Rance/Characters/Kingdom of Leazas

Leazas is one of the most prosperous nations ever made by humanity. Among the major countries, it is the safest place where one can live: there is no slavery like Zeth, no wealth disparities among the citizens, a tempered climate, it is not militarized like Helman, and it does not border the Monster Realm. Furthermore, it has the most fertile farmland on the Continent, as well as several lucrative trade agreements with the Free Cities. Its current ruler is Lia Parapara Leazas.

Roughly 500 years before the beginning of the LP Era, a warrior named Gross Leazas managed to assemble a large army and declare independance from Helman, reclaiming the eastern lands abandoned by the Archfiend Gai. He then founded the kingdom with the former Archfiend Castle at its capital, and stumbled upon the sword Chaos, who was still sealing the 5th Archfiend Jill. With the help of the former legend Ho-Raga, he sealed the sword's room with several enchantments, which can only be removed by several conditions, preventing entrance even to Fiends. It was recently invaded by Helman in LP 0002 to get their lands, but was chased away with the help of the adventurer Rance.

Leazas Government

Leazas Royalty and Servants

Queen Lia Parapara Leazas

The ruler of the Kingdom of Leazas, Lia is a selfish and deceitful woman who likes to abuse her power as a Queen, and seconded by her handmaiden Maris Amaryllis, who helps her to escape any threat in the court or from other political figures. Since her coronation, she stripped every noble of their power, making her the absolute monarch of her country.

Tropes exhibited by Lia include:
  • Abhorrent Admirer: Towards Rance. While Rance does like her, he finds her clinginess obnoxious and is often aggravated by her obsession with becoming his one and only woman. Pretty much removed after Rance Quest, where Rance becomes more consistently affectionate towards her.
  • The Ace: She's unmatched as a politician. By the time of Rance X, she has the nations of Zeth, Helman and Nippon under her thumb to a certain degree.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Refers to Rance exclusively as "Darling".
  • All Women Are Lustful: While she's not nearly as horny as Rance is, she loves having sex with him and is infuriated when he is cursed to be unable to have sex with any woman under level 35 in Rance Quest.
  • Anti-Hero: Of a comparable level to Rance. She's just as selfish and coldhearted as he is, but is also much more consistently cunning and pragmatic. Despite this, she is always an ally after her first appearance.
  • Babies Ever After: If Rance succeeds in defeating Rudrathaum without having rescued Sill in Kichikuou Rance, he continues ruling Leazas with Lia, who reveals herself to be pregnant in the final moments of the game.
  • Babies Make Everything Better: Becoming pregnant with Rance's child is one of the main reasons why she grows to be more accepting of his relationships with other women in the final few games of the series.
  • Bad Boss: While she's a very competent queen, her treatment of her subordinates can be pretty suspect at times. Of particular note is her relationship with Kanami, who she is perfectly fine with ordering to have sex with Rance regardless of Kanami's actual level of consent.
  • Betty and Veronica: Has this dynamic with Sill in Kichikuou Rance, where both serve as the primary heroines. Lia is the Veronica, who can offer Rance power and status beyond his wildest dreams at the cost of tying him down from his free-spirited ways.
  • Big Bad: The primary antagonist of Rance 01.
  • Big Good: From a certain perspective serves as this in all of the early games after Rance 01. As the leader of the most powerful country in the world, she's certainly Rance's most influential ally, which proves to be a big help time and time again throughout his adventures. Becomes less apparent after Rance VI, where Rance begins amassing the loyalties of the other nations of the Continent, but Lia remains one of his most helpful supporters
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Rance actually get along perfectly well when she's not acting overly clingy towards him. In fact, she's probably the girl in his life that's most similar to him in general personality.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: On the surface resembles an innocent Princess Classic when in reality she's selfish, manipulative and cruel.
  • But Not Too Bi: Is casually bisexual, but only ever shows romantic interest in Rance.
  • Character Development:
    • Grows to be more accepting of Rance's lack of interest in monogamy by Rance Quest, which results in her being less clingy towards him and their relationship overall becoming more pleasant.
    • She also become more proactive and less reliant on Maris from Rance VI onwards, showing the full extent of her political skills in the process.
  • Child Prodigy: Was already essentially running Leazas for her parents at the age of 16.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Is not at all into the idea of Rance being close to any women besides her. This causes her to be very unpleasant towards Sill. By the time of Rance Quest, she's grown to accept that Rance will never love just her, but is still dead set on being his second favorite.
  • Cute but Cacophonic: Rance considers Lia to be a world class beauty, but is often annoyed by her clingy and overly cutesy demeanor.
  • Cute and Psycho: Lia is a beautiful woman who often acts in an overly-cutesy manner, but is also a ruthless sadist who has no problem with crushing anything that stands in her way.
  • Damsel in Distress: Spends most of Rance 03 being held prisoner by the Helman Army.
  • Demoted to Extra: Reduced to a few minor appearances in Rance IV despite otherwise playing a fairly significant role in every other game she appears in.
  • Depraved Bisexual: Enjoys sexually torturing girls but is madly in love with Rance.
  • Doting Parent: Spoils Zance rotten from the moments he's born. By the time that he's a teenager, he's grown to find her to be clingy and intrusive.
  • Enemy Mine: How she perceives assisting Zeth in Rance VI. By supporting them in their darkest hour, they will be forced to become dependent on Leazas while rebuilding their country, effectively making them a subordinate nation in the process.
  • Face of an Angel, Mind of a Demon: Lia is a beautiful young woman, but also a ruthless politician with visions of world conquest.
  • Fixed Damage Attack: Her attacks involving Harumaki in both Rance III and Rance Quest deal a set amount of damage every time they are used.
  • Freudian Excuse: Witnessed her two older brothers constantly attempt to assassinate each other for the sake of their nation's throne from a very young age, which completely desensitized her to the most unscrupulous sides of politics. She later awakened to her sadistic side after she punished a maid for accidentally killing her pet iguana, which only continued to grow more twisted over time as she continued to "punish" people without suffering any consequences for doing so. Rance raping her was the first time she was ever punished for anything in her life, which awakened a deep-seated masochistic side in her that caused her to fall in love with him.
  • God Save Us From the Queen: Played with. She's actually a very competent queen, but she's also downright terrifying if you're her enemy. Patton goes so far as to admit that he finds her scary.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Is very jealous of Sill due to her closeness with Rance, and goes out of her way to antagonize her on several occasions.
  • Heel Face Turn: Goes from the main antagonist of Rance 01 to one of Rance's most valuable allies. Played with in that she's still very much a morally dubious character, just one that's on Rance's side.
  • The High Queen: Becomes the queen of Leazas some time after Rance 03, and rules the country with absolute authority.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Eventually grows to accept that Rance will never love only her, and becomes willing to share him with other women for the sake of making him happy.
  • Jerkass: Lia is mostly a heartless, self-serving opportunist who only ever helps others when she believes she has something to gain from doing so.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After spending years mercilessly torturing girls in her dungeon, she ends up suffering similar kinds of punishment while being held prisoner by Helman in Rance 03.
  • Let No Crisis Go to Waste: Being the shrewd politician that she is, she actually profits from the Collapse of Zeth by trying to invade the country.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Implied to be rather lonely beneath her spoiled exterior. While she treats Kanami terribly most of the time, she genuinely considers her to be one of her closest friends simply because she's one of the only people her age that she gets to interact with on a regular basis.
  • Love Martyr: All things considered, she's willing to tolerate a lot from Rance for the sake of having him love her back.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Lia is very opportunistic, to say the least. Of particular note is in Kichikuou Rance, where she takes advantage of Rance's desire to rescue Sill from Helman in order to force him to marry her.
  • Morality Pet: Rance is actually one to her, as he is the only one able to put a leash on her more cruel sides.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Orders Kanami to assassinate Sill in Rance IV, but Kanami gets cold feet and isn't able to follow through with it. After that, Lia only ever uses non-lethal means to try and dispose of Sill.
  • The Millstone: In Rance X, as Leazas is the most powerful country in the Continent, she isn't interested in the least in a union between the countries and actively hinders the Human Summit until Rance decides to stand in.
  • My Beloved Smother: Is as meddlesome in her son's life as you'd expect her to be, to the point of attempting to film his first sexual experience. Zance is understandably bothered by this.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Plays up her childishness to disarm her enemies. She really is a Womanchild, but she's also scarily intelligent and cunning.
  • 100% Adoration Rating: She's unanimously loved by everyone in Leazas... because she has anyone who does otherwise eliminated.
  • Pet the Dog: As much of a Jerkass as she can be, Lia has multiple moments of genuine kindness:
    • Putting her hatred of Sill aside in order to inspire a grieving Rance to continue searching for a way to rescue her in Rance Quest.
    • Accepting Kanami's wish to serve under Rance in Rance IX and even encouraging her to come visit Leazas whenever she wants.
    • Happily accepting all of Rance's children as if they were her own upon reuniting with them in Rance X: Part 2.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Was already essentially running Leazas for her parents at the beginning of the series.
  • Pregnant Badass: Leads Leazas' army to storm Helman while pregnant during Kanami's route in Rance IX.
  • Pretty in Mink: Wears a fur-trimmed coat while traveling in Helman during Rance IX.
  • Promoted to Playable: Goes from an antagonist in Rance I to a playable character in Rance III.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: Generally behaves like an immature teenager well into her twenties on top of being a coldhearted sadist.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red Oni to Maris' Blue Oni.
  • Red String of Fate: Revealed to be one of several women connected to Rance by one in Rance X.
  • The Rival: She has a very antagonistic relationship with Magic, and the two regularly bicker with each other.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Leads an all-out assault on Pencilcow in retaliation for Pastel cursing Rance to be unable to have sex with any woman under level 35.
  • Romantic Two-Girl Friendship: Her relationship with Maris is somewhere between this and being a surrogate mother and daughter.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: She's a very proactive ruler who is willing to dirty her own hands in order to benefit her country.
  • Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: Insists that her relationship with Rance is more significant than the ones that he has with any other woman.
  • Sex Equals Love: Played to the extreme. Rance raping her is what causes her to fall in love with him.
  • Shock and Awe: Most of her playable appearances allow her to use her pet thunder dragon Harumaki for attacks.
  • Smarter Than You Look: Lia's childish antics often mask the fact that she's an extremely opportunistic and cunning politician.
  • Spoiled Brat: Lia is used to getting her way, and tends to react negatively when she doesn't.
  • Sweet Tooth: Loves sweets, in particular the chocolate parfaits with mini cream puffs that Maris makes for her.
  • Take Over the World: Her dream is to one day conquer the entire world under Leazas' banner. Part of her love for Rance is rooted in her belief that he has the capabilities to make that happen. Sure enough, he can do just that in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Third-Person Person: Refers to herself in the third person in Japanese. Phased out in MangaGamer's translations.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Like Rance, it's only a marginal one, but by the time of Rance Quest she's grown more accepting of the fact that she'll have to share Rance with several other women.
  • Unknown Rival: This is her relationship with most of the women Rance is close to, who she views to varying degrees as threats to her. Of particular note are Sill and Sheila, who she pretty much despises despite them being nothing but kind to her.
  • The Usurper: Forces her parents to abdicate the throne some time after Rance 03. Played with in that both of her parents had already been expecting her to overthrow them for years, and cared so little about running their country that they happily gave it to her without a fight the second she asked.
  • We ARE Struggling Together!: One of her few shortcomings as a politician is that she only cares about Leazas and is exclusively focused on her nation's interests in the event of a war with the Monster Realm.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Has long blue hair.

