Sembaruthi (transl.Hibiscus) is a Tamil-language drama on Zee Tamil starring Karthik Raj, Shabana Shajahan and Priya Raman. It is a remake of Muddha Mandaram, a serial in Zee Telugu.[1] It is currently airing every Monday to Saturday during prime time.

Synopsis

The story about a rich, strong-willed and stubborn woman, Akhilandeshwari and her elder son Aadhithya's intense love story with Parvathi, a servant working as a cook and how issues spiral out of control to affect their relationship. And also his brother Arun and his wife Aishwarya supports them. Their marriage would be the plot of the story and how the pair faces various turmoils occurring in the form of Vanaja and her cronies forms the rest of the story.

    • The elder son of Akhilandeshwari and Purshothaman. Caring and Lovable Husband of Parvathi. He is a calm, intelligent and serious individual who is in love with Parvathi and eventually marries her, without his mother Akhilandeshwari's knowledge.
  • Shabana Shajahan [2] as Parvathi Aadithya
    • A young and beautiful village girl, who is employed by Akhilandeshwari as her home cook. She is eldest daughter-in-law of Akiladeshwari and Pursothaman She is dutiful,beautiful and naive but is also strong willed and determined at times .She saved Akhilandeshwari's family many times in many ways. She is also in love with Aadithya whom she marries later and becomes Aadhi's wife.
  • Priya Raman as 'Aadhikadavur' Akhilandeshwari / Akhila Purshothaman [3]
    • A rich, strong willed and stubborn woman, Akhilandeshwari is one who expects perfection in everything. She is the mother of Aadhi and Arun, and Mother-in-law of Aishwariya and Parvathi and wife of Purshothaman. She is the de facto head of the house. She is unaware of her son's love and eventual marriage to Parvathi. Although stubborn, she can be caring at times and is good at heart. Atlast She comes to know about Aadhi's Marriage to Parvathi.

    • Parvathi and Ganesha's father who is employed as the faithful driver of Akhilandeshwari's family who is working there for more than 25 years. He is loyal to Akhilandeshwari for her kindness and He Knows that Aadhi and His Daughter got married.
  • Sanjay Kumar Asrani as Purshothaman:
    • Akhilandeshwari's husband. Father of Aadhi and Arun and Father-in-law of Aishwariya and Parvathi. He is calm and patient, unlike his wife. He approves of Adithya's marriage to Parvathi.
  • Janani Ashok Kumar as Aishwarya Arun
    • Arun's wife and Youngest Daughter-in-law of Akilandeshwari and Purshothaman She is a weak-minded woman; initially hostile to Parvathi before her marriage to Arun, then starts caring for her and empathizing her. She is now aware of Parvathi and Adithya's marriage and she supports them.
  • VJ Kathir as 'Aadhikadavur'Arun Purushothaman:
    • The enthusiastic younger son of Akhilandeshwari and Purshothaman and Caring and Lovable Husband of Aishwariya. He is a lively man who is in support of his brother's love. At initial stage Arun was a playboy but, Arun is married to Aishwarya, whom he despised initially. Now they are closer in life.
  • Lakshmi as Vanaja
    • She is co-Sister of the Akilandeshwari. She is evil and Main Antagonist, cunning and always crafts plans to split the family and ruin Parvathi's reputation. She wants to take revenge against Akhiladeshwari, Purushothaman, Aadhi, Arun, Aishwariya and Parvathi. She is joint with Nandhini and plotting against them.
  • Dhashwanth as Ganesh
    • Parvathi's younger brother, Sundaram's son. He helps her sister in her love. He wants to become a collector and he loves his sister and father very much.
  • Sridevi Ashok (2017-2018) / Mounika (2018-Present) as Nandhini (Antagonist)
    • Adithya's ex-fiancée. Nandhini is a crafty woman who seeks to revenge on Akhilandeshwari's family for humiliating her. She belongs to the Nagapuri Vamsam (Enemy of Adhikadavur Family). She joins hands with Vanaja to take revenge against them.
  • Sumathi Sree (2017-2018) / Jayanthi (2018- Present) as Pattamma
    • A faithfull servent and cook of Akilandeshwari's family, who takes care Parvathi as a mother and she helps Parvathi from danger situations.
  • Singapore Deepan as Vadivelu @ Vadivu:
    • Relative of Vanaja. Comic and good hearted person who dislikes Vanaja and supports Aadhi and Parvathi's love.
  • Bharatha Naidu as Mithra (2017-2020) (Died in the serial)
    • Nandini's sister who is the other ex-fiancée of Adithya. Like her sister, she also seeks revenge on Akhilandeshwari's family, albeit secretly. She is the nemesis of Parvathi.
  • Shyam (2017-2019) / Saif Ali Khan (2020-Present) as Shyam:
    • Adithya's loyal and best friend. Adithya shares his feelings only with him and Arun.[4]
  • Jenifer as Uma:
    • Vanaja's simpleton niece who doesn't "think before she leaps." She is also a blabbermouth and foodie.
  • VJ Lekha as Sindhu:
    • Akhilandeshwari's Personal Assistant (PA) and Shyam's love interest.
  • Pradeep as Ragu
    • Aadhi's Assistant, who helps Adhi for the logo eye which was Parvathi's Eyes

Title

This title was taken from a 1992 Sembaruthi feature film starring Prashanth Thiagarajan, Bhanumathi and Roja. The English meaning of this title is Hibiscus.

Reception and impact

This show created a history in Tamil television by becoming the first non Sun TV show to top the TRP charts.[5] The show had marked history being dominating the ratings chart and maintaining its No. 1 position in Tamil Nadu for 24 weeks (from Barc Week 46,2018 to Week 21,2019 except on Week 49 '18,Week 3 '19, Week 13 '19 & Week 18 '19).[6]

Currently, it is giving a tough competition to Nayagi of Sun TV Roja with a minor change in its position in ratings.[7]

On August 2019, Zee Tamil held a grand event to celebrate the success of Sembaruthi.[6]

Lingustic Versions

The show is remade into Malayalam under the title Chembarathi (TV series) which is being aired on Zee Keralam and also as Paaru on Zee Kannada. [8][9]

The Series was released on 16 October 2017 on Zee Tamil and from 16 October 2017 on Zee Tamil HD. The Show was also broadcast internationally on Channel's international distribution.
