Disgaea: Hour of Darkness/Characters
For characters that appear in multiple games in the series, see the main character sheet.
Laharl
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi (JP), Barbara Goodson (EN)
Main character of the first game and Prince of the Netherworld. After waking up from a two year "nap" and discovering that his father King Krichevskoy has died some time ago, Laharl sets upon claiming the throne for himself. Laharl is cocky, spoiled and quick-tempered. How much of this is real and how much of it is a front he puts up to feel powerful is a question that most of his vassals ponder. He also has a physical aversion towards optimism and well-endowed women.
Tropes associated with Laharl:
- 100% Adoration Rating: One might not think this would apply to Laharl, but according to his description in Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku, he is loved by his subjects. Averted in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, where almost all of his closest vassals have left him, including the servant Prinnies, during his feud with Etna.
- 108: Laharl has made 108 punishments for the Prinny squad, which are put to use if the Prinnies screw up. Number 1 is the least severe punishment, and number 108 is Negative Salary.
- Abdicate the Throne: In the Item God 2 ending, Laharl decides he is not ready to be Overlord yet and hands the title over to Etna.
- Aesop Amnesia: He goes back to his Noble Demon Card-Carrying Villain self in his subsequent appearances, though they've mostly been cameos.
- Though it's debatable that he never really changed that much. At the end of the first game, he has become a wiser king and accepted The Power of Love - he never really stopped being egotistical and a brat. And it's not like he was genuinely bad beforehand.
- Affably Evil: While he's still stubborn and prideful, Laharl can arguably count as this due to his status as a Noble Demon. Best shown when Laharl singlehandedly destroys the Earth Defense Force's armada while giving the crew time to escape. Naturally, he denies it.
- Allergic to Love: In Chapter 5, Laharl actually loses statistics when lustful demons accost him with words of encouragement, love and kindness.
- All Genes Are Codominant: Averted: Laharl's mother was human, but his status as a Half-Human Hybrid is never brought up in the games, though it is in the novels, he exhibits all of the traits of demons, and like all Overlords, he's extremely powerful.
- All There in the Manual: In the games' canon, his aversion to busty women is played for many laughs and jokes at his expense. The novels, though not canon to the games, paint a much darker story: Laharl's aversion to busty women was instilled into him by his aunt, a well-endowed demon that abused him quite severely after his mother's death (for an century's worth, no less), on the account that no one with human blood should take the throne of the Overlord.
- An Odd Place to Sleep: Laharl sleeps in a coffin despite not being a vampire. Justified: we never saw his bedroom before he was poisoned by Etna and lulled into a two-year sleep.
- Anti-Hero (Type V)/ Anti-Villain (Type I): According to him.
- Backstory:[1]
- Badass:
- Badass Adorable: Emotionally vulnerable, cute as a button, and as of a cameo in Zettai Hero Project, is apparently strong enough to burn modern-day Earth to the ground.
- Badass Arm-Fold: Default pose.
- Badass Long Hair: His hair is mostly short, but his hair antennas are really long and are the design choice that makes him stick out the most and complements his badassery perfectly.
- Cultured Badass: Yes, believe it or not. Laharl does indeed know how to be sophisticated and how to behave himself at formal affairs.
- Heartbroken Badass: Too young to fall in love, but he is absolutely devastated in the end because of Flonne's fate. How bad it turns out depends on the ending you get.
- Bad Boss: In Chapter 8, he speculates that maybe making the prinnies work 20 hours a day with no days off was a bit harsh.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Laharl's chest is always completely exposed, but is never drawn with nipples.
- Battle Cries: "Ora! Here I come!" "Wha! Ha! Bite the dust!" "Here I come! Haaahahahaha!" "Die".
- Beneath the Mask: Laharl tries his very best to be completely perceived as an evil demon, but his more positive qualities, like his forgiving, noble and strangely kind nature, is regularly provoked to the surface throughout the game.
- Big Sister Worship: Towards Etna. She's not his real sister, but she was practically raised by his father and the nature of their relationship is very similar to that of siblings. His worship of her is not obvious, but it's implied that he craves recognition and respect from her. She, on the other hand, seems to see him as a Annoying Younger Sibling.
- Blush Sticker: Baby Laharl, drawn by the series artist Takehito Harada.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Canonically, his height is four feet and five inches tall - not that anyone would pick up on that if his impressively sized ego was all they were measuring.
- Break the Haughty: The ending where Flonne was sentenced to be a flower for all eternity because of Laharl can be seen as this. Even the traditional Bad Ending where he sacrifices his life to save Flonne counts, though it's a lesser example.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: Laharl's got some strange ideas of what it means to be an Overlord. If money is needed, it’s time to loot some noble’s mansion.[2] Assassin angels/Love Freaks are potential recruits. Laughing evilly on a regular basis is a requirement. Ideal Overlord tasks are making it rain pepper so the humans will sneeze their nostrils out or deprive children of their sleep by giving them addictive videogames. Heroes should not just be defeated; enslavement is the way to go. Granted, demon standards of evil lie on this level generally, anyways - Laharl's theme song proclaims not washing his hands after going to the bathroom and playing with fire as pillars of wickedness.
- But Now I Must Go: In the ending you get if you've beaten the Item God 2, it looks like Laharl has killed Lamington, but it turns out he's still alive. Mid Boss comes and explains the situation and Flonne is returned to normal. Laharl declares that if he acted so quickly in anger he is not ready to be the Overlord and teleports away.
- Byronic Hero: A comedic version.
- Cape Wings: According to The World of Disgaea artbook, Laharl had this ability with his scarf, though it never made it into the game. It does show up in the anime, though you have to wonder how he managed to take down a space armada without the ability to fly.
- Card-Carrying Villain: "...The pendant is telling me that my heart is wicked. That's good to know." When someone who has evil in their heart touches the pendant, it will burn them. Vulcanus was burned by it after he stole it from Flonne in the same episode.
- A Child Shall Lead Them: About halfway through the game he becomes the Overlord, and even though he is 1313 years old, he appears to be mentally and physically about 13.
- Conveniently an Orphan: It's convenient for the plot, but not much else.
- Crazy Consumption: After tasting Hanako's delicious food he thinks she used Zombie Juice make it so good. Hanako takes this as an insult.
- Crossdresser: Purely Fanon, but it is a popular theory as to what the embarrassing picture depicts him doing.
- Crutch Character: He can solo the entire main story if you grind a bit, but this is not the way to conquer the bonus content.
- Cute Is Evil: Cute? You bet! Evil? He likes to think so.
- Cute Little Fangs/Fangs Are Evil: In his default state and less negative emotions, his fangs seem small and adds to his cute look, but when he’s pissed off, his mouth will open wide and reveal two fangs that, more than anything else, resemble shark teeth.
- Dark and Troubled Past: You wouldn't expect it from a Disgaea game, but the novels say otherwise.
- Deadpan Snarker: He has his moments.
- Death From Above: His final attack Meteor Impact.
- Deceased Parents Are the Best: Laharl‘s mother was a loving woman and his father a righteous man - both conveniently dead. Deconstructed in that his mother’s death had a hugely negative impact on him and his father, being reincarnated as Mid-Boss, is by technicality still alive.
- Defrosting Ice Prince: He starts out distant, constantly irritable and condescending, but eventually warms up to Flonne and Etna.
- Demoted to Extra: Over the years, Etna and Flonne have appeared in more spinoffs while Laharl has only had two significant appearances.
- Determinator: His superior persistence is one of the attributes he is the most proud of. He won't let anything get in his way of what he wants.
- Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu?: 10 years after the game in the novels, Laharl manages to deliver a completely one-sided beatdown to Baal, and for additional humiliation, let his team of prinnies loose on Baal after his defeat. It's not Did You Just Punch Out Cthulhu? anymore - more like Did You Just Sue Cthulhu Ten Billion HLs and Make Him Your Slave?
- Dodge the Bullet: In Disgaea 2, Etna and Flonne gets pissed at Laharl for various reasons and attacks him with swords and guns; he dodges all of the initial blows, though just barely, and shows of some nice foot work. He does this occasionally in Disgaea Infinite as well.
- Don't You Dare Pity Me!: "Don’t give me that look of pity. I just had a bad concussion. Bad enough that I lost my memory of getting a concussion."
- Dramatic Wind: Wind follows Laharl constantly during battle, making his scarf billow. Interestingly, it has become a tradition among Disgaea main characters to have a Dramatic Wind following them during battle.
- The Dutiful Son: Does not have any siblings, but Vyers calls him "quite the dutiful son" in the manga, which is very true; Lahal is quite devoted to his duty as per his heritage.
- Elemental Punch: His Blazing Knuckle move is fire-based and runs off his physical attack stat.
- Emotionally Tongue-Tied: "C, congra-... Aghh! I said, congratulations!".
- Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: Even at his worst, he doesn't deny he loved his mom.
- Even Overlords Has Standards: Despite a Card-Carrying Villain who loves to plunder and kill everything, there are several lines Laharl will never cross. Case in point, Jennifer's sex-ed and rape.
- Evil Eyebrows: Different from normal evil eyebrows in that each look like a straight line, but they have the same effect as it makes him look perpetually angry, even though he is not. He usually sports an ambiguous smile and acts rather content, but he's chronically irritable and never stays content for long.
- Evil Laugh: "Laughing is very important to an Overlord!"
- Annoying Laugh: Etna thinks so; "Ugh, that stupid laugh...".
- Evil Overlord: In training.
- The Evil Prince: Laharl thinks he is this; he even claims he was ready to dethrone his father before he went and croaked on his own. Of course, that only applies for a certain level of evil.
- Exposed to the Elements: Laharl is one of the least dressed characters NIS has ever created, yet he never makes any remarks about changing temperatures despite adventuring to parched lakes of lava and frozen tundras.
- Expressive Ears: They move ever so slightly along with his mood.
- Expressive Hair: Laharl’s antennas changes shape according to his current emotion. For example, they will curl up in shape when Laharl is lightly surprised, sharpen if he is annoyed and be perfectly erect if he is angry.
- Expressive Scarf: Like his antennas, his scarf will change shape in accordance with his mood.
- Fantastic Racism: Laharl is a victim of this in the novels, where his aunt and uncle organizes a resistance against his reign because he is half human.
- Fetal Position Rebirth: In the opening art of the game, Laharl can be seen sleeping in a loose fetal position floating in a void under the Red Moon, and in the Red Moon chapter, Laharl is figuratively reborn by rediscovering love.
- Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: Laharl simply wears a scarf and short shorts, making it look like he is confused about what season it is. Subverted when it turns out he's still not exactly mild, but in a completely different way than he exhibits through his appearance.
- Friendless Background: When Laharl was asleep for two years, people just assumed that he was dead or simply forgot about him. No one cares beyond that, except Etna who wanted to use him for her own gain, and one of his vassals who expressed disappointment that she didn't get to use the grave she dug for him.
- Generation Xerox: Laharl's father does his best to invoke this trope, by working with Lamington to have Laharl become best friends with an angel of high expectations like himself and further the work to unite the Netherworld and Celestia that he started. It is also mentioned that Laharl and King Krichevskoy are rather similar. Laharl probably inherited his big ego from his father.
- Glory Seeker: He desires to be respected and looked up to, and absolutely hates to be disrespected.
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: Laharl sports bright yellow eyes when extremely annoyed and glowing red eyes when agonized or enraged,
- Good Hurts Evil: Being horribly allergic to love and optimism makes Laharl Disgaea's prominent example of this, but any evil being can be hurt by Flonne’s pendant, light or dark.
- Greed: No one is touching his allowance, even if it is vassals late for their paychecks, and has been called stingy by Etna several times.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: It would be easier to create a list of things that don't annoy him.
- Hair Antennae: Deliberately styled to make himself look taller.
- Hereditary Hairstyle: It also seems to run in the family.
- Hairstyle Inertia: Laharl may have been born with his current hairstyle if his baby picture from Takehito Harada is any indication.
- Half-Human Hybrid: His mother is human, but most people still refer to him as a demon, if only for convenience's sake. Oddly, his half-human status is never even mentioned in the games proper, though in the novels, it's an important part of his Backstory.
- Hates Being Touched: It’s never stated directly that he hates to be touched, but the few times someone has approached him closely, he has reacted negatively, especially if said person is well-endowed.
- Heavy Sleeper: In the intro to the first game, Laharl wakes up from a two-year nap, with Etna violently waking him up. Said nap was due to poison by Etna, but considering that he initially meant for it to be a ten-day nap, he's still playing the trope straight.
- She had tried to wake him up by attacking him with various deadly weapons and even when it took over a year to wake him up, and it did not seem to hurt him the slightest.
- Asleep for Days: And years when Deep Sleep is necessary!
- Good Morning Prince
- Hellish Pupils
- The Hero: Sort of.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: He does genuinely care about Flonne and Etna, even if he won't admit it.
- Hot-Blooded: Comes along with his Card-Carrying Villain status: he's quick to anger, has a massive ego, and can often get hammy in his remarks.
- How Dare You Die on Me!: Laharl’s reaction to Flonne’s death in the ending. "You're going to abandon me, like my mother did? I didn't give you permission! Is this what you call love? If it is, then I'll never believe in love! Ever!"
- Human Mom, Nonhuman Dad: His dad was the demon Overlord, and his mother was a human witch.
- Humble Hero: Mostly inverted, but he has a unusual tendency to become embarrassed when praised:
Hmph... Quit complimenting me so much. It's embarrassing.
- Humongous Mecha: The Laharl Kaiser V as Disgaea 4 DLC.
- I Miss Mom: He never says it, but he obviously does.
- Impossibly Cool Clothes: His scarf. Good luck trying to replicate that one in real life.
- Improbable Age: Even though he is mentally and physically 13 in demon years, he rules the Netherworld, but he manage quite nicely all things considered.
- Inadequate Inheritor: His father thought he was this at the time of his death, so he had asked Etna to make sure Laharl became a great Overlord. Everyone seems to think Laharl is incompetent because he is such a Royal Brat, but the good news is that Laharl is better then he initially lets on.
- Ineffectual Loner: Never willingly alone, but absolutely miserable when he is.
- Inferiority Superiority Complex: Different in that he does think highly of himself, but is desperately afraid of others thinking less of him.
- Innocent Cohabitation: With Flonne and Etna.
- Innocent Prodigy: Despite usually having an incredibly selective attention and tending towards naivety, he does have his moments of depth and contemplation where he displays his intelligence.
- Insufferable Genius: Laharl really is as powerful as he lets on, and when placed in a difficult situation he will beat his way out of it.
- It's All About Me: “Everyone, pay attention to me!”
- I Was Just Passing Through: Laharl regularly insists that his less-than-evil actions are mostly for his own convenience. Nobody buys it.
- Japanese Pronouns/Japanese Honorifics: "Ore-sama", it emphasizes how exceedingly well he thinks of himself.
- Jerkass Facade: Partly, many of his negative qualities originate from his wish to be a “good” demon, but the others are just a part how he is.
- Just a Kid: Etna uses this trope to call him out on his emotional immaturity, while Gordon and Jennifer are in disbelief that the overlord appears to be a thirteen-year-old boy.
- Keet: Normally not seen, but when he becomes the Overlord, he immediately begins shouting excitedly "Overlord! Overlord! Overlord!" and as his first act practices his Evil Laugh for hours on end.
- Kid Anti-Hero: A physically and mentally 13 year old Noble Demon protagonist.
- Lean and Mean: Not to an extreme, but Laharl's waist is disturbingly thin; it’s even thinner then his female companions’.
- Leitmotif: An Ode to Lord Laharl, and arguably, Disgaea.
- Like Parent Like Potential Spouse: With Flonne. See Loving a Shadow below.
- Lonely Rich Kid: His parents are dead, he is implied to have a vast fortune in money, he is implied to have no close friends other than Etna and Flonne, and according to Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, he has severe abandonment issues.
- Loving a Shadow: It is mentioned that Flonne is very similar to Laharl’s mother, and there is quite a lot of ship teasing between the two.
- The Magnificent: In English, Laharl calls himself "The great Laharl" and the like, instead of "ore-sama" like in Japanese.
- Meaningful Name: In addition to the volcano Theme Naming, Laharl’s name means flow of mud from a volcano and the guy who fathered him is named after a real volcano (as a matter of fact, Laharl’s name is the only demon part of the volcano Theme Naming that is not named after a volcano). This makes sense because of how Laharl is in comparison to his father.
- Memento MacGuffin: In the novels, Laharl’s mother used to wear a scarf that is very similar to his own. It’s never stated that he inherited the scarf from his mother, but knowing Laharl, it’s probably not a coincidence.
- Momma's Boy: He would have most likely become this had his mother still been alive. Her death had a huge impact on him: he went beyond mourning her death by denying the very emotion that symbolizes the bond between them, love, and he falls ill every time someone just mentions the words she used to preach to him.
- Mona Lisa Smile: His default expression is a coy smirk.
- Mood Swinger: He has 13 different moods that he drasticly swings between. Justified since such drastic mood swings are perfectly normal for a teenager. Not an extreme example because all of the moods have recognizable causes, and they are of a wide spectrum, not just extremes.
- Muscles Are Meaningless: Does it look like he can lift his own BFS?
- My Eyes Are Leaking: "What's this, a tear?...I didn't know I could shed tears."
- My Name Is Not Durwood: He is not very fond of the pet name "Harlie" Jennifer decided to give him. Not like it'll stop her from calling him that.
- Nakama: Anyone who hurts his best friends Flonne and Etna are in for a lot of pain. He might not have the guts to say he loves them, but he has no qualms about telling what bad idea it is to mess with them because he will not let you get away with it.
- The Napoleon: The character notes in The World of Disgaea artbook even declare that he has a Napoleon complex.
- Nigh Invulnerability: His reaction to Gordon firing a raygun at maximum power in the novels? "It tickles". Etna also claimed that 5 shots from a rocket launcher, 4 missiles at point-blank distance and 3 X-ray beam cannons did absolutely nothing to him. However, he can still be injured by high-powered and magic-imbued weapons.
- In the games, Laharl is Made of Diamond, easily shaking of physical abuse from Flonne and Etna, even heavy abuse after a few hours nap, without a single scratch and talking like he did not even feel pain. Also has been shown to be able to be in the vicinity of his own planet-busting attack as of Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories.
- Noble Demon: Despite his claims to the contrary, he isn't particularly evil, and he never does anything truly heinous, but he denies it adamantly.
- Nobody Touches the Hair: Laharl is a sensitive about his hair.
- Noodle Incident: You never do figure out what that embarrassing picture was about.
- No Sympathy: When Flonne tells she is dying from the loss of her pendant and asks Laharl for help, his response is he does not care and he would not mind using violence against her even in this weak state. Old? Maimed? Diseased? Does not matter! She provokes him to help her nevertheless.
- Odd Friendship: With Flonne.
- Oedipus Complex: He openly acknowledges that he hates his dad[3], while he really liked his mother.
- Though being just reminded of his father makes him change his mind about killing Hoggmeiser and stealing all of his stuff, that is a lot positive influence wielded, but the guy he supposedly hate. Also Krichevskoy does not appear to believe Laharl when he claims he hates him in the flashback, he seems to simply dismiss it for an act to appear demonic and that Laharl will or have to grow out of it one day.
- Thursday lampshades this when he and Gordon find his mother's picture stashed in his drawer in Disgaea Infinite.
- One-Man Army: Single-handedly made mincemeat out of 2,000,000 spaceships. While holding back.
- One Of The Girls: Is perfectly happy with being around Flonne and Etna, and shows no interest in finding some male friends to hang out with, though it generally stems from not caring much about gender differences.
- Orgasmically Delicious: When Laharl gets his hands on Super Rare Pudding in Disgaea Infinite, he expresses its deliciousness with extreme delight and even has a hallucination of himself walking on a road of puddings in space! Justified because he had been starving himself to fully enjoy the pudding all day long.
- Orphan's Ordeal: When Laharl lost his mother is unknown, but the negative, though unusual, impact it had on him follows him in plain sight like a shadow.
- Otaku: Laharl loves game consoles and games according to Prinny 2. The intro for Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories also has him watching a TV playing the intro.
- Overlords Prefer Swords: Most promotional art will usually depict him with a sword and his stats and weapon proficiency seem geared toward this. Ingame, however, he's decent with any melee-type weapon and bows.
- Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Only hinted at, but he is completely thrown off by The Talk, a girl just saying she is going to the bathroom and the slightest hint that Flonne or Etna thinks of him more than a friend. Combined with hints of Hates Being Touched, the lifestyle of a Celibate Hero and the fears of Why Did It Have To Be Sexy Women, it's plausible.
- Percussive Maintenance: This is how Laharl wanted to deal with Mr. DVD Player in Disgaea Infinite when Flonne was upset because it will not play her Blu-ray Disc; "I'm sure a smack or two will fix everything."