Maris Amaryllis

The personal handmaiden of Lia, and a skillful person when it comes to management and politics, often seconding the queen behind the scenes. One could consider her to be the true ruler of Leazas, often asked by Lia before making any decision, and she also spent her life protecting Lia from various political threats in the court, cementing her cunning and manipulative nature in the series.

Tropes exhibited by Maris include:
  • Armor-Piercing Question: In the anime adaptation of the first game, she is on the receiving end by Rance, who makes her realize that her My Master, Right or Wrong behavior did more harm than good to her beloved princess. Rance: You say that your princess' mind is broken and that she deserves help. Well, what have you ever done to actually help her?
  • Badass Lesbian: Being in love with Lia while being a fierce Praetorian Guard certainly does help.
  • Blade on a Stick: While she doesn't have any actual Skill Level with spears, she is quite proficient with the weapon, and imbues them with magic to do additional damage.
  • Dangerous Forbidden Technique: Healing 9, a special ability which removes all pain from her body to fight beyond her limits. However, the trade-off I excruciating pain after the spell wears off, leaving her immobile and helpless.
  • Hopeless Suitor: To Lia, since she only has eyes for Rance. In a bit of irony, Rick Addison is one to her.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: She was once considered the true head of Leazas thanks to her political and combat skills to boot. Downplayed by the later games, with Lia becoming more independant from her and taking decisions herself.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She doesn't mind Lia being with Rance as long as she's happy. It's also reflected in her Fortune in Kichikuou Rance, where her fate directly depends or whether Lia is happy or not.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: Never questions Lia's decisions, which has something to do with her sadistic behaviour up until Rance I/01. Also present in Kichikuou Rance, where she would listen to many of Rance's orders, no matter how reckless.
  • Praetorian Guard: For Lia, on top of being her handmaiden and advisor.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Despite being very demure and composed much of the time, she's actually quite powerful on her own as a warrior, with many tricks up her sleeve in times of need.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Lia, oh so much. Rick learns it the hard way in Kichikuou Rance, after getting rejected by her.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Green hair.

Kanami Kentou

A Ninja from Nippon who was saved by Lia when she was still in training, and has worked for her ever since. She was the one responsible for the kidnappings in Rance 01, even though she was very reluctant to do it.

Since then, she appeared in multiple games, often upon request of Lia who orders her to watch over Rance, much to her dismay.

Tropes exhibited by Kanami include:
  • Achievements in Ignorance: Actually manages to create her own technique by misinterpreting an existing one.
  • Ascended Extra: In Rance I, she was just a nameless henchwoman of Lia who had only three scenes and wasn't even named. Then Rance III made her part of the main party from the start, and she became one of the most recurring characters in the series.
  • Always Someone Better: Suzume is this to her as she completely trashes her when Kanami duels her.
  • Butt Monkey: Oh very much yes. In the early games, any chance they get is an easy target for Kanami abuse.
  • Fragile Speedster: Befitting a ninja, she has excellent agility and evasion as a playable character, but her defense is lacking.
  • I Owe You My Life: She was saved by Lia from starving to death after getting lost in a training trip with her fellow ninjas.
  • Jack of All Trades: Partly due to her lack of training, she has average abilities for a ninja, but is nonetheless competent enough to hold her own whenever she joins Rance. Also, due to a mistake on her part, she developed her own technique, the Fire Bowl Jutsu.
  • Master of None: Was one before resuming her training in the beginning of the series, which has something to do with Rance teasing her for her mediocre abilities.
  • Miraculous Malfunction: While trying to learn the Fire Bomb technique with a ninja scroll given by Lia, she ends up misinterpreting it and accidentally creates her own technique, the Fire Bowl Jutsu.
  • The Mole: Leaks information about Zeth during the Collapse of Zeth to Leazas. Justified because it's her job.
  • My Master, Right or Wrong: The same as Maris, due to I Owe You My Life above.
  • Ninja: The most prominent in the series by far.
  • Normal Fish in a Tiny Pond: Because ninjas are rare on the Continent, her performance is considered remarkable, but when she goes to Nippon, she finds herself outmatched by more competent ninjas like Suzume and Inukai.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Following Sengoku Rance, she starts being more competent and actually reaches her Level Cap by the time of Rance X.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: See the above Took a Level in Badass. Also, as seen in Rance X Part II, she end up birthing and training her daughter Uzume, who becomes the strongest ninja who ever lived.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Purple.

