Fullmetal Alchemist (anime)/Characters

A short summary page for characters from the 2003-2004 Fullmetal Alchemist anime. For the character sheet dealing with the manga and the second anime, see Fullmetal Alchemist.

Main Characters

Edward Elric

The protagonist of the series. Seeks the secret of the Philosopher's Stone so he can undo the mistakes of his past of trying to bring back his mother to life. The truth behind the Philosopher's Stone, and the connection to the secrets behind the country he lives in drives the story.

Voiced by: Romi Park (JP), Vic Mignogna (EN)

Alphonse Elric

Edward's little brother, he lost his body during an experiment that went horribly wrong. He survives in the form of a suit of armour, his soul joined to it through the use of a blood seal.

Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya (JP), Aaron Dismuke (EN)

Winry Rockbell

The Elrics' childhood friend, and Ed's automail mechanic.

Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi (JP), Caitlin Glass (EN)

Scar

A mysterious Ishbalan in a Roaring Rampage of Revenge against the State Alchemists that annihilated his people.

Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (JP), Dameon Clarke (EN)

Military

Roy Mustang

A colonel in the military, he is the third most important protaganist in the series behind the Elric brothers. He seeks to become the Fuhrer so he can fix the country, and spread his ideals to the people. And by that, we mean make all the women in the military wear miniskirts.

Voiced by: Tohru Ookawa (JP), Travis Willingham (EN)

Riza Hawkeye

Roy's trusted second-in-command and bodyguard, Lt. Hawkeye's calm, collected demeanor and remarkable sharpshooting skills earn her the respect and fear of her fellow officers.

Voiced by: Michiko Neya (JP), Colleen Clinkenbeard (EN)

Fuhrer President King Bradley

The ruler of Amestris. Fuhrer is his military title, he is also the President of the Nation. His name is King, it isn't a title. He came to rule Amestris after leading his nation out of a bloody civil war and setting up a military dictatorship. He is also the Homunculus Pride and Dante's second-in-command. And in The Movie it turns out he's the alternate universe's version of Fritz Lang. Who knew?

Voiced by: Hidekatsu Shibata (JP), Ed Blaylock (EN)

Maes Hughes

A rather quirky officer working in the records department. He develops something of a parental relationship with the Elric brothers, and assists both Mustang and the Elric brothers in their respective missions. Contrary to his appearance, he is not a man to trifle with.

Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (JP), Sonny Strait (EN)

Alex Louis Armstrong

Major Alex Louis Armstrong, the Strongarm Alchemist! Heir to the Armstrong fortune!

Voiced by: Kenji Utsumi (JP), Christopher Sabat (EN)

Frank Archer

An official from the military court who replaces Maes Hughes after his untimely death. Unlike his predecessor, he is an incredibly cold and vicious man and is known for his love of war.

Voiced by: Show Hayami (JP), Troy Baker (EN)

  • Ambiguously Gay: Archer seems very content on having Kimbley work under him as a personal assistant, and they are both heard humming the exact same tune, implying they must have to spend a lot of time together. The lines are also changed in the dub to have Archer launch his attack in Lior because Scar thought he could do what he wanted, where in the sub Archer launches his attack because Scar killed Kimbley. Ed even lampshades it in the sub.
  • Arm Cannon: After his restructuring, his mechanical arm features a built-in machinegun.
  • Canon Foreigner: Is completely original to the 2003 anime.
  • Colonel Badass: He certainly thinks he's one of these, although the fandom might disagree. To be fair to him, he is very cool under fire, at least before his upgrades. Still, not nearly as Badass as he thinks he is.
  • Cybernetics Eat Your Soul: Okay, he was already pretty damn evil, but his automail restructuring did not help the situation, making him more unstable than ever.
  • Cyborg: After he loses half his body in the Liore campaign, he is rebuilt as one of these. Includes most of his body on that side, as he was effectively bisected down the middle. Now how the Hell did they pull that off in the 1920s? Related tropes include:
  • The Dragon: To Pride, arguably.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Shot in the back by Hawkeye while attempting to murder Roy.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette
  • General Ripper
  • Glory Hound
  • Good-Looking Privates: He's an evil son of a bitch, but at least he's an attractive one, albeit in a rather cold kind of way. At least, before he received his injury in Lior.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Attempts to be one, with some success, but largely relies on his position and government connections rather than genuine ability. Still reasonably effective though.
  • My Government Right Or Wrong: Is fully aware that Bradley is a homunculus and honestly doesn't care. He remains loyal to the end.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Often uses his position to frustrate Roy and the brothers' investigations.
  • Obviously Evil
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Kimbley's Red.
  • Sanity Slippage: Loses quite a bit of his cool after his rebuilding.
  • Smug Snake: Right down to the smugly superior tone of voice. Of the relatively high-functioning variety, though, as he's not that incompetent.
  • Sociopathic Soldier
  • The Sociopath
  • War Is Glorious: His driving belief.
  • We Can Rebuild Him: See Cyborg, above.
  • We Can Rule Together: He offers Izumi a chance to join the military in global conquest. Predictably, she tells him to shove it.