- Person of Mass Destruction: He becomes this if you beat him during the story mode of Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories or if you get his ending in ZHP.
- Picky Eater: According to the Prinnies, he tends to complain about his food tasting bland.
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: No bigger than 4’5’’ (135cm), but is the strongest demon in his own Netherworld nonetheless. Cameo appearances also put him at the higher end of the Overlord power spectrum.
- Precious Photo: Laharl has a picture of his mother hidden in his room.
- Prehensile Scarf
- Pretty Little Headshots: Laharl gets shot in the head by Etna at the start of Etna Mode, we never get see the wound, but the lack of severity of it is magnified by the fact that Laharl simply sleeps it off.
- Pride: Laharl's most prominent flaw.
- Pursuing Parental Perils: Being an Overlord, like his father, is the aspiration Laharl burns the most for. He sets out to make an even greater legacy than his old man.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: 1313 years old.
- Requisite Royal Regalia: Not his normal outfit seen above, but the one he is given in NIS's upcoming game Bikkuriman Kanjyuku Haoh, namely this which includes a big ass crown, ermine cape and... a candy sword?
- Royal Brat: He initially refused to pay his vassals because that would involve spending his allowance. Also frequently confiscates Etna's desserts for his consumption.
- Sacrificed Basic Skill for Awesome Training: Laharl trains everyday to surpass his predecessor according to The World of Disgaea, and is very capable and powerful, but he is incapable of performing mundane tasks and providing for his own needs, like food. According to the prinnies, he can't even set the VCR.
- Immature Boys Cant Cook: And eats a study diet of ramen when there are no vassals to make their food for them.
- Scarf of Asskicking: His scarf flares like flames and it changes like it has a mind of its own. But he clearly got control over it, as it changes shape along with his mood, and he has deliberately puffed it out to make him seem bigger. Most likely, A Wizard Did It.
- The novels and the anime takes it even further and have him use it has a shield, wings, and a long hand (kinda).
- It's also pointed out in Disgaea Infinite, when Laharl tells Raspberyl to stop tugging his awesome scarf.
- Skilled but Naive: Laharl puts all of his soul, mind and power behind being a good Overlord, but lacks the experience of a leader; he has little to no idea what a good leader is supposed to do, leading him to deem important tasks as beneath him.
- Slave to PR: He is overly concerned with his reputation and image. It’s the main obstacle that keeps him from being honest about his feelings.
- Slouch of Villainy: He does this in the credits. You can tell by his posture and grin that he has for a long time looked forward to the day that throne was his.
- Smarter Than You Look: The Prinny that does the commentary in the port for the DS was surprised by Laharl's ample writing skill because… he did not know Laharl knew how to spell.
- Smug Super: Justified in that he really is as good as he says he is.
- Socially Awkward Hero: Laharl would much rather fight monsters than be honest about his feeling, and he often gets into disagreements and feuds with his vassals due to his defensiveness and pride.
- Stripperiffic
- Strong Family Resemblance: Laharl looks like a recolored male version of his mother with antenna, demon ears and angry eyes.
- Subordinate Excuse: It quite obvious that Laharl is fond of Etna; out of all the Demons in the Netherworld her approval of him means the most. Having her as a vassal suits him quite well, as it requires her to be around him, without him having to actually be a friend. Though Etna seems to thinks he just a spoiled brat who only thinks of himself.
- Sweat Drop: When confused.
- Sweet Tooth: Particularly in Disgaea Infinite.
- Food as Bribe: In Prinny 2, it is confirmed he loves snacks and he will even help the Prinnies out in exchange for sweets.
- Take a Third Option: People who have experienced tragic events often look for someone to blame. With that in mind, one could think Laharl would have had about two options after his mother killed herself to save him. One: blame himself for her death. Or Two: blaming his mother for abandoning him. But he chose a third option: he blamed the very feeling that compelled her to do so, love, and repressed it. By doing so, he avoided sorrow and tainting his perfect image of her.
- Take Me Instead!: Laharl offering of his own life to god in exchange for Flonne’s.
- Take Over the World: Laharl wants to take over the Netherworld in order to become the Overlord. He also takes over the Earth in the ”Overthrowing Earth” ending. Taking over Celestia has crossed his mind too.
- Team Prima Donna: Very much so.
- They Call Me Mister Tibbs: "Call me "Your Highness". I am the Overlord now".
- This Is Unforgivable!: Burning Laharl is forgivable; messing with his hair is not! Also classifies as an Ironic Echo, given that Mid-Boss a.k.a. King Krichevskoy said it scenes before.
- To Be a Master: His initial motivation.
- Trash Of The Overlords: In Disgaea Infinite, Laharl's room is described to be incredibly messy. If the Prinnies clean the room, it won’t take long before he messes it up again.
- Tsundere: Type A towards Flonne.
- Tsurime Eyes: A rather glaring one at that.
- Turn the Other Cheek: Laharl is usualy quick to declare minor actions to be unforgivable, but when it turns out that Etna poisoned him in his sleep and used him as bait for her revenge against Maderas, he instantly forgives her after it is over, proclaims that he does not mind that traitorous and selfish aspect of her and that he needs a someone like her to be his right-hand demon.
- Unable to Cry: He claims he is unable to feel sadness and has never cried before. While this could be an example of Unreliable Expositor, when he finally sheds a single tear, he is honestly surprised. This means he has not cried for at least as long as he can remember.
- Single Tear: For Flonne in the Good Ending.
- Unwanted Harem: In the novels, both Gordon and Jennifer’s daughter and Flonne’s little sister are in love with him, and even Etna and Flonne have a crush on him (rather surprising, since whether or not their game counterpart feel this way is VERY debatable). And the list does not end there: the girls and women who want to get into his shorts get more numerous as the novel series goes on, to Laharl's major frustration.
- Used to Be a Sweet Kid: It's hinted that Laharl has not always had the attitude he has now, and was a more loving child when his mother was still alive.
- Villain Song: Ode to Laharl, his theme song. Spoofed: the lyrics are full of deeds that would more easily describe Poking The Poodle instead of Kicking The Dog.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: He apparently prefers to wear his giant scarf over putting on a shirt.
- Warrior Prince: He's a Prince, later Overlord, of the Netherworld, who fights on the front lines against invaders.
- Weaksauce Weakness: He is violently allergic to well-endowed women and optimistic sayings, particularly the phrase "eternal love". He gets over it eventually.
- What Is This Thing You Call Love?: He slowly learns to care about his friends.
- Who Dares?: "What fool dares awaken me, the great Laharl?"
- Who Wears Short Shorts?: Laharl!
- Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: When shocked.
- Yandere: Not him, but a fangirl of his, namely Anise the Cat Witch who is Ax Crazy for him.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Though conisidering he's a demon, this isn't that unusual.
- You Killed My Father: Laharl is said to be in only one who has canonically defeated Baal, and continues to try to defeat him for good in several cameos. Why he bothers is not clear, but what we do know is that Baal was the cause of his father’s death. Interestingly enough, Baal will always show up as a Bonus Boss whenever Laharl makes an appearance.
- Young Conqueror: Switch out regular, "human" idealism with demonic idealism, and more thoughtful strategy with brute-force tactics. Though given that this is Disgaea, Violence Really Is the Answer.

The Lancer and Laharl's second in command. Etna is a demon who has been working at the castle since before the Prince was born and not particularly impressed by his immaturity. She is also highly ambitious and has the tendency to transparently plot Laharl's overthrow, if only to keep him in line.
Tropes associated with Etna:
- A-Cup Angst: She's very insecure about her lack of cleavage.
- Age-Inappropriate Dress: She might be 1470, but she looks no older then 14, so her Stripperiffic black leather outfit is doomed to turn some heads.
- Almighty Janitor: Technically, Etna is considered a "Demon Lord" class; she "hacked" it to "Beauty Queen". However, it is pointed out in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories that her strength is the same as an Overlord's.
- The game actually stores that bit of information as a string. Ergo, you can hack it to say whatever you want.
- Anti-Hero: Almost completely heartless in the beginning, though played for laughs. She mellows a little after she regains her memories.
- Arson, Murder, and Admiration/Arson, Murder, and Lifesaving: "You tried to poison me in my sleep... You used me as bait for your revenge... What kind of vassal are you? ...But! But, I don't mind that side of you. A true demon is always full of ambition and aims for the top. As King, I'll need a right-hand demon like you under my command." Laharl to Etna.
- Bad Boss: Infamously horrible even compared to other demons. Both Yukimaru and Rozalin feel bad for the Prinnies under her command.
- Bare Your Midriff
- Bastard Girlfriend: Her abusive nature toward the Prinnies and anyone who pisses her off is played to add to her overall appeal... but also for laughs.
- Battle Cries: "Drop dead! Punk!" "Call me queen." "Seeya! Go! Drop dead!" "Punk!" "Eat this!".
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Between her and Laharl, especially in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories and Disgaea Infinite.
- Berserk Button: EXCUSE ME FOR BEING FLAT!!
- Don't touch her sweets, especially if your name is Laharl. And if she notices you with her panties...
- Black Bra and Panties: She wears a black bra and, according to the artbook for Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, panties.
- Blade on a Stick: She attacks with spears.
- Bondage Is Bad: "Not that I have a bottle fetish or anything."
- Brilliant but Lazy: Etna is both powerful and wise enough to be the Overlord, but as Etna Mode (where she ultimately decides it is not worth it) and the Prinny games (where she leaves the position open even though Laharl is a Prinny) have exemplifed, is too irresponsible and lacks the drive to do it. She does get the job in the anime and in the normal ending of the game... and then complains about it being so much work!
- Cat Smile: The shape of her mouth when smiling.
- The Chew Toy: When she joins you in the second game. She even remarks that she's had nothing but bad luck after encountering Adell and company.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Etna's diary has some very interesting things to say about Laharl's father and mother...
- Conflicting Loyalty: Etna has great loyalty to King Krichevskoy, so great in fact that it remained with her even when she lost her memory. But she also made a promise to him; to protect Laharl and make sure become a great Overlord, which may or may not be more then Etna can stand.
- Cool Pet: Etna used to have a puppy Mystic Beast, which are basically blue wolf puppies with pink afros. Formally introduced in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories as an actual creatable monster.
- Curtains Match the Window: Bright red hair and bright red eyes.
- Cute Little Fangs
- Dangerously-Short Skirt: Her standard skirt is too mini to even be called a miniskirt.