Leazas Royal Guard

Leila Gleckney

The Captain of the Royal Guard, a special unit of female Knights acting as Leazas Castle's protectors. She is considered the most powerful female soldier of the whole Leazas Army, and is held in high regard in the country. She first appears in Rance III/03, under Mind Control by the Fiend Ithere. Afterwards, she appeared in several games as a playable character up to Rance X. Thorough the series, she has a fair amount of Ship Tease with the General of the Leazas Red Army, Rick Addison, who has yet to reciprocate her feelings. Also, don't put her next to alcohol.

Tropes exhibited by Leila include:
  • Action Girl: The most powerful female Knight of Leazas.
  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Upon driking alcohol, she becomes very assertive and aggressive.
  • Always Second Best: While she is Leazas' finest female soldier, she ends up falling short behind Uesugi Kenshi, Rick Addison and Rolex Gadras in term of fencing and raw power.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Happens in her first appearance in Rance III/03, courtesy of the Fiend Ithere using his brainwashing powers.
  • The Cavalry: The last Leazish commander to join Rance following his reinforcements letters in Sengoku Rance. Humorously, she also mentions Lia almost sending all of her armies to support Rance.
  • Curb Stomp Battle: On the receiving end, by the Helman's Army Commander Rolex Gadras. Disguising as Rick Addison also didn't help, as his armor and his BFS were too heavy for her and didn't match her fighting style.
  • Curtains Match the Window: Red eyes with red hair.
  • Lady of War: Keeps a graceful and feminine attitude as she fights on the battlefield.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Whenever she gets drunk.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Has this dynamic with Rick in Kichikuou Rance and Rance X. They do.

Tillday Sharp

One of the latest recruits of the Royal Guard from the Leazas Military Academy, Tillday is a petite yet competent and very ambitious girl whose goal is to eventually become the most powerful and influential soldier of Leazas. As such, she clawed her way through the ranks with various schemes, such as using her looks and body to gain favors, waiting for many opportunities to do so, on top of having the skill to assert her position. She also developed a one-sided rivalry with the current "holder" of the title: Leila Gleckney, though the latter refused her challenge attempt for the role of Captain. Rather surprisingly, she's good friends with fellow genius Arlcoate Marius, who graduated with her when they were in the Academy, and she's also the one who recommended her to the Leazas Black Army, as a tactician. She made her first appearance in Rance Quest.

On a side note, she's mostly inspired from a character of the non-canon Kichikuou Rance, named Rafalia Musca, who shares many of her character traits and backstory.

Tropes exhibited by both:
Tropes exhibited by Tillday include:
  • Babies Ever After: Ends up having a kid with Rance. Unfortunately, her kid is too young to join her siblings in their quest.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Excluding kids, she is the shortest character in the series, but she's also a member of the Royal Guard.
  • She's All Grown Up: She's a lot taller and bustier in Rance X: Part 2.
  • Training from Hell: Ends up training the El Party after they experience their Level Drain.
Tropes exhibited by Rafalia include:
  • Ambition Is Evil: Will do anything in order to rise through the ranks, including using her body to manipulate Rance: should he choose her as a General, she will abuse her power and continue to climb her way to the top, with the critical point being her asking Rance to fire Rick Addison from the army.
  • Betty and Veronica: She's the Veronica to Arlcoate's Betty.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Played straight or subverted depending of Rance's choice regarding the winner of the final exam duel.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Since she cannot beat Arlcoate head on, she drugs her beforehand to give her a Potty Emergency to disqualify her. It still doesn't work.
  • Murder the Hypotenuse: Downplayed. She is prone to suggest Rance to kick out Arlcoate and choose her as a general during her training at the Academy, and will highlight all of her flaws.
  • The Vamp: Use her looks and charms to seduce Rance into putting her in the army without waiting for the final exam. Whether she succeeds depends on the player's choice.

Julia Lindum

One of the youngest members of the Royal Guard and a special case among them. While joining the Guard requires one to be amongst the strongest female warriors of the country, her family connections allowed her to part of it despite not having any sort of training or fighting skills at all. As such, she is the weakest member of the Royal Guard, if not the entire military. Despite her low strength and stamina, she maintains a cheerful attitude and shows a surprising resilience to pain. She's also close friends with the Queen Lia, and one of the former Legendary Five, British the Hero, trapped in concrete and located in a dungeon near Leazas Castle.

Tropes exhibited by Julia include:
  • Author Appeal: She's one of TADA's (the creator of Rance) favorite girls, shown in-game by having the Hanny King (his Author Avatar) take a liking to her. It is reflected in-game by the Hanny King empowering her.
  • Bloody Hilarious: Her bad Reverse Grip inflicts this on her hands.
  • The Ditz: She's not very bright and has tendency to believe everything she's told.
  • Faux Action Girl: Is one due to being helped by her family connections and not having the training proper to be part of the Royal Guard. She does have the potential to be a full-fledged Action Girl, thanks to her above-average Level Cap of 38.
  • Genki Girl: Shines of optimism and enthusiasm depite being one of the weakeast soldiers.
  • Meganekko: As Super Julia.
  • Odd Friendship: With British.
  • Reverse Grip: Played for laughs in Rance 03. Her skill with a sword is so bad she holds it by the blade. Not that she minds.
  • Stepford Smiler: Downplayed, she is very aware of her weakness and inability to become stronger, but it doesn't prevent her to be the local Genki Girl.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Following the Hanny King empowerement, she goes from weakest member of the Royal Guard to strongest.

Leazas Military

Leazas Red Army

Rick Addison

The Red Reaper of Leazas General of the Leazas Red Army and the strongest knight in the country known and feared across the world as "the Red Reaper of Leazas". While he's ordinarily the glowing picture of knighthood, he secretly possesses an extremely boyish and unthreatening face that causes him to lose all of his fighting spirit when not covered by his helmet. He first met Rance during the 7th Leazas/Helman War, where he was instantly won over by the roguish warrior's swordsmanship. While Rance was initially somewhat threatened by him, he has since grown to view him as one of the few men strong enough to earn his respect.

