Rance/Characters/Helman

Helman was one of the earliest nations made by the newly reformed humanity, after the fall of the Holy Magic Sect in the GI Era. It was founded when the warrior Zanageth Helman, once a lone fighter, challenged the leaders of several small provinces in 1-on-1 contests, betting their respective territories. After 62 victorious battles, the provinces merged to form the Helman Republic with Zanageth Helman as the Emperor. After his death, severals rifts in the alliance began to open. First, several provinces toward the east declared independance from Helman under the banner of the hero Gross Leazas, future founder of the Kingdom of Leazas, and ended up being its long-standing enemy in military conflicts.

There was also a bunch of provinces in southern Helman and west of Leazas, that wanted to escape the grasp of the Republic and waged war against Helman, Leazas and even the Monster Army. A young and talented mage named Parsley Rig Zeth managed to gather a group large enough to battle, and, aided by the Apostle Lucy Jiuletta and an excavated Warlord, won the war after two years of fighting, founded the Magic Kingdom of Zeth, intended to be a refuge for the persecuted mages all over the world after the Holy Magic Sect domination.

In the LP Era, Helman's Prince Patton Misnarge, whose legitimacy began to crumble due to the manipulations of Empress Dowager Pamela Helman and Prime Minister Stessel Romanov, decided to launch an all-out attack on the Kingdom of Leazas, allied with the Fiends Noce (also being his advisor), Ithere and Satella, making it the 7th Helman-Leazas War in history, creating the events of Rance 03. His successful invasion was ultimately short-lived, as the warrior Rance repelled it with the aid of the Leazas Army, destroying his reputation once and for all and forcing him to be a wanderer, being deemed dead by the Prime Minister as a result.

After the disappearance of Patton Misnarge, the daughter of Pamela, Sheila Helman, was enthroned as the Empress of Helman, making it the Helman Empire, but is secretly manipulated by the Prime Minister Stessel behind the scenes. To get rid of him, Patton and some of his loyalists began forming an army that would be large enough to overthrow Stessel and his corrupt regime. The full extent of this revolution is depicted during the events of Rance IX.

Helman Government

Helman Royal Family

Patton Misnarge

The former prince of Helman. After his failed invasion of Leazas, he was declared dead by his country and was forced into exile. However his exile allowed him to grow into a better person who, along with his friends Hunty Kalar, Hubert Lipton, and Freak Paraffin, will work together to overthrow the corrupt government of Helman, but before they can start the revolution, he needs to travel and train throughout the Continent in order to grow as a fighter and person. In a twist of fate, when his journey brought him to Zeth he would meet and fight with the man who destroyed his earlier aspirations and would later on recruit him in the Helman Revolution.

