Aljunied GRC was formed in 1988. During the time it was under the control of the People's Action Party (PAP), it absorbed several constituencies that the Workers' Party (WP) had contested in and narrowly lost (namely the Eunos and Kaki Bukit wards of the Eunos GRC in 1997, as well as the Punggol East and Punggol South divisions of the Cheng San GRC in 2001). However, Aljunied GRC itself fell to the WP during the 2011 general elections, making it the first GRC to have been won by a party other than the PAP since the introduction of the GRC concept in 1988.
This GRC has been hotly contested in the 2006, 2011 and most notably the 2015 general election, where the PAP team consisting of former MP Yeo Guat Kwang and four first-time candidates lost by a close margin, garnering a vote share of 49.04%. From 2011 to 2020, Aljunied GRC was led by Low Thia Khiang. Prior to the 2020 general elections, Low Thia Khiang and Chen Show Mao retired and were succeeded by Gerald Giam and Leon Perera. In the 2020 general election, the WP won the GRC with 59.95% of the votes, a 9% swing from the previous election. Aljunied GRC is currently led by the Secretary-General of the Workers' Party Pritam Singh.