Basque Grand

A Colonel during the Ishbal Civil War, who was in charge of it. He was pretty much just your generic General Ripper (even if he didn't become a real General until after the war). He shows up mainly to give Ed top secret information, sometimes in front of a bunch of Red Shirts. He gets killed when Scar simply walks up to him and kills him. Ironically, the current picture is not of Basque Grand, but of Envy impersonating him.

Voiced by: Shin Aomori (JP), R. Bruce Elliott (EN)

Jean Havoc

One of Mustang's closest subordinates. Before joining the army he was just your typical country boy.

Voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), Mike McFarland (EN)

Vato Falman, Kain Fuery, and Heymans Breda.

Mustang's other subordinates, a trio of officers that fill out various functions. Their loyalty to Mustang is unquestionable.

Falman voiced by: Takehiro Norozono (JP), Kyle Hebert (EN)
Fuery voiced by: Tetsu Shiratori (JP), Kevin M. Connoly (EN)
Breda voiced by: Tomoyuki Shimura (JP), Josh Berry (EN)

Maria Ross

Armstrong's subordinate. Serves as one of Edward and Alphonse's bodyguards during their investigations in Central.

Voiced by: Mitsuki Saiga (JP), Meridith McCoy (EN)

Denny Brosh

Ed and Al's other bodyguard, his carefree nature combines unexpectedly well with his serious partner Maria.

Voiced by: Misao Harada (JP), Jim Foronda (EN)

Scheska

A young and cute librarian with a prodigious visual memory. Her investigations will come handy more than once...

Voiced by: Naomi Wakabayashi (JP), Gwendolyn Lau (EN)

Homunculi

Lust

As beautiful as she is deadly, Lust is eventually revealed to be the failed transmutation of the woman loved by both Scar and his brother.

Voiced by: Yuko Sato (JP), Laura Bailey (EN)