Tropes exhibited by Patton include:
  • Ascended Extra: In Rance III, he was little more than a background fixture, and was originally intended to be killed off with little fanfare. Then some background notes inspired TADA to quickly rewrite the story so that he survived, and Patton's role would gradually increase until he became firmly part of the main cast.
  • Badass Beard: He grows one in Rance X: Part 2.
  • Bare-Fisted Monk: He's one of the most powerful unarmed fighters of the world.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: In Rance III/Rance 03.
  • Big Damn Heroes: In Rance X, when the Human Alliance are about to suffer another defeat against Toppos-RedEye, he, along with Hunty and the restored Wargod Zeta, appears to reinforce the party.
  • The Big Guy: He is this in both looks and personality.
  • Break the Haughty: The entirety of Rance 3/Rance 03 was this for him. He considers this a good thing since his loss causes him to realize his selfishness and that he needs to change himself into a better man instead of the arrogant person he before.
  • Character Development: And how! Over the course of the series, he goes from a selfish asshole to one of the most selfless and heroic characters in the entire series.
  • Determinator: Post Character Development and in his own words: "Well, quitting’s never been a part of my vocabulary!"
  • Deuteragonist: Of Rance IX.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: He became this with Rance.
  • Gentle Giant: He's over 2 meters tall like any other Helmanian, but he's a very nice and selfless guy to his allies.
  • Heel Face Turn: From the Big Bad of Rance 3/Rance 03 to one of Rance's greatest allies.
  • Hero of Another Story: His story of reclaiming Helman and return it to it's former glory is a background story that takes place from Rance 3/Rance 03 through Rance Quest Magnum, before it takes center stage in Rance IX.
  • Hunk: As expected of a Helmanian. Also the reason Rance didn't try to kill him on sight was because of him being this trope and as such, deemed ugly and non-threatening as a man.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Hunty, a Dragon Kalar.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Downplayed when he hears, from Rance himself no less, that Rance intends to make his sister Sheila into one if his women. Patton states that if Sheila doesn't like him, he would be willing to fight against him, but if things would work out between them, he'd allow it but would would still feel uncomfortable since she's still his sister. Thankfully when they properly reunited, Sheila already likes Rance and no fight breaks out between them.
  • Official Couple: With Hunty by the end of IX.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Averted. Despite Sheila being his direct competition for the throne, she and Patton are very close.
  • Took a Level in Badass: He went from a selfish prince who only lets other do the work for him to a man who fights in the front lines to protect his home and allies.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He also became a kinder person instead of the obnoxious arrogant person he was before.
  • The Unfought: He was this in Rance III/Rance 03, while he was the one who supposedly took charge in overtaking Leazas, he was never confronted directly. He is however fightable in Rance VI, but as sparring match instead of an antagonist.
  • Wife Husbandry: Gender inverted. He ultimately hooks up with Hunty who has been one of his caretakers since childhood.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: He has blue hair, which is a trait found in the royal family.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Noce does this to him at the end of Rance 03, he only survives it thanks to Hunty.

Paelina Misnarge

One of the previous emperor of Helman's concubines, and the mother of Patton. She was good friends with Hunty Kalar, but was assassinated by agents of Stessel.

Tropes exhibited by Paelina include:
  • Defector From Decadence: One of the only members of Helman's court who seemed to be a genuinely nice person.
  • Posthumous Character: She already died many years before the story began.
  • Spanner in the Works: Gave birth to the prince Patton shortly before her assassination, who would grow up to be the leader of the Helmanian Revolution.

Sheila Helman

The current empress of Helman, but she doesn't hold any true power since the government below her manages everything (badly), and such she's only the figurehead of Helman. She's a nice and compassionate girl who cares about her citizens and hates her inability to do anything about Helman's current situation despite being its empress. After hearing Stessel's plan to dominate the world with a box that can activate a terrifying weapon, she decides to steal the box and run away to get help from her older brother Patton. In her escape she disguised herself as "Russian Kalette" with help from her maid Peruelé who also serves as her body double to ensure they don't know of her absence, but ended up tricked by her and became captured by slave traders. She wound up rescued by Rance, but still ended up becoming his slave after a misunderstanding (on her part). This allowed her to meet her older brother, but she can't reveal her identity, because she's afraid that Rance (who according to Patton is needed for the revolution to succeed) and Patton would fight since she became the former's slave.