- Dangerously Genre Savvy
- Dark Action Girl: In the games.
- Deadpan Snarker: Very sarcastic and snarky, at all times.
- Detached Sleeves: When she was little.
- Dragon Ascendant: In some endings, and the end of the anime.
- Evil Is Sexy: She wants to be this in-universe, at least.
- Evil Redhead: Why don't you ask the Prinnies what they think Etna's place on the morality scale is?
- Expressive Accessory: The Prinny bags she has in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories. For example, when Etna is angry, the visible bag will look scared.
- Expressive Ears
- Faux Action Girl: In the anime.
- Femme Fatale: This seems to be the type of woman Etna wants to be, and had she been older-looking she could have been this or The Vamp.
- Fiery Redhead: Especially in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories.
- Fist of Enthusiasm: Etna uses this pose when she is pissed of.
- Friend to All Children: Etna appears to have an easy time befriending children like Aramis and Hanako, and seems to genuinely care about them. This extends to the novels, even though Aramis does not appear in them, where Etna shows concern for Laharl's cousin Shas.
- Girlish Pigtails: If anything, they indicate her nature as a Tsundere and all-around almighty brat.
- Gotta Kill Them All: Etna has a “To Kill List”, guess which character is on the top?[4]
- Green-Eyed Monster: Etna was envious of the unconditional love King Krichevskoy felt for Laharl and even hated him.
I hated the Prince... I envied the Prince...
- Groin Attack: Etna told Flonne about the time she kicked a man "right there" in a passing comment.
- Hairstyle Inertia: Young Etna also had pigtails.
- "Happy Ending" Massage: In Laharl's cameo in Prinny, Etna seems to reference this when she claims that Laharl is going to massage her SO hard, adding in that she might teach him some new tricks. Laharl was currently a Prinny atoning for his sins after a reincarnation.
- She makes a Prinny massage her in the Drama CD as well. If you don't know what is going on, it sounds just like what you would think it would sound like.
- Hell-Bent for Leather: She's always wearing something leather.
- Hellish Pupils
- Her Codename Was Mary Sue: She really loves doing this with her crazy episode previews. Laharl and Vyers provide snark, whereas Flonne plays along and CAPTAIN GORDON, DEFENDER OF EARTH! tries to steal the spotlight.
- Heroic Comedic Sociopath: Etna casually snarks about killing Laharl and endlessly abuses her Prinnies even as she saves the Netherworld.
- Hidden Depths: Etna gets very melancholic while she reminisces about the past and writes in her diary.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: Sure, she'll stab Laharl in the back some day (it's in her job description as a Demon after all), but that aside she's genuinely fond of him and Flonne, who are for all intents and purposes her best friends. Her friendship with Laharl, due to his own Hidden Heart of Gold status, however, often leads to them being Vitriolic Best Buds anyways.
- Laharl's Dad: To King Krichevskoy.
- The Lancer: Quite literally too.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: Maderas targeted and stole all of her memories related to King Krichevskoy and her promise to blackmail her into working for him, while leaving enough information to know they're important to make sure she complies.
- Legal Jailbait
- Little Miss Badass: Her strength is on par with most adult overlords despite being physically and mentally around fourteen at most.
- Little Miss Snarker: Thanks to her upbringing, she is Wise Beyond Her Years and a notable Deadpan Snarker.
- Loving a Shadow: It's pretty clear that Etna adored Laharl’s father, and that she appreciates the moments Laharl acts like him and tries to make Laharl even more like him. One could argue this is because King Krichevskoy was a very good Overlord, and that Etna want Laharl to be the same, but when Etna displays less-than-minimal care for the lives of her unknown/known fellow demons, it makes her conversations with Laharl stand out.
- Magic Skirt: Etna invokes this by belting the skirt to her hips.
- Morality Chain: Without both Laharl and the memories of King Krichevskoy, Etna would be an even more unpleasant person, as shown in Etna Mode. With them around, she's a mere Heroic Comedic Sociopath.
- My Eyes Are Leaking: Etna starts to cry in Etna Mode when she realizes she broke the promise she made to King Krichevskoy because she killed Laharl instead of protecting him, like she promised she would.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Etna get this way when she remembers the promised she made to the King, that she would protect Laharl, in Etna Mode. A milder version happens throughout Etna's diary, when she remembers the promise and expresses guilt for just poisoning Laharl:
Even though my memories were stolen, I still broke my promise to the King... King Krichevskoy... You must be angry with me...
- "On the Next...": Etna voices the between-chapter previews in the first game, often putting herself as the star player.
- Opera Gloves
- Our Vampires Are Different: Her theme song claims she'll sneak to your bedside by night and show you her gleaming fangs and that when she is tired of drinking your blood, she'll throw you away. Averted in that even despite the imagery, she's not really a vampire.
- Panty Shot: On the cover of Takehito Harada's first artbook.
- Parental Substitute: King Krichevskoy.
- Picky Eater: She does not even consider Chilled Noodle Salad to be food.
- Precocious Crush: Flashbacks in Etna mode and entries in her diary reveal that she developed one as a child when King Krichevskoy, the first person to show her kindness, took her in.
- Prehensile Tail: She used it as a third hand in the trailer for the anime.
- Reliable Traitor: According to Laharl.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: 1470 years old.
- The Resenter: Etna used to hate Laharl's mother because of King Krichevskoy's deep feelings for her.
- Sarcastic Devotee: She is the only one of the late king's vassals immediately willing to serve Laharl, and she's quite sarcastic to him, since he's a Royal Brat. Even though she uses him as bait to stop Maderas, she genuinely feels guilty about doing so, since she promised the king, the only person to ever show her kindness, that she'd protect his son.
- In the sequel, she leaves him after a fight, but she returns to him after Flonne gets them to make up and apologize.
- Shipper on Deck: She enjoys teasing Laharl about his feelings for Flonne, and in Disgaea Infinite, goes out of her way to avert a Cannot Spit It Out situation between the two, much to Laharl's annoyance and protests.
- Slave Collar: When she was little.
- The Starscream: She hints at this, at least. Nothing ever comes of it, in part because it'd be too much of a hassle for her to become Overlord.
- In the "Etna Heroine" ending, she kills Maderas, Flonne when she tries attempts to stop her, and later Laharl.
- Stripperiffic: Microtop, Zettai Ryouiki and a Slave Collar.
- Subordinate Excuse: Despite her free-spirited attitude, Etna has lived her life in voluntary servitude. She adored King Krichevskoy, and being Laharl's vassal is good way to keep an eye on him, making sure he doesn't mess up.
- Sweat Drop: When confused.
- Sweet Tooth: Etna has a particularly bad one, especially in Prinny and Disgaea Infinite. Woe to anyone who eats her pudding. She is pretty high-class about sweets too.
- Tears of Remorse: Etna cries at the end of Etna Mode.
- Thigh-High Boots: Her second outfit.
- Token Evil Teammate: In the sequel, since you're playing as heroes there.
- Too Important to Walk: Etna sits on a sedan chair carried by the Prinnies in her boss fight in Prinny.
- Too Many Belts: She has two belts on each boot, one on each arm, and four stitched to her skirt.
- The Trickster: A very capable deceiver who openly questions and mocks authority (unless it is a Reasonable Authority Figure), encourages impulse and enthusiasm, destroys convention and complacency, and promotes chaos and unrest.
- Tsundere: Towards Laharl's father, and maybe to Laharl as well. Unfortunately, it'd be a classic example of Belligerent Sexual Tension. In Disgaea 2, she even acts like a Psycho Ex-Girlfriend after getting into a feud with Laharl.
- "The Villain Sucks" Song: Her theme song "Etna Boogie" calls her a "cruel, cowardly, cold-blooded, heartless, wicked woman."
- Then again, these are the sort of traits that demons admire.
- You Gotta Have Pink Hair: In the first game. She's dyed it red in the sequel.
- What Do You See In Him: Etna asks Flonne this in Disgaea 3 when they start arguing over who gets to be Laharl's "wife" when they pretend to be Mao's parents.
- Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: When shocked.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Grade S.
Flonne
Voiced by: Yuko Sasamoto (JP), Sandy Fox (EN)
"Love Freak" and self appointed Guardian Angel of Laharl. Originally sent to the Netherworld to assassinate the late King Kricheveskoy, she decided to stick around in order to discover if demons were inherently evil. She is generally ditzy and absurdly idealistic, though with a few Berserk Buttons that lead one to wonder just how good she really is. Flonne is also a huge anime and Toku Otaku, so much so that she actually ends up being the most Genre Savvy team member despite not being particularly smart.
Tropes associated with Flonne:
- A-Cup Angst: Pointing her chest out seems to be the only thing that can truly piss her off in the first game.
- Adorkable: "I wanna be a space detective too!"
- And I Must Scream: Being turned into a flower in the ending can be interpreted as this.
- Angelic Beauty
- Apologetic Attacker: "Oops, pardon me!"
- Badass Adorable: An Angel Trainee from Celestia that can fight alonside Laharl and Etna - she qualifies with flying colors.
- Battle Cries: "Lord, give me strength." "Sorry, I won't hold back!" "Ultimate attack! Lord, give me strength." "Get Ready!"
- Berserk Button: The very first time in the games that Flonne ever gets mad is "EXCUSE ME FOR BEING FLAT!!
- She also responds very angrily to being called any variation of "villainess".
- Beware the Nice Ones: She can get quite violent when her patience is pushed too far.
- Blank White Eyes: When confused, along with Sweat Drop.
- Blush Sticker
- Broken Messiah: Flonne does several deeds during the course of the story that are considered less than appropriate for an angel (helping Laharl to become the overlord and beating Gordon, for example). She doesn't realize it's treason against Celestia’s dogma before it’s too late and desperately tries to explain it away, but she doesn’t fool anyone, not even herself.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: She is a very flaky otaku, but she gives Seraph Lamington the results he wants. She continues to be one as an Archangel to the dismay of Artina, who often wonders how the Seraph and the other Archangels accept her behavior.
- Character Exaggeration: Flonne is the victim of this in the novels, see Clingy Jealous Girl below. She also goes so far as to call Laharl a pervert, even though she of all people should know him better. Also, her later game appearances dial-up her otaku-ness.
- Chekhov's Gun: Her pendant.
- The Chick: Par for the course when you are the Love Freak and angel among demons, regardless of the sex ratio.
- The Chosen One: Chosen to unite the Netherworld and Celestia by Seraph Lamington.
