Sengoku Rance/Characters

Here's the list of characters of Sengoku Rance. Houses are roughly listed by importance to plot. Contributions are always welcome.

Main Characters

Rance

Our "protagonist" in the whole Rance series. In the 7th continuity of the Rance series, he comes to JAPAN to escape marriage from Zeth and to take a vacation at the hot springs. His main goal is to have sex with all of the women in the world.

See here for tropes associated with Rance.

Sill Plain

Rance's "slave", read as Rance's most cherished person. She travels alongside Rance wherever he goes and is pretty much with him after being bought as a slave. She still wears her slave collar even though that collar has no more effect on her due to Rance.

See here for tropes associated with Sill Plain.

Oda House

Oda Nobunaga

Think he's a merciless guy in this game? Think again. This Oda Nobunaga is probably the kindest out of every single Oda Nobunaga named character. That said, he is the most skilled swordsman of the Oda house though he's currently sick and because of this, he passes leadership to Rance. He's got a pet monkey named Touikichiro who steers the entire plot.

Tropes associated with Nobunaga:

Kouhime

The little sister of Nobunaga, she is twelve years old. She always takes care of her brother because of his sickness.

Tropes associated with Kouhime:

3G

A Youkai who has three heads in the service of the Oda house. He handles the everyday tasks of the Oda empire. Has an informant named Edge.

Tropes associated with 3G:

  • Catch Phrase: "Kaaaaaah!"
  • Crazy Awesome: In-universe at least. Sakamoto Ryouma sure was impressed with 3G that's for sure.
  • Chew Toy: Always to Rance.
  • Hypercompetent Sidekick: Rance may be the guy leading Oda's armies, but actually running the administrative side of government is all on 3G's shoulders due to Rance not giving a crap. Thankfully, 3G is very, very good at this.
  • The Smart Guy
  • Stealth Pun: Ever wondered why he had a youkai phone, or why he had a keypad-patterned kimono, or why his underling named Eiji/Edge?

Ranmaru

You think she'd have any relationship with Nobunaga right? Wrong! She is described as Oda's Fearsome Warrior, Ranmaru was taken in by Oda how many years ago. She now serves the Oda house out of loyalty to her lord.

Tropes associated with Ranmaru:

  • Badass
  • Batman Gambit: How do you win your lover? Simple: you give him his favorite aka a loli kid. She pretty much uses her adopted daughter to win Katsuie. Even Rance was impressed by her devotion.
  • Crutch Character: Your most powerful unit at the start of your game, unfortunately you get many stronger units the farther you go, and her usefulness gets limited (unless you are using her as an independent force with the Operation Permits).
  • Cry Cute: Unfortunately, we never actually see it.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Towards Rance all the time.
  • Perpetual Frowner: Always. Even gets lampshaded by Katsuie.
  • The Stoic
  • Stripperific: Wears a bikini with shoulder pad armor in battle.

Katsuie Shibata

Described as the best foot soldier of the Oda House, he is also the number one Lolicon in the entire game.

Tropes associated with Katsuie:

  • Badass
  • Big Brother Instinct: What he thinks he has. Rance says otherwise.
  • Blade on a Stick
  • Crutch Character: Somehow, Katsuie is more of a subversion than anything. He is indispensable in the beginning, but stays fairly useful throughout the game depending on play style (sure, All Guard and regeneration-type spearmen is nifty but by that time Katsuie is likely to have the sheer numbers on his side). This makes an interesting parallel if compared to Ranmaru, both story-wise and gameplay-wise.
  • Lolicon: Is definitely one. He'll also try to convince Rance and depending on your actions, it can lead to a Nonstandard Game Over.
  • Nonstandard Game Over: Be veeeeeeeery careful in trying to clear this guy. He could make a comment about teaching Rance the ways of lolis and if you clearly fall for it, said event gives out a Nonstandard Game Over.
  • Noodle Incident: Apparently, something happened between him and Shinobu that made him become a lolicon.
  • Power of Love: Clear Ranmaru and she & Katsuie get a noticeable boost in attack and defense if both are deployed together in a battle.
  • Stone Wall: As expected from his status as a foot soldier commander. One of the best in the game, in fact.

Uesugi House

Uesugi Kenshin

The current head of Uesugi House, also a devout worshipper of Bishamonten. She participates in battles around her territory as helpers on the defensive side.

Naoe Ai

Kenshin's main strategist, although her stratagems are usually discarded in favor of Kenshin's more direct approach. She is also a great cook; it helps when her superior eats a five-tier boxed meal as a snack...

  • Deadpan Snarker: Always to Rance.
  • Love Epiphany: After sleeping with Rance a few times, she's horrified to realize that she isn't just doing it because Rance is forcing her to, with strong implications of having fallen in love. Not that she lets it show.
  • The Strategist: Although Kenshin, as her leader, obviously favors a more direct approach.
  • Take Me Instead!: Offers her body in exchange for Kenshin's when Kensei started his revolt.