Tropes exhibited by Sheila include:
  • Chekhov's Skill: As a result of being Stessel's daughter, she is one of the few capable of controlling the Holy Magic Sect remnants.
  • Dramatic Irony: No one except for the audience knows that "Russian Kalette" is actually Sheila Helman.
  • Good Parents: She is this towards her daughter Lelikov.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: She's very good at aiming thanks to her Throwing Lv1 skill.
  • Made a Slave: Her maid, Peruelé Kalette tricked her into becoming one by giving her the locations of slave traders who then captured her. She along with the other slaves were later freed by Rance and his party, but because she thought he would hurt the other girls instead of freeing them (which he actually was planning to do), he ended up tricking her in becoming his slave after seeing how beautiful she is.
  • The Medic: She has a Divine Magic Lv1 skill which allows her to cast healing magic.
  • Nice Girl: A very gentle and kind girl who cares about her country and hates her inability to improve its current conditions.
  • Pregnant Badass: It's implied she was pregnant with Rance's child in the last months of the 2nd Fiend War.
  • President for Life: Despite the fact that Helman changed from an empire to a republic, she's still the president of Helman in Rance X: Part 2, 15 years after the events of Rance X. If counting her ascension as president in Rance IX, that means she's held the office for 17 years.
  • Puppet Queen: She was this as the empress, but not as its current minister.
  • Red String of Fate: She is one of Rance's fated girls and this could be the reason why they met in such coincidental circumstances.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Towards Sill in Rance IX, since she was still frozen at the time such as that they are both mages that support Rance in combat who somehow became his slaves, and are nice girls in contrast with his brutish personality.
  • The Watson: Because Helman never experienced any invasion from fiends unlike Leazas and Zeth, she ends up being this in Rance X.

Pamela Helman

Mother of Sheila and wife of the previous emperor. In reality, she is actually Stessel Romanov's lover and is conspiring with him to rule Helman.

Tropes exhibited by Pamela include:
  • God Save Us From the Queen: She's technically the Empress Dowager and is in theory subordinate to her daughter, but "queen" is pretty close.
  • Your Cheating Heart: It's eventually revealed that Sheila is in fact Stessel's daughter, not the emperor's. This is yet another reason she was desperate to get Patton out of the way, since he is actually the only legitimate heir.

Stessel Romanov

Chancellor of the Helman Empire. At least, in name. In practice he is the ruler of the nation using Sheila Helman as a puppet ruler. Under his rule, Helman has steadily declined into corruption and stagnation, reducing the nation to a fraction of its former glory.

Tropes exhibited by Stessel include:
  • Big Bad: He's the primary villain of Rance IX, after having been in the background for multiple games.
  • Bigger Bad: Though he isn't named, he's the real driving force behind the plots of both Rance 03 and Rance IV.
  • Evil Chancellor: Rules the empire through a puppet and is planning to rule all of humanity through fear. He even cooperates with Fiends to achieve his ends, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Fiend himself.
  • Fate Worse Than Death: His fate in Kichikuou Rance. After losing Helman to Leazas, he manages to escape with its national treasure to the Monster Realm, but he gets caught by the Fiend Warg, who traps him in unending nightmares.
  • Narcissist: He loves nothing in the world but himself. Comes full circle with his daughter Sheila, whom he considers as his only love, being a part of him.
  • Non-Action Big Bad: He's responsible for all of the problems happening in Helman, but is quite weak as a combatant, so he mostly relies on the Warlord Bastet as his bodyguard.
  • Shout-Out: His name, along with his status as a Prime Minister who climbed through the ranks thanks his relation with an empress, makes him quite similar to Grigori Rasputin.
  • The Unfought: Despite being the man responsible for the corruption that plagued Helman, he was never fought directly and was eventually killed by Minerva, both in Kichikuou Rance and Rance IX.
  • Villainous Incest: He holds nothing but disdain for his wife Pamela, since he only has views on Sheila.

The Council of Eight

Hunty Kalar

Freak Paraffin

See his entry in Patton's Group.

Kechak Bangor

Supreme Commander of Helman's military. He is actually totally incompetent and only got the job because he's related to Stessel.

Tropes exhibited by Kechak include:
  • General Failure: He makes numerous rookie mistakes that let his enemies easily outmaneuver him.
  • Nepotism: His relation to Stessel is the only reason he's risen as far as he has.

Bitch Golch

An unpleasant and snide man who makes an appearance as the main antagonist of Rance IV. An extremely arrogant, selfish, and sadistic man, he attempted to activate and control Wargod Upsilon as a weapon for Helman.

