This under construction expressway will be a 8-lane (4 lanes in each direction) greenfield-alignment route in backward areas,[6] which will reduce the current 24 hours travel time to mere 12 hours.[7] This expressway, along with Western Dedicated Freight Corridor will be a vital backbone of the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor.

After tenders were awarded in December 2018 for the whole highway, it is expected to be completed by 2022.[1]

Route alignment

The greenfield alignment is as follows:[8][9][10]

Haryana

The expressway in Haryana will run parallel to NH248A (Delhi-Alwar route) to its east side. It will begin at Rajiv chowk in Delhi and pass through Gurugram and connect to NH919 from Bhirawati village northeast of Sohna and exit Haryana at Kolgaon south of Ferozpur Jhirka.[11][12]

The cost of the project is expected to be 44,000 crore (US$6.2 billion).[14] Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway was declared as National Expressway 4 on 10 January 2020.[15]

Project status updates

  • Sep 2017: Land acquisition completed. Five tenders awarded, work to start soon.[16]
  • Jan 2018: Work to start in two months.[17]
  • April 2018: Ircon International, Patel Infrastructure, Ashoka Concessions, IRB Infrastructure and Sadbhav Engineering have bagged contracts to build the first phase between Vadodara and Kim (located near Surat) [18]

Concerns

The 6-lane alignment of this expressway will cut the tiger passage between Ranthambore National Park (RNP) and Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary.[19] Wildlife crossing, including wildlife tunnels and bridges, are the solutions that are needed.
