Red
Red -- The Battler
"Me? I am Red! A Pokedex Owner from Pallet Town! A 'Battler'!"
The first protagonist of the series. He starts out as an arrogant Idiot Hero who starts out thinking he's better than everyone. It took a quick defeat from Mew before he considers learning and going to Professor Oak where he starts his quest. His first Pokémon is a Poliwag named Poli, while his starter is a Bulbasaur named Saur.
- Anime Hair
- Brown Eyes -> Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Character Development: Goes from being an Idiot Hero to a slightly Hot-Blooded ace.
- Cute Shotaro Boy: Remains as wide-eyed as ever even at age 16.
- Dressing as the Enemy: He disguised himself as a TR grunt to get some info.
- Fingerless Gloves: Finds a pair which are supposedly electric insulated in Silph Co. after defeating Lt Surge.
- Flung Clothing: Blue pulled off the TR disguise mentioned above. Red was also pretty much stripped over the course of FRLG.
- There was also the time when he suddenly pulled off his clothes in the RGB arc and jumped into the water in order to convince Green's Pokémon to relax, and when he went into the hot springs as well.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric with a dash of Sanguine.
- The Hero
- Heroic BSOD: In the first chapter of RGB and another one in FRLG.
- Hero's Journey
- Harmless Freezing: By Lorelei for about 2 weeks, which lead him to be displayed as a...
- Human Popsicle: He got better, but he got terrible frostbite on his wrists and ankles.
- Hot-Blooded: After growing out of his Idiot Hero demeanor.
- Hot Springs Episode: With Sabrina. No, not in that way. Though it did lead to an...
- Accidental Pervert: instance when Sabrina started leaving.
- Idiot Hero: He starts off as one in the very beginning of his quest, but later grows out of it.
- Invisible Family: He is the only dexholder with no known family.
- Kid Hero: Naturally all the dex holders count, but in order of appearance Red is the first.
- The Leader: Type IV/II hybrid of the Kanto Dex holders, and the Dex holders as a whole when they come together.
- Mr. Fanservice: Once he hits his teens, especially with that Shirtless Scene in the FRLG arc.
- Nice Guy/Easily Forgiven: He took a frickin' bath with Sabrina, the woman who stole and tortured his Eevee. He did initially suspect her of something, but when she said otherwise he let it go pretty quickly.
- He accepted Deoxys pretty fast despite the fact it nearly killed all his Pokémon. Granted, it could only talk through fighting before.
- Lt. Surge. I mean, he did torture him repeatedly. And what happens when they meet up in the Yellow arc? Red's like, "Yo, what's up?"
- However, there is a battle to decide the fate of humanity going on. It's implied that Red is up to speed on the alliance between the Rocket Admins and the Pokedex Holders.
- Red forgave Bruno too. Red received a direct kick to the stomach from a Hitmonlee, which was rather hard to swallow, but he still forgave him considering, you know, Mind Control.
- He would probably have forgiven Giovanni if he found out that he was the one who saved him in said "almost frozen to death situation".
- Lorelei who was the one who encased Red in ice and as a result he got severe frostbite but the next time they meet (roughly a few years later), he doesn't even mention it and appears to have forgiven her. Then again, there were more pressing matters at hand and Lorelei did help Red and Blue escape from the Beast Trio after Team Rocket threatened her home.
- Nice Hat: Red's hat almost never comes off. I mean, he swam and bathed in the hot springs with it on. Plus it never came off during all the training and aerial fighting he did in FRLG. To top it off, even when his jacket and shirt had already come off, his hat was still there till the last moment.
- There was that one time when his hat came off in RGB at the Safari Zone. It was separated from him for a whole day.
- Oblivious to Love: At first, he doesn't seem to realize that both Yellow and Misty have huge crushes on him. By the end of the GSC arc, he seems to have caught on and feels uncomfortable about resolving it until Gold gave him a way out. Plus he blushed like crazy when it was suggested that all three of them live together.
- Characterization Marches On: People seem to have forgotten that, during their first meeting, Red once thought that Blue was cute and had a crush on her. Likewise for Misty's maids, and even Misty herself when she first introduces herself to him.
- Red mentions that he shouldn't be focusing on girls after Misty nearly curbstomped him with her Starmie. So maybe his obliviousness is deliberate.
- Personality Swap: Red and Green's Pokémon in RGB arc.
- Red String of Fate: With Yellow.
- Ship Tease: Yellow, Misty and Blue in various arcs.
- Shirtless Scene: He gets one at the very end of FR/LG.
- Sleeves Are for Wimps: Since he dumped his jacket in FRLG. Also at the start of said arc, he was walking around without the jacket.
- Taken for Granite: He was the only dex holder out of uniform and not holding the Pokédex, which pretty much ruins their guise of being real statues.
- Take Up My Sword: After Red disappeared, Yellow used his Pikachu and Pokédex.
- Taking You with Me: In FRLG, at the end of the Mewtwo vs. Deoxys battle, while Deoxys was grabbing Red, Red insisted that Mewtwo fire the final shot even though he knew that the attack might literally go through him.
- We Can Rule Together: Twice offered to Red from Giovanni in RGB and The Elite Four in Yellow saga.
- Also, the above offers resulted in the Pick on Someone Your Own Size trope.
- Worf Had the Flu: Still in bad shape after being frozen by Lorelei, Red has to step down from the Viridian Gym leader's position, and, consequently, was out of action for most of GSC in order to recuperate.
Red's Pokémon
Poli (Nyoro)
Red's first Pokémon that he obtained when it was only a Poliwag. Sometime before the series began, he evolved into a Poliwhirl to save a drowning Red. He evolved into a Poliwrath to rescue Red from drowning once more after his Trainer was sent into the water by Lt. Surge.
- Bare-Fisted Monk: Secondary type.
- Making a Splash: Primary type.
- Kill It with Ice: Knows Ice Beam.
Saur (Fusshi)
Red's "starter" Pokemon that was given to him from Professor Oak after proving that he could bond and fight with it. He is a gentle and loyal creature but a powerful and versatile one as well.
- Green Thumb: Primary type.
- Poisonous Pokémon: Secondary type.
- Petal Power
Pika
A mischievous and initially stubborn Pikachu Red caught in Pewter City, Pika is one of Red's most used Pokemon.
- Expy: His initial disobedience and lack of evolving makes him one to Ash's Pikachu.
- Official Couple: With Chuchu.
- Shock and Awe
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: Suffers this in the Yellow arc.
- Troll: Pika likes to act friendly in front of certain people before shocking them.
- Poisonous Pokémon: Knows Toxic.
Snor/Lax (Gon)
A Snorlax that Red caught after the bike-riding race, Snor is a major powerhouse on Red's team.
- Acquired Poison Immunity: Has the Immunity ability.
- Big Eater
- Eyes Always Shut
- Heavy Sleeper
- Non-Elemental
- Stout Strength
Vee (Vui)
Once a genetically-tampered Eevee that could evolve and de-evolve into any of the first three Eeveelutions, Vee is now permanently an Espeon, showing its love and trust towards his trainer.
- Elemental Powers: Due to his former ability to evolve between multiple forms and back, he had a variety of these.
- Making a Splash: As a Vaporeon.
- Playing with Fire: As a Flareon.
- Psychic Powers: As an Espeon.
- Shock and Awe: As a Jolteon.
- Invisibility: Knew Acid Armor as a Vaporeon.
- Non-Elemental: As an Eevee.
- Unstable Genetic Code: Allowing it to freely change between forms.
Gyara
Originally Misty's Gyarados who was experimented on by Team Rocket, this Pokemon has since been given to Red and serves as a means of transport through water as well as boasting powerful attacks.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type. Ironically, he knows no Flying moves.
- Making a Splash: Primary type
Aero (Pte)
A Pokemon that Red revived from an Old Amber that he got from Giovanni. After being revived, Aero serves as Red's mode of aerial transport.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Primary type.
- Flight
- Fossil Revival
- Hard Head: Has Rock Head as his ability.
- Prehistoric Monster
- Pterosaurs Are Dragons: Knows Dragon Claw.
- Ptero-Soarer
Green
Green Oak -- The Trainer
(Blue in the English version)
"Trainers must train and sharpen their own senses, and be as one with the Pokemon in a battle."
He is Professor Oak's grandson and is Red's rival. His first Pokémon is a Scyther, while his starter is a Charmander. The current Viridian City Gym Leader. Does not nickname his Pokémon.
- Anime Hair
- Anti-Hero: Type III at first, before becoming more of a straight-up hero.
- Badass Cape: Sports one in the Yellow arc.
- Berserk Button: Harm and imprison his family? He'll only use his Pokémon as a virus to destroy your circuitry, bypassing any of your predicted inevitable outcomes in the process.
- Characterization Marches On: In the first few chapters he acted very much like his counterpart from the games and his anime counterpart Gary from the first season. This changed by the time he appeared in Pokemon Tower and he became a more serious character. (Somewhat lampshaded by Red: "You're not your old obnoxious self again...you're worse!)
- The Comically Serious: On occasion, especially when training Yellow.
- Dub Name Change: His and Blue's names were switched in the English translation.
- Dragon Rider: Charizard's technically a fire type but he can count.
- Early-Bird Cameo: His Pokémon know 2nd generation attacks, taught to them by Chuck.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic with a dash of Phlegmatic.
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: He does this to Red after Red loses to Deoxys.
- Grandfather In Distress: In the RGB and FRLG arcs.
- Green Eyes
- Informed Ability: He has some knowledge of martial arts, as Chuck stressed the issue of having to train's one self is just as important as training Pokémon. In a flashback, we see him holding a wooden sword. While Green is undoubtedly a very skilled trainer, he's never really seen kicking ass on his own.
- Actually in the RBG arc he's shown easily deflecting Red's attacks, and in the GSC arc he's shown fighting with some of the possessed Mooks in a couple of panels. His skills in fighting are hardly ever brought up anyway so it's not really a straight example.
- Invisible Parents: At least, he has his grandfather and sister...
- Leading to a case of Raised by Grandparents.
- Jerkass to Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Very much so in the RGB arc.
- The Lancer
- Personality Swap: Red and Green's Pokémon in RGB arc.
