Political career
Muhamad Faisal entered the Singapore political arena in the 2011 General Election contesting as a minority candidate in the 5-man Aljunied GRC representing the WP which was led by WP leader Low Thia Khiang together with Sylvia Lim Swee Lian, Chen Show Mao and Pritam Singh. They challenged the incumbent People's Action Party team which was led by Minister George Yeo, Minister of State Lim Hwee Hua, Minister of State Zainul Abidin Bin Mohamed Rasheed, Cynthia Phua and Ong Ye Kung. The WP team won with 54.72% of the votes and captured a Group Representation Constituency (GRC) for the first time in the political history of Singapore. Muhamad Faisal was declared as a Member of Parliament of the 12th Parliament of Singapore on 9 May 2011.[1]
During parliamentary discussions over a Bill to amend the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act (MRHA), Muhamad Faisal engaged in a heated debate with Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam over separation of religion from politics.[2] Muhamad Faisal stated that he did not fully agree with the principle of the separation of religion from politics. He argued that while people "shouldn't use religion for the benefit of politics", it is inevitable that religion and politics are intertwined in the formulation of policies.[3][4]
