East China

East China (simplified Chinese: 华东; traditional Chinese: 華東; pinyin: Huádōng; lit.: 'China's East') is a geographical and a loosely defined cultural region that covers the eastern coastal area of China.

East China
Country People's Republic of China
 Republic of China (Taiwan)
Population384.3 million

An abolished concept, for economical purposes the region was defined from 1961 to 1978 by the Chinese Central Government to include the provinces of (in alphabetical order) Anhui, Fujian, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Shandong and Zhejiang, as well as the municipality of Shanghai. Since the Chinese government claims Taiwan and the few outlying islands of Fujian (Kinmen and Matsu) governed by the Republic of China (Taiwanese government) as its territory, the claimed "Taiwan Province, People's Republic of China" was once classified in this region though Kinmen and Matsu are part of Fujian while the PRC only claims Taiwan and Penghu.

gollark: XML is evil for configuration but TOML is great!
gollark: Or TOML!
gollark: They would use a much more suitable esolang, like Befunge.
gollark: Also, cool use of invisible characters: encode data as invisible character sequences and mix it in with text so it'll be persisted through copy-pasting, though not screenshotting.
gollark: Apparently Unicode has an invisible comma character. It looks like this: ⁣. One must wonder why they thought this was necessary.