- The Rival: To Red in the first saga. He is actually the straightest one among all the rivals.
- Shipper on Deck: If he doesn't ship Bill with his sister, he is at least fine with it.
- The Stoic: He's generally the most down to earth of the Dex Holders, except when his grandfather is in danger...
- Taken for Granite
- Tsurime Eyes
- Would Hit An Old Lady: Towards the beginning of the FRLG arc, to Kimberly.
- Also his battles with Agatha.
Green's Pokemon
Scizor
Green's first Pokemon that he's had since it was a Scyther.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: Primary type.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type, pre-evolution.
- Extra Ore Dinary: Secondary type, post-evolution.
- Sinister Scythes As Hands
Charizard
The Pokemon that Green obtained from his grandfather as a Charmander.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Flight: Serves as Green's flight transportation.
- Playing with Fire: Primary type.
- Giant Flyer
Porygon2
A Pokemon that Green won at the Game Corner as a Porygon. Initially disobedient, but became loyal after Red and Green accidentally switched Pokemon.
- Artificial Pokémon
- No Biological Sex: One volume mistakenly lists it as male, though.
- Non-Elemental
- Ridiculously Pokémon-like Computer Program
- Virtual Ghost
Machamp
A Pokemon that Green has owned since it was a Machoke. He evolved into a Machamp after Red and Green accidentally switched Pokemon.
Golduck
A Pokemon that was revealed when Red and Green accidentally switched Pokemon. Serves as Green's water transportation.
- Extra Ore Dinary: Knows Iron Tail.
- Making a Splash
- Psychic Powers: Knows Confusion.
Blue
Blue -- The Evolver
(Green in the English Translation)
"I can fool more than silly boys!"
She's initially a sneaky thief that just seems to care for money. She is aware of her fanservice-ness, and uses this to her advantage in her cons. That said, she is actually quite competent and can defend herself via Pokémon and or by tricks. Her first Pokémon is a Jigglypuff, while her starter is a Squirtle named Blasty.
- Action Girl: The first one in the series! Though she was more of a sneaky thief.
- Anti-Hero: Type IV at first, develops into Type II overtime.
- Black Eyes -> Blue Eyes
- Classy Cat Burglar
- Cool Big Sis: To Silver and sometimes Yellow.
- Crazy Prepared: Blue' battles are made of this trope. Sabrina can come after you with hallucinations of your past? No Problem. Lorelei's capable of freezing people? Alreadly thought of. Up against your childhood trauma? Well~
- Dark and Troubled Past: Her and Silver's backstory in the GSC saga.
- Dub Name Change: Her and Green's names were switched in the English translation.
- Dressing as the Enemy : As Sabrina in the RGB series.
- Guile Heroine: Once she's unquestionably become one of the good guys.
- Fille Fatale: She uses her sex appeal to get what she wants. She flirted with Red and stole his stuff when they first met...however, upon growing up, she didn't become a Femme Fatale.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic with a dash of Melancholic.
- Gambit Roulette: Against Lorelei.
- Jerkass to Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Like Green, in the RGB arc.
- Killer Rabbit: invoked with her team, which she refrained from evolving until the FRLG saga, allegedly to lull her opponents into a sense of security.
- Little Black Dress: In the Kanto and Johto arcs.
- Little Miss Con Artist
- Little Miss Snarker
- Loveable Rogue: Possibly the most popular girl dexholder in the series.
- Magic Skirt
- Master of Disguise: Her Ditto can double as a mask.
- Also as a fake arm
- Ms. Fanservice: Just try to deny it after seeing her battle with Sabrina.
- Victoria's Secret Compartment: Pokéballs as breasts, loaded with Jigglypuff and Clefairy. Poor Sabrina.
- Naughty Is Good
- Nice Hat: Gets one as part of her new ensemble from Silver.
- Noblewoman's Laugh: Whenever Blue says something that will make Green comment what a pesky woman she is.
- Parents in Distress: In the FRLG arc.
- She's All Grown Up
- Ship Tease: Some with Green, Red, and Silver.
- The Smart Girl
- Snake Oil Salesgirl: It's one way she managed to get by in life.
- Stealth Mentor: To Yellow; she is the one who got Yellow to go on her quest to start with.
- Taken for Granite
- Trickster: Very, very tricky.
- Troll
- Weak but Skilled: While Blue isn't really weak, her Pokémon's levels are considerably lower than Red's and Green's. However, all her major victories were due to clever tricks and strategies, so she doesn't have to spend all her free time training and battling.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Called out by Sabrina, her ally at the time, for her deception of her during the battle with Lorelei. Blue attempts a justification, but Sabrina's not buying it.
- White Gloves: She made a pair for herself and a black version for Silver to keep their hands warm while they were under the Masked Man. She no longer wears them as of FR/LG.
- Why Did It Have to Be Birds?: Starts off the story with a crippling fear of bird Pokémon due to the fact that she was drafted into the Masked Man's service after being kidnapped by Ho-oh. She got better.
Blue's Pokemon
Jiggly (Puriri)
A Wigglytuff that Blue has owned since she was a small child.
Blasty (Kame-chan)
A Blastoise that Blue stole from Professor Oak when it was just a Squirtle.
- Backpack Cannon
- Jet Pack: Serves as Blue's flight transportation by becoming this for her.
- Making a Splash
- Turtle Power
- Weaponized Animal
Ditty (Meta-chan)
A Ditto that Blue uses to disguise herself.
Clefy (Pikkun)
A Clefable that Blue has owned since it was a Clefairy.
Nido/Nidory (Nido-chan)
A Nidoqueen that Blue has owned since she was a Nidoran.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Secondary type.
- Lunacy
- Poisonous Pokémon: Primary type.
Bull
A Granbull that Blue has owned since it was a Snubbull. Was once traded to Silver for his Horsea and then back.
- Bully Bulldog
- Cute Little Fangs: As a Snubbull.
- Non-Elemental
- Perpetual Frowner
- Punny Name / Lost in Translation: In the original Japanese version, Blue's Granbull is nicknamed "ブルー (Bull)". The pun is here is that Blue's name, when written in katakana, is written exactly the same as Snubbull's Japanese name, Bull. The only reason that we know that it even has a nickname is from Netkun and the fact that Blue calls her Granbull "Bull" even after evolving. This was not caught by translators and all official English translations refer to Bull by its species name.
Yellow
Yellow -- The Healer
"Humans and Pokemon can live together! I know it!"
She's the first main character in the manga not to be based on a game protagonist. Yellow appears in her own individual arc on a quest to find Red, who has mysteriously gone missing, and ends up defeating Lance. Her first Pokémon was a Rattata nicknamed Ratty caught by--you guessed it--Red. Her "starter" then was Red's Pikachu, Pika, and her "starter" now is her own Pikachu, Chuchu.
- Achilles' Heel: See Heavy Sleeper below.
- Action Girl: Despite her gentle personality, she definitely counts as one too.
- Badass Adorable: Textbook example.
- Black Eyes -> Green Eyes: with a shade of dark yellow in it, too. Perhaps Hazel Eyes?
- Beware the Nice Ones: Yellow is probably the most pacifistic and sweet-tempered of the Dex Holders who dislikes battling so much that she'd rather render her enemies immobile instead of outright hurting them, or just plain run away. However she knows when to get serious; threaten the Viridian Forest or try to Kill All Humans, and the gloves are off.
- Badass Grinding: Even without the Superweapon Surprise in play, she still managed to take injuries from her fight with Lance in stride, even overcoming him in spite of them. Training under Green and facing the crisis instigated by the Kanto Elite Four certainly helped this along.
- Canon Foreigner
- Chekhov's Gunman: She actually appears for the first time near the end of the first arc (when Red catches her Rattata for her, mentioned above), several chapters before her own arc begins.
- Compressed Hair: Whenever she wears her hat.
- Rapunzel Hair: Her high ponytail is already waist-length.
- Everyone Can See It: Everyone knows of her crush on Red, except Red of course. The end of the GSC chapter implies Red does know of the crush.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine with a dash of Supine.
- Hammerspace: That pouch thing can hold her sketchbook and fishing rod without them being seen. At times it looks like she just pulls them out of her back.
- Heavy Sleeper: Overusing her powers will force her to fall into a deep sleep, no matter how inopportune the situation. Worst situation of all was when she was inside the out-of-control Team Rocket airship. Granted, before that happened, she had to use her powers a lot more than she usually did.
- Late Arrival Spoiler: Yellow is a girl!
- Let's Get Dangerous: Yellow should be easy to beat in a battle, right? Her Pokémon are weaklings, she hates fighting...HOLY SHOOT HER POKEMON'S LEVELS JUST JUMPED UP ALL THE WAY TO THE EIGHTIES.
- Limited Wardrobe: From Yellow saga to Emerald.
- The Medic: Gifted with the powers of the Viridian Forest, Yellow has a special ability that allows her to completely heal wounded Pokémon. And all she has to do is touch them.
- Not even that, she just needs to be near them. Though this is showcased more often with Lance, who has the same powers as her but is more competent with them.
- Nice Hat: For a needed plot twist
- Chekhov's Gun: That hat was given to Yellow by Blue, along with the Rainbow and Silver Wings that are worn on it.
- Older Than They Look: Crystal, Gold and Silver, on different occasions, were shocked to learn that Yellow is a year older than them, as Yellow is almost a foot shorter.
- Parental Abandonment: Just where are they? (but at least the fisher uncle is there...)
- Pettanko: Helps out with the everybody-thinks-I'm-a-boy thing. Crystal, who is one year younger, clearly has bigger boobs than her. Hell, even Sapphire isn't quite as flat as Yellow as of the Emerald arc.
- Psychic Child: Can read the minds of Pokemon and has limited telekinesis. She is the youngest of the first-generation protagonists.
- Psychic Powers: Her Viridian-based powers include:
- Red String of Fate: With Red.
- Rescue Romance: How she fell in love with/started looking up to Red. It's never hinted that Red's ever realized that she's the same little girl he rescued from that rampaging Dratini all those years ago.
- Samus Is a Girl/Bifauxnen: She conceals her gender by wearing a huge straw hat that hides her ponytail. It's only revealed later in her arc that she is, in fact, female.
- Also, considering the Yellow chapter is the second, any instance of spoiler-marking her gender may make most of the fans groan, because You Should Know This Already.
