki. She fails.
  • It's All My Fault: She blames herself for the death of her family and it's the reason she is afraid to make choices and fight for her beliefs. However, during the attack of Ice Flame by the Monster Army, Daniel told her the truth about his father's role in the incident, prompting her to walk again and fight once more.
  • Jack-of-All-Trades: One didn't expect her to have several useful combat skills, such as Bow Combat, Sword Combat and Strategy, along with Government.
  • The Lancer: As a part of the Four Lords, she is this to Chizuko, though it depends of circumstances as she is the one to accompany Magic to the heads of states reunion at the beginning of Rance X.
  • Magnetic Hero: Even at her lowest point, she continues to be a figure of inspiration for the Ice Thawers. Aurora acknowledged this and cut connections between her and them in order to prevent them from stopping the chaos.
  • Optional Party Member: She is one of the optional characters sent to Rance in Sengoku Rance if the latter asks for reinforcements from Zeth.

  • Sword and Gun: Just replace Gun by Crossbow.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Played with. When she could walk, she was already a full-fledged Action Girl until the death of her family, preventing her from walking again. In the second half of Rance VI, after some pushing from a dying Daniel, she began to walk and fight once again, showing her former skills.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: Downplayed considering she was able to walk but lacked the will to do so.
  • We Used to Be Friends: By the time of Rance X, she is saddenned by Arios's behaviour, far different from the man she used to know during his stay in Pentagon.
  • Wheelchair Woobie: It's hard not to feel bad for her, knowing her condition and later the truth behind her family's death.

Daniel Safety

A doctor who takes care of Urza after her accident, and also an important Ice Flame member. Very doubtful about Rance from the start, he nonetheless acknowledges his strength but often keep him in watch due to his behavior. His son Abert is also part of the Ice Flame Group. He's very knowledgeable of Zeth and most of their structure is revealed through him in Rance VI. In reality, he's actually the son of Abert, who's unable to age due to his Apostle status. His goal is to eventually find a cure for his father, knowing full well his true personality, but keeps helping Urza and the Ice Flame group in their struggle for the 2nd Class Citizens of Zeth.

Tropes exhibited by Daniel include:
  • And Then What?: Discussed with Shizuka, once he learned about her goal of killing Ragarl for revenge, but he doesn't manage to talk her out of it.
  • Awful Truth: Naturally, he freaked out upon learning the true nature of his father and his role in causing the death of the Pranaice Family as part of his "trial". However, he still loves his father and managed to convince him to stay in Ice Flame alongside Urza even after she failed in his eyes.
  • Bald of Awesome: He's now bald due to his old age, but is capable of kicking ass nonetheless.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: While Daniel is quite tolerant of Rance's antics and immature behavior, he can prove to be a very dangerous fighter in times of need.
  • Child by Rape: It is heavily implied that his mother was driven insane by the trials of his father, who then died shortly after his birth.
  • Died Standing Up: He dies during the attack of the Ice Flame headquarters during the Collapse of Zeth, but not before killing several dozens of monsters on his own.

  • Papa Wolf: Do not cause harm to Urza in his presence.
  • Schmuck Bait: He tricked Rance into learning the history of Zeth with naming his courses as "Schoolgirl Underwear Lessons".

One of the first three recruits of Ice Flame Rance gets to see in Rance VI. A petite girl with a cheerful and cute demeanor who sometimes lapses into menacing glares and threats whenever someone bothers her too much. Her main weapon is a customized bow, but her proficiency of Bow Combat is self-educated, making her not very useful on combat.

Kimchi Drive

The head of an orphanage located in the headquarters of Ice Flame. A tender and motherly person at heart, she took a lot of war orphans under her wing, due to her own history of being an orphan herself. She also serves as a "comfort woman" to the soldiers of Ice Flame, which causes her to be indifferent towards romantic relationships in general.

  • Facial Markings: She has a diamond-like red marking on her forehead, resembling those of the Kalar.

  • Undying Loyalty: No matter what happened to Ice Flame, she won't leave Urza.

Karma Atranger

One of the eldest orphans of Ice Flame, and acts as an older sister to them. She developped a crush on Rance during his time at Zeth, but he rejected her due to her young age. After the disbanding of Ice Flame, she came back as a playable character in Rance Quest.

Alfra Ray

A very young girl, also part of the orphans of Ice Flame, who's easily frightened by strangers, especially older men like Rance. She was formerly living in the Lolita House, a child prostitution center masquerading as an orphanage for 2nd Class citizens' children. After learning of her history, Rance destroyed the center entirely and rescued all of the children, telling Alfra everything was over and that she wouldn't have to be afraid any more.