Tropes exhibited by Rick include:
  • The Ace: Viewed as such in-universe as Leazas' peerless top warrior. In reality, while he has quite a few weaknesses, he's still almost unstoppable in battle.
  • Adorkable: When he's not on the battlefield, he reveals himself to be endearingly awkward and bad at socializing.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: His crush on Maris is doomed to remain one-sided.
  • Always Someone Better: Has shades of this towards Rance in Rance 03 and Rance IV, where Rance actively tries to keep him out of action in order to avoid the risk of being overshadowed by him. No longer the case in any of the games that take place after these, as Rance has since determined Rick to not be a threat to him as a man.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Loses one of his arms and one of his legs during the Timeskip between parts 1 and 2 of Rance X.
  • Ascended Extra: A glorified Mauve Shirt in the original Rance III, his surprising popularity caused him to become the second most prominent male character in the series. In a more direct version of this trope, he is much more prominent in the Updated Re-release Rance 03 than he is in the original.
  • Badass Longcoat: His civilian attire, which he wears throughout Rance IX, sports one.
  • Bash Brothers: He and Rance fully cement themselves as this in Rance IX, where the two frequently lead the Revolutionary Army's charges against the forces of the Helman Army and are able to predict the other's actions in the heat of combat.
  • Battle Couple: Becomes this with Leila by the time of Rance X. While Rick himself initially requested Leila to retire from the Royal Guard upon proposing to her out of fear that she would get seriously harmed during the war with the monsters, Leila refused due to her belief that her feelings as a knight were just as important as her feelings as a woman. Leila's resolve eventually persuaded Rick to give in and gladly continue fighting alongside her.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's an absolute Nice Guy off the battlefield, but a terrifying Blood Knight when on it.
  • BFS: His signature sword Byroad is about as tall as he is.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Suggested to serve as this to Menad.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Appears alongside various other characters during the battle with Noce in the original Rance III to weaken him. Rick notably deals much more damage than every other character that does this.
  • Bishōnen: Has a disarmingly gentle face beneath his helmet, and is consistently described as being "cute" rather than "handsome" by women.
  • Blood Knight: Loves fighting against strong foes and shows outright boyish glee at the prospect of getting to fight Rance and fellow Master Swordsman Rolex.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Introduced in Rance 03 under the mind-controlling effects of Ithere's Apostles. While the player never gets to fight him, he serves as an unbeatable obstacle for the Liberation Army until he is able to regain his senses.
  • Breakout Character: A fairly minor character in his first appearance, he has steadily become the second most prominent male character in the series after Rance himself, and consistently ranks high in popularity polls as a result.
  • The Champion: As Leazas' strongest warrior, he's often called to represent his country in major international affairs, such as the collapse of Zeth in Rance VI and the Helman revolution in Rance IX.
  • Char Clone: Rick is a dead-ringer for Char Aznable, to the point where his armor is modeled to look like a gundam.
  • Chaste Hero: Gets flustered easily when confronted with erotic situations, to the point of fainting when approached by a scantily-clad prostitute. Part of Rance's positive opinion of him is rooted in his status as this, as Rance believes that he is not a threat to his chances with women.
  • Clueless Chick Magnet: Several women show passing interest in him, but his oblivious nature quickly puts a stop to any kind of flirting.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Rance's womanizing tends to go completely over his head. On the very rare occasions when he manages to pick up on it, he has no qualms with intervening if he believes it to be unacceptable.
  • The Comically Serious: Generally behaves as though he's in an intense war drama. While this works fine most of the time, it's frequently foiled when he's opposite more comedic characters like Rance or Julia.
  • Cool Helmet: His helmet is so cool that it more or less is the source of all of his power.
  • Cool Mask: Wears an eye-covering one throughout Rance IX. It has the same confidence-boosting function as his helmet does.
  • Cool Shades: Sports a pair during his appearance in Rance X: Part 2.
  • Cool Sword: Byroad is an effervescent orange BFS that can grow and stretch to extend his reach. Its actually not a particularly strong weapon, as its blade is very dull and its size makes it cumbersome, but Rick is simply so good at wielding it that he is able to swing it with the speed and strength of a much smaller and sharper sword.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: He's fantastic with a sword and... kind of a klutz with everything else.
  • Crutch Character: In Rance IV. He's strong and sturdy, and very likely to carry the party throughout chapter 2, but his movement range is pitiful. While he remains useful throughout the game, his inability to move very far will likely make him quickly become far less of the One-Man Party that he is at the beginning of the game.
  • Custom Uniform: Wears a heavy variant of the standard Red Army armor, along with a helmet inscribed with the kanji for loyalty.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Doesn't like sweet potatoes.
  • Dual Boss: Serves as the final boss of Kanami's route alongside Tilde in Rance IX.
  • Duel Boss: Rance can optionally fight him one-on-one during the operation to liberate Leazas in Rance X. The game continues regardless of who wins, but Rick chooses to call off his marriage to Leila due to believing himself to be unworthy of her if he loses.
  • Dude Looks Like a Lady: His face is very feminine, which can lead to him looking rather girly in certain artwork.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: An advertisement for the Leazas Army in Rance 01 is implied to feature him as the spokesman, though Rance doesn't pay enough attention to think much of it.
  • Eleventh-Hour Ranger: Joins the party near the end as a late game bruiser in both Rance 03 and Rance VI.
  • Elite Army: The Red Army is considered to be this. While Rick himself is the most powerful warrior in Leazas, the soldiers of the Red Army are also considered to be the strongest the country has to offer. By the time of Rance X, the Red Army is regarded as the single strongest army in all of humanity.
  • Extreme Doormat: Puts up no kind of resistance when teased by others, and is quick to agree when his failures are pointed out.
  • Famed in Story: Is already known as Leazas' strongest warrior at the beginning of the series.
  • Farm Boy: Started life as a farmer's son in rural Leazas before getting scouted by his mentor, the previous general of the Red Army.
  • Fire-Forged Friends:
    • While Rick has always admired Rance, Rance gradually begins to respect Rick to a certain degree as they continue fighting alongside each other. By the time of Rance X, their friendship is a platonic version of Everyone Can See It.
    • He also qualifies as this with Hubert. While Rick initially viewed Hubert, as he did all Helmanians, as nothing but a villain, he steadily grew to respect him as both a warrior and as a man over the course of Rance IV. By the time of Rance IX, he has no problem with referring to Hubert as a friend and the two clearly have a deep respect for one another.
  • Frontline General: He's (in)famous for leading every charge that the Red Army makes.
  • Generation Xerox: The epilogue of Rance X shows his son Sturm, who looks like an orange-haired clone of him and is also a member of the Red Army.
  • Glass Cannon: His unit in Kichikuou Rance has outstanding attack power but poor defense, making it fall apart just as easily as it tears apart enemies.
  • Good Is Not Soft: While he's generally rather subservient, he never backs down when he is in opposition to someone else's actions. This includes Rance, who he is otherwise completely loyal to.
  • Grim Reaper: Along with his nickname of the "Red Reaper", an image of the classic depiction of the Grim Reaper often shows up during his special attacks.
  • Guest Star Party Member: Is playable in a single quest in Rance Quest and nowhere else. The Magnum expansion allows him to be unlocked as a full party member in the very late post game. He also qualifies as this to a degree in Rance VI, as while he remains in the party up to the Final Boss, he leaves before the start of the post game, preventing him from being used in any of the Bonus Dungeons.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Rick is very self-critical and tends to define himself by his failures rather than his successes. Admitting that he still has much to learn is something of a Catchphrase of his.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Suggested to be this with Ex, though Ex's limited screentime limits this somewhat.
  • Hold the Line: The climax of Rance IX has him hold off the remnants of the Helman 3rd Army by himself to buy Rance, Patton, Sheila and Hubert time to make it to Lang Bau's throne room. He manages no problem.