- She's All Grown Up: In FRLG as compared to RGB and Yellow arc. Though she could still pass for a boy, and she's still shorter than Silver (and probably everyone else, minus Emerald).
- Ship Tease: Sprinkled liberally with Red and arguably with Silver in the FR/LG arc.
- Skilled but Naive
- Speaks Fluent Animal
- Taken for Granite: It's really disputable if her mind was conscious those past 3 months since she was already awake on the reversal of the petrification.
- Actually, since Silver states he was conscious during that time, so it's likely everyone else was too.
- Yeah but Yellow was asleep during the petrification. Jirachi probably healed all of them and their Pokémon while unpetrifying them. Since all their Pokémon were fighting in full health, plus Red's injuries and tear on his pant knees disappeared.
- Actually, since Silver states he was conscious during that time, so it's likely everyone else was too.
- Take Up My Sword: When Red disappeared, Yellow used his Pikachu and Pokédex.
- Weak but Skilled: Definitely counts as this for most of the Yellow arc; given the usual power level for Dex Holders, she might still be this (when not using her Super Empowering, of course)
Yellow's Pokemon
Ratty (Rat-chan)
Yellow's first Pokemon, which Red helped her catch after he saved her. His sharp teeth have proved useful in many situation.
Dody/Dodosk (Dodosuke)
A gift from her uncle, Dody primarily serves as Yellow's mode of land transport.
- Armless Biped
- Blow You Away: Secondary type. Also knows Whirlwind.
- Multiple Head Case
- Non-Elemental: Primary type.
Gravvy/Golosk (Golosuke)
A gift from Brock. Evolved into a Golem during the battle against Lance.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Primary and secondary types.
- Silicon Based Pokémon
Omny/Omask (Omsuke)
A gift from Misty. He evolved into a Omastar during the battle against Lance.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Secondary type.
- Everything's Squishier with Cephalopods
- Making a Splash: Primary type.
- Prehistoric Monster
Kitty/Freesk (Pīsuke)
Once a Caterpie that followed Yellow after saving its life. Kitty evolved into a Metapod then into a Butterfree during the battle against Lance.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: Primary type.
- Pretty Butterfly
- Flight: Ironically, the Butterfree species cannot learn Fly.
Chuchu
A Pikachu that Yellow captured sometime after the battle with Lance.
- Blush Sticker
- Distaff Counterpart: To Pika.
- Official Couple: With Pika.
- Not Quite Flight: She uses Balloonacy to Fly.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Eyelashes and a flower on her head.
- Shock and Awe
Gold
Gold -- The Hatcher/Breeder
"...Pokemon are my partners! We work alongside for the same goals because we are partners!"
He's the first hero of the GSC arc. Gold comes from a well-to-do family, can be quite a flirt and thinks of Pokémon as his family as he grew up with a lot of them. His journey begins when he sees Silver steal a Pokémon from Elm's lab and decides to catch him himself. Gold's first Pokémon was an Aipom (nicknamed Aibo in Viz's translation and Ataro in Chuang Yi's translation) and his 'starter' was a Cyndaquil (nicknamed Exbo and Explotaro in Viz and Chuang Yi's releases respectively).
- Badass Normal: Probably the most "normal" out of the Dex Holders.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Regularly hits on a pretty girl. And Bugsy.
- Determinator: Losing battles and almost his own life practically five times to the Big Bad? Does not care!
- Dressing as the Enemy: and...
- Flung Clothing: Happened when he wore and ditched the Guile armor disguise in the Emerald saga.
- Eyes of Gold: Duh...
- Goggles Do Nothing
- Handsome Lech: He flirts with almost every woman he sees in the GSC saga (and in one instance, he flirted with Bugsy). He seemed to have stopped doing so in the Emerald chapter.
- Heroic Sacrifice: GSC finale but got better.
- Heroic BSOD: In latter GSC.
- Hot-Blooded: There were even flames in the background when he showed intense desire to beat up the Masked Man.
- Idiot Hero: Out of all the Dex Holders, he's the only who hasn't completely grown out of it yet. Though to be fair, he is the only one acting his current age of 13.
- Sixteen as of HGSS. They grow up so fast...
- Indy Ploy: His are so blatant that mental objections fill the panel when he acts like he planned it all along.
- Gambit Roulette: In the Emerald chapter, against Guile. From an Indy Ploy.
- Improbable Weapon User: He is very good with a Pool Cue.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Not So Different from his rival in this respect, but he usually means well and just wants to show off.
- The Leader: Type III of the Johto Dex holders.
- The McCoy
- The Nicknamer: 'Strict Woman', 'Sexy Lady' and 'Prissy Boy' to name some.
- The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Goes on to give the police an inaccurate description of Silver just so Gold can be the one to catch him.
- Phrase Catcher: Whenever he brags about something, others would call him "Liar" behind his back.
- Ship Tease: Him and Crystal.
- Shonen Hair
- Tsurime Eyes
- Uncle Pennybags: Not as rich as Platinum Berlitz, but he is portrayed to have enough money to count as a literal rich idiot.
- Wild Hair: Whenever he takes his hat off, especially in HGSS.
Gold's Pokemon
Aibo/Ataro (Ētarou)
One of the Pokemon that lived in Gold's home. He was originally the first and only Gold took on his journey until Gold realized he lost (and later retrieved) Polibo. Started out as an Aipom and later evolved when it learned Double Hit.
- Everything's Better with Monkeys
- Non-Elemental
- Prehensile Tail: Gains two upon evolving.
Exbo/Explotaro (Bakutarou)
A Typhlosion that Gold obtained as a Cyndaquil when it asked to join his team to rescue his Totodile friend that was stolen by Silver.
- Eyes Always Shut: As a Cyndaquil.
- Playing with Fire
Polibo/Poltaro (Nyotarou)
A Politoed that was one of the Pokemon that lived in Gold's house since it was a Poliwag. After an incident involving Team Rocket, it was lost at sea but was later found and became a major part of his team. Gold initially intended for him to evolve into a Poliwrath like Red's but Polibo evolved into a Politoed after it was temporarily traded to Silver for his Seadra.
- Awesome Moment of Crowning: The King's Rock is what caused Polibo to evolve once it was traded to Silver.
- Making a Splash
Sunbo/Sintaro (Kimatarou)
A Sunflora that Gold caught as a Sunkern. She evolved into a Sunflora during the battle against the Masked Man.
- Eyes Always Shut: After evolution.
- Green Thumb
- Petal Power
- The Smurfette Principle: Only female member on Gold's team.
- Sunny Sunflower Disposition
Sudobo/Utaro (Ūtarou)
A Sudowoodo that Gold saved from a Rhydon during a bike race he had with Whitney. After helping it, Gold accepted it onto his team.
Togebo/Togetaro (Togetarou)
A Togepi that Gold hatched from an egg. Due to a problem with connecting to Togebo, Gold went a while unable to evolve it. During the battle against Arceus, Gold managed to connect with Togebo, and it evolve into Togetic and Togekiss to stop the rampaging Pokemon.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Eggshell Clothing: As a Togepi.
- Flight
- Like Trainer, Like Pokemon: Gold's ability to make his hatched Pokemon like him turned a Pokemon that is known for bringing happiness into a gambling delinquent.
- Took a Level in Badass: As a Togepi, he was badass, but won most of his battles through pure luck. Upon evolving twice, he became strong enough to face against Arceus and calm it down with a single attack. Although he didn't actually hurt it.
Tibo/Mantaro (Mantarou) and Remoraid
A Mantine that Gold encountered after being sent flying into the sea. He quickly befriended the Pokemon and uses it in conjunction with Crystal's recently-captured Remoraid to enable it to fly.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Flight: Achieves this with the Remoraid. Normally, the Mantine species cannot fly.
- Jet Pack: His method of flight transportation for Gold.
- Making a Splash: Primary type.
Pich
A Pichu that hatched from an egg that was produced by Red's Pika and Yellow's Chuchu. Has wild hair like his Trainer.
- Badass Adorable
- Blush Sticker
- Like Trainer, Like Pokemon: His hair.
- Punny Name / Lost in Translation: Like Bull, Pich is a nicknamed Pokemon who's name was not caught by any translators. When written in Japanese, Pich's name is only one character short from the Pichu's species name and would probably be considered a spelling error if not for Netkun.
- Shock and Awe
Silver
Silver -- The Exchanger
"No matter how much I yearn to be part of the light, darkness keeps dragging me back in."
The second hero and The Lancer of the GSC saga. He's an Anti-Hero and works in ways that aren't always very favorable. Has a secret, dark past, but is usually just a Jerk with a Heart of Gold. His first Pokémon is a Sneasel and his starter is a Totodile which he stole from the lab.
- Anti-Hero: Type IV at first, develops into Type II overtime.
- Arrogant Kung Fu Guy
- Berserk Button: Do not harm or even harass Blue. Silver will WRECK you.
- The Comically Serious: he comes across as a serious character in his early appearances...but then he saw his wanted poster.
- Dark and Troubled Past: The poor dear was kidnapped at a young age, which is how he met Blue.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Silver has been shown secretly working with Blue during the Yellow arc, but wasn't introduced until the GSC arc.
- Evil Redhead: Not really, just more of a jerk.
- Flung Clothing: When he ditched the TR wardrobe Sird put on him.
- Gray Eyes
- Idiot Hair: HGSS. Popularly known as his "hair horn". Well, in a certain fandom that is.
- Instant Expert: Learned Feraligtr's special move in less than a minute!
Gold (thinking in shock): It took me two months to learn that move!
- Let's be fair with Gold, though: Silver reveals that he has been aware all the time he was petrified, and Gold pretty much handed him the bracelet then.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He starts out as one, in contrast to his game counterpart, who was a Jerkass who developed into this.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: It turns out later that he's the son of Team Rocket boss Giovanni.
- Prophet Eyes:..might be temporary.
- Ship Tease: With Blue. A little with Yellow and Crystal too.
- Like Brother and Sister: The Viz Translation tones down the ship tease by repeatedly mentioning that Silver sees Blue as an elder sister. He even says to Gold "She's my sister!" as he's beating the crap out of him for accidentally patting Blue's butt.
- The Spock
- Squee: Fangirls reaction after the release of the HGSS arc.
- Taken for Granite: He gets better.