- Cleavage Window: Though it goes mostly unnoticed thanks to the size of the window and her breasts.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: In the novels, Flonne is very obviously in love with Laharl. She gets extremely jealous if Laharl gets close to another girl - whether Laharl likes said girl does not matter. A rather jarring difference from her game counterpart, who would do anything to spread love all across the universe and even volunteers to be Laharl and Etna's matchmaker in Disgaea 2. She is still a love freak in the novels, but the universe won’t get Laharl without a fight, it seems.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Made apparent as soon as she meets Laharl.
Flonne: "Nice to meet you! I'm an assassin. Whoops. I wasn't supposed to say that."
- Collector of the Strange: Flonne collects stuff that an Otaku normally collects, such as Toku movies and series, but she also fancies bigger stuff like giant space ships (she claimed Gargantua), space cruisers (the Mk. III) and giant robots (the Great Flonzor X).
- Cosplay Otaku Girl: Go, go, Flonnezilla!
- The Cuckoolander Was Right: All of Flonne’s beliefs are proven to right in the good ending.
- In a more minor example, she apparently believes that ninjas are known for saying "Nin nin nin!". By Disgaea 4, they actually do.
- Cute and Psycho: When she gets angry over something, she bites.
- Cute Little Fangs: As a Fallen Angel.
- The Cutie: Sweet, lovable and innocent.
- Detached Sleeves
- The Ditz: Though in her defense, she is quite capable in battle, her "unconventional" methods tends to work, she's open-minded, understanding, a fairly fast learner and quick to admit her own mistakes when she is proven wrong.
- Does Not Know Her Own Strength: When Flonne gets excited, she has no grasp of her own strength, which is bad news for anyone she gets violent towards while influenced by a strong emotion. It’s a good thing Laharl is Made of Diamond.
- Punched Across the Room: Flonne sends Laharl flying across the room in Disgaea Infinite to prevent him from harming Mr. DVD Player.
- Dumb Blonde: Subverted, she turns out to be right about demons the entire time. Most of her methods of attack relies on intelligence and she will most likely be one of your best mage for most of the game. Also, outside of the original game, where all the plot characters have the same growth, she has a very high intelligence growth. Of course, she IS smarter than she appears anyways.
- Eccentric Mentor: To Artina.
- Elegant Sweet Lolita: Her angel trainee outfit is arguably this; lots of ribbons, corset with embroidery, blouse, collar, detached sleeves, bloomers, golden earrings and Mary Jane shoes.
- Every Proper Lady Should Curtsy: Flonne does this when she meets Laharl for the first time as a goodbye greeting. Spoofed in that it comes just after a promised second attempt at assassinating him.
- Evil Costume Switch: After her fall, her blue hair ribbon is replaced with a red one, and she gains a one-piece swimsuit. Her personality doesn't change along with it. Oh, and she gains fangs like Laharl and the other demons.
- Fallen Angel
- Fan Girl: Any time heroes introduce themselves to fight Laharl, this results in a hilariously gleeful reaction from her.
- Fireball Eyeballs: When she gets ticked off or really excited.
- Fish Out of Water: Gets placed in a world completely unfamiliar to her, but catches on rather quickly and learns many new things.
- Flower Motifs: "How beautiful! *giggle* I love these flowers. They are simple, yet so bright and lovely... I want to be like these flowers...".
- Flying Stick: In La Pucelle: Ragnarok, she uses her wand to fly like if it was a Flying Broomstick.
- The Fundamentalist: Inverted. Flonne actually questions the beliefs the majority of her kind believes in before she came to stand face to face with the "enemy", and takes her sweet time to evaluate the situation when she does.
- Genki Girl: Flonne is usually energetic or enthusiastic, but not exceedingly like most Genki Girl.
- The Glomp: In the Drama CD, Flonne practices to a recital, but when it's time, no one shows up. She is driven to tears, but sings her heart out even without an audience. When she's done, someone starts to clap. Turns out Laharl and Etna came after all. This touches her so greatly, that she starts to cry tears of joy and glomp Laharl as hard as she can.
- Glurge Addict: Show hints of this, especially when Laharl mentions bluntly that his father is dead, and she starts to cry.
- Good Costume Switch: From her Fallen Angel outfit to her angel trainee outfit in Disgaea Infinite and to her Archangel outfit in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Go Through Me: In Etna The Heroine Ending, Flonne tries to protect Maderes in this manner from Etna. It does not go well for her.
- Hair Decorations: Her bow really adds to her cuteness.
- Hair of Gold: Especially notable in a universe where You Gotta Have Blue Hair, hers stands out as extremely vibrant.
- The Heart: Or at least she tries to be, with varied results.
- Heart Beat-Down: Her healing spell Power of Love and attack skill Holy Arrows which is a volley of explosive arrows shaped like hearts when she is a Fallen Angel.
- Hey, You: Laharl doesn't address her by her name until a certain plot point.
- Highly-Visible Ninja: Flonne spends much of her introductory assassination attempt pretending to be a ninja. A ninja that says sound effects out loud.
- Hime Cut
- Hollywood Tone Deaf: In the Drama CDs, Laharl likens Flonne's singing to being murdered.
- Holy Child: Seraph Lamington thinks she is the key to Celestia's future and that she will heal Laharl's heart and together they will reunite Celestia and the Netherworld. Vulcanus is jealous of the high thoughts the Seraph has for her and tirelessly tries to have her killed. In the canon ending, he's proven right.
- Holy Hand Grenade: Her special moves "Holy Arrows" and "Divine Ray".
- Horrible Judge of Character: In regards to Etna. Even though Etna plays tricks on her, she refuses to see Etna's more wicked characteristics. Though Flonne is not without reason because Etna does make sure to hide things from her, as Flonne is a Morality Pet to her and Flonne would get on her case if she found out about her deeds, like how much Etna really pays the Prinnies.
- Hot-Blooded: Flonne is very passionate about love and heroism, especially in her Trinity Universe cameo.
- Humongous Mecha: Her Great Flonzor X in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Implied Death Threat: Her treat to Laharl that she will assassinate him if demons are really incapable of love.
And if necessary… I’ll carry out my original mission with a new target!
- Asshole Victim: In Flonne’s Tragedy Ending, she follows up on this claim and defeats Laharl with her blazing flame of justice because he tried to kill Hoggmeiser.[5]
- Implied Love Interest: In the Bad Ending, Laharl sacrifices his life to restore Flonne before coming back as a Prinny; other endings have this to a lesser degree. This isn't taking into account the massive amounts of Ship Tease, even including Lamington himself.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: She's every bit as innocent as she looks. Even when she becomes a demon she stays as innocent as ever.
- Informed Attribute: She may not look it, but her breasts are as big as Rin Tohsaka's as stated in The World of Disgaea book (77 metric).
- The Ingenue: A competent one who can take care of herself.
- Innocent Blue Eyes: In contrast to the cynical Laharl and Wtna, who have red eyes, Flonne is innocent and sweet with blue eyes.
- Insistent Terminology: "It's not a DVD, it's a Blu-ray!"
- Interspecies Friendship: With Laharl and Etna.
- Japanese Pop Cultured Badass
- Kill the Cutie: In most endings. Sometimes subverted, sometimes not.
- The Klutz: Laharl and Etna thinks she is this, but she has never been shown doing something extremely clumsy (though she does occasionally say "Pardon me!" when attacking, so the statements tend to be more about the thoughts that goes through her head rather than her physical slip-ups.
- Large Ham: Can be rather passionate about the power of love, especially in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Leotard of Power: Her outfit as an Fallen Angel.
- Lethal Chef: In the manga and the anime. Her cooking skills in the games are never really mentioned, but when it's only Laharl and Flonne in the Overlord's Castle in Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, their diet consisted of potato chips, instant ramen, and canned tuna, implying that Flonne may not know how to cook.
- Through His Stomach: In the Disgaea 2 Drama CD, Flonne tries to make Etna help her cook Laharl a meal since he’s so hungry and so that he and Etna can finally make amends. Etna refuses, so Flonne turns to Rozalin for help.
- Love Angel: She keeps calling herself this.
- Love Bubbles: Such bubbles surround Flonne and Laharl in Disgaea Infinite after Laharl congratulates Flonne for passing an angel promotion test, which she is extremely touched by.
- Love Freak: The original! We'd say 'accept no substitutes', but Flonne would want you to be accepting of others.
- Love Triangle: In the Disgaea 2 Drama CD, Flonne also declares that it has become a Love Triangle between Laharl, Etna and Adell, and the reason Etna does not want to come home with Laharl is that Etna and Adell are a couple. Etna runs along with it.
- Magical Girl Warrior: Flonne imagines herself to be this, calling herself Guardian Flonne and Justice Flonne.
- Magikarp Power: Give her a staff and load her up with healing and elemental spells through the Mentor system, and she becomes perhaps more powerful and useful than Laharl.
- But don't rely on her too much on the first playthrough, given that she gets removed from your party for the last story boss.
- Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Love Angel Flonne has descended from the heavens to teach you (Laharl) the importance of love!
- Messianic Archetype: Lamington seems to think that Flonne is this, and she does indeed pass a lot of the qualifications, but whether or not she will live up to these expectations remains to be seen.
- Moe Stare: Her default expression.
- Morality Pet: Acts as one to Etna, and later Laharl.
- Naive Newcomer: In the beginning when she joins the team.
- Nice Girl: Loving, caring and helpful.
- Nice to the Waiter: According to Disgaea Infinite, she is especially nice to the Prinnies, who in turn have formed an unofficial fan club.
- No Sense of Direction: She got lost on her way home to Celestia once.
- One Head Taller: Flonne is exactly one head taller then Laharl.
- Otaku: Flonne is apparently a big fan of ninjas and Kaiju.
- Our Angels Are Different
- Parental Substitute: Arguably Lamington. Flonne got parents of her own in the novels, but this is never mentioned in the game. He talks about her with great pride and fate, and the game shows she had permission to speak to him casually, even though she is a mere angel trainee, and he is no less then the Seraph.
- Percussive Maintenance: Flonne started smacking Mr. DVD-player mightily in Disgaea Infinite when it would play her Blu-ray Disc while cheering "Come on, Mr. DVD Player! You can do it!".
- Pimped-Out Dress: Her archangel outfit; lots of ribbons, collar, mantelet, sleeves, several layers of petticoats, the inmost has golden heart embroidery, heart earrings and elegant sandals.
- Plucky Girl: When the going gets tough, Flonne might grow sceptical, but she always tackles the challenge head-on anyway.
- The Pollyanna: No matter what happens to her, she never gives up her ideals.