Pentagon

A rebel group whose objective is to improve the rights of non-magic users in the country. At the start, the group was very moderate and was mainly doing public protests and community service work, but a new, more radical leader took over and made it the terrorist group known in the events of Rance VI. The more moderate members broke away from the group to form Ice Flame. Their main goal is to take control of the country for non-mages, even if it has to be by force.

During the events of the game, they merge with Ice Flame and began sabotage operations to destroy the mana batteries, main source of energy for the country, in order to seize the capital. However, they are Out-Gambitted by Pentagon member Pompadour, who is actually the Apostle Aurora and has beennworking for the Monster Army from the beginning. Afterwards, Pentagon gets disbanded and most of their members died or got imprisoned shortly after.

Nelson Server

The leader of Pentagon, and former friend of the Ice Flame leaders. He's the one responsible for turning Pentagon into the terrorist group known in the events of Rance VI. Following some attempts for a coup d'etat, he convinces Rance to join forces to destroy the mana batteries of the country to throw the country into chaos.

After the Monster Invasion that followed, he disbanded the group and wandered for some time, not knowing what to do with his life. He later reappears in Rance X.

Elizabeth Lacock

A young woman who joined Pentagon thanks to the speeches of Nelson Server. With her Conversation skills, she quickly rose in the ranks to be the second in command of the group. During the fall of Pentagon, she quickly built "Neo Pentagon" to perpetuate Nelson's will. However, it was destroyed once more, and was later raped by her own subordinates. After that, her mind broke, leaving her with a childlike behaviour.

Foot Rot

A former mercenary from the Free Cities who joined Pentagon after seeing the poor treatment of 2nd Class Citizens. He was also good friends with the former members who founded Ice Flame, and even keeps sending funds to Kimchi, even though they were in a different group. During the attack of the Pentagon Base by Rance, he died after a fierce fight against him.

Kinggeorge Violae

Despite being born in a noble house of Zeth, Kinggeorge was slowly disowned by his own family for having a low intelligence and a lack of Magic ability, forcing him to be a 2nd Class Citizen. After being recruited by Pentagon, he was mostly doing riot operations until he was stopped by Ice Flame, and later arrested by Alex Valse. However, due to blind rage and the Light General words questioning Nelson's ideal, he forced Alex to kill him in self-defense.

Rodney Rodney

A chemist who also joined Pentagon after its descent into terrorism. His great talent for creating several mixtures and gases suggests he was formerly from a 1st Class Citizen family, but also failed to pass the exam, causing him to be degraded as 2nd Class. During the assault on the Pentagon Base, he died in action after accidentally inhaling his own laughing gas in an attempt to trap Ice Flame.

Pompadour

See her entry in Apostles.

Rizna Lanfbitt

Rizna was a former citizen of Zeth who disappeared mysteriously roughly 30 years before the start of the series, and was the childhood friend of King Gandhi. She's first seen in Rance 5D, trapped in another dimension called "Genbu's Castle", actually one of the Apostles of Xavier. During those times, she lived a harsh life of being used and abused by many men also trapped with her, until she met the Hanny Kagekatsu who took care of her. After being freed from the dimension by Rance, she later helped Ice Flame alongside him and after the events of Rance VI, lives in the royal palace under the protection of King Gandhi.