Crystal
Crystal -- The Catcher/Capturer
"Capture complete!"
She's the third and last hero/ine of the GSC saga. Her name is usually shortened to Crys. Crystal stars in two books alone before teaming up with Silver and Gold. She was given a Pokédex after taking the job of catching Pokémon for the Professor so she can help the run down orphanage she's helping look after. Has caught all non-legendaries and is currently working as Oak's assistant. Her first Pokémon was a Smoochum named Chumee and starter is a Chikorita, (nicknamed Megaree in Viz's version and simply 'Mega' in Chuang Yi's version). Each of her Pokémon have a star on them somewhere.
- Action Girl: More of a catcher but can battle fine too.
- Age-Inappropriate Dress: Her outfit in HGSS; forced on to her by her mother.
- Blue Eyes
- Brainy Brunette: If you count her Emerald artwork, where her hair is a dark brown. (pictured)
- Catch Phrase: (Viz version) "Capture complete!"
- Chuang Yi version: "Capture done."
- The Coats Are Off: She does this quite a few times before HGSS, most notably when rescuing Bill's boat from a wild Flaafy and Dunsparce and while re-training herself at Mt. Mortar.
- Composite Character: She currently wears
Mario'sLyra's outfit from Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver. How ironic. - Cool Big Sis: To Emerald, the orphans, Ruby and Sapphire.
- Extremity Extremist: She uses her Pokéballs by kicking them at her targets, a habit she developed after injuring her arms while training her capturing skills.
- Girlish Pigtails: Hers slant upwards. Though she's nowhere near childish.
- Gotta Catch Them All: and she succeeded, sort of...
- Heroic BSOD: Has one when she fails to catch Suicune and understand it in GSC. Her mother has to slap her and she has to start training from scratch when she finally reboots.
- Kick Chick: The one and only.
- The Kirk
- Modesty Shorts
- Only Sane Man: Between her, Gold and Silver, she's the most responsible.
- Ship Tease: She and Gold, though she has some with Emerald and Silver too.
- Shorttank
- Taught by Television: Watching Sabrina sure benefited her and the RSE gang in the Emerald saga.
- Team Mom: To Emerald and especially to the Violet City Orphans.
- Though she's more like a cool older sister to Ruby and Sapphire.
- Tsundere: Type B, mainly toward Gold (can you blame her?)
- She's like this in regard to catching as well, normally being a happy-go-lucky girl and suddenly switching to pure, stern professionalism when catching is involved (something Bill lampshades when he sees it happen: "Is this even the same girl!?")
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Out of all the Dex holders, possibly except Platinum Berlitz (who borders between black or dark blue), she seems to have the most unnatural blue hair in the cast.
- Though, of course, she originally had brown hair.
- Zettai Ryouiki: HGSS outfit
- And almost a Grade S too, if not for the fact that her pigtails are inverted and she doesn't have a Tsundere personality.
Crystal's Pokemon
Chumee (Mupyon)
Crystal's first Pokemon. A Smoochum that helps her catch Pokemon by stunning them with Mean Look, preventing them from escaping. Wears a star necklace around her neck that is shared with Megaree.