Tropes exhibited by Bitch include:
  • Attempted Rape: He tries to rape Shizuka when she's captured by his group, but this is a step too far for Hubert, who knocks him out and frees her.
  • Karmic Death: Splattered against the wall by Wargod Upsilon, immediately after having attempted to order it to kill everyone else in the room, his team included.
  • Smug Snake: For all his bluster of being intelligent and powerful, he relies almost entirely on others to do things for him, with his only contributions being the development of half-successful underhanded plots that rely on betrayal and subterfuge.
  • White Mage: About the one thing he can do is some minor healing magic. It's not nearly enough to make any difference in battle, though.
  • 0% Approval Rating: Absolutely nobody likes him. His own subordinates only follow him grudgingly, with Hubert Lipton in particular never missing a chance to insult him even while following his orders.

Helman Military

1st Army

Lelyukov Berkov

General of Helman's First Army and their primary defensive force. He is an old and powerful warrior with an unrivalled love for his country.

Tropes exhibited by Lelyukov include:
  • Badass Beard: He has a fantastic full grey beard complementing his badass.
  • Dented Iron: Though a powerful soldier, old age, numerous battle wounds, and mental fatigue are wearing him down.
  • Death by Adaptation: While he's a playable character in Kichikuou Rance, he dies in battle in Rance IX.
  • Hostage Situation: In Kichikuou Rance, he can be recruited if his daughter is alive and captured by Rance, who then uses her as a leverage to force him to join his army.
  • Like a Son to Me: While he didn't officially adopt her, he's very fond of Pigu Gelciam.
  • My Country, Right or Wrong: He does not like Romanov and what the man has been doing, but he will not betray his country for anything. Unless Rance forces him to do so in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Old Soldier: He has over 50 years of battle experience, and while he's slowed down some from what he once was, he's still a formidable threat.
  • The Rival: A long standing one to Barres Province, the most famous general of Leazas.

Karl Ojizan

Lelyukov's number 2, and a powerful warrior in his own right.

Tropes exhibited by Karl include:
  • Expy: Of Karl from Mamatoto.
  • Hero Worshipper: He had always admired Thoma Lipton and Lelyukov, and specifically transferred into the 1st Army because of this.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Described as strong, loyal, trustworthy, and intelligent... basically a perfect soldier.
  • Older Than They Look: He is 53 years old by the time of the Helman Revolution, but appears much younger.

Bodu

A high-ranking soldier under Lelyukov, he chooses to desert the 1st Army and join Patton's revolution.

Tropes exhibited by Bodu include:
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: He and Cream Ganoblade enter into a relationship after Rance IX, but are kept apart due to their posts being so far away. He is killed in Rance X before he is able to marry her.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: He loves Helman and is very loyal to the nation, but he hates Romanov and eventually decides he cannot abide what is happening. Lelyukov actually commends him for having the courage to betray Romanov, and lets him go freely.

Io Ishtar

A mage in the Helman Army deployed with Bitch Golch to Ylapu in Rance IV. She was sent to infiltrate Rance's party.

Tropes exhibited by Io include:
  • Depraved Bisexual: She loves tormenting Sill, and dominates her multiple times while in Rance's party.
  • The Mole: She gets into the party by playing the part of a damsel in distress and then hypnotizing Rance into believing she's his lover. All the while manipulating them to Bitch's ends.
  • Shock and Awe: In combat, she specializes in lightning magic.

Pigu Geliciam

See her entry in Rance Castle.

2nd Army

Aristoles Calm

An old friend of Patton and Hubert Lipton. He is the General of the 2nd Army of Helman, in charge of defending against monster invasions.

Tropes exhibited by Aristoles include:
  • The Bait: Hunty Kalar sends him an item that attracts constant monster attacks, intending this to tie him and the 2nd Army down and keep them out of the Revolution. He realizes what she's up to but plays along.
  • Guide Dang It: Though he can be recruited in Kichikuou Rance, doing so requires refusing to ally with the Patton Faction (depriving you of four powerful generals), putting you at war with them and at the same time, Patton must kept alive until a random event where you get the opportunity to take Sheila hostage and force him to join you.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Eventually, the 2nd Army learns of his monster-attracting item and turns on him as a traitor. He uses the last of his life to send a warning to Hunty that the 2nd Army will soon be upon them.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: His reaction to Patton disappearing for years and leaving Sheila to fend for herself against Romanov. Though he agrees with Patton's aims, he refuses to work with him.