Uesugi Kensei

Kenshin's dissatisfied uncle. In a fit of jealousy, he staged a coup against his own niece in the middle of the conflict with Oda House, severely weakening their own forces in the process.

  • He-Man Woman Hater, in a way. He thinks women should just stay in the kitchen and clean the house.
  • Smug Snake: He is undeniably the most selfish character barring Xavier in the entire game.
  • Too Dumb to Live: From the player's viewpoint, at least. Starting a rebellion that takes out competent commanders from your own roster and weakens your own army in the middle of a war with another country? Granted, Kensei was expecting to sway Rance by offering Kenshin to him... but when that plan doesn't work, he refuses to re-employ the competent commanders.
    • What an Idiot!: Again, from the player's perspective, but also from an in-universe perspective, it is a stunning act of military incompetence to remove competent troops and able commanders from the field in a war your side stands an excellent chance of losing.

Hojo House

Hojo Souun

Head of Hojo house and Onmyouji extraordinaire. He works hard for JAPAN's safety from the ogres, often neglecting his health and personal life in the process.

Nanjou Ran

Souun's fiancee and a rather weak Onmyouji. She strives hard to prove herself useful to Souun.

Daidouji Komatsu

A popular commander of the Hojo forces. Her fans absolutely adore her, and flock to her in the thousands. There's even doujinshi about her!

  • Bound and Gagged: In all of her H-scenes.
  • Genki Girl: At least until Ran got captured and Souun went missing.
  • Teen Idol: Though she is an idol commander instead of singer, but her character design is intended to invoke the image of one.
  • What Could Have Been: The cut content in the latest version includes a scene where Nanjo Ran has a little "accident" and it is implied that Komatsu was responsible or at least wasn't shedding a tear, taking a much more sinister look at her personality.
  • Yandere: Hinted shades of this, which the above trope explains in more detail.

Ashikaga House

Ashikaga Choushin/Ashikaga Supergod

Self-proclaimed emperor of JAPAN. His tastes of beauty and aesthetics are... unique, to say the least.

  • Animal Motifs: Unintentional on his part, but he looks like a giant tuna in a human skin suit and gets associated with fish imagery in descriptions.
  • Catch Phrase: "Pupiiiiii!"
  • Gonk: Not only him, but most of his family is this, save for Akihime, who he ironically thinks is the ugly one.
  • Lethal Joke Character: Only useful if you want the Emperor's Ring or to clear Akihime. Beyond that, he's pretty much just a Joke Character.
  • My Name Is Not Durwood: Clear him and Rance will change his name to Ashikaga Shit.

Ikkyu

Ashikaga House's main strategist.

  • Cloudcuckoolander: Talks to a straw doll he refers to as his mother which he holds up to his ear like a telephone, which Rance finds incredibly odd.
  • Disk One Nuke: His Reverse Fortune that can reverse the tide of war provided you have enough time, the gauge is really against you, and that you can guard him while casting it.
  • Expy: Of Ikkyu-San, an old anime.

Yamamoto Isoroku

The sole surviving scion of the Yamamoto House, who lost the war with the Ashikaga. A beautiful lady with great archery skill.

  • Badass
    • Four-Star Badass: Way more competent than Ashikaga at bare minimum, and when/if she joins Rance she makes an excellent archery unit leader, complete with a very useful unique skill.
    • Handicapped Badass: Was severely crippled and unable to walk when she took on Xavier. That did not stop her from taking him down.
    • Lady of War: Despite her own comments of being unladylike, she is still more refined than most of your female commanders.
    • Pregnant Badass: And How!
  • Dead Little Brother: She works hard for the Ashikaga clan to someday restore her Yamamoto family... only to find her brother, who was supposed to be the family successor, dead by the hands of the very clan she was serving.
  • Historical Domain Character name: She takes her name, down to the kanji, from a famous Japanese WW 2 general... while not being his Expy.
  • Hot Shounen Mom, eventually... since in her ending, she bore Rance's son.
  • I Am Not Pretty: Believes that she's undesirable because No Guy Wants an Amazon.
  • Law of Inverse Fertility: Subverted! At first, it seems like Rance was taking advantage of Isoroku not knowing about the contraception spell... until the epilogue and Rance Quest reveal that yes, she did end up with Rance's kid, implying that he kept his promise.
  • One-Hit Kill: Whirlwind Shot. She actually works better as an assassin than the ninjas who have the Assassinate skill.
  • The Archer: She wields a bow, commands an archer unit, and has a skill which can rout an enemy squad with one shot.
  • Yamato Nadeshiko: Takes this idea a little too literally at first, believing she has to throw away her pride and be a subservient, proper wife to any man who can bear her a son. Rance (albeit for selfish reasons) convinces her she should do what makes her happy, and thanks be to saving her from some Attempted Rape, she winds up with Rance, who does' makes her more than willing to carry out this trope with soemwhat more open eyes.

Mouri House

Mouri Motonari

The current leader of Mouri House. A giant of a man who loves to fight and generally act silly.