- Psychic Powers: Secondary type.
Megaree/Mega (Megapyon)
A Meganium that wanted to join Crystal's team after hearing about the exploits that Gold's Exbo and Silver's Feraligatr had with their Trainers. At first, Crystal didn't want him because she had a full team but decided to take him after seeing him show his determination. Wears a star necklace around his neck.
Bonee (Karapyon)
A Cubone that Crystal met after she was sent down a cliff from a wild Arcanine. He uses moves that prevent the opponent from fainting to make capture easier. Has star cracks on his helmet.
Monlee/Hitmonee (Ebipyon)

- Blank White Eyes: Although the fact that the mushroom has taken over a Parasect's body is never brought up.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: Primary type.
- Green Thumb: Secondary type.
Archy/Arckee (Winpyon)

Ruby
Ruby
"True beauty lies in the heart! The heart that is capable of love!"
The first male protagonist of the RS Arc. Despite being the son of Gym Leader Norman, Ruby is deeply fixated on Pokémon contests and the beauty and appearance of his team. Naturally, this has put him at odds with his father. First Pokémon(s) are a Skitty named Coco, Poochyena named Nana and Ralts named Ruru. His starter is a Mudkip named Zuzu.
- Ambiguously Gay: Turned out to be straight, though.
- Anti-Hero: Type 2 with shades of Type 1.
- Bishie Sparkle: Whenever he says something related to beautifying or contests.
- The Bet: Both he and Sapphire made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days. It ends in a tie.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: He does whatever he can to avoid direct Pokémon confrontation. Push him into it or remove him from the public eye, however, and you'll learn quick that five years isn't enough to dull his blade.
- Covert Pervert: Notable example includes him taking an unconscious Sapphire's measurements. Justified; it's for modifying a change of his clothes for her.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: I'm running away from my home because my father can't accept my
sexualitybeing a Pokémon Coordinator! - The Dandy
- The Fashionista: A male version.
- The Fighting Narcissist
- Forgotten Childhood Friend
- Idiot Hair: There's one under his hat.
- It Was with You All Along: His search for the ultimate Contest Pokémon. A Milotic, which Mimi eventually evolves into.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Rather impetuous and vain, but his heart's in the right place.
- Limited Wardrobe: Special mention for actually having a closet full of identical outfits, including multiples of his hat. Seen here.
- Kamehame Hadoken: No matter how much of an Asspull it may be, it. Was. AWESOME.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The Camp Straight to Sapphire's Tomboy. The fact that he's named after the pink or red colored Ruby, while Sapphire is named after the blue colored Sapphire accentuates this.
- May-December Romance: Marge/Courtney certainly seemed interested...
- My God, What Have I Done?: Does this after realizing the consequences of yelling at his Feebas, Mimi.
- Nice Hat: It also hides the scars he got from the Salamence listed below. The scars are his identifying mark without the hat in play.
- Plus many fans don't recognize him without the hat.
- The hat's the identifying mark? Seriously? And they don't mass-manufacture that style of hat?
- It's Ruby, he probably made the hat himself.
- Non-Action Guy: What he becomes due to believing...
- It's All My Fault: While he managed to repel a wild Salamence that attacked him and Sapphire five years prior to the bet, he dropped competitive battling after he mistakenly believes he tainted her "crystal-clear heart".
- Not in This For Your Revolution: At first, he refuses to help Sapphire save the Hoenn region from certain catastrophe.
- Conscience Makes You Go Back: Only to go back and help her a short while later
- Obfuscating Stupidity: More like Obfuscating Incompetence. See It's All My Fault.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: In the absence of an audience to view his battling prowess.
- The Runaway: His father practically hunts him down for doing so.
- Scars Are Forever
- She Is Not My Girlfriend : To Sapphire, He openly denies it when the chips are not down.
- Significant Name: He's named after the Pink-colored Ruby, which fits quite well with his status as the pink boy to Sapphire's blue girl.
- His birthday is at 2nd of July, in which his birthstone is ruby.
- The Spock
- Stoic Spectacles: Ruby actually has bad eyesight. When he's sewing, they may count as Nerd Glasses, but he also wears them when he's figuring out battle strategies. He actually looks pretty intelligent in them.
- Strong Family Resemblance: When he takes off his hat, he really looks like mini-Norman.
- Super Speed: his Running Shoes allow him to keep up with cars. Much better than their game counterpart, which basically amounted to researching running.
- Took a Level in Jerkass: Had two What the Hell, Hero? moments in a row prior to the climax of the Ruby & Sapphire arc; He first refuses to aid Sapphire in saving Hoenn from destruction because "It wasn't his problem" and then takes out his anger on his Feebas for losing a contest. It wasn't until after his Feebas abandoned him for his actions that he changed his mind.
- Tsurime Eyes
- Uptight Loves Wild: With Sapphire as Ms Wild and Ruby himself as the Uptight.
- We Can Rule Together: Offered by Marge/Courtney in R/S Saga, when she asked him if he wanted to join Team Magma.
- What the Hell, Hero?
- He demonstrates Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass on instinct before Sapphire, and yet he still refuses to help save Hoenn from the maniacs in Teams Magma and Aqua. Sapphire was not pleased at all.
- See My God, What Have I Done?. Wallace has to spell it out for Ruby before he does this.
- World's Most Beautiful Pokémon: See It Was with You All Along above.
- With My Hands Tied: His fight with Mack in the submarine, as he's backed into a corner and his arms are tied to his sides. He manages to escape unharmed, though.

Nana
One of Ruby's starter Pokemon. A Mightyena that is used in Cool rank contests.
Coco
One of Ruby's starter Pokemon. A Delcatty that is used in Cute rank contests.
- Cute Kitten
- Eyes Always Shut: As a Skitty.
- Lunacy

Ruru
One of Ruby's starter Pokemon. A Kirlia that is used in Smart rank contests. Due to being stuck with Wally for most of Ruby's adventure, she was unable to participate in contests and Popo was used in her place.
- Psychic Powers
- Synchronization: Her ability is Synchronize.
Zuzu
A Pokemon that Ruby got from Professor Birch. A Swampert that is used in Tough rank contests.
- Dishing Out Dirt: Secondary type.

A Castform that used to belong to Mr. Stone until he was put into a coma because of Team Aqua. She is used in Smart Rank contests due to Ruru being with Wally.