  • Hopeless Suitor: In love with Maris, who is aware but totally uninterested.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Downplayed but still present. Much of his initial interactions with Rance consisted of him completely misinterpreting Rance's selfishness as being some form of ingenious strategy, due to his instinctive belief that no one as skilled with a sword as him could be a bad person. By the later games, he has wised up to Rance's unscrupulous character but is still generally a bit too willing to forgive his antics, either because he's too much of a pushover or too oblivious to do otherwise.
  • Humble Hero: Is quick to praise others while downplaying his own strengths.
  • Innocently Insensitive: His poor social skills occasionally cause him to say or do thoughtless things completely unintentionally. Of particular note is when Leila begins wearing her hair differently hoping to attract his attention, only for him to completely overlook it.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Once he wises up to Leila's feelings for him, he begins to worry that his longstanding obliviousness to them is proof that he isn't worthy of her love. He still steps up to fight for his future with her if Rance tries to break them up in Rance X, but will call off the marriage precisely due to believing himself to be too weak to be worth her love if he loses.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: Rick is a valiant, kindhearted and upstanding knight, and is described by various sources as being the picture of chivalry.
  • Law of Chromatic Superiority: As the leader of the Red Army, he's naturally the strongest warrior in the entire Leazas army.
  • Lightning Bruiser: While his actual speed as a unit varies from game to game, in-universe he's always said to move very quickly and hit very hard in battle. This is reflected in both Rance IX and Rance X, where he's both strong and maneuverable.
  • Lovable Coward: Without his helmet or mask on he retains his sweetness but completely loses his backbone.
  • Magic Feather: His helmet is suggested to be this, as is this mask that he wears in Rance IX. While his strength and fighting ability remain without them, he is only capable of mustering the courage needed to fight when he has one of them on.
  • Master Swordsman: Possesses the level 2 Sword Combat skill, allowing him a prodigious level of talent with a sword. He has made the most out of it, and is regarded as one of the strongest individuals on the Continent due to his phenomenal skill.
  • Mighty Glacier: In Rance 03, Rance IV and Rance VI his outstanding strength is offset by limited deployment options.
  • Nice Guy: Rick is generally a kindhearted and noble young man who has nothing but positive things to say about his allies and is very willing to forgive his former enemies.
  • Noble Male, Roguish Male: The noble male to Rance's roguish male.
  • No Social Skills: Downplayed, but when Rick is forced to act in any way outside of his comfort zone as a formal knight, the results tend to be pretty awkward. He's also very bad at picking up social cues from others, and often requires the obvious to be pointed out to him.
  • Oblivious to Love: Admits to being bad with romance, which he proves time and time again. Along with being completely incapable of telling when he's being hit on, he is unable to notice Leila's obvious feelings for him until she spells them out to him. Even after they become a couple, he still has trouble picking up on her attempts at flirting with him.
  • Odd Friendship: By all logic he and Rance should hate each other, but they actually get along pretty swimmingly.
  • Official Couple: He and Leila are happily engaged by the time of Rance X's beginning.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome:
    • The "Incident at Fort Parapara", which is the event that made him world-renowned and consisted of him singlehandedly defeating a division of the Helman 1st Army to protect one of Leazas' most important fortresses.
    • If Leazas is able to liberate itself from the Monster Army without Rance's assistance in Rance X, Rick fights and kills Joseph entirely offscreen, winning the war in the process. This is in contrast to the other three nations' self-liberation events, where the battle against their respective Great Monster General is given a rather lengthy amount of attention, suggesting that Rick's fight was a Curb-Stomp Battle in his favor.
  • Older Than They Look: You'd be forgiven for assuming that he's in his early twenties when, by the time of Rance X, he's 32.
  • One-Man Army: Recognized as one in-universe. He has a very high level cap of 70 and the Sword Combat level 2 skill level, both of which result in him being a force of nature on the battlefield. This always carries into gameplay, where he is often the only character to possess a higher attack stat than Rance. The Monster Army in Rance X is absolutely floored that a human could tear through their ranks so effortlessly when they first encounter him on the battlefield. In the same game, he goes on to trade blows with both La Hawzel and Lexington, despite having no means of conventionally damaging them, and manages to hold his own.
  • Parental Substitute: Ends up serving as more of a father figure to Zance than Rance himself does. While Zance would never admit it to his face, he genuinely respects Rick as his mentor.
  • Passing the Torch: Passes the title of Red Army general to Zance between parts 1 and 2 of Rance X.
  • Promoted to Playable: Goes from an NPC in Rance III to a playable character in Rance IV. From a more meta perspective, he went from unplayable in the original Rance III to being a party member in the Updated Re-release Rance 03.
  • Red Baron: "The Red Reaper of Leazas".
  • Remember the New Guy?: Appears seemingly out of thin air to deliver the Trojan hanny to Patton in Rance III. The Updated Re-release does away with this by giving him a proper introduction much earlier in the game.
  • Retired Badass: Becomes this by Rance X: Part 2, where he has retired from military service due to losing An Arm and a Leg. He's still recognized as one of the world's greatest swordsmen.
  • The Rival: A friendly example towards Rolex.
  • Screaming Warrior: Shouts a lot when in battle.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Sensitive guy to Rance's manly man.
  • Signature Move: "By La Way", wherein he slashes his sword in a triangle shape to deal a large amount of damage across a wide area. While he can do this with any sword, Byroad's extension powers make it even more effective.
  • Slasher Smile: Described as always having a smile on his face in the heat of combat. It's so creepy that Rance compares it to something out of an exorcist movie.
  • Technician Versus Performer: The technician to Rance's performer. Rick trains tirelessly to perfect his swordsmanship and maintain a stable level of strength, while Rance relies mostly on improvisation in combat and tends to slack off when not on adventures. This is illustrated during their respective fights with Rolex in Rance IX, where Rick wins through his perfect sword technique while Rance wins through his unpredictability and raw strength.
  • Took a Level in Badass:
    • Believe it or not, Rick, who is already regarded as one of the strongest in the world, experiences this across the series. In Rance 03 he is described as fighting with no regard for his own well-being, resulting in him lacking in defense and allowing him to get defeated at various points by strong enemies. He's also noted to be somewhat lacking as a commander, and bemoans his own inability to keep his troops alive when filing a war report in Kichikuou Rance. By the time of Rance IX, his swordsmanship is described as having no weaknesses and the incarnation of the Red Army led by him is considered to be the strongest in history. By Rance X the Red Army under him is outright declared the strongest army in humanity.
    • He also went through this in his backstory, going from an untrained and cowardly Farm Boy who lost in the first round of a sword fighting tournament to the strongest swordsman in the country.
  • Undying Loyalty: Possesses this towards both Leazas and Rance.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Remove his helmet and he's a complete wuss. Interestingly, this is only ever used against him in Rance IV, with all of his other appearances never having it happen anywhere besides outside of combat.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer: His moveset in Rance 03 consists of a powerful but slow-charging attack that hits every enemy on screen, and three attack-buffing skills. He can only do one thing, but he does it hard.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Is terrified of ghosts, and fights less effectively when traveling through dungeons as a result.
  • Will They or Won't They?: Has this dynamic with Leila for most of the series. They do.
  • The Worf Effect: Gets defeated by both Isis and Minerva in Rance 03 to prove their credibility as threats. Averted in all of his other appearances, where he mostly lives up to his reputation as a One-Man Army.
  • World's Strongest Man: Widely recognized as this in-universe following the death of Thoma Lipton, though the truth of the matter is that there are many who are as strong or even stronger than he is. At the very least, he's certainly among the world's strongest men.
  • Worthy Opponent:
    • His friendship with Rance mostly has to due with their mutual respect of the other's fighting ability.
    • He also has this dynamic with Rolex. While Rolex is annoyed to learn that his fated rival is a baby-faced Pretty Boy, he nonetheless respects him a great deal more than he does Rance.
  • Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Refuses to hurt children. Even when a child is directly threatening his life. Miracle considers it to be proof that he does not possess true strength.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Does not discriminate based on gender, and considers a strong woman to be just as worthy of an adversary as a strong man.