  • A Father to His Men: Literally and figuratively. He's the father to Teru, Kiku, and Chinu after all.
  • Ascended to A Higher Plane of Existence: Clear him and he becomes his big self again but as a ghost this time. In war battles, he's useless again but in dungeon battles, he's pretty good. Especially since he is now Immune to magic like Rizna.
  • Badass: In the True Route when Xavier starts killing other countries' commanders, most of them go down in seconds. If Xavier shows up in Mouri territory, the text states that the fight lasted eight hours.
  • Bigger Is Better: Invoked by him when above trope happened to him.
  • Blood Knight: Hell yeah!
    • When recruiting him from prison, you don't even need to wait a turn to use him!
  • Friendly Enemy: Notable for being the only lord in JAPAN who doesn't have a bad opinion of Oda's "secret" ruler, Rance and even made plans to marry him to his daughter Teru if he meets his expectations after he declares war against him.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: According to the plot, he's a powerful guy. In-game however, if you're fighting in a war battle when he's cursed, he's pretty weak. Conversely, if you uncurse him, he gets to be more powerful.
    • However, use him on Xavier and you'll be laughing... since cleared Motonari will do exactly 200 damage to any enemy, be it in army or single battle.
  • Large and In Charge: While cursed.
  • Large Ham
  • Mercy Kill: He kills a Mook when Teru was viciously torturing said mook.
  • Nonstandard Game Over: In Kenshin's route, just conquer the Mouri house while he's still cursed. I dare you.
  • Older Than They Look: He's 100 years old. He could have lived to 200 if he didn't get cursed.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He has pink, hearts and a panda on his armor. He's also an enormous Blood Knight, and literally so in his cursed form.

Mouri Teru

The heir to Motonari's position, and one of the most violent generals in JAPAN. She excels in cleaning.

Kikkawa Kiku

Motonari's second daughter and also a ninja. Her cooking is top-notch.

Kobayakawa Chinu

Motonari's youngest daughter, and the nicest of them all (if only on the surface). She heals and poisons with the same proficiency.

Yamanaka Kojika

A vassal of the Amaku family, who are crushed by the Mouri. She is striving hard to revive her family, even though technically she cannot (the last heir died).

Takeda House

Takeda Shingen

Leader of the Takeda House. He fights using his big armor and his ax. He doesn't really exist, actually. He either died long ago or was just created by the four key generals of Takeda to unite the Takeda household.

Baba Shouen

One of Takeda's best cavalry/tebasaki commander. A hothead who loves to charge headlong to battle.

Yamagata Masakage

One of Takeda's best cavalry/tebasaki commander. He fares better with strategy if compared to his comrade.

Kousaka Yoshikage

Takeda's main ninja commander, and one of the best ninja in the game due to his Fuu Rin Ka Zan skill.

Sanada Tourin

The main tactician of the Takeda household, and one of the best tactical minds in JAPAN.

Tokugawa House

Tokugawa Ieyasu

Leader of the Tokugawa household. He's taken a passive stance at the whole war debacle as long as his house full of youkai is at peace.

Ii Naomasa

One of Tokugawa's two warrior generals. Quite useless when you get him.

  • Joke Character: He has the Dungeon Battle Expert skill... at a character level that is too low for the skill to actually be useful.
  • The Straight Man: He's as close to "ordinary" as Tokugawa youkai get.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tempura. He's not as crazy as Ieyasu, though.

Honda Tadakatsu

One of Tokugawa's two warrior generals, and the better one. Likes to try and massage people, with amusing outcomes.

Hattori Hanzou

A ninja commander of the Tokugawa forces, and the more useful one since he packs the Assassination skill.

Sakai Tadatsugu

A ninja commander of the Tokugawa forces, and the less useful one.

Sakakibara Yasumasa

Tokugawa House's main foot soldier general.

  • Eyes Always Shut: Not only his eyes are always shut, he is perpetually sleeping. Even in battles.
  • Lovable Traitor: He rats Ieyasu's fondness of tempura to Rance. Not that it's a bad thing, but still a traitor in a sense. He is quite lovable, to the point that Rance keeps him in his bedroom.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Tempura. He can eat it while sleeping.

Senhime

Former daughter of the household before Ieyasu decided to take over and adopt the family name. She gets found by Rance when he conquered the Tokugawa household the old fashioned way. After which, she gets hired by Rance provided that she goes into battle because she hates peace time. If you don't let her fight every three turns, she leaves you.

Shimazu House

Shimazu Yoshihisa

The eldest Shimazu brother and Shimazu House leader. He is quite lecherous.

Shimazu Kazuhisa

The second Shimazu brother and a masterful warrior. Equally lecherous.

  • Blade on a Stick: His weapon is a spear, although he commands warriors with katanas as their default weapon.
  • Chivalrous Pervert
  • Love At First Sight: He finally fell in love, for real, with Naoe Ai. If Ai's feeling for Rance is less than Love, she will join Kazuhisa's unit.