Tolstoy Bato

Convert Tax

Second-in-command of the 2nd Army, acting as a spy for Romanov. Smarter and more capable than he looks.

Tropes exhibited by Convert include:
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Not a great fighter and he looks rather ridiculous, but he's actually an intelligent tactician and leader.
  • The Mole: Romanov knew that Aristoles disliked him and would likely work against him, so he sent Convert to keep an eye on Aristoles and sabotage any sedition.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: He's most realistically drawn than the other characters of Kichikuou Rance, with shades of Uncanny Valley, while he's more cartoonish in the canon games.

Dens Blau

A member of Bitch's expedition in Rance IV. A good friend of Hubert and the main muscle of the group.

Tropes exhibited by Dens include:
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Stays behind to fight Dio Calmis and buy Hubert time to escape. He doesn't last very long against a Warlord.
  • Punch Clock Villain: He hates Bitch but obeys him because Bitch is a member of his government. He's also the one who frees Shizuka when Bitch threatens to rape her.
  • Younger Than They Look: His ragged appearance makes him look older than his actual age of 22.

3rd Army

Thoma Lipton

General of the 3rd Army during Rance 03, and among the most famous soldiers in the world.

Tropes exhibited by Thoma include:
  • Already Done for You: In Sengoku Rance, one of the dungeons already has its treasure taken by a foreigner. It's later revealed to be Thoma himself in Rance IX, who discovered the legendary sword Shiranui and gave it to his son Hubert after the latter reached knighthood.
  • The Cameo: Makes an indirect appeareance in Rance VI, where the Fiend Sieg uses his Empathic Shapeshifter abilities to read Patton's mind to transform into Thoma.
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: While Rance had always been portrayed as an above-average fighter, it was his defeat of Thoma that proved he had the power to back up (some of) his talk, and was the first major victory he had that earned him the awe of his party.
  • The Mentor: Thoma was known for taking in promising young men as students. He trained both Patton Misnarge and Aristoles Calm, who both became known as incredible leaders and fighters.
  • World's Strongest Man: He was widely considered the greatest warrior humanity had, which made it all the most stunning when Rance killed him.

Minerva Margaret

General of the 3rd Army following Thoma's death in the 7th Helman-Leazas War. A driven woman who has clawed her way to where she is through sheer tenacity.

Tropes exhibited by Minerva include:
  • Ambiguously Brown: She and her brother Maha have a darker skin tone than the rest of the Helmanians, even though most of them already have darker skin than the rest of the Continent.
  • Ambition Is Evil: Dreams of being at the top of the pecking order of Helman, and as such killed and betrayed many people for thar goal.
  • Antenna Hair: One of the few traits she shares with her little brother, along with red hair.
  • Asskicking Equals Authority: Her combat skills are second only to Thoma, and she even managed to defeat Rick Addison in single combat. There's a reason she's head of Helman's most elite troops.
  • Brawn Hilda: The only woman in the entire series to fall into this trope, as such Rance calls her an ugly hag. On a side note, she's also placed in the "Males" category on popularity polls of the series.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Growing up a street urchin means she learned at a young age how to fight dirty.
  • Covered in Scars: She's been a fighter most of her life, and it shows.
  • Exact Words: She actually ends up as the last "Empress" of Helman the way she wanted after killing Pamela and Stessel, and afterwards dies of her wounds while sitting on the royal throne, thus dying as the Empress.
  • Kick the Dog: Frequently does it to gain more power in the empire. The most notable example happens in Kichikuou Rance, where she manipulates her little brother Maha into attacking the Kalar Village to get blue crystals, only for him to die of their curse, while Minerva collects the crystals unharmed.
  • Pet the Dog: Following the defeat of Helman in Kichikuou Rance, she proceeds to kill a frightened Pamela Helman, but surprisingly doesn't lay a finger on Sheila, knowing that she was completely innocent of her family's crimes.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Defied. Helman is a country where women generally are expected to be homemakers. She struggled against this her whole life and it's a testament to her ability that she got where she is.