- The Power of Love: Flonne is a big believer in this and even has a healing skill of the same name.
- Pretty Freeloader: Flonne is not often referred to as Laharl's vassal (despite Laharl forcibly conscripting her into the role after her failed assassination attempt), she lives at Overlord's castle free of charge, and her needs are taken care of by the Prinnies, which she feels bad about, as mentioned in Prinny 2.
- Rank Up: From Disgaea 3 Raspberyl Mode, Disgaea 4 and out is Flonne the new Archangel, replacing Vulcanus.
- Rapunzel Hair: Even moreso in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, where her hair seems to have grown quite a bit.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: 1509 years old.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Flonne telling off Vulcanus in a lengthy Kirk Summation, to the applause of Laharl, Etna and the Earth Defense Force.
- Reluctant Warrior: She hates fighting, and only does so when it's necessary to help Laharl.
- Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right: Flonne’s ultimate decision. See To Be Lawful or Good below.
- Ship Tease: Quite a bit in the first game with Laharl. The fact that Mid Boss claims Laharl and Flonne to be the knot that binds the Netherworld and Celestia helps.
- In The World of Disgaea books 1 and 2, the relationship between them is described as “Loves?” Tease indeed.
- And the Disgaea novels take it even further.
- In Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories, Laharl’s eyes tear up when Flonne stays behind with the Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories crew instead of coming with him. In Disgaea Infinite, Laharl is upset that Flonne might be leaving the Netherworld (though he is in denial about it).
- Angel Demon Shipping: Literally.
- Who could forget the final battle of the original game. Laharl goes into an Unstoppable Rage after he believes that Flonne is dead and can potentially kill the one responsible for it. Whether he strikes the final blow or not determines whether you get the Good Ending or the "normal ending".
- Also of note is the opening theme of the anime adaptation "Aishitageru", when translated into English, several things become clear. 1. It's obviously sung from her Point of View. 2. She admits she loves Laharl and sees past his Jerkass Facade. 3. Considers their meeting "a miracle". Who knows whether this will ever carry over into the games though, much less anything else.
- Sitcom Arch Nemesis: Arguably, Laharl is hers. His hate for love does rub her the wrong way, and their disagreement is a source of comedy.
- Smarter Than You Look: Flonne proves, several times throughout the game, to be smarter than what her initial introduction would have have the other characters believe.
Hm...S, So you do get it.—A surprised Laharl to Flonne
- Spin Attack: Flonne can do this on a jump stick.
- Spirited Young Lady: She is physically and mentally 15, at least middle class, confident, not as dumb as you think she is, a hardcore Toku Otaku, independent, self-sufficient, honest and has a defiant side, but tries her best to be lawful.
- Stupid Good: Her nickname should clue you in.
- Super Sentai Stance: Flonne tries to do this with Laharl and Etna in the picnic episode; they complain about her enthusiasm and after being forced to participate fail horribly, much to Flonne's dismay.
- Sweat Drop: When confused.
- Tareme Eyes: To counter Laharl’s Tsurime Eyes.
- Thinking Out Loud: Flonne thinks loudly about her moral dilemma of whether or not assassinating someone she know/don't know is alright.
- To Be Lawful or Good: Flonne decides over the course of the games if she is going to be a dutiful angel and follow the laws of Celestia, or if she is going to fight for the rights and recognition of demons and humans to be considered equals to angels. She settles on the latter and fights for it even at the cost of her life.
- Token Good Teammate: She originally joins Laharl's group to understand demons and teach them about love.
- Toku: Flonne is a huge fan.
- Tsundere: Type B towards Laharl.
- Was Actually Friendly: Flonne finds out that demons are not as bad as the other angels would have her believe, though she had her doubts to begin with.
- White Magician Girl: Skilled with staves and usually learns healing and support magic.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: Flonne endlessly espouses The Power of Love and believes that deep downs all demons are capable of good.
- Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: When shocked.
- Wingding Eyes: Her eyes bursts into flames when she is all fired up, and into empty circles when she becomes confused.
- Woman in White: White outfit and very important, yet a very Nice Girl.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: It's rather obvious that Flonne has been watching way too many Hero/Ninja/Giant-monster shows.
- You Are Worth Hell: By the end of the first game, Flonne's life is even worth Prinnydom to Laharl.
Mid-Boss/Vyers
a.k.a. King Krichevskoy.
Voiced by: Chihiro Suzuki (JP), Grant George (EN)
The foppish, self-proclaimed "Dark Adonis" who has a penchant for random French, Vyers was quickly dubbed "Mid-Boss" by Laharl just before he had his ass handed to him in a humiliating defeat. He appears at the most inopportune times to challenge Laharl and regain some semblance of dignity. Overall, he appears to be a total ditz, though he may know more than he lets on...
Tropes associated with Mid-Boss:
- Adorkable: He's awkward and silly, but it just makes him more endearing and memorable.
- Angelic Beauty: After his ascension in the novels.
- Agent Peacock: Especially in his past life.
- An Ice Person: Back when he was Krichevskoy.
- Anti-Villain: Type IV. In fact, by Disgaea standards, he practically fits every hero qualification the book in most regards save being on an opposing side to the playable characters.
- Ascended Demon: He becomes one in the novels.
- Badass Cape: King Krichevskoy had a nice red cape.
- Badass Mustache: King Krichevskoy had a small, defined and well groomed dali mustache.
- Baddie Flattery: He's very personable and friendly, and regularly compliments the party.
- Battle Cries: "En Garde! Ha! But of course." "Right there" "Gotche!" "Haaahahahaha!".
- Benevolent Boss: In his past life.
- Berserk Button: Vyers does not like his new name.
- Berserker Tears: When his wife killed herself, he split the earth in half in grief.
- Bishonen: He is very effeminate and beautiful. His title as "The Dark Adonis" is right up this trope.
- Blade on a Stick: King Krichevskoy was a spear user. This changes in Disgaea 4, where he has proficiency in swords and fists.
- Bumbling Dad: King Krichevskoy was a respectable and great man overall according to those that knew him, but when he is acting as the Dark Adonis, he evidently turn himself into this.
- Butt Monkey: Though there are hints he purposely plays this up. Later confirmed when we find out he was in league with Lamington the whole time.
- Camp Straight: Though it may just be part of his facade, if the fact that he's fathered a son is anything to go by... On the other hand, even as Laharl's father, he was known to be rather flamboyant and somewhat effeminate in manner by demon standards.
- Cape Wings: His jacket is his wings. According to The World of Disgaea artbook, King Krichevskoy’s cape was his wings as well.
- The Chew Toy: He only appears to be beat up and sent packing in a humiliating fashion.
- Cultured Badass: He is, after all, a gentleman, and as King Krichevskoy, he was even more sophisticated and badass.
- The Dandy: Very foppish and silly.
- Distracted by My Own Sexy: According to the Prinny Times, Vyers likes to stare into his mirror asking who’s the most adonic of them all.
- Doppleganger Attack: Seems to be a signature ability of his. His Adonic Fury, his signature skill, summons three other copies of himself to gang up on a single foe while his Super Adonis from Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice creates numerous copies that all magichange into a swords for him to throw. Apparently, it is an ability that Krichevskoy had that carried over when he became Vyers. In Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten, he has a suped-up version of Adonic Fury and before the fight, he creates three doppelgangers to aid him.
- Doting Parent: We never see Laharl spend much time with Krichevskoy, but according to Etna, he thought of Laharl’s best until the very end, even though Laharl outright claimed he hated his old man. He also held great faith in Laharl, going so far as to put Etna and Flonne in charge of looking out for him to ensure that he succeeds, even after his death.
- Enemy Eats Your Lunch: He ate the picnic basket.
- Enigmatic Minion: After being defeated, he continues to hound Laharl and his group. What is he up to? The secret is a major story spoiler.
- Estrogen Brigade Bait
- Everything Sounds Sexier in French: "They call moi the Dark Adonis".
- Evil Eyebrows: Subverted: he's not a pillar of demonic atrocity.
- Exactly What It Says on the Tin: His name is Mid-Boss, and he's a Mid-Boss. Simple, really.
- Expository Hairstyle Change: Has re-acquired the Hair Antennae after reclaiming his identity as Krichevskoy in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Expy: Vyers' personality and looks are very similar to that of Crowdia from Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.
- Failing As A Father Is The Only Option: King Krichevskoy and Laharl did not seems to connect, which probably made it difficult to teach Laharl all the important stuff a father should teach his son. Solution? Act like a unknown doofus and beat the knowledge right into his skull!
- A Father to His Men: His most loyal vassals have quite fond memories of King Krichevskoy, he seems to have meant alot to them.
- Feather Motif: In his cameo in Phantom Brave and his appearance as DLC in Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice, Vyers shows in a soft explosion of white feathers. It fits with his ascension in the novels, even though it never happend officially in the games.
- The Fighting Narcissist: He's completely full of himself and has a high opinion of his own beauty.
- Full-Frontal Assault: In Disgaea 3, Vyers has a evility by the name of "Naked" that makes him gain twice as much experience when he is not equipped with any items. Take that as you will.
- The Good King: King Krichevskoy was kind, honorable and well-intentioned.
- The Wise King: He also seems to have an aura of melancholy surrounding him in Laharl and Etna's flashback.
- Gratuitous French Phrases: In both audio tracks.
- Guile Hero: He has some elements of this, having the back of Lamington in his Batman Gambit and all. Even his Disgaea 3 description states that he is extremely influential.
- Hair Antennae/Princess Curls: King Krichevskoy's antennas were shaped like princess curls at the tip. He regains longer ones in Disgaea 4.
- Hand Behind Head: Vyers does this when he is badly injured, along with Instant Bandages.
- Hero Antagonist: He's working towards benevolent ends, but reaching them involves acting like Laharl's enemy.
- Hot Dad: As he constantly proclaims himself to be.
- I Let You Win: Vyers makes up petty excuses to end fights with Laharl, allowing him to win and get stronger.
- And if the loss is truly on his side, count on it being due to his bad case of acid reflux or severe constipation.
- Insistent Terminology: "The daaaark Adonis!!"
- Instant Bandages: His bust after losing.
- Interrupted Suicide: When he stops Laharl from from trading up his life to revive Flonne in the Good Ending.
- Subverted when he tried and failed to stop his wife from trading in her life to save Laharl.
- Interspecies Friendship: With Lamington.
- Interspecies Romance: His wife, Laharl's Mom, was a human witch who came to the Netherworld to study.
- Lampshade Hanging: His name.