Shimazu Toshihisa

The third brother and a musketeer. More flamboyant from his older brothers, but equally lecherous.

  • Guns Are Worthless: Unless his men are massed in large numbers, safe from melee fighters, and not disrupted in any way (his largest weakness is the Kenshin-Uruza-Natori combo since it takes down his precious action points), he is this. Otherwise, he's quite solid as a musketeer.
  • Handsome Lech: Arguably the worst lecher in the family. Also, the one most involved with Agireda.
  • Love At First Sight: He finally fell in love, for real, with Daidouji Komatsu. If Komatsu's feeling for Rance is less than Love, she will join Toshihisa's unit.

Shimazu Iehisa

The youngest amongst the brother, and certainly following on his brothers' footsteps in the art of lechery.

  • Love At First Sight: He finally fell in love, for real, with either Ranmaru or Senhime. If either one's feeling for Rance is less than maximum (Trust for Ranmaru, Love for Senhime), she will join Iehisa's unit.
  • Token Mini-Moe: Subverted. Iehisa is actually a solid Tactician.

Kurohime

A longtime resident of the Shimazu household. She has been living there since the Shimazu brothers can remember.

  • Ambiguously Brown
  • Color Coded for Your Convenience: Her name is Kurohime (lit. Black Princess), and it shows.
  • Cool Big Sis: Unfortunately for the Shimazu brothers.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's half fire-kappa.
  • Healing Factor: In a bad way though we only hear about the really unpleasant things third hand.
  • Human Mom, Nonhuman Dad: Her dad is Xavier, a demonic fire kappa
  • Immortality: She's hundreds of years old, looks to be in her 20s and promises to look over the brothers as they eventually die of old age. She also has a large healing factor and a fairly resilient body.
  • Meaningful Name: Kurohime translates into Black Princess, and she's also Color Coded for Your Convenience. But that's not all, because black can be related to darkness, which is what the demons are creatures of. Three guesses on who her father is.
    • Kurohime is possibly also a Sue Donym that sticks after she used it for a long time. Her real name is Kyouko.
  • Team Mom: She basically sees the Shimazu brothers as her little brothers or children since she raised them from diapers.

Agireda

A fierce tribeswoman commander of the Shimazu forces. She is one of the girls the Shimazu brothers seduced into their service.

  • The Chief's Daughter: Presumably.
  • Tsundere: Why else would she put up with those brothers?
    • Yandere: Then again, she's rather gleeful when you character clear her, which involves killing all four of them.

Asai-Asakura House

Asakura Yoshikage

Leader of the Asai-Asakura House who really just wants to unite JAPAN through diplomacy instead of force. That doesn't mean they won't wage war against people who insulted them, ESPECIALLY on behalf of his daughter Yukihime.

  • Badass Grandpa: He IS one by age and by looks, but Yukihime is his daughter. However, it is rather plausible that he already had grandchildren, considering that his older sons (Asakura Ichirou and so on) serve as his commanders. It's also worth noting that he already had at least 20 children by the time Rance came to JAPAN... and if you pay attention at the flavor texts displayed while Asai-Asakura's turn is being played by the computer, you will notice that his family is still expanding.
  • Berserk Button: Well, Rance did grab it... but seriously, Yoshikage only declared war on Oda after Yukihime got molested by Rance (which will happen sooner or later regardless of what you do at first).
  • Blade on a Stick: Even though his class is a Warrior Monk.
  • Cool Old Guy: So cool, that Rance actually acknowledges him as one of his best guys just because his speeches and his methods are easy enough for Rance to understand. This results in a massive boost on your Natonal Power (he gives you a point of National Power per conquered territory, which adds up to typically around seven to ten).
  • Manipulative Bastard: He bases his entire foreign policy around manipulating other nations for political gain.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: He stands out among JAPAN-ese royals due to actually being excellent at it.

Yukihime

Daughter of Yoshikage and considered as the most beautiful woman in JAPAN. Her everyday life gets shattered by Rance however.