Hubert Lipton

See his entry in Patton's Group.

Amitos Armitage

Minerva's second in command. An honorable warrior who is always clashing with her CO over underhanded strategy.

Tropes exhibited by Amitos include:
  • Punch Clock Villain: It's clear that she's a good person and not at all in line with most of the orders she's forced to carry out.

Fletcher Modell

Once the most powerful Helmanian martial artist, by the time of Rance 03 he has long since let himself go, because of the legendary status he gained in his youth: fighting a Fiend one-on-one to a draw.

Tropes exhibited by Fletcher include:
  • Defeating the Undefeatable: Downplayed. Thanks to his Lv3 Skill Level in Unarmed Combat, his talent with martial arts was so great that he managed to fight the Fiend Kite to a draw, thanks to a special technique of his allowing him to reflect attacks back at his opponent.
  • Fat Bastard: He's so fat that Sill mistakes him for an overgrown Ham Bambara at first. His personality is, if anything, even worse.
  • Living Legend: Deconstructed. Following his draw against Kite, he gained a legendary reputation and status as a warrior, stopping his training altogether. Years later, he became obese after spending most of his life in leisure, being merely a shadow of his former self.
  • Retired Badass: Believe it or not, he was once one of the strongest warriors in Helman. After 20 years of retired luxury though, there's almost nothing left of the fighter he once was.

Henderson Dauntless

A cruel and perverted commander of Helman, who invaded Custom with a force of mostly brainwashed slaves.

Tropes exhibited by Henderson include:
  • Cutscene Boss: Gets killed by Rance witout giving much of a fight.
  • Dastardly Whiplash: Sports one and is certainly evil while being a simple commander.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: He's easily distracted by being given Maria Custard as a hostage. He's so engrossed in playing with her that Rance and Sill sneak in and destroy his army from the inside.
  • Transformation Is a Free Action: Defied. He tries to turn himself into a Stone Guardian to fight Rance, but Rance just cuts him down before he can do so.

Rovert Landstar

A monstrous and crazed commander of Helman, tolerated only because he has a knack for pulling off astonishing victories.

Tropes exhibited by Rovert include:
  • Ax Crazy: Runs into battle without pants, screaming about how he'll rape, kill, and rape any survivors (yes, in that order).
  • Expy: Of Trevor Philips from Grand Theft Auto V, down to his Ax-Crazy personality.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: He's finally killed when he tries to set fire to Rance's army, only to be caught up in the blaze himself. He had a chance to escape, but gave it up to his sister instead.
  • Military Maverick: He openly and flagrantly defies orders and does his own thing. Thoma allows this because Rovert actually ends up winning most battles he's involved in.
  • Pet the Dog: The one positive trait he has is he genuinely cares about his sister Sepia, and he's eventually killed when he sacrifices himself to allow her to escape (from a disaster he caused).

Sepia Landstar

Rovert's younger sister, a captain in Helman's 3rd Army. She was captured during the assault on The O.

Tropes exhibited by Sepia include:
  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: She desperately tries to reign in her brother's behavior, and is often seen apologizing for his antics.
  • Damsel in Distress: Captured by Kanami and interrogated by Rance to gain information on Helman's army. She's eventually released when they decide they've gotten all they can out of her.
  • Spanner in the Works: She's the reason why Rovert's final plan turned around on him: he didn't expect her to be present. This forced him to give up his one escape route in order to save her life.

Tami John

A Helman Soldier who only has a real appearance in Kichikuou Rance. He's a loyal follower of Minerva Margaret.

