Rance/YMMV

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The protagonist is a Jerkass who isn't beyond resorting to rape on his Quest for Sex. Needless to say, there's a lot more to it than that.
  • Base Breaker:
    • With a character like Rance, it's inevitable. Plenty consider him to be a Crazy Awesome breath of fresh air from the generally uninspired Visual Novel protagonists, while just as many consider him to be an immature series of rape jokes and nothing else. Whether he's a rounded character who shows large amounts of depth and Character Development across the series or a Flat Character is also a recurring argument. The fact that a woman helped create him the way he is also often a hot button topic when discussing his habits and why he is like that.
    • Sill Plain is a very divisive character, with many seeing her as a fantastic Foil to the incorrigible Rance while just as many deride her as a bland and out of place Love Interest in a series that doesn't need one. This is also reflected in the character polls where, despite being the de facto main heroine of the entire series, Sill doesn't ever place very high.
  • Crossing the Line Twice: Much of the humor is relies on rape and the eponymous protagonist being a Jerkass (though if he does occasionally have his Pet the Dog moments)
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: Triples as Leitmotif and Real Song Theme Tune (of the East Germany national anthem) for My Glorious Days. A version of this song has been present since Rance II.
    • The Rance games have had at least one other incredible piece starting from Kichikuou.
  • Fetish Retardant: Some players will be too busy laughing or awed by the sex scenes to actually be aroused by them. Part of this is due to the Awesome Music that plays during most of them and the resulting Soundtrack Dissonance.
  • Genius Bonus: How else would you recognize all of the Shout Outs?
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Or rather, Americans Love Sengoku Rance. The game is widely regarded as the best Alicesoft game period in the United States, while it is merely considered a particularly good installment in the Rance series in Japan, where Kichikuou Rance still holds the title for best in the series.
  • Magnum Opus: Definitely the one for AliceSoft.
  • Older Than They Think: Since the first Fan Translated game is Sengoku Rance (Rance 7), many will be surprised to learn that the Rance Series has been around since 1989. Not to mention the games the series itself was spun off from, Little Princess and Little Vampire, which were made in 1987 and 1988 respectively.
  • Squick: Due to Playing to The Fetishes being turned Up to Eleven, some may have this reaction.
  • They Just Didn't Care: About the design of any Non-Cute Monster Girl Random Encounter. To quote
We here at Alicesoft will maintain this half-assed policy on monster designs.