  • Break the Cutie
    • Before Asai-Asakura falls, she surrenders her body to Hakkin Dasan to gain his service in defending the country. Hakkin repels the Oda aggressors with his pandas, and then they have sex as arranged. But in the process, Hakkin's mask falls off to reveal his cursed face, which terrifies Yukihime. Insulted, Hakkin tells her to leave, and declares he will not help Asai-Asakura anymore.
    • During the above event, she gets raped by Rance—right in front of her now dying father who promptly learns she gave her virginity to Hakkin earlier.
    • Next, she offers her body to an old villager as she needs shelter to avoid the pursuing Oda troops. The very next morning, the villager turns away an inquiring Oda soldier as promised. However, he promptly threatens to call back the soldier if she doesn't offer her body for a second time.
    • At this point, you may convince her to join your army. Where she has to put up with Rance, though a character clear has her come to terms with everything.
    • Otherwise, she'll promote herself into practically a High-Class Call Girl. To get revenge on Rance, she'll reluctantly sleep around with high-ranking vassal lords who'll convince a random country to declare war on you.
    • Finally, after you fend off the country she incited, she requests aid from a group of bandits (in return for sex once again). However, as she's demented at this point, they take advantage of her, and she becomes their Sex Slave. Forever.
  • Informed Attractiveness: Said to be the most beautiful in JAPAN.
  • "It's Not Rape If You Enjoyed It": Averted. She's one of the few people who actually seems to have a problem with being raped by Rance. To say the least.
  • Love Epiphany: Realizes that Rance would actually consider how a woman feels and isn't a complete menace.
  • Odd Name Out: From her family's Numerical Theme Naming tendency; if their Numerical Theme Naming is to be upheld, she would have been named Ichiko-hime or Ichi-hime. It's probably because of her status as Yoshikage's eldest daughter.
  • So Beautiful It's a Curse: The dark application of the trope. "Beauty actually is making this person's life miserable."
  • STD Immunity: Averted. She eventually gets impregnated by one of the bandits. However, she's ridiculously impervious to pregnancy and diseases considering how many men she's slept with, and how none of them (except Rance) used contraceptives or pulled out.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair

Hakkin Dasan

A hermit who was cursed by a youkai. He can control panda bears using his cursed eye.

Takuga House

Sakamoto Ryouma

The leader of Takuga House. She seemed normal enough, until it is revealed that she is a futanari

  • Berserk Button: Insult any of her friends and you won't live to see another day.
  • Gender Flip: Once you conquer Morocco and unlocked the Sex Change Temple, you can trigger events that will lead to deciding on whether you make her a he (you can clear Mine and get a Ryouma-Mine H-scene) or a she (you get to clear Gon, Yuzuru, plus a Rance-Ryouma H-scene).

Kawanoe Mine

She is in charge of general housekeeping in Takuga house. Only has one hand.

Kawanoe Yuzuru

He is a warrior who is fast friends with Ryouma despite their constant bickering. Missing an eye.

Gon

A cursed man with spikes protruding from his arms and back. He cannot read and write, suggesting that he's a savant of some kind.

Dokuganryuu House

Dokuganryuu Masamune

An excellent swordsman who is also leader of the Youkai Kingdom in Oshuu. A literal single eyeball who has four wives.

  • The Ace: Took down the former youkai king (queen, really) then married her, has three other wives, everyone finds him cute, powerful warrior and genuinely nice guy. He's basically casually better than Rance at everything.
  • Achilles' Heel: Telling him of a secret word ( No eyedrops!) will make him stop using his eye drops that heal him.
  • Badass: Enough so to be considered a Bonus Boss.
    • Badass Driver: Koujuurou is a friggin small car people!
    • Four-Star Badass: And he earned that title by taking down his wife, who used to hold that title.
  • Chick Magnet: All of the women find him cute.
  • Coitus Uninterruptus
  • Expy: He is visually similar (well, give or take a suit of armor and a sword) to Kitaro's father from GeGeGe no Kitaro.
    • Not to mention that he is the obvious representative for Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon, in the game, with the familiar helmet design and literally being a single eye.
  • The Napoleon: With the exception that he's kind to his subordinates, he pretty much fits due to the fact that he's smaller than his wives.
  • Tenchi Solution: Four wives, remember?

Omachi

The North Guardian of The Youkai Kingdom. Some people still refer her as Machijyoten, her name as the former Youkai Kingdom leader.

Noir

The East Guardian of The Youkai Kingdom. A spider youkai swordsman.

  • Improbable Weapon User: We never see her use a sword in her attack sprites. She uses her string instead.
  • Romancing the Widow: Her character clear is only possible if Masamune is not in your army, which the game considers as being dead.
  • Tsundere: Most pronounced if you clear her.

Orime

The West Guardian of The Youkai Kingdom. A youkai ninja with certain... unique traits.

  • Big Eater: Of ohagi. A trait she shared with a generic bonus commander you can employ.
  • Fragile Speedster
  • Romancing the Widow: Her character clear is only possible if Masamune is not in your army, which the game considers as being dead.

Nogiku

The South Guardian of The Youkai Kingdom. A cyclopean youkai girl who wields a giant pen in place of a spear.

  • Hilarity Ensues: Her attempts to flee Rance end up like this one time.
  • Improbable Weapon User: With a solid skillset, great squad growth, and equally solid stats, she proves to us that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword.
  • Hot Librarian: She likes to learn and do volunteer work as a teacher in her free time, and fairly easy in the eyes too if you don't mind her single eye. As Rance puts it, "The only thing missing is the glasses."
  • Romancing the Widow: Her character clear is only possible if Masamune is not in your army, which the game considers as being dead.