- Non-Elemental: Normal form.
- Playing with Fire: When using Sunny Day.
- Making a Splash: When using Rain Dance.
- An Ice Person: When using Hail.
- Weather Control Pokémon
Mimi
A Milotic that Ruby caught as a Feebas, much to his chagrin. After some Character Development, he found out that even though she is ugly on the outside, she is beautiful on the inside, causing her to evolve into a Milotic, a Pokemon he had been searching for. She is used in Beauty rank contests.
- An Ice Pokemon: Knows Blizzard.
- Making a Splash
- World's most Beautiful Pokémon.
Plusle
A Pokemon that Ruby encountered on the Abandoned Ship. It joined his team while on Mirage Island.
- Shock and Awe
- Wonder Twin Powers: With Minun.
Sapphire
Sapphire Birch
"What did you train yourself for?! Shouldn't it be to help those who are in trouble?!"
The female protagonist for the RS arc. The yang to Ruby's yin, she assists Prof. Birch in his studies and is more than ready for anything nature can throw at her. After an argument with Ruby, she sets off both their journeys with a bet - she'll see Pokémon contests in a new light if he can get all the ribbons in 80 days, while she seeks to get all the local badges in that time limit. This is inspired, in fact, by her own encroaching 11th birthday and the fact she wants to beat Red's record for defeating the Gym leaders. First Pokémon is an Aron named Rono while starter is a Torchic named Toro.
- Action Girl: So very much.
- Adaptational Badass: She's certainly more aggressive than May is as a NPC.
- Badass Adorable
- Badass Normal: One of a small list of humans who fight Pokémon unaided. She does have her own, but she's hardly helpless without them.
- Bare Your Midriff: Only when she's in her jungle outfit.
- The Bet: Both she and Ruby made a bet to accomplish their goals within 80 days. It ends in a tie.
- Blue Eyes
- Book Dumb: Subverted. Once she got the tough-sounding words out of the way, she went down as the first to score perfect marks in Roxanne's written exam gym challenge.
- Charles Atlas Superpower: Breaking a (weakened) fountain and sprinting while carrying two full-grown men and a woman near the start of the arc should give you an idea what she's capable of.
- Cute Bruiser
- Cute Little Fangs: Probably to emphasize how a Wild Child she is.
- Forgotten Childhood Friend
- He Is Not My Boyfriend: Hilariously with Ruby.
- Played straight in the beginning, but in the Emerald arc, she's pretty much ready to beat the shit out of him whenever he claims to have forgotten what exactly happened during the RS climax, including their love confessions to each other.
- Hero Worshipper: Red's achievements were actually the motivation for her journey in the first place.
- Hot-Blooded: Not as much as Pearl, Gold, or Black though (She may have started out on par with them, but she mellows out by the end.)
- The Ingenue: Was this when she was younger. It's also part of what crushed the younger Ruby so much when he thought he'd scared her.
- Innocent Fanservice Girl: She has absolutely no qualms in going around in a leaf bikini or taking her clothes off in front of strangers.
- Jungle Princess: She becomes this due to believing...
- It's All My Fault: That same Salamence in Ruby's tragic backstory cut him up before he chased it off. She blamed herself for her own weakness and inability to fight, and went native as part of her assistance in Prof. Birch's research to rectify that. Along the way, she engaged in some badass grinding, and only went from there after her wager with Ruby.
- Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy: The Tomboy to Ruby's Camp Straight. The fact that she's named after the blue colored Sapphire, while Ruby is named after the pink or red colored Ruby accentuates this.
- The McCoy
- Significant Name: She's named after the Blue-colored Sapphire, which fits quite well with her status as the blue girl to Ruby's pink boy.
- Her birthday is at 20th of September, in which her birthstone is sapphire.
- Skirt Over Slacks: When she's actually wearing clothes, anyway.
- Tomboy: Her goal is to beat all of the gym leaders in Hoenn, and she scoffs at the idea of participating in contests.
- Tsundere: To Ruby. Type A.
- Uptight Loves Wild: With Ruby as the Uptight and her as the Wild.
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: While normally fearless, a recount of her fight with Frontier Brain Tucker during the Emerald saga suggests she still has trouble dealing with Salamence, most likely due to her previously mentioned encounter with one.
- Wild Girl: Gold's nickname for her. Sounds accurate.

- Shock and Awe

Emerald
Emerald
"It's not the Pokemon battles that I like! It's the Pokemon... and the people who like Pokemon!"
The protagonist of the Emerald arc. He is the second main character in the manga not to be based on a game protagonist. A trainer who loves Pokémon battles but not Pokémon (at first), he utilizes a variety of gadgets and is a genius at item battles. He challenges the Hoenn Battle Frontier in his arc, claiming that he will subdue the Frontier Brains in the seven days prior to the opening ceremonies. This coincides with the appearance of Jirachi in the Battle Frontier. He's the only main character whose first Pokémon is actually a starter, in this case Sceptile.
- Anime Hair
- Anti-Hero: A Type I and III hybrid.
- Awesomeness By Analysis: Just one glance tells him the origin site of a Pokémon. Given just how he calms the (unnaturally) frenzied Pokémon in the arc, it qualifies.
- Hence why he quickly bonded with Noland after their battle.
- Artificial Limbs: His hand extenders & platform shoes can count as this.
- Berserk Button: Don't call him short or hurt Crystal. He will DECIMATE you.
- The Bet: He made a bet with the Frontier Brains that he will beat them all in seven days.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Just don't say it in his face.
- Drought Level of Doom: Emerald has to battle many times before facing the Frontier Brain in each facility, so it counts.
- Canon Foreigner
- Early-Bird Cameo/Chekhov's Gunman: He was shown as a shadow in GSC.
- Although you can't even recognize him since he hadn't adopted his distinctive hair by then, so it was more likely a Retcon that it was him in the first place.
- A straighter example would thus be the panel of his trainer card in the R/S arc.
- Friendless Background: The Loner Type.
- Green Eyes
- Hair of Gold
- Hero Worshipper: It was due to Crystal's selfless actions that motivated him to become a Dex Owner in the first place.
- Honor Before Reason: He refuses to acknowledge that the bonds he's formed with his Pokemon contribute to his victories, and to prove this point he exchanges his roster for a team of Pokemon he's never used before. To battle a frontier brain. After witnessing the Heroic Resolve of his Sceptile saving him from being defeated by Ruby.
- Later, when fighting his way through the Battle Tower to confront Guile Hideout, he refuses to break the rules of the Battle Tower despite fighting for his life and the lives of everyone in the Battle Frontier.
- I Just Want to Have Friends: Type B.
- Important Hair Accessory: His green gem in his forehead. Turns out the gem was used in a failed attempt to control Rayquaza earlier in the RS arc.
- I Work Alone: the first time he met them, he refused Ruby and Sapphire's offer to help in his mission.
- Improbable Hairstyle: Just look at the picture!
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- The Kirk
- Loners Are Freaks: Emerald was a loner prior to his debut, until Emerald finally comes to terms with his true desire to forge bonds between fellow Dex Owners as well as Pokémon.
- The Napoleon: The only character in the series shorter than Yellow! His equipment provides a marginally effective ruse, but it can't hope to last.
- All of the Other Reindeer: Said dwarfism also provided much teasing in his youth.
- Pint-Sized Kid: Taken to extremes.
- Refused by the Call/The Call Put Me on Hold: At first he was refused to be given a PokéDex, only to be given to him much later after undergoing both the Secret Test of Character and several months of Training from Hell.
- Significant Name: He's named after the green-colored emerald, which fits quite well along with his companions Ruby and Sapphire.
- His birthday is at 31st of May, in which his birthstone is emerald.
- Unusual Eyebrows: Look at the picture again.
- Urine Trouble: He has a rather weird habit of peeing from the windows of tall buildings.
- "V" Sign: He does this after he gets 17 consecutive wins in the Battle Factory.
- What the Hell, Hero?: When he recalled his three most trusted Pokémon and replaces them with another prior to the final Battle Dome Match, to which he loses horribly.
- You Are Not Alone

- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Making a Splash: Primary type.
Diamond
Diamond
"That's... not interesting at all!"
The first hero of the DP arc. His name is usually shortened to Dia. He's the fool in the comedy duo . He's always shown to be always eating and sleepy. But despite his foolish looking face, he is also quite sensitive to his surroundings and can detect the smallest things in a situation. First Pokémon is a Munchlax named Lax and starter is a Turtwig named 'Tru'.
- Adorkable: Face it - he's a mecha anime addict, loves to eat, a Butt Monkey, rather emotional, often unintentionally funny, yet still remains a big Badass. He can't be anything but this.
- Big Eater: He's eating practically in every chapter. Even while on board TG's plane!
- Blue Eyes
- Bodyguard Crush: It was a mistake when he and Pearl become Platinum Berlitz's bodyguards, but he still crushes on her.
- Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Diamond's the boke.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: He's the Wise Guy.
- Brilliant but Lazy: He's actually very intuitive for his age, but he rarely shows it.
- Can't Catch Up: Byron sends him into a personal training session with Riley at Iron Island for not being as strong or battle-smart as Pearl and Platinum, something even Satoshi Yamamoto points out. He makes up for this with his courage and empathy later on.
- Casual Danger Dialog: He's normally unfazed even when the times are dire. An example here.
- Character Tics: Every now and then he slaps his cheeks when he feels determined.
- Cheerful Child: He's the only one out of the Sinnoh trio who seems to act like he's really 12 years old.
- Chronic Hero Syndrome: When Pearl points out that they have no duty other than protecting Platinum, Diamond says he still wants to stand up to the bad guy anyways.
- Martyr Without a Cause: He still wants to fight despite there being generally nothing at stake.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Yes, he IS quite of a dope and can be really slow sometimes, but he makes up for it with his quick logic and can stand the ground on Cyrus when he needs to.
- Disney Death: He got better.
- Dork Knight: Despite not being a real knight, he qualifies for this.
- Dressing as the Enemy: Dia disguises himself as a TG grunt by mugging a grunt's clothes in the latter DP saga.
- The Dulcinea Effect: Sort of. He becomes fiercely determined to protect Platinum upon a day of meeting her.
- Friend to All Living Things: Byron is the first to notice that Pokemon become quite fond of him.
- Grew a Spine: One may think that he's just the quiet unassuming underdog of the comedy duo, but midway in the DP arc he reveals to Pearl that he wants to follow his own feelings and do what he wants for a change. He then goes on to be the biggest Badass of the DP arc.
- The Heart: His normalcy is what enables him to have the biggest heart in the series.
- Hero Worshipper: In a flashback, he was shown to be a fan of Red and has puppets of his Pokemon.
- Heterosexual Life Partners: Him and Pearl.
- Bash Brothers: This too.
- Idiot Hero: Even if you ignore his Obfuscating Stupidity, he still has shades of this.
- Inelegant Blubbering: Whenever he's crying, it tends to be this.
- Innocent Prodigy: He is much deeper and understanding than he appears.
- Iron Butt Monkey: As the boke in their manzai routine, he has to be.
- The Kirk: Until he develops into a McCoy at the end of the DP arc.
- Love At First Sight: One-sided case towards Platinum.
- Mighty Glacier: Pretty much all of his Pokemon are of the slow but powerful/tough kind, culminating in Regigigas, who's pretty much the epitome of the archetype.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: He knew from the start Platinum was not a tour guide.
- Ridiculously Average Guy: His main attribute, according to Satoshi Yamamoto.
- Ship Tease: With Platinum. The Bodyguard Crush helps.
- Skewed Priorities: Apparently, lunch always comes first.
- Taking the Bullet / Heroic Sacrifice: He pushes Pearl out of the way just in time as Giratina's Shadow Force hits him.
- Tareme Eyes
- Team Chef: Surprisingly a good one too. He can make high-quality Poffins with difficult berry combinations which were fed to Platinum's Prinplup, not to mention a cream pie for Platinum herself when she got depressed.
- Tranquil Fury: Possibly one of the reasons he's associated with Mesprit, the Pokémon of emotion.

Due to orders it was given in the past, it refuses to leave its Poke Ball unless it's necessary.
- Badass: It's a legendary, so it's supposed to be.
- Big Damn Heroes: According to Dr. Footstep, its job is to do this and refuses to leave its Poke Ball unless it's really, truly needed.
- Golem
- Non-Elemental
- Olympus Mon
- Super Strength: Strong enough to go toe to toe against Dialga and Palkia.
Rotom
A Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum encountered in the Old Chateau. It tricked and teased them by going into various appliances, but they eventually found it and trapped it in a television. Later, Dia and Pearl returned to the Old Chateau to protect Rotom from Charon and befriended it. After Charon was defeated, it joined Dia.

Pearl
Pearl
"To me, everything begins with one's willpower!"
The second hero of the DP arc. He's the straight man of the comedy duo and is very loud and shouts quite a lot. He's somewhat The Leader of the team. First Pokémon is a Chatot named Chatler and starter is a Chimchar named Chimler. His father is the leader of the Battle Frontier, and thus he has a great wealth of battling and training knowledge, which he often shares with Platinum Berlitz.
- Androcles' Lion: Helping that wild Luxray had its perks.
- Armor-Piercing Slap: His preferred method of admonishing a Dope Slap to Dia.
- Awesomeness By Analysis: can tell what attack a Pokémon is going to use just by looking at their movements.
- Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Pearl's the tsukkomi.
- Straight Man and Wise Guy: He's the Straight Man.
- Decoy Protagonist: No he's not as important to the plot as Diamond or Platinum. But early chapters would have you believe otherwise, and internally he's still vaguely their leader.
- Determinator: Well he is very closely related to Azelf, the Pokémon of willpower.
- Hair of Gold
- Heterosexual Life Partners: Him and Diamond.
- Bash Brothers: And this.
- Heroic BSOD: Goes into one after failing to protect Azelf from Team Galactic. He snaps out of it quickly, though.
- Hot-Blooded: Possibly moreso than Gold as he shouts almost every chapter.
- Keet
- The McCoy: Until he turns into a Kirk by the end of the DP arc.
- No Indoor Voice
- No Time to Think: A wild Stunky stink-bombs Platinum unconscious after multiple bike-riding failures agitate it, and she starts rolling straight downhill. Pearl saves her ass from a messy trip off Cycling Road by utilizing Prinplup and Chimlord's abilities - the sheer level of intrinsic knowledge and reflexive thought required drives this troper to manly tears.
- Ship Tease: With Platinum, especially in the early chapters.
- Somebody Else's Problem: He at first doesn't want to have anything to do with Team Galactic because he believes that his and Dia's only priority is to protect Platinum.
- Tsundere: Is this to Platinum and Dia, but especially heavy on the tsun to Dia, as shown here -- the moment is also a CMoH.
- Technicolor Eyes: Orange.
- The Leader: Type III due to his overbearing personality, though technically it's supposed to be Platinum.
- Unstoppable Rage: He unleashes his entire team (and Rotom) out at Charon when he thinks that Dia is killed.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Dia calmly calls him out for not listening to his opinions and generally treating him like his underling. He realizes his mistakes, however, and the two quickly patch up after their battle with Cyrus.
Pearl's Pokémon
Chatler/Chahiko (Perahiko)
Pearl's first Pokemon that he uses in his and Dia's Manzai skits. Tends to repeat everything says.
- Blow You Away: Secondary type.
- Make Me Wanna Shout: Knows Chatter.
- Polly Wants a Microphone
- Repeat What You Just Said
- Non-Elemental: Primary type.
Chimler/Chimhiko (Saruhiko)
A Pokemon that was supposed to go to Platinum's bodyguards but ended up with Pearl.

- Everything's Better with Monkeys
- Flaming Hair
- Playing with Fire: Primary type.
Rayhiko (Torahiko)