Menad Shisei

One of the youngest of Leazas knights, having been made the vice-commander of the Leazus Red Army at just 17. She's Kanami's best friend, as well as a proud admirer of knights and adventures, and quickly falls for Rance after meeting him.

Tropes exhibited by Menad include:
  • Action Girl: And quite a young one, being promoted to a gatekeeper at 15.
  • Ascended Extra: Originally just a gatekeeper in Rance I with a single line of dialogue. The remake saw fit to merge her with a character from Kichikuou Rance on the basis of them both being Leazas soldiers with short blue hair and greatly expanded her role as well, and Rance 03 and Rance X then made her playable.
  • Hero Worshipper: For both Rance and Rick.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Like many characters in the series, she's convinced Rance is some kind of great hero and not a violent, uncouth nymphomaniac. Somewhat justified in this case as Rance tones down his behavior when around her.
  • Number Two: To Rick. It's mentioned she's the one running things whenever he's off getting involved in Rance's adventures.
  • Teen Genius: Became the second-in-command of Leazus' strongest army at age 17.

   Leazas Black Army

Barres Province

General of the Leazas Black Army and the Supreme Commander of the nation's military. A veteran soldier who has served the royal family for three generations, he is regarded as a living legend by most of the world. He first encountered Rance during the 7th Leazas/Helman war, where he continuously mistook Rance's selfish recklessness as strategic brilliance, causing him to instantly develop a profound respect for the young man. Unfortunately for him, Rance is incapable of seeing Barres as anything more than a useless old man, and treats him terribly as a result.

Tropes exhibited by Barres include:
  • Adaptational Badass: Almost all of Barres' screentime in the original Rance III consists of either him failing to accomplish a task or Rance insulting him for his incompetence, overall making him seem pretty useless. The Updated Re-release Rance 03 expands his screentime to have him more consistently pulling his weight, and makes a point of showing that his failures were hard-earned by his enemies.
  • A Father to His Men: Barres values each of his soldiers as if they were his own children, and is deeply respected by the vast majority of them as a result.
  • Badass Mustache: He sports a rather impressive 'stache which he is frequently shown or described as twirling between his fingers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: His archer unit ends up saving each of the main armies during the Leazas Liberation Army's battle in Hoch Gorge in Rance 03.
  • Birds of a Feather: Rance X reveals that he has built a vast network of connections with almost all of the other old men of the Continent, and that they all occasionally gather to trade war stories with each other.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Spends the beginning of Rance 03 under the mind control effects of Ithere's Apostles. Unlike Rick and Leila, though, Barres doesn't seem particularly crazy while brainwashed, and instead acts like his usual goofy self.
  • Butt Monkey: Barres can't catch a break, and spends most of his screentime being abused and belittled by Rance.
  • Call Forward: Rance briefly moves through a mausoleum dedicated to members of the Province family in Rance 01.
  • Cool Old Guy: Barres is generally laid-back and upbeat, and is shown to be open-minded when it comes to accepting new talent into the Leazas army.
  • Crack! Oh, My Back!: Suffers from chronic back pain, which he brings up fairly frequently. Wenlina finally cures it for him in Rance X.
  • Demoted to Extra: Only makes a small appearance during the end credits of Rance IV.
  • Dented Iron: Was a formidable warrior in his youth, but old age has taken its toll on his body and made him rather frail. This is generally reflected by his in-game stats, which tend to give him below-average attack and health for a person at his level. However, his commanding ability, which was always considered to be his greatest strength, has not decayed at all with age.
  • Disc One Nuke: Barres is given to the player very early on into Kichikuou Rance and remains one of the all-around strongest units at the player's disposal throughout it. It's not unheard of for players to stomp through most of the game using only him and Rance.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: Joins the party in the very late game of Rance 03.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Has an eyepatch and is a legendary general.
  • Famed in Story: He's known far and wide as Leazas' legendary black general.
  • Forgot Flanders Could Do That: So much of Barres' screentime consists of Rance mocking him that it can be easy to forget that he's a military commander of legendary skill. Fortunately, the few occasions where we get to see him in action tend to make up for this.
  • Four-Star Badass: He's the Supreme Commander of the entire Leazas army.
  • Hidden Depths: Enjoys playing golf in his spare time and is also very good at doing handstands despite his advanced age and stocky build.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Convinced that Rance is an ingenious strategist and a compassionate Ideal Hero despite both of those things being blatantly untrue even to the most uninformed observer. Even after Rance continuously treats him like garbage, Barres simply chooses to rationalize it as being deserving punishment for his failings as a soldier.
  • Ignored Expert: Throughout much of Rance 03 Rance repeatedly ignores Barres' advice and refuses to allow him to contribute much to the effort to retake Leazas despite Barres being a seasoned military leader. Most notably, Rance chooses to put him in charge of a tiny unit of archers during the battle for Hoch Gorge simply because he doesn't want him to get in the way. Barres and his archers end up saving the day several times throughout the battle anyway.
  • It Was a Gift: His armor is unique compared to the rest of the Leazas army, and was given to him by Lia's grandfather in recognition for his military service. He considers it to be his most prized possession.
  • My Greatest Failure: He's so upset by his failure to defend Leazas from Helman in Rance III that he requires Maria to talk him out of killing himself to atone.
  • Nice Guy: Barres is generally friendly to others, and has no problem with adopting war orphans that he encounters during military campaigns.
  • "No Respect" Guy: Played with. While most of the world treats him with the level of respect that you'd expect a legendary veteran general to receive, Rance and Lia, the two characters he is shown interacting with the most, only see him as a senile old man and treat him accordingly.
  • Old Soldier: An elderly knight who has served across the three generations of the Leazas royal family.
  • Out of Focus: Goes from a prominent supporting character in Rance III and Kichikuou Rance to disappearing from the series entirely for nearly twenty years before making a small appearance in Rance IX and finally coming back into some prominence in Rance X.
  • Parents as People: Loves his daughter Haurein but often worries that he has brought her up in such a way that she'll never be able to enjoy living an ordinary life. Despite Haurein making it clear to him several times that she values her career as a knight more than anything else, Barres still can't help but try to find a husband for her to settle down with.
  • Parental Substitute: Adopts Sioux after her village is destroyed in Rance 03.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Rather surprisingly given his position, Barres' primary function in the story is to serve as Rance's personal Butt-Monkey whenever he appears. This is buffered somewhat on the occasions where he is a playable character, which consistently make him very useful regardless of the combat system.
  • Promoted to Playable: Goes from an NPC in Rance III to a playable character in Kichikuou Rance. From a more meta perspective, he went from unplayable in the original Rance III to being a party member in the Updated Re-release Rance 03.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He's open-minded enough to be willing to offer a non-Leazas native the position of general in his army simply due to recognizing their strength and military talent.
  • Red Baron: "The Black General".
  • The Rival: Has a longstanding rivalry with Helman's Lelyukov Berkov, a general of similar standing to himself. The two unfortunately never get to settle their score before Lelyukov is killed.
  • The Strategist: Possesses the Strategy level 1 skill level, though his abilities as a tactician are consistently presented as being secondary to his abilities as a field commander.
  • Support Party Member: As a playable character in Rance 03, his stats are sub-par and his offensive options are rather limited but he comes with several very useful attack and defense buffs that apply to the entire party.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: Though Rance may never respect him, Barres is occasionally given scenes that show other characters treating him with the admiration and reverence that someone of his standing deserves.
  • Weak but Skilled: While he has a formidable level cap of 37 and the Sword Combat level 1 skill level, old age has weakened his physical abilities considerably. Despite this, his talents as a military leader are unmatched and more than make up for his individual weakness. His frailness serves as his Fatal Flaw as a playable character in Kichikuou Rance, as while his army excels in all forms of combat and can both give and take plenty of damage, attacks that aim at the commander directly can kill him in a single hit due to his low health, instantly wiping out his army in the process.