Iga Ninjas

Suzume

The main informant and espionage operative in Rance's conquest of JAPAN. She defected from Iga because Oda House (under Rance's leadership) is less restrictive and more relaxed.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: Part of her job is to poison people through her body, so she has this. On the flip side, it also makes her immune to medical drugs as well.
  • Animal Motifs: Even if her name means "sparrow", her main motif is still cats. It also contrasts with Inukai's dog motif.
  • Catch Phrase: She has the standard ninja Nin-nin~ and in the original Japanese, she also had a habit of ending her sentences with the archaic "de gozaru".
  • Crutch Character: Her stats and assassination skill make her useful early on, but she quickly becomes outclassed by other ninjas like Kikkawa Kiku.
  • Eyes of Gold
  • Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: Invoked. She is a kunoichi.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Well, she has to be visible to do what she does best... seducing males.
  • Impossibly Low Neckline: The only reason why that kimono hasn't fallen off already is probably because it's an H-game. Though considering her job, something like that is actually really convenient.
  • Out with a Bang/Go Out with a Smile: She dies at the climax of having sex with Rance in Quest. He seems genuinely hearbroken and desperately tries to wake her up to no avail. Later that day she comes back as a ghost, and Rance tells her to never do that to him again.
  • Plot Armor: You can't dismiss her unit because of this.
  • Sex Face Turn: With a little fun and a lot of luck.
  • Trying to Catch Me Fighting Dirty: Rance did catch her dirty tricks when they were "playing dirty" the first time around...
  • Your Days Are Numbered: She says in her character clear event that kunoichi often die from the amount of poison they take in their body, and she probably has a year or two at best to live. Once Rance gets angry at her for saying that so casually, she admits she was joking. Double Subverted when she actually does die early on in Rance Quest, although she comes back as a ghost.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Grade A, if that thing can be counted as a skirt.

Inukai

The current leader of Iga ninja. He loves his dogs very much.

Gekko

The former leader of Iga, and the former Nobunaga's personal acquaintance. He went missing when he and Shinobu was struck by a mysterious explosion.

  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: If you are currently at war with Iga with Gekkou in your party, you can choose to execute Inukai this way.
  • Cool Old Guy: He worked with Nobunaga's father.
  • Handicapped Badass: Shinobu is his right hand. Literally.
  • Tagalong Kid: Shinobu.
  • Taking You with Me: If you send a character-sleared him alone in a war battle, he'll have a chat with Shinobu then explode killing all enemies and taking a territory. You lose him of course.

Tanegashima House

Tanegashima Shigehiko

The head of Tanegashima house, and the inventor of muskets in JAPAN. He is a skilled blacksmith who is rather... blocky.

Yuzuhara Yuzumi

A skilled musket marksman. His father forged her musket, one of the finest in existence. She loves all that is cute... including some of Oda's Ex-Tokugawa commanders.

Tenshi Religion

Seigan

The current head of Tenshi Religion. He is actually around 70 years old.

  • Older Than They Look: He can easily pass himself as a man in his late-twenties or thirties.
  • Sinister Scythe: Well, it's Geppei's, and considering Geppei is actually a devil, this trope could not be more spot-on.

Genri

A Tenshi monk who has just came back from the mainland.

Miko Institute

Natori

Head of the Miko Institute. Said institute is designed to let men feel that they're satisfied... via sex. Rance tried his luck with this place only to fail repeatedly due to the fact that he doesn't know rape is wrong and therefore cannot be evil. Said evil desires are then used to transplant them to the women then said women are taken to Orochi where they get sacrificed.

  • Miko: One of the best in the game, in Game Breaker setup or otherwise.
  • Out with a Bang: As an earlier miko states, she's a fukuman. Great people who sleep with her become stronger, as sex with Rance shows, but what happens to ordinary people who sleep with a fukuman is left unstated until after the Natori H scene. Turns out, they die.
  • Sobriquet: Miko of Death.

Tamagushi Fuuka / Habikino

An amnesiac miko who lives in the vicinity of Tea House Nobu, and a frequent visitor. Recruitable early on.

  • Chekhov's Gun: That rock that she carries is a part of the skin of Orochi.
  • Cool Big Sis: Sometimes to Kouhime.
  • Dead All Along: As she was a sacrifice to Orochi.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Only remembers that she is a Miko and all things pertaining to the profession. Everything else is vague, though. She's one of the women sacrificed to Orochi.
  • Miko: Most likely your very first miko unit.
  • Power Tattoo: On her back. Doesn't actually glow, though, although her H-scene may suggest so.

Akashi House

Akashi Kazemaru

The youngest heir of the Akashi family, and the only survivor of the Mouri Family's onslaught of Himeji.