Tropes exhibited by Tami include:
  • Demoted to Extra: One Helman soldier in Rance IX shares the same name as him, but is just a generic soldier with no character.
  • I Owe You My Life: Minerva saved him when he was young and beset by monsters. In return, he pledged his loyalty to the Margaret siblings.
  • Taking You with Me: If the player doesn't defeat him quickly enough, he'll activate an explosive trap at the cost of his own life.

Org Matio

A cruel Helman captain, and also the son of one of Helman's leaders. He appears as an enemy in Rance Quest.

Tropes exhibited by Org include:
  • Karmic Death: He is killed in a quick battle by Rance after leading a raid on the Kalar village.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: Most of the Helman raiders are shown capturing and kidnapping Kalar, but he's going around raping them, and making it a point to go after virgins specifically.

4th Army

Nero Chapet VII

The General of the 4th Army of Helman, coming from a family of nobles. He's actually quite weak for his position, and doesn't have any leadership nor tactical knowledge, having gained his position only through family connections.

Tropes exhibited by Nero include:
  • Blue Blood: He's not part of the royal family, but comes from a distinguished family.
  • Evil Counterpart: Of Julia Lindum of the Leazas Royal Guard. Like her, he gained his position thanks to his family and is one of the weakest soldiers of the army. However, he doesn't acknowledge his weakness and is an overall jerk towards his subordinate Cream Ganoblade, while Julia is mostly cheerful and nice towards the other members of the army.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Spends his time touting about his abilities and skills despite having none of them.
  • Straw Misogynist: Considers women to be unfit in battles and tactics, with both Kichikuou Rance and Rance IX proving him wrong.

Cream Ganoblade

The second in command of Nero, and actually a better strategist and commander than him. However, his misogynistic views and overall incompetence prevents her from doing much to organize the 4th Army.

Tropes exhibited by Cream include:
  • Foil: To Minerva. Both of them are women working for the military in a sexist country, and resenting their superiors for that. While Minerva clawed her way in the ranks through manipulations and backstabbing, Cream intends to do the same, but without resorting to murder nor dirty tactics.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: She's one to Nero, much to his annoyance.
  • The Strategist: Of the 4th Army and eventually Helman as a whole following the end of Rance IX.

5th Army

Rolex Gadras

The General of the 5th Army, more laid-back and relaxed than the others. Also known as a notorious drinker, due to the death of his wife some time before Rance IX, but his friend Oruore helped him overcome his depression. In battle, he's known as the finest swordsman of Helman and wields two swords, using a special technique of his to fight his enemies.

Tropes exhibited by Rolex include:
  • Blood Knight: Always seeks strong opponents (especially swordsmen) in a fight.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: Against Leila Gleckney in Rance IX, while she was disguised as Rick Addison.
  • Dual Wield: Uses a big sword along with a Nipponese katana.
  • The Rival: To Rick Addison, also the strongest swordsman of Leazas.
  • Sole Survivor: Among the Generals of Rance IX, he's the only one left alive following the revolution.

Oruore the 3rd

Second in command of the 5th Army, and a good friend of Rolex. He works as a scout.

Tropes exhibited by Oruore include:
  • Lean and Mean: Unusually for a Helmanian, he's not very bulky and has a lithe body type.
  • Ninja: He's one of the few non-Nipponese to have a Ninja Skill, and he puts it to good use as a scout.
  • Shout-Out: He's an obvious Homage to Lupin III.

Other Characters from Helman

Patton's Group

Patton Misnarge

See his entry in Helman Royal Family.

Hunty Kalar

The oldest living Kalar in existence, to the point that she's older than humanity itself. She has lived in Helman since its founding and is largely responsible for raising Patton after his mother's death.

Tropes exhibited by Hunty include:
  • Humanity Ensues: Even she doesn't know why she looks human rather than draconic. Apparently one day she lost consciousness from extreme pain and woke up with a humanoid body. That said, genetically she is still a dragon, not a human.
  • Interspecies Romance: She and Patton fall in love and begin a romantic relationship in Rance IX.
  • Really 700 Years Old: As a dragon Kalar, she had to have been born (or rather, hatched) in Abel's era at the latest, making her around 5000 years old.
  • Wife Husbandry: She was good friends with Patton's mother and raised him since he was a young child. She later ends up romancing Patton.