Zelhiko (Zeruhiko)
A Buizel that was caught in the explosion of one of Team Galactic's bombs and gained a distrust of humans in the process. Pearl captured it while training but the Pokemon doesn't want to listen to him.
- Blow You Away: Has the ability to create a tornado by spinning his tails quickly.
- Making a Splash
- Playful Otter
Dighiko
A Diglett that Pearl caught while training to battle Team Galactic.
Tauhiko (Taurohiko)
A Tauros that Pearl caught while training to battle Team Galactic.
Platinum
Platinum Berlitz
"...It's an interesting world out there. I've learned many things I wouldn't otherwise have if I'd stayed cooped up at home!"
The third hero of the DP arc and the heroine of the Platinum arc. She is the princess of the group and is supposedly on a journey to Mt Coronet to honor a family tradition. She acts very snobbish at first but is later revealed to be also sheltered and curious. First Pokémon is a Ponyta and her starter is a Piplup. She's lightened up quite a bit in the Platinum arc.
- Action Girl: She mowed down the gyms faster than Sapphire and is currently battling the Brains without losing yet! (Though in all fairness, Diamond and Pearl help alot)
- Bad Liar: Whenever she lies, it's ......not very convincing.
- Chekhov's Skill: Many of the new experiences she picks up on her journey end up helping her out in her Gym Battles.
- Chekhov's Boomerang: And one of her learned skills (mastering roulette) was used again in the Platinum arc.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: To Dia and Pearl. She acts all snobby at first and considers the two as just mere hired commoner guards but later warms up to them.
- Determinator: During her first Super Contest.
- Eyes of Gold + Gray Eyes
- Fan Nickname: "Platina," because Platinum doesn't sound like a girl's name.
- Lady of War: Is technically one due to her personality and prowess in battle.
- The Leader: Type IV of the Sinnoh leaders, though its sometimes shared with Pearl.
- Magic Skirt
- Nice to the Waiter: It takes time for her to act like this to Dia and Pearl, but once the truth got found out they eventually do become her True Companions.
- No Name Given: Her real name isn't revealed in the manga until the release of Pokémon Platinum.
- Oblivious to Love: Is completely clueless about Diamond's obvious crush on her.
- Only Known by Their Nickname: Before the Platinum Version game was released, she didn't want to give her real name to commoners. Her nickname may be "Ojou-sama", "Missy", or "Lady" depending on the version you're reading.
- The Ojou
- The President's Daughter
- Rich Bitch: A little bit at first.
- Rich in Dollars, Poor In Sense: As she is rich enough to (relatively) do whatever she wants, she has a little trouble in the Battle Castle, where only Castle Points may be spent, as this is the first time she has a limited budget to achieve her ends.
- Rule of Sexy: So she wears a hat, a scarf, long sleeves; stuff perfect for winter. But that doesn't stop her from wearing only a skirt, exposing her legs.
- The Smart Girl: Platinum says she reads ten books per day and she is very much associated with the Pokémon of Knowledge, Uxie.
- Brainy Brunette: Subverted, her hair color is a dark shade of blue.
- Badass Bookworm
- Ship Tease: With both Dia and Pearl.
- The Spock
- Spoiled Sweet
- Sugar and Ice Personality: Although by the end of the DP arc she's mostly just Sugar.
- Taught By Experience: How she mainly wins her Gym battles.
- Tsurime Eyes
- Zettai Ryouiki: Her black socks/stockings are above the knee unlike her game and anime counterparts.
Platinum's Pokémon
Rapidash
Platinum's first Pokemon and her mode of transportation. Started out as a Ponyta but later evolved.
- Butt Monkey: Poor, poor Rapidash. As a Ponyta, all he would do is lose horribly in whatever battle he was put in. It wasn't until Platinum's battle against Byron that he finally won a battle and evolved not long after.
- Cool Horse
- Flaming Hair
- Playing with Fire
Empoleon
The Pokemon that Platinum chose for herself while starting her journey. Started out as a Piplup and later evolved into a Prinplup and Empoleon.
- Everything's Better with Penguins
- Extra Ore Dinary: Secondary type.
- Making a Splash: Primary type.
- Pride: As a Piplup, she was very prideful. It died down a bit once she evolved.
Lopunny
A Pokemon that Platinum caught while on her way to Snowpoint City.
- Everythings Better With Bunnies
- Non-Elemental
Froslass
A Pokemon that once belonged to Candice. She was given Froslass during the battle on Spear Pillar.

Cherrim
A Pokemon that once belonged to Gardenia. She was given Cherrim during the battle on Spear Pillar.
Black
Black
The male protagonist of the BW arc, he is an eager boy who wishes to challenge Gym Leaders and the Elite Four. First Pokémon are a Rufflet named Brav and a Munna named Musha while his starter is a Tepig named Tep.
- Amulet of Dependency: Defied when it comes to Musha. Black refuses to have Musha help him focus in Gym battles, as he feels that he wouldn't be a good trainer if he were that dependent on his Pokémon.
- Awesomeness By Analysis: But usually only when his Munna's helping him out; otherwise he's far too distracted.
- Badass Bookworm: Surprisingly, he is very studious and reads up on various information on his own (but only when said subject is on Pokemon, of course). Before going on his journey, he looked up to see who the current Gym Leaders, Elite Four, and Champion were and also looked up his own Pokemon to see what they would eventually evolve into.
- Black has claimed that, since he was little, he would go to the local library to look up anything he didn't already know.
- Brown Eyes
- Character Development: After being the jerk who blew off his friends for his dreams, he obviously cares for White, Cheren and Bianca even more. Shown in newer chapters.
- Childhood Friends: To Cheren and Bianca
- Ditzy Genius
- Face Fault: As a consequence for his being Super OCD, he's rather prone to this.
- Green-Eyed Monster: When White is going to compete in the Battle Subway, he acts like this, since he had turned down his own chances at trying it out, only for White to do so herself. This leads to a minor case of...
- I Want My Beloved to Be Happy, as Black is encouraged to by Marshal to be a true friend and help White catch a Pokemon so that she can prepare for the Battle Subway. He even gives her Brav so she can have enough Pokemon to participate.
- Hot-Blooded
- Hyper Awareness: He has very good deducing skills, but only after his head is cleared with his Munna's help.
- Invisible Parents: Cheren mentions that he has both a mother and a father, but they were never shown.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He blew off his friends pretty quickly to start his adventure and would much rather obtain badges then take responsibility for the debt he placed on the B&W Corporation. That said, if he is called out on this, he will make an effort to fix that attitude.
- Large Ham: Just see his quote.
- The Leader: Type III among Cheren and Bianca.
- No Indoor Voice
- Ship Tease: He spent the whole night frantically searching for White, and when he sees a mysterious figure holding her, he brings out his whole team to fight against them.
- Shout-Out: His personality seems somewhat based on Black Star's, as shown with his constant shouts of YAHOO! and his dream to be the best trainer.
- Super OCD: Because he is incapable of thinking about anything but challenging the Pokémon League, he needs his Munna to eat away his dreams so that he can concentrate on the matters at hand.
- Fatal Flaw: And he really can't function without his Munna. In fact, just thinking too hard without it will cause him to pass out from exhaustion.
- To Be a Master: His goal.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Cheren verbally chews Black out for leaving him and Bianca in Nuvema with broken Pokedexes.
- Work Off the Debt: Black has a massive debt for destroying a movie set which White paid for. He is now stuck with her.
- Wingding Eyes: When he's analysing a situation after his mind has been 'blanked'. As seen here.
Musha
Black's first Pokemon that he uses to eat his dreams to enhance his senses.

"Anything from acting in dramas, films, ads, plays to printing, please leave it to the BW Agency!!"
The female protagonist of the BW arc, she is the president of a company that rents out Pokémon for commercial purposes, such as TV shows.
- Anime Hair
- Blue Eyes
- Doing It for the Art: Even if she loses money doing so, she always makes sure her Pokémon are in top shape and that her clients are satisfied.
- Genki Girl: She's very...eccentric.

- He Is Not My Boyfriend: She says this word for word when the massage spa manager mistakes Black to be her boyfriend and insists that she go on a cruise with him.
- Honor Before Reason: She'll do anything if her company's reputation is on the line.
- Heroic BSOD: After Gigi abandons her for N, complete with Dull Eyes of Unhappiness. Has since rebooted and is looking into the Battle Subway for an OS upgrade.
- Improbable Age: Though we don't know her age yet, she is most definitely not an adult yet she works as the representative of a company.
- Insistent Terminology: Tells Black to call her "Boss" ("President" in the Japanese version).
- The Leader: type IV/I of the Black and White duo, even though she can't fight.
- Letting Her Hair Down: Unlike most examples, this signifies her depression. Incidentally, fans all agree she's much prettier with her hair down.
- Lovable Coward: Gives off this vibe, considering that her first reaction to being attacked by Pokémon always seems to be screaming.
- Neutral Female: She flat out tells Black that she has no Pokémon of her own and that she never participated in a battle in her life. Is looking to hack out the "neutral" via the Battle Subway.
- Both the above tropes are somewhat ironic, considering that the female PC she's based on is a Memetic Badass.
- Oh Crap: She freaks when she realizes that due to someone else's carelessness she doesn't have the Pokémon needed for a shooting.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: She doesn't actually expect Black to pay the entirety of his massive debt and only wants his Tepig around for a few more shootings.
- She also gives him time to train for his own goals.
- Ship Tease: At one point, she notices that she has been talking about Black a lot, and talks about how he is actually pretty cool. It doesn't help that she tries to make up an excuse.
- Tomboyish Ponytail
- Took a Level in Badass: She started out as not being a Trainer. After the incident with N, White decided to learn how to defend herself but wasn't very good at it initially. After training on the Battle Subway, White goes from being unable to defeat a single Pokemon to actually managing to get far enough to face the Subway Bosses, Ingo and Emmet.
- Who Wears Short Shorts?
- Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Sort of. White screams in fear when she sees the Servine that N gave to her after he took her Gigi, but is ultimately revealed to be confusion instead of straight fear. Becoming species-phobic appears less likely.

- Childhood Friends: To Black and Bianca

- Gray Eyes