  • Badass: Well, not at first.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He was thrust into the seat of Akashi House leader after his father and older brothers died in Mouri's onslaught. Right after his coming-of-age ceremony.
  • But Not Too Foreign: His mother is apparently from the continent, though no specific country was stated.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: When faced with the option between capturing him and letting him commit suicide, the player also has the "Moustasche!" option in the menu. This basically means that Rance decides to super glue a moustasche stuck to his face and then letting him commit his suicide... In public. Rance comments that it must be extremely humiliating to commit suicide with that moustasche glued to his face.
  • If You Die, I Call Your Stuff: Rance once tells him this before a battle regarding Hibachi. To his credit, normally timid Kazemaru gives him a firm "No."
  • Lethal Joke Character: When you first recruit him, he may not look like much since a warrior with 3's and 4's as stats (out of 9) is pretty much joke tier in this game. Investing a few stats-enhancing items on him plus clearing his events (and subsequently pairing her with Hibachi) can make him into a near-perfect soldier (with straight 8s in stats if you invested enough). He also nets a good ability in dungeon battles, though his level is still less then desirable for it.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the red to Hibachi's blue even though he's got the blue hair.
  • Shrinking Violet: Male version. Become much less like this if he's paired with Hibachi.

Hibachi

One of the Nue, secret weapons of the Akashi house. She was set free by Kazemaru and eventually fell in love with him.

Hara House

Hara Shouji

The head of Hara house, who is actually under his wife's thumb. Rather weak-willed, though if pressed can show good character too.

  • Expy: Milder, Played for Laughs xerox of Ahab. Interestingly enough, much like Ahab, as long as you keep him away from his wife, he's a halfway decent guy.
  • Heel Realization: When Rance refuses to give him his wife back, Shouji thinks that Rance has seen through his thoughts. Rance doesn't really want to give her back but went anyway for this explanation.
  • Love Makes You Dumb: Akihime's influence didn't exactly improve his common sense. He even admits to as much.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: Clear his house in Free-For-All and you WILL gain the respect of EVERY single Sengoku Rance player out there because, not only is his house the weakest and the Warmup Boss of the original game, Akihime will be spending your money.

Akihime

The wife of Hara Shouji. A very vain women who likes to indulge in her lavish lifestyle at the cost of heavy taxation in her domain.

Imagawa House

"Hanny King" Imagawa Yoshimoto

The leader of the Hannys. He lead the Hannys and erected their own domain on Toukaidou.

  • The Man Behind the Curtain: The Yoshimoto Imagawa. He became the Hanny King when he put on the disguise near a Hanny settlement to protect his daughter, Anko. The disguise was proven too good, and the Hannies elected him leader.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: His house is also a tough one to clear in FFA mode, due to meager power on the Hannies' side. Fortunately, We Have Reserves (you get a free Hanny commander every turn).
  • Supreme Chef: His Imagawayaki is delicious.
  • Joke Character: He never even fights.

Okita Nozomi

The best swordsman in the Shinsengumi, which isn't saying much. She is perpetually sick, even to the point of coughing blood at times.

Foreigners

Rizna Lanfebit

The first reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Zeth. A slightly airheaded magician who is immune to magic.

Uruza Planeis

The second reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Zeth. A strategist with unique powers and a past comrade of Rance.

  • Ill Girl: In the previous game, she was wheelchair-bound from trauma. She got better.
  • The Strategist: Reflected by her ability and the unit she commands.
  • Tsurime/Tareme: An interesting case. In the previous game, she had Tareme as an Ill Girl, but once she recovered, she had Tsurime. Her current appearance is in between the two, leaning towards Tsurime.

Magic The Gandhi

The third reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Zeth. A magician with traces of tsundere who is also Rance's fiancee whom he abandoned at the altar at the end of the previous game and came to JAPAN to escape. She arrived, hot on his trail, to ensure that he survives the Warring States Era so that he can return to Zeth and take his rightful place on the throne. Her father is the current ruler of Zeth, Ragnarockark Super Gandhi.

Kentou Kanami

The first reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Leazas. A JAPAN-ese ninja who got lost in the mainland while training.

Maria Custard

The second reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Leazas. A researcher who wields the strongest firearm in the game, the Tulip.

  • BFG: Oh yeah, especially compared to Tanegashima's muskets. The Tulips are practically bazookas.
  • Gadgeteer Genius
  • Heterosexual Life Partners: Best friends with Shizuka herself.
  • I Am Not Pretty: She's convinced that she's fat. Rance tells her he likes her better when she had a little more weight on her after she says she's been dieting.
  • Meganekko
  • Schizo-Tech: The Rance Series's major source of it.
    • By the time of Rance II, she had a bazooka (Tulip 1). Near the end, she invents artillery (Tulip 2).
    • In Rance III, she was using a tank (Tulip 3). It's destroyed by the end of the game though.
    • In Rance IV, she invents an aircraft (Tulip 4).
    • In Kichikuou Rance, she invents a rocket ship (Tulip 100).
    • In Rance Quest Magnum, she discovers and promptly forgets nuclear fission.
  • Small Girl, Big Gun
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair

Leila Glainie

The third reinforcement you'll get if you requested reinforcements from Leazas. An excellent fencer who commands the Leazas Queen's personal guards.

Masou Shizuka

Shizuka will join you after Maria joins. Hates Rance with her guts, and Rance cannot win her heart.