Tropes exhibited by Rizna include:
  • The Aloner: The Genbu Castle rules enforce this. As such, she wasn't able to escape it and several people she met all ended up betraying her and leaving her alone again. See Closed Circle for details.
  • Anti-Magic: She was pretty resistant before but after receiving the Hanny's racial skill, she can't be harmed by magic anymore. Her great resistance to magic came from Gandhi in his youth, who often bullied Rizna with his famous punches which progressively made her immune.
  • Anti-Villain: After being turned into a Fiend in Part II.While she don't want to oppose humanity, she can't resist the control of the Archfiend.
  • And I Must Scream: She was trapped for 30 years in the Genbu Castle, being regularly abused and betrayed by the men she encounters.
  • Bad Liar: Her trusting nature makes her bad at lying and she requires Kagekatsu's advice to be effective.
  • The Beastmaster: Surprisingly gets along with Hannies and is able to command them.
  • Becoming the Mask: In Rance 5D, where she pretends to be in love with Rance in order to manipulate him. After being freed of the Genbu Castle, she develops genuine feelings for him.
  • Big Breasts, Big Deal: Type Two. Responsible for much of her misfortune due to easily attracting men when she was trapped.
  • Blade on a Stick: Possess a Spear Skill Level 1.
  • Character Title: She is the titular Lonely Girl of Rance 5D.
  • Childhood Friends: With King Gandhi.
  • Closed Circle: The Genbu Castle, where she was trapped, requires having at least one human in its walls to have the exit open, making it impossible to escape unless the prisoner switches with another one.
  • Cool Hat: Wears one along with her kimono.
  • Covert Pervert: Played for Drama. One of the previous men she met forced her to be his sex slave, and "trained" her body to be easily aroused. Years later, she still has relapses from time to time and needs someone to calm her.
  • Cuteness Equals Forgiveness: Part of the reason Rance forgives her.
  • Driving Question: Who trapped Rizna in the Genbu Castle in the first place? Rance VI reveals it was the work of her former magic teacher Abert Safety, as part of his search for the "unflinching woman" of his memory.
  • Dude Magnet: Her beauty and rather large chest doesn't help either.
  • Easily Forgiven: Subverted. Sill forgives her rather easily due to having learned the circumstances of her imprisonment, and later Rance when she reveals her past to him. Even then she couldn't forgive herself for trapping Sill in her place.
  • Emergency Transformation: Following her torture by Medusa, she is physically and mentally broken by the experience, and as she shows no signs of recovering after a year, Rance turns her into a Fiend in order to heal her.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her gullible and too trusting nature.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her manipulative and untrusting behavior at the beginning of Rance 5D is the result of thirty years of abuse from men who gained her trust and prolonged isolation, unable to escape, not helped by an aborted pregnancy. She was saved from madness by the Puchi Hanny Kagekatsu, who became her first and only friend in the castle, and advisor when meeting (and using) Rance.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Played for Drama. She is often deceived by people and has been betrayed by several men who came before Rance, keeping her trapped in the Genbu Castle. Only Kagekatsu stayed with her and the two have a relationship of mutual trust. Her ability to judge people is so bad that she believed Rance's smooth talk until Kagekatsu warned her about his wicked nature.
  • Like Brother and Sister: Her relationship with Gandhi as a whole.
  • Mage Killer: Due to being able to No-Sell magic, she is effective at neutralizing mages.
  • Mage Knight: Possess both a Magic and Spear Skill Level 1, the latter being helped by Kagekatsu's knowledge.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Despite having the possibility of exiting the dimension she's trapped in, she cannot bring herself to do it out of guilt upon having sacrificed the innocent Sill for her freedom, and attempted to kill herself until she was stopped by Rance.
  • Older Than They Look: Looks 20 years old, but she is older than Gandhi.
  • Put on a Bus: Thirty years before the beginning of the series, up until Rance 5D.
  • Pro-Human Transhuman: Despite becoming a Fiend, she still supports humanity when she is able to do so.
  • This Is Unforgivable!: When she was still living in Zeth, the Insect Users were still alive. She is horrified when she learns of their genocide.
  • Trapped in Another World: During Rance 5D, until her liberation by Rance and Sill.

Eropicha Nyanko

One of the closest friends of Magic, whom she often spends time with during their studies. She is a rather shady woman with a strange demeanor, as pointed out by Magic, who suspects her to be plotting something against her. During the events of Rance VI, her actions subtly influence Magic, notably after her incident with Rance. Since then, she became more and more of a confidant to Magic, asking for advice regarding romance and sexuality. It later turns out Magic was right regarding a secret agenda, but not for the reasons she suspected: Eropicha ends up dating her former fiancé, Light General Alex Valse.

As of Rance X, she appears as a playable character, currently engaged with Alex.

Tropes exhibited by Eropicha include:
  • Big Beautiful Woman: Despite being plump, Rance acknowledges her as beautiful and her numerous experiences with men implies this.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Subverted due to Magic being aware of some sort of hidden agenda from her, though she effectively took Alex from her at the end. Further seen in Rance X where it's shown they are still friends despite it.
  • The Chessmaster: Played for laughs. Most of her suspicious demeanor and strange advice to Magic were part of her plot to get Alex as her lover.
  • Eyes Always Shut: She's never seen opening her eyes once in Rance VI.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Always seen with a smile, no matter how dire the situation. The sole exception happens in Rance X after King Gandhi's death.
  • Really Gets Around: She confesses to having slept with multiple men in the past, to the horror of Magic.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Despite having a strange Verbal Tic implying some sort of laziness for her, she is actually quite intelligent, to the point she's seen helping Magic in her homework by giving away answers. She also has a Level 1 Conversation Skill, allowing her to deceive people with words.
  • Verbal Tic: She has a tendency to lengthen vowels whenever she taaaaaaaaaaaalks.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Pink in her case.