Freak Paraffin

An extremely old mage in the service of Helman. He is in fact one of the few surviving Warlords of the old Holy Magic Sect, and indeed was among the founders of the Sect. Once a good friend of MM Rune, he helped Rune develop the magics that lead to the Sect dominating the human world hundreds of years ago. However, when MM Rune went insane with rage, it was Freak who killed him to halt his madness.

Tropes exhibited by Freak include:
  • Cyborg: A Magitek variant: his body is made of the Living Metal MM Rune developed and as a result he cannot grow old or die of natural causes. He can still wield magic as well as he could when flesh-and-blood.
  • Lost Technology: He's among the only living people who knows anything at all about Holy Magic. He's dedicated his life to finding a way to undo MM Rune's standing orders for the Wargods and Skeletal Marshalls, hoping that they could be used as originally intended once more: as weapons against the Archfiend. He has, however, been unsuccessful in this endeavor.
  • Mercy Kill: How he views his killing of MM Rune. Rune had gone insane and ordered both humanity and the Fiends annihilated, and Freak killed him to halt the rampaging Wargods before they could do further harm.
  • Necromancer: He invented "Death Magic", the magic of reanimating the dead. It was developed by accident, and Freak has no particular care for that form of magic.

Hubert Lipton

Son of Thoma Lipton, and a former member of the 3rd Army. He was part of Bitch Golch's group on Ylapu, but after the island falls he and Freak are rescued by Hunty Kalar, after which they join Patton. He carries a magic Nipponese sword called Shiranui, though he cannot draw out the sword's true power.

Tropes exhibited by Hubert include:
  • Blood Brothers: He grew up alongside Patton and the two are as close as brothers. He even states he sees Patton not as a lord, but as a friend (Patton agrees).
  • Heroic BSOD: He's in the midst of a minor one during Rance IV, having recently lost his father and believing Patton to be dead as well. Learning from Hunty that Patton is alive snaps him out of it.
  • Rage Breaking Point: Witnessing Freak's death at the hands of Bastet causes him to go into a rage and unleash the full power of Shiranui, which destroys the Warlord in a single blow.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Owing to being the son of the strongest warrior in Helman (and possibly the entire human world), he has always felt a strong drive to prove himself.

Dark Wings

Freya Idun

Leader of the Dark Wings assassin squad. She first served Romanov, but joined the Revolutionary Army after being defeated by Rance.

Tropes exhibited by Freya include:
  • Ambiguously Brown: She has fairly dark skin, though she has no known connection to the amazons of South Africa.
  • Glass Cannon: As expected of an assassin, she hits hard and has good evasion abilities, but cannot take a hit.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Rance places her as Kanami's subordinate, despite Freya being stronger and more skilled. Freya doesn't object but also mostly acts on her own without regard for Kanami's wishes.

Dark Heron

Another member of Dark Wings, only known by her code name. She is most similar to Freya.

Tropes exhibited by Dark Heron include:
  • Early-Bird Cameo: She first appears in a minor scene in Rance VI, where she and some other female assassins ambush Patton while he's in Zeth. Unfortunately for them, Rance is there, and things end up for her as you'd expect.
  • Hidden Eyes: Her eyes are never seen once, emphasizing her role as a spy of unknown origin.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Her true name is never revealed, and she only goes by her code name.

Dark Crow

A close combat specialist of Dark Wings.

Tropes exhibited by Dark Crow include:
  • Expy: Of Dark Crow from Mamatoto.
  • Good Old Fisticuffs: He specializes in getting up close when least expected and breaking his target with his bare hands.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Like the other members of Dark Wings, his true name is not revealed.
  • Stealth Expert: He has to be one in order to sneak up on people so well.