  • Lost Forever: If you're going for Ran or Kill the Monkey route, you better be quick in capturing Kurohime or else the Shimazu brothers will seduce her quite easily due to her being stuck in Hate with Rance.
  • Pillar of Light: She joins with Oda packing one in her White Destruction Beam.

Ogawa Kentarou

A Japanese young man who were trapped in Rance's world. Miki's childhood friend. The owner of Holy Sword Nikkou, one of two weapons able to actually kill demons.

  • Born Lucky
  • Calling Your Attacks: Kentarou-kun Slash!
  • Childhood Friend Romance: Not going anywhere quickly since both are pretty thick about how the other feels. Right when Kentarou is thinking about making a move, Rance convinces him not to since he'd rather be able to sleep with Miki himself.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Definitely a bit out there.
  • Emergency Transformation: Thanks to Miki injecting her Demon King blood to him when he was dying, he's now a demon as well.
  • Empathic Weapon: Holy Sword Nikkou. Unlike Chaos, she's pretty much a decent woman.
  • Hero of Another Story: Rance actually gets mad at him for not realizing he isn't the main character when the two attack Xavier at the midway point of the story. Though that also had to do with Kentarou being much less genre savvy about Never Found the Body. Then again, thinking he's the hero isn't exactly unwarranted when you have a magical sword, the demon king for a girlfriend and get trapped in another world. To be fair, he was the protagonist of Alicesoft's first series, Little Princess.
  • Idiot Hero: Up to Eleven.
  • Keet: Though, in the English patch, his dialogue tends to read like something else entirely...
  • Master Swordsman: Kentarou's not up to par yet, but Nikkou was one back in the day.
  • One-Man Army: As long as your opponents are human AND he has been turned into a demon by Miki, he can survive battles quite easily.
  • Superpower Lottery: He raided the entire warehouse! He's now a demon himself therefore has increased abilities, he is using a sword capable of killing demons, and his girlfriend is the Demon King. You cannot get anymore lucky than that. Though of course, power attracts problems with it...

Kurusu Miki

A Japanese young woman who were trapped in Rance's world. Kentarou's childhood friend. She loves the man, but he's thicker than a fortress. She is actually the newest Demon King hence the name of the era is referred to as Little Princess or LP, her Demon King name.

Antagonists

Demon Xavier

The demon who terrorized JAPAN in the past, and sealed by a monk named Geppei who later founded Tenshiism.

Apostle Shikibu

An apostle of Xavier, representing the element Water and the holy beast Seiryuu.

Apostle Rengoku

An apostle of Xavier, representing the element Wind and the holy beast Byakko.

  • Affably Evil: While calling him downright sociable would be a stretch, he's easily one of the more pleasant apostles, to the point most of his dialogue in the early portion of the game manages to get Rance to go away multiple times without pissing Rance off.
  • Bald of Evil: Pretty obvious when you see him.
  • BFG: That shotgun sure is big, especially compared to the much slimmer Tanegashima-style muskets.
  • The Dragon: Definitely stronger than Xavier when Xavier was awakened, although he curiously got permanently beaten fairly early.
  • Follow the Leader: He's the first one to be revived after Xavier appears.
  • Obviously Evil: As noted by Rance.

Apostle Madou

An apostle of Xavier, representing the element Earth and the holy beast Genbu.

  • Bald of Evil: Pretty obvious, too.
  • The Evil Genius: Comes up with plans to take care of the Oda house like bringing back the Soul Jar and Ishijiji. Can still be blinded with anger, though.
  • Mighty Glacier: His defense is definitely hard to break when you're fighting his true form.

Apostle Gigai

An apostle of Xavier, representing the element Fire and the holy beast Suzaku.

  • Blood Knight
  • Evilly Affable: Apart from having some respect for his host, Nanjou Ran, he doesn't really have any redeeming characteristics that we can see. Unlike all the other Apostles, though, most of his antics aren't full of squick and murder, so they're funny instead.
  • Gender Bender: In Rance Quest Magnum
  • HARD. GAY.: Fell in love after seeing Rance, making him the only guy Rance is truly afraid of.
  • Love At First Sight: To Rance, much to Rance's horror.
  • Mercy Kill: Delivered to Ran after she saved Souun. She did plead to Suzaku to save Souun after all. Souun delivers this as well to Gigai when they fight.
  • Noble Demon: He agrees to a fair fight (i.e. not turning into Suzaku) with Rance in exchange for a date. Even when Rance decides not to fight solo, he keeps his word and stays untransformed.
  • The Phoenix
  • Seme and Uke: He plays both ways.

Keikoku

A mysterious woman who is important to the plot in the IF routes, although she doesn't make an appearance in the main route. In most cases she manipulates events either for her love of luxury or to make things more interesting (read: unleash ogres all over JAPAN). She is a cursed human like Ryouma and Mori Motonari. It's nearly impossible to kill her since she can simply survive any wound or pick up any bits that get chopped off and stick them back on with no ill effects whatsoever.