Anise Sawatari

The assistant of Chizuko Yamada, one of the Four Lords of Zeth. She is notable for being one of the strongest Human Mages of the entire Continent, easily surpassing the most powerful mages, even King Gandhi himself. However, it came at a price: She is infamous for being utterly clumsy and stupid, to the point she killed allies as much as enemies in battle, earning her the nickname of "Ally-Killer Anise". As a consequence, she is mostly kept in check by her master Chizuko and is stricly forbidden from intervening in country affairs, even though she sometimes escapes her surveillance.

During the events of Rance VI, she's deployed by Radon Alphorne to put a stop to Ice Flame actions, led by Rance. It ends in failure and her daughter Emi was injured as a result, inadvertently causing the fall of the country days later. Finally, she's convinced by the newly-transformed Fiend Abert to be his Lesser Apostle, and was freed after his defeat.

She appears in Rance X, first possessed by the Fiend RedEye, and joins the Human Alliance after its defeat.

Tropes exhibited by Anise include:
  • Awesome but Impractical: Regarding her military skills as a whole. She has god-like magic power but is too stupid to make good use of it.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: An hopeless klutz and one of the most powerful mages in the Continent.
  • Bumbling Sidekick: To Chizuko.
  • The Chew Toy: Nothing good ever happens for her due to her sheer incompetence and her mistreatment by others.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: In Kichikuou Rance, she is one of the candidates for the Flash, a Weapon of Mass Destruction requiring a living Magic User of great power to sacrifice.
  • Dope Slap: She often gets them from Chizuko, especially in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Downplayed. When she briefly becomes Abert's Lesser Apostle during the True Final Boss of Rance VI, she is definitely the biggest threat of the fight. Inverted the rest of the time.
  • The Millstone: Despite her best efforts to help Chizuko, she mostly cause her trouble.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: She actually destroys the mana battery she was supposed to protect!
  • The Pollyanna: Despite being The Chew Toy, she never loses her optimism.
  • Power Incontinence: Despite her great power, she doesn't have much control over it, and actually injures allies and enemies alike. Downplayed in Rance X where she controls it good enough to be deployed on the battlefield.
  • Red Baron: Ally-Killer Anise.
  • Took a Level in Badass: In Rance X, she has improved her control over magic and can actually be deployed on the battlefield.
  • Unskilled but Strong: One of the strongest mages in history, her clumsiness hinders much of her potential.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To the Fiend Abert, who manipulated her to be his Lesser Apostle until his defeat in Rance VI, and the Fiend RedEye who's possessing her in the beginning of Rance X.
  • World's Strongest Man: Regarding her Magic Skill Level of 3, she is considered one of the best Human Mages of the continent.

Martina Curry

The most famous chief in the country, so much that her restaurant, "Sakura & Food", has customers from the entire Continent. She first appears in Rance VI as her restaurant is attacked by the Monster Army and later saved by Ice Flame. Afterwards, she reappears in Rance X, having befriended the Fiend Galtia thanks to her great cooking skills.

Tropes exhibited by Martina include:
  • Supreme Chef: The most reknowned in the Continent, so much that she can convince the Fiend Galtia to change sides in Kichikuou Rance.

Miracle Tou

A (in)famous individual known as the "Dark Witch", who befriended Patton Misnarge during a revolt in Zeth led by mages. She harbors tremendous magical powers on par with Anise Sawatari, able to create and copy spells on a whim, the most notable being her ability to travel between dimensions. She has also a very prideful personality, spends her time mocking others and like to boast about her powers on top of using an archaic speaking style, but she's actually a good person despite claiming otherwise.

Tropes exhibited by Miracle include:
  • Dimensional Traveller: She developed magic that lets her travel to other realities, though she wasn't the first to do so (Archfiend Gai, at the very least, beat her to that punch).
  • Dream Team: She's put together a theoretical one of the most skilled warriors in the world, which she calls her Twelve Knights. If she ever managed to get this group together, she believes she could easily take over the world.
  • Red String of Fate: She's one of Rance's fated women, and does have a daughter by him in Rance X.

Mysteria Tou

Miracle's grandmother, and one of the most prominent mages in the world. She is revealed to have taught several prominent mages across the series.

Tropes exhibited by Mysteria include:
  • The Archmage: Despite only possessing a Level 2 magic skill, her experience and breadth of knowledge make her, in many ways, far more effective than a Level 3 magic user.
  • Master Apprentice Chain: She taught both Rasghiss and Souzou Masou, both of whom in turn taught Shizuka. Shizuka also studied Mysteria's work to implement her Time Travel magic in Rance 02.
  • Super Breeding Program: Following her ten pupils failing to impress her enough to choose a successor from among them, she instead chose to match her son with a suitable woman to bring forth an immensely powerful mage. Miracle Tou is the result of that effort.