Arlcoate Marius

A extremely shy girl recently graduated from the Leazas Military Academy, who joined the Black Army with the recommandation of her friend Tillday. She is considered the greatest female tactician of the country, with some even saying one of the greatest of the world. However, she has an utter lack of self-confidence and consider herself ugly, crippling her abilities more often than not. She first appears in Kichikuou Rance as a student of the Military Academy, then Rance Quest after graduation.

Tropes exhibited by Arlcoate include:

Sioux Province

A young girl who disappeared mysteriously in the Forest of the Lost, part of the Free Cities. She was found by the Rapu, a tribe of fairies, and was adopted by them. She lived a quiet life until the events of Rance III/03, where her village was caught in a battle between Rance's party and the Apostle Isis. Unable to fight back, Sioux was forced to escape with Rance, and joined him to learn the ways of the world with him. Upon returning to her village however, she rediscovered her vilage destroyed by the Fiend Satella, master of Isis. She later ends up adopted by Barres Province, out of compassion for her. She reappears much later in Rance X, as as soldier of the Black Army.

Leazas Blue Army

Cordoba Burn

The Blue Wall of Leazas General of the Leazas Blue Army. A giant of a man with an upbeat and fiery personality. He is known worldwide for his defensive prowess, earning him the nickname of "The Blue Wall of Leazas". Off the battlefield, he is Happily Married to a considerably younger wife. He first appears in Kichikuou Rance, followed later by Rance X, along with his second-in-command Kinkaid Brambla.

Tropes exhibited by Cordoba include:
  • Ascended Extra: Went from only being a name in the manual of Rance III to being a full-fledged character in Kichikuou Rance.
  • An Axe to Grind: He possesses the Axe Combat Level 1 skill and is always described as using an axe whenever he is mentioned to be carrying a weapon. Despite this, his sprite in Kichikuou Rance shows him with a sword.
  • Benevolent Boss: Has a great rapport with his troops and hangs out with them regularly off the battlefield. On the battlefield, he inspires them with his passion and willingness to fight with them on the frontlines.
  • Big Eater: One of the select few characters to possess the "Big Eater" title that is necessary for the player to be able to out-eat Galtia in Rance X.
  • The Big Guy: Stands at a massive 206cm with bulging muscles and a loud and high-spirited personality to match. Orion, the series' main character designer, compared his silhouette to that of a Gundam.
  • Big Guy Fatality Syndrome: He's by far the biggest character associated with Leazas and is also the only one who can potentially die in Rance X. Also present to a degree in Kichikuou Rance, where there are events that can only be achieved if he is killed, meaning that the player is encouraged to allow him to die.
  • Big Guy, Little Guy: The big guy to Kinkaid's little guy.
  • Birds of a Feather: Gets along well with Rolex, Lordring and Gandhi, who are all also very Hot-Blooded men.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: He's huge, loud and loves to fight and party.
  • The Bus Came Back: Finally returns in Rance X, after over twenty years of absence.
  • Butt Monkey: Downplayed compared to Barres, but he spends all of Rance 03 getting ignored by Rance and is the only Leazas general that is capable dying in every game that he physically appears in.
  • Call Forward: A bottle reserved in his name appears in Pulptenks' father's bar in Rance 01.
  • Chastity Couple: He and Fururu agreed to wait until she turned 20 to consummate their relationship. As Kichikuou Rance takes place before this occurred, their relationship is still totally chaste during it.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Becoming an expert at defensive combat has hampered his skill at offensive combat, to the point where he receives a heavy stat penalty if used in offensive warfare in Kichikuou Rance and is incapable of attacking at all in Rance X.
  • Crutch Character: Serves as this to a degree in Kichikuou Rance. He's given to the player near the very beginning of the game and can easily defend entire cities by himself no matter how many enemies he's up against right away. While he remains just as good at defending territories to the very end of the game, the enemy quickly begins attacking so many times per turn that it becomes impossible for the player to rely entirely on him for protection, which can lead to problems if they haven't been building up any other defensive units.
  • Died Standing Up: His body is found standing proudly following his Heroic Sacrifice in Rance X, to the point where it takes the soldiers who discover it a moment to realize that he's dead at all.
  • Dying Moment of Awesome: Dies successfully defending one of Leazas' fortresses despite being vastly outnumbered and manages to stay standing afterwards if he's killed in Rance X.
  • Fatal Family Photo: A variant. He is mentioned to have just finished writing a letter to his wife during both the scene where he is assassinated by Gekkou in Kichikuou Rance and the scene where he is killed by the Monster Army in Rance X.
  • Genius Bruiser: Along with being a formidable warrior, he's a very skilled military commander who leads Leazas' second-largest army.
  • The Ghost: While he's around and contributing to the liberation of Leazas throughout a significant chunk of Rance 03, he never actually appears on screen. This is played for laughs, as Rance is given several opportunities to meet him, but actively chooses not to due to being disinterested in spending time with another man.
  • Guide Dang It: Arguably the single hardest character to keep alive in Rance X. In order to allow him to live, the Fiend Extermination Squad has to provide reinforcements to Leazas throughout turns 6 through 9. While this wouldn't be that hard to pull off in other instances, the window when it occurs during coincides with several other important timed events (such as rescuing Hornet) that the player is required to complete in order to achieve an A-Rank ending. Keeping him alive while accomplishing all of the other tasks in time is doable, but requires quite a bit of planning ahead.
  • Happily Married: He and Fururu are known for being a loving couple with perfect chemistry. If Cordoba isn't partying with his soldiers during his off time, chances are he's thinking of, talking about, writing to or doing something for her. When discussing his marriage with Rick in Rance X he flat out proclaims it to be "the best thing that's ever happened to [him]."
  • Heroic Sacrifice: If Leazas doesn't receive reinforcements from the Fiend Extermination Squad at any point between turns 6 and 9 in Rance X, Cordoba will give his life protecting one of Leazas' key fortresses from being occupied by the Monster Army for long enough to allow reinforcements to arrive and secure it.
  • Hidden Depths: He's an excellent harmonica player who knows hundreds of songs.
  • Hold the Line: Dies buying enough time to allow reinforcements to arrive and prevent the Monster Army from capturing one of Leazas' key fortresses if he is killed off in Rance X.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's enormous, loud and intense. Rance only needs to spend a few seconds around him to start suffocating from high tension.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: He's one of the biggest guys in the world, while his wife is very petite.
  • The Mentor: Becomes this to Sachiko in Rance X. While Rance introduced them to each other with the intention of having Cordoba improve Sachiko's skills as a guard, a misunderstanding caused him to instruct her in singing instead. Nonetheless, they clearly get along great and have a lot of mutual respect for each other.
  • Nice Guy: He's a very friendly guy who mostly takes Rance's attitude and Kinkaid's unscrupulousness in stride.
  • Odd Couple: With Kinkaid. He's a Hot-Blooded patriot who's more than willing to give up his life on the battlefield while Kinkaid's a cowardly schemer who is only interested in living as comfortably as possible. This is emphasized by their respective leadership methods; while Cordoba inspires his troops by fighting alongside them on the frontlines and building camaraderie with them off the battlefield through parties and friendly competitions, Kinkaid takes the much more cynical approach of reminding them to do what they're paid for and allowing them to partake in raping and pillaging enemy territories after conquering them. Despite this, they're actually a surprisingly excellent team, as Kinkaid's preference for behind the scenes work allows him to organize the Blue Army's troops while Cordoba focuses on fighting on the frontlines.
  • Red Baron: "The Blue Wall of Leazas".
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to Kinkaid's Blue.
  • Rescue Romance: Met Fururu after rescuing her family from debt collectors.
  • Running Gag: He keeps trying to join up with Rance throughout Rance 03 only for Rance to turn him down before he even gets to appear on screen.
  • Secret Character: He essentially amounts to being this in Rance X. His survival isn't tied to anything important in the story and requires quite a bit of planning to be able to happen, meaning that the player is likely only ever going to be able to use him if they go out of their way to make sure that he doesn't die.
  • Stone Wall: In both of his playable appearances, he is among the best defensive fighters at the player's disposal, and can shake off nearly any attack likes it's nothing, but has limited offensive options. In Rance X, all of his skills are defensively-oriented, meaning that he can't even attack at all under normal circumstances.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Once he starts playing his harmonica for you, he'll keep playing until he finishes all of his hundreds of songs, making him very hard to get rid of.
  • Undying Loyalty: Is willing to sacrifice his life on the battlefield and serve under a tyrant if it's for the sake of Leazas.
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Downplayed. Cordoba's hardly ugly, but he stands out quite a bit when opposite his adorable beauty pageant runner up of a wife. Rance certainly believes this to be the case in Kichikuou Rance, where he tries to paint their marriage as being a crime against humanity as a result.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Has dark pink hair.