- Large Ham: 'HAAAHAHAHAHAHA!
- Last Request: As Krichevskoy was dying, he asked Etna to raise his son to become the next overlord, a request that's difficult for her to stomach, but ultimately achieves.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's gorgeous.
- Love At First Sight: With Laharl’s mother, according to Etna.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: He's the reincarnation of King Krichevskoy, Laharl's father.
- Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex: King Krichevskoy had the power to knock down mountains, froze oceans and split the ground in two, while his wife was a human witch trainee.
- Mayfly-December Romance: We never get to know how old King Krichevskoy is, but he is a long time friend of Seraph Lamington who is 9147 years old, and Krichevskoy does not look younger than him. He got married to a human girl who looked no older then 20.
- Meaningful Name: He's a demon who is "vying" for the throne, hence the name "Vyers".
- Mid Boss: Subverted (ironically), he is really a Boss.
- Mistaken for Pedophile: In the manga.
- My Name Is Not Mid-Boss
- Mysterious Parent: He's got some 'interesting' parenting methods.
- Narcissist: ”O flowers! O trees! O grass! Come, celebrate my strength!”
- Nice Guy: So pure that Flonne's pendant, which burns anyone with evil in their hearts leaves him completely unharmed, while it nearly roasts her master Vulcanus, ironically an angel, when he tried to hold it.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: He is not the foppish moron he seems. Laharl catches on by the end of the game.
- Petal Power: His Adonic Blast.
- Phrase Catcher: Nearly everyone that meets him pins him as some sort of mid-boss, regardless of whether or not they've heard the nickname before. This changes in Disgaea 4, probably because he finally dropped the act and got his power back.
- Physical God: In his past life, as Overlord Krichevskoy.
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Polite Villains, Rude Heroes: Vyers tries his very best to invoke this while talking to Laharl and co., but he is unable to keep his cool when they call by his new nickname. They proceed to exploit this as much as they can.
- Promoted to Unlockable: In PSP port of Disgaea 2.
- Quirky Miniboss Squad/Goldfish Poop Gang
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old
- Recurring Boss: Is fought several times throughout the game.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: This goes for practically every noble character in the series, but King Krichevskoy especially as he did much more when just fight, he created the Dark Assembly and fought for equality between every creature, he even died protecting his world from Baal by sealing him.
- Satan Is Good: Satan is never mentioned in the Disgaea series, but the closest physical equivalent are the Overlords, and Overlord Krichevskoy was not only good but also a longtime friends with the physical God equivalent Seraph Lamington. Amusingly, Lamington and possibly Krichevskoy both answer to God.
- Second Love: As Krichevskoy in the novels.
- Set the World on Fire: Occurs during his third special in Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten.
- Sharp-Dressed Man: Not in the usual since, but King Krichevskoy was a rather well, if not strangely, dressed man.
- Simple Staff: King Krichevskoy was suppose to have a staff shaped like a long rose according to The World of Disgaea artbook.
- Small Name, Big Ego: Subverted, as the incompetence is a facade. The ego, on the other hand, sticks around even after he drops the act.
Vyers: Why am I so awesome?
- Something About a Rose: He has a rose pattern on the back of his jacket, and rose petals blow in the wind then he does one of his special attacks. Even more so as King Krichevskoy, who had a rose ring and a rose staff, according to The World of Disgaea artbook.
- Spy Catsuit: Subverted with King Krichevskoy, completed with Combat Stilettos and antenna shaped like Princess Curls, and he is still manages to be Estrogen Brigade Bait.
- Stealth Mentor: He does what he does to help spur Laharl's Character Development into a Noble Demon.
- Stripperiffic: His "shirt" amounts to a vest with long sleeves.
- Talking Weapon: Krichevskoy's weapon, Longinus the talking spear.
- Tall, Dark and Handsome: It suits King Krichevskoy the most, but Vyers isn’t shabby either.
- This Is Unforgivable!: He loves his new name. Really.
- Together in Death: Vyers is seen ascending with the soul of Laharl's mom in the Good Ending. This is subverted since Vyers keeps appearing as a cameo in different NIS games, while Laharl's Mom is nowhere to be seen or heard from. In the novels, this happens in a similar way.
- Took a Level in Badass: As of Disgaea 4, he has regained the power he had as Krichevskoy and is going by his former name.
- "Wake-Up Call" Boss: Although he's treated as a joke by most of the characters, the first boss fight against him is not a walk in the park, especially if you're under leveled.
- Walking Shirtless Scene: His outfit leaves his chest eternally bare.
- The Watcher: He could do much more to help you than he does, but leaves things to Laharl.
- Younger Than They Look: Physically, he can't be more than two years old. Of course, King Krichevskoy was much older.
- Your Eyes Can Deceive You: Vyers' "advice" to Laharl in the Maderas chapter.
Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!
Voiced by: Nobuo Tobita (JP), Michael McConnohie (EN)
On Earth, he was a courageous and celebrated hero that descends from a long line of equally courageous and celebrated heroes. In the Netherworld, he's Laharl's recently acquired and usually mistreated slave thanks to an ill-placed bet on his victory. Even so, Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! is a Hot-Blooded Large Ham with a complete inability to keep quiet. As such, he will give his all in anything he does.
Tropes associated with Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!:
- Badass Normal: Gameplay-wise, he's really good with an axe and has some powerful skills, but within the story, he tends to be dismissed quite easily. It's implied in the boss fight against him that Laharl actually had to work at beating him harder than expected, however.
- The Big Guy: He's handy with axes to rach up huge damage.
- Blue Eyes
- Boisterous Bruiser: He's always got an upbeat speech ready for whatever situation presents itself, peppered with "Ha-ha-haaa!"'s.
- Butt Monkey: Gordon pretty much exists to be humiliated and made fun of.
- Calling Your Attacks: He punctuates his unique moves with "Gordon Finish!".
- Captain Ersatz, Pretender of... you get the idea.
- Captain Space, Defender of Earth!: The Trope Namer.
- The Ditz: Etna comments on his lack of intelligence, comparing his intelligence with that of a rock.
- The Good Captain
- Hot-Blooded: Gordon is endlessly shouting, hammy, and eager to defend the earth.
- Justice Will Prevail: He even says so in his ultimate move.
- Lantern Jaw of Justice: Has a prominently square jaw to emphasize his status as a stock pulp hero.
- Large Ham: Loud, boisterous and dramatic.
- Lord Error-Prone
- Made A Vassal: By Laharl.
- Meat Shield: He's bulky enough to hold choke points.
- No Indoor Voice: Even his relatively normal voice is quite loud and boisterous.
- Repeatedly Used On This Very Wiki: Whenever his name is mentioned here at All The Tropes (and originally on TV Tropes, it is always in Bold Inflation and (usually) with his full title. This treatment eventually inspired similar usage for certain other characters on this very wiki.
- Shout-Out: Pretty much a blatant copy of Flash Gordon.
- Small Name, Big Ego: His ego rivals even Laharl's, but his powers does not.
- Trademark Favorite Food: He loves his pizza.
- Twinkle Smile: Has one in his portrait.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Chapter 12: when the EDF arrives to conquer the Netherworld, Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! stubbornly holds the assumption that they came to rescue the Defenders of Earth despite the overwhelming evidence of them being used, and when Jennifer tried to directly warn him, he instead decides to dismiss Jennifer as his Assistant (causing Jennifer's Heroic BSOD) only to completely regret it a few moments later.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: He is afraid of cockroaches.
Jennifer
Voiced by: Chiwa Saitou (JP), Paula Tiso (EN)
Sidekick of Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! Jennifer is busty, blonde, scantily clad and, against the rest of the group's expectations, brilliant. Jennifer is thoroughly skilled in subjects ranging from Robotics to Martial Arts and generally serves as the brains for Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! Though technically in the same predicament as he, Jennifer seems to have gotten the much better deal out of it, likely because Laharl vehemently refuses to stand within five feet of her. As such, she seems to enjoy pushing Laharl's buttons and is something of a Cool Big Sis for Flonne and Etna. Considering her initial talk of tentacle demons, she seems to have a rather dirty mind.
Tropes associated with Jennifer:
- Anal Probing: Jennifer ask Laharl and co. if the demons (who basically are aliens in the Disgaea universe) anal probed them.
- Badass Normal: Like Gordon, she's just a normal human from Earth, but she can throw down with extra-dimensional demons.
- Bare Your Midriff: Between her bikini top and shorts, her stomach and upper torso are fully visible.
- Blue Eyes
- Boobs of Steel
- Brainless Beauty: Subverted, she's anything but brainless.
- Buxom Is Better: Laharl calls Jennifer sexy specifically because she got big breasts, subverted trope because he does not think it makes her better at all.
- Character Exaggeration: In the anime, her Gainaxing tendencies are greatly exaggerated.
- Cool Big Sis: To the rest of the party, as she sees them as children who need a big sister to take care of them.
- Covert Pervert: Fanon has her as this, due to a single comment she made about being molested by Naughty Tentacles.
- Dumb Blonde: Subverted. She looks and acts like one, but she's actually The Smart Girl and just happens to be a Bunny Ears Lawyer.
- Genius Bruiser: She's not just a physical powerhouse, she's also a scientist.
- Hair of Gold
- Hello, Nurse!
- Heroic BSOD: The result of Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!'s What the Hell, Hero? moment. She gets better soon after Kurtis' Heroic Sacrifice.
- Hot Scientist: She's a scientist who also walks around in little clothing to show off her buxom body.
- Hypercompetent Sidekick: The plot makes her out to be stronger than Gordon, among all the other things she does better than him.
- Mad Generals Beautiful Daughter: She is adopted though.
- Ms. Fanservice: She's very busty and curvy, and walks around in shorts and a bikini top.
- Phenotype Stereotype: American? Most likely (in the novels, they do live in America). Blond hair and blue eyes? Duh.
- Shipper on Deck: In the game and anime, Jennifer has shown shades of this regarding Laharl's relationship with Flonne. In Disgaea Infinite, however, she takes it Up to Eleven by being a shipper for almost every demon who passes by her.
- In the novels, she quite noticeably ships Laharl and Flonne, even though her own daughter is in love him.
- Smarter Than You Look: She "obtained every PHD by the age of ten", though her appearance wouldn't give you that impression.
- The Smart Guy
- Stripperiffic: Shorts and a bikini top.
- The Talk: She likes teaching sex-ed, according to Prinny 2.
- She tries to give Laharl The Talk in the original game, just flustering Laharl worse.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: She hates Sea Cucumbers according to Disgaea Infinite. Given the above, take that as you will...