Kinkaid Brambla

A scheming and sometimes unscrupulous man working for the Leazas Blue Army as the second-in-command. In contrast to Cordoba, he prefers to work behind the scenes and live as comfortably as possible, despite having a diverse skill set useful for battles. On top of his conniving side, he cynically reminds all of his soldiers what they're paid for and allows them to take part in raping and pillaging enemy countries to boost troop morale, all the while keeping a comfortable status, making him quite ironically loyal to Leazas due to his lack of ambitions. He, along with Cordoba, only appeared in Kichikuou Rance and Rance X much later.

Tropes exhibited by Kinkaid include:
  • Dirty Coward: Despite having several useful skills for war, he prefers his own safety above all else and it can weaken his combat prowess on the battlefield.
    • His profile in Kichikuou Rance says it all: His swordsmanship in duels and his tactical ability on paper is comparable to a general. However, he has a timid side, and he doesn't exhibit the full extent of his skill in real battles.
  • Eyes Always Shut: To emphasize his scheming personality.
  • Jerkass: Downplayed. While he can come across as cynical and cruel, he's mostly concerned about his own comfort, not necessarily evil.

Leazas White Army

Ex Banquet

The main commander of the Leazas White Army. While the Red Army focuses on the offensive and the Blue Army focuses on the defensive, Ex uses the White Army for tactical warfare and covert operations. His devotion for Leazas is very strong, to the point he would not hesitate to fight back should the country fall under enemy invasion or the control of a tyrant. He appears first in Kichikuou Rance...As the leader of the Ex Rebellion, opposing the newly crowned King Rance, after being granted the position from the Queen Lia. He also appears in Rance 03, part of the coalition to free Leazas from the Helman Invasion, and later in Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by Ex include:
  • Anti-Villain: He's opposing Rance at the beginning of Kichikuou Rance in an attempt to free Leazas from his tyranny. He does have legimate reasons to do it though, since it's Rance.
  • The Cameo: Retroactively appears in Rance 03, albeit in a single, short scene because Rance didn't want to talk to the other men of the army.
  • Civil War: His first appearance in the series caused it, due to Rance not being able to hold his tongue very long.
  • Megane: Wears round glasses, showing his status as a collected tactician.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Freaks out upon learning the death of Pegasus Fort in Kichikuou Rance, prompting him to wonder if rebelling against Rance and the other commanders of Leazas was a good idea from the start.

Haurein Province

The daughter of the famous Barres Province and second-in-command of the White Army. She has a rather negative relationship with her father, as he holds conservatives values and doesn't want her daughter to be part of the military and intends to marry her and have a family. Along with Ex, she made her first appearance in Kichikuou Rance as part of the Ex Rebellion, followed by Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by Haurein include:
  • Action Girl: Again, being part of the Leazas Army always makes you one.
  • Like Father, Like Son: She wants to follow in the footsteps of her father, but the latter doesn't want her to do it due to her being a woman.
  • Spirited Young Lady: Well-mannered, courteous, formal and rebellious, with her first appearance as part of the Ex Rebellion.
  • The Ugly Guy's Hot Daughter: Downplayed. While Barres is by no means ugly, only old, Haurein stands up as very beautiful compared to him.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Pink hair.

Pegasus Fort

A veteran General working for the White Army and mentor of Ex Banquet, who joined him in his rebellion against King Rance in Kichikuou Rance.

Leazas Mage Corps

Chaka and Asuka Cadmium

Chaka was the former General of the Leazas Mage Corps, until an encounter with a Wicked Witch, who turned him into a costume, unable to move on its own. As such, he gave the command to Lieutenant General Melfeis Promenade. While he's still able to use Magic Arts, he needs to be worn by one his relatives: only his great granddaughter Asuka could fill this role, who wears him and acts as his transportation, but her very young age and childish behaviour makes her difficult for Chaka to give orders. Both of them appeared in Kichikuou Rance and Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by both include:
  • Badass Adorable: Thanks to Chaka using his power through Asuka, she harbors great power while also being very cute.
  • Clothes Make the Superman: Despite being a costume, Chaka retains his Magic Arts skills, but can use them only through a vessel with magical power, Asuka being the only one with it. By wearing him, Asuka is effectively able to use his powers.
  • Constantly Curious: Asuka, who managed to get Mill Yorks to teach her how to summon ghosts thanks to her numerous questions.
  • No Pronunciation Guide: Due to her young age, she mispronunciated Barres as "Barresh" in Kichikuou Rance.
  • Sleepyhead: Justified, since Asuka is only a child drafted into war, she's often seen sleeping standing up.
  • Summon Magic: In Kichikuou Rance, after several weeks of training by Mill Yorks, she manages to create her own ghosts.

Melfeis Promenade

The Lieutenant General of the Leazas Mage Corps. Since Chaka was turned into a costume, she took his place as General for the time being. In her youth, her hometown was attacked by bandits: in a desperate attempt to defend it, she ingested a cursed elixir to enhance her Magic Arts. Hence, her Lv1 Magic Skill upgraded to Lv2, but it came with a severe drawback; every two months, her power starts to increase her lust to the point of overloading her mind and potentially kill her. The only way for her to keep it under control is to have sex with someone with a higher level than hers, Ex Banquet being her main benefactor. As such, she appeared in Kichikuou Rance as part of the Ex Rebellion, followed by Rance X.

Tropes exhibited by Melfeis include:
  • Beauty Mark: In her Rance X design, under her right eye.
  • Brought Down to Badass: It is possible to free her from the curse in Kichikuou Rance, by having her bathe in the Uncurse Spring in the Free Cities. Despite reverting by to a Lv1 Magic Skill, she's still able to wreak havoc on the battlefield.
  • Covert Pervert: Unintentional on her part, due to the curse placed on her.
  • Deus Sex Machina: In order to keep using her Lv2 Magic Skill, she needs to have sex every two months, otherwise she would die of seizure.