Thursday
Voiced by: Yurika Ochiai (JP), Bob Papenbrook (EN, PlayStation 2 version only)
A multi-purpose super robot built by Jennifer at the age of 5. Ultra-powerful (in gameplay, too) and able to provide whatever service the characters might need at a given time.
Tropes associated with Thursday:
- Back from the Dead: Or rather, the permanently offline.
- Day of the Week Name: For whatever reason, he's called "Thursday".
- Deadpan Snarker: Because it doesn't get more deadpan than a robot voice.
- Do-Anything Robot: He's a multi-purpose robot, after all.
- Green Lantern Ring
- I Can Still Fight: He refuses to stand by while his friends are fighting, no matter what condition he's in.
- My Sensors Indicate You Want to Tap That: Provided the page quote.
- Robot Buddy: To the human duo of Gordon and Jennifer.
- Verbal Tic: BEEP BEEP BLIP BEEP.
Kurtis
Voiced by: Kousuke Toriumi (JP), Jamieson Price (EN, games), David Lodge (EN, anime)
Described on the main page as "a big ball of tropes, delivered one right after the other." Gets very little time during this game, but plays a bigger role in Cursed Memories.
Tropes associated with Kurtis:
- Anti-Villain: Type III -> type IV.
- The Atoner
- Back from the Dead: As a prinny, anyway.
- The Cavalry
- Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Inverted: he modified his body with robotic parts, but only after he crossed the Despair Event Horizon.
- Dead Little Sister
- Expy: Very clearly based on Jet Link (a.k.a. Cyborg 002) from Cyborg 009.
- Gag Nose: It's a family trait, inherited from the ORIGINAL Defender of Earth, as he's his descendant.
- Heel Face Turn
- Hollywood Cyborg: He became one after surviving an explosion.
- Knight of Cerebus: As opposed to most of the other characters, his scenes lack a lot of the comic relief the others do, which goes well with his status as one of the most Genre Savvy characters.
- The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Feels this way towards Gordon since It's Personal.
- Parody Sue: Laharl and Etna quickly catch on. For bonus irony, he's basically everything Gordon has the mannerisms for, but does far more competently, but with less reknown.
- Redemption Equals Death
- The Rival: To Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth!
- Rocket Punch
- Taking the Bullet
- Troperiffic: Kurtis is basically almost every trope associated with The Rival crammed into one. Laharl and Etna even try to subvert some of the tropes only to be rebuked by Flonne and Gordon.
- Why Couldn't You Save Them?: His Start of Darkness. his family was killed in a terrorist attack, and even though Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! caught the ones responsible, the fact that Gordon couldn't prevent the tragedy made Kurtis decide to become a better Defender of Earth than Captain Gordon, Defender of Earth! could. No matter what...
- You Gotta Have Green Hair
Seraph Lamington
Voiced by: Majima Junji (JP), Jamieson Price (EN)
Leader of Celestia. Sends Flonne on an assassination mission targeting the overlord knowing that he was already dead. Hilarity Ensues.
Tropes associated with Seraph Lamington:
- Angelic Beauty
- The Atoner: He accepts his fate at Laharl's hands due to his actions at the end. Of course, said fate is not necessarily bad.
- Battle Cries: "Thy will be done." "Forgive me, oh Lord."
- Big Good: As the leader of Celestia and all angels who seeks peace between them and the Netherworld.
- Bishonen: A handsome man with a youthful appearance in spite of his age and position.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: While Laharl invades in the manga, he's busy baking cookies.
- The Chessmaster: A rare good one. The entire plot is essentially a giant Batman Gambit to bring peace between Celestia and the Netherworld. He's even smart enough to use the evil schemes of his treacherous right hand man which he knew about the whole time as part of his plan.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome
- Eccentric Mentor: He acts in the best interests of Flonne and Laharl, but in very roundabout ways and in the meantime can seem a bit spaced-out.
- Final Boss: The last challenge in the first game's main campaign.
- Good Is Not Dumb
- Guile Hero: Most famous example from Nippon Ichi.
- Hero Antagonist: In the final level, his true nature as a good person are revealed, but turning Flonne into a flower prompts Laharl to unleash his wrath on the Seraph.
- Hidden Depths: MUCH smarter than he looks, see Chessmaster above.
- Hime Cut
- Horrible Judge of Character: Inverted in regard to Vulcanus.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's very handsome and has hair down to his legs.
- Nerves of Steel: Even if his plans fail or his life is threatened, his response will be calm.
- Omniscient Morality License
- Power Floats: Lamington floats slightly above the ground.
- Rapunzel Hair: His hair reaches down to his ankles.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: 9147 years old.
- The Stoic: Polite and never raises his voice, ever.
- Teleporters and Transporters: He never walks, he just teleports, both in and out of battle.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: He pretty much is one.
Vulcanus
Voiced by: Hironori Miyata (JP), Bob Papenbrook (EN, PlayStation 2 version only)
The main villain of the game. An angel, albeit an extremely ugly one. Has very little tolerance for Flonne's screw-ups, and insists on correcting them himself.
Tropes associated with Vulcanus:
- Battle Cries: "Hah." "Heh heh heh heh heh." "I am justice."
- Big Bad: While not the final boss of the main game, he's very much the main villain of the story.
- Demonization: He does this to demons, who are not even nearly as bad as he thinks they are.
- Evil Chancellor: He is the Archangel, second-in-command to Seraph Lamington and Supreme Commander of the Celestial Hosts. He also got a god complex, is politically incorrect and Obviously Evil.
- Evil Laugh: Very prone to letting out loud, booming laughter.
- The Fundamentalist: Him (and many other angels apparently).
- God Guise: Vulcanus pretends to be God to influence Flonne to go after Etna in Etna Mode.
- A God I Will Be: His plan. Naturally, the protagonists mock him for it.
- Good Hair, Evil Hair: The Mustache Of Evil.
- Humiliation Conga: He gets turned into a flower (or a frog in the anime, take your pick) by Seraph Lamington in the end.
- Knight Templar: He is absolute in his belief that demons are foul scum of evil that must be destroyed.
- Large Ham: Every word that comes out of this guys mouth is over the top and dripping with delicious cheesiness.
- Let's You and Him Fight: This is Vulcanus plan for Laharl and co. and the Seraph after they have defeated him.
- Light Is Not Good: He's an angel, but is also the main antagonist.
- Meaningful Name: Tied in with Theme Naming, as he doesn't share the cake naming patterns of the angels, but references the volcano names of the demons. Because, well, he's more like a demon than an angel.
- Obviously Evil: All of the characters comment on how obvious it is that that is the face of a villain. Laharl even says he'd make a good vassal if he wasn't an angel.
- Politically-Incorrect Villain: He thinks all demons are evil, humans are weak and pathetic and angels are superior in every way.
- Prophet Eyes: Lacks pupils in his eyes compared to most of the characters. The anime adaptation gives him black pupils.
- Unwitting Pawn: Everyone in Lamington's Batman Gambit, but Vulcanus is the biggest one.
Aramis
Voiced by: ? (JP), ? (EN)
Aramis is a resident child in the Netherworld whom Etna manipulates to make Laharl prove himself worthy of ruling. He owns many pet zombies. His favorite among them is a special combination of many parts.
Tropes associated with Aramis:
- Blush Sticker
- Bratty Half-Pint
- Cat Smile: It's up side down.
- Cool Pets: I whole bunch of zombies.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Recurring Extra: In the Prinny games.
- Slave Collar
- You Gotta Have Pink Hair
Big Sis Prinny
Voiced by: Kaori Mizuhashi (JP), Paula Tiso (EN)
A mysterious red Prinny that works in the Overlord's castle, usually seen tending to the other prinnies. She's actually Laharl's dead mother.
Tropes associated with Big Sis:
- The Atoner: All Prinnies are, but Big Sis really feels bad about what happened.
- But Now I Must Go: The end of Episode 8.
- Cool Big Sis: Her status among Laharl and Etna's Prinnies.
- Curtains Match the Window: Had brown hair and eyes when she was alive.
- Cute Witch: Was one in life.
- Divine Date: Her marriage to King Krichevskoy.
- Heroic Sacrifice: The sin that turned her into a Prinny.
- Love Freak: According to Etna, she was lecturing Laharl about love before Flonne appeared on the scene.
- The Power of Love: She was only able to save Laharl's life because she loved him.
- Rose Skinned Prinny
- Take Me Instead!: Her death was because Laharl became so ill, even the King couldn't cure him. She took her own life to save her son.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: She is pink and got eyelashes; she is most definitely a girl.
- Unnamed Parent
- Verbal Tic: She doesn't have one. When Flonne points this out, she quickly forces them in.
- Woman in White: Her human form's outfit.
- Who Wears Short Shorts?: Again, her human form.
- ↑ Laharl was born of the Queen, wife of the King Krichevskoy; Overlord of the Netherworld. Krichevskoy was so thrilled by his son’s birth that he froze the ocean. Laharl was raised with love and care, his own mother preached to him about love regularly. He was also scolded by his mother whenever he did something bad because she wanted to raise him to be a kind boy. He became greatly attached to his parents, especially his mother, but one day, he was infected with a rare and deadly disease that could not be cured by normal means. The life of one who loved him was required to save him; the Queen took her own life to do just that despite Krichevskoy’s effort to stop her. From that point on, Laharl hated and repressed the feeling and concept of love because it was his mother’s love for him that drove her to kill herself. This repression of love was so strong that he did not even mourn his mother’s death, but shut away his feeling of sorrow. He also became physically averse to the love phrases his mother had preached to him. Laharl came to distance himself from his father, going so far as to claim he hated him, but lived a comfortable life at the Overlord’s Castle ordering and complaining to the servants at his own leisure. One day, after his 1310 birthday, Laharl decided to take 10 days nap. Meanwhile, Tyrant Overlord Baal attacked the Netherworld, and Krichevskoy had use up all his energy to seal him. Later, Etna poisoned Laharl at Maderas command, causing Laharl to sleep for over two years. Etna eventually woke him up and told him about his father’s demise. Sequentially, Laharl went on a quest to become the Overlord.
- ↑ Though to be fair, they stole it from his castle first.
- ↑ Though how much he hates him depends on whether or not you interpret his line as actual hatred or him simply acting like a typical demon.
- ↑ ”That spot is reserved for the person I could kill over and over again, and I’d never get enough! Hahaha!”
- ↑ And killed at least fifty allies, which is required to get this ending.