  • Alas, Poor Villain Lust in this version committed many crimes in pursuit of her goal, which in this version was to become human. She was even wise enough to realize that Dante was never going to honor the deal and use the Philosopher's Stone to make her or any of them human, so she decides to try helping Ed and Al by assisting them in taking down the other humonculi. With her help they manage to weaken Sloth, but thanks to Sloth manipulating Al, she escapes and then Wrath arrives and thanks to him being able to use alchemy, uses the same method to drain all the red stone shards from Lust, and then he executes her. Before dying, she relents that maybe one of the reasons she was so desperate to become human was, because she both feared and longed for death, hoping that she might gain a soul which would mean she was free.
  • Anti-Villain When she finally realizes that Dante is just manipulating them, she becomes this until her demise.
  • Artificial Human A Homonculus.
  • Badass Long Hair
  • Beast and Beauty: With Gluttony.
  • Beta Test Baddie
  • Broken Bird She does some terrible things over the course of her life, and we find out that it was all because of how desperate she was to become human.
  • Cloning Blues: Wonders about her past existence as Scar's brother's lover.
  • The Corrupter: She initially influenced people to create the Philosopher's Stone.
  • Dark Action Girl: Initially. Then she gets offed by Wrath, of all people.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose In Life: Sorta.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: As for most homunculi.
  • Face Heel Door Slam See High Heel Face Turn. Upon defecting, she helps Ed trap and weaken Sloth, but thanks to Sloth manipulating Al, she manages to escape and Lust is left to deal with Wrath. At first she had the upper hand, but he trapped her in the same way they used to weaken Sloth, and then Wrath executes her.
  • High Heel Face Turn She's the first to begin to question if Dante is really going to uphold her end of the bargain, but after hearing the conversation between Hoenheim and Dante about their bodies and how Dante wants to use the Philosopher's Stone to continue to switch to new bodies, she turns on Dante and the other Homonculi in favor of helping Ed and Al, hoping that they will truly make her human if she did.
  • Femme Fatale
  • Femme Fatalons
  • Manipulative Bitch: She does encourage people to go after the Philosopher's Stone. Lujon's death, however...
  • Ms. Fanservice Helloooooooooooooooo... Her name is LUST what do you expect?
  • Pinocchio Syndrome: This seems even more important to her than the other homunculi.
  • Pretty in Mink: Just look at the pic!
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She is nice compared to her manga counterpart.
  • Redemption Equals Death: She gets "sealed" shortly after making a deal with the Elric brothers.
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
  • Vapor Wear
  • Wolverine Claws

Gluttony

A simpleton who loves to eat, and will eat anything. Has an odd, symbiotic relationship with Lust.

Voiced by: Yasuhiro Takato (JP), Chris Cason (EN)

Envy

A misanthropic, psychopathic shape-shifter, with a hate-on for the entire human race, and a sneering contempt for the other Homunculi. If he can Kick the Dog, he will. Turns out that he's really the failed transmutation of Hohenheim's first born son, the oldest Homunculus and The Dragon to the Big Bad.

Voiced by: Mayumi Yamaguchi (JP), Wendy Powell (EN)

Greed

A Homunculus so greedy he won't play second fiddle to anyone, even his creator, he is a failed transmutation by Dante of a lover.

Voiced by: Junichi Suwabe (JP), Chris Patton (EN)

Sloth

As the Fuhrer's secretary Juliet Douglas, she infiltrates the inner reaches of the military. She is revealed to be the failed human transmutation of Trisha Elric.

Voiced by: Yoshino Takamori (JP), Lydia Mackay (EN)

Wrath

A hot-tempered, needy child, revealed to be the failed transmutation of Izumi Curtis' dead son.

Voiced by: Nana Mizuki (JP), Luci Christian (EN)

Pride

Probably the most advanced of Homunculi in that he can age. He's actually the Fuhrer King Bradley, the ruler of Amestris.

Others

Dr. Tim Marcoh

A state alchemist who served in Ishbal, and creator of the red crystals. Due to his experience in the war he deserts the military, living a quiet life as a country doctor, until trouble comes knocking on his door.

Voiced by: Koji Totani (JP), Brice Armstrong (EN)

Izumi Curtis

Mentor to the Elric brothers, she taught them both alchemy and martial arts, both of which she is a master. Despises State Alchemists. Easily the most Badass character in the series.

Voiced by: Shoko Tsuda (JP), Christine Auten (EN)

Zolf J. Kimbley

A former State Alchemist who participated in the Ishbal war. Kimbley is a psychopath and a sadist, believing that "people are empty, worthless beings". He does, however, have some respect for the chemical properties of human beings: he specializes in transmuting things and people into explosives.

Voiced by: Yuji Ueda (JP), Eric Vale (EN)

Barry the Chopper

A serial killer that goes after young women, he gets taken down by Edward (after a rather terrifying encounter) and arrested. He ends up as one of the guards of the hidden laboratory used to create the red stones.

Voiced by: Kentaro Ito (JP), Jerry Jewell (EN)

Rose Thomas

A young girl that the Elrics meet in Lior. She is an orphan whose lover, Cain, has recently died. The High Priest Colonello has promised to revive him, and she becomes very disillusioned when Edward exposes him as the fraud that he is. However, things got even worse as time passed...

Hohenheim of Light

The Elrics' father, a renowned alchemist who left them and their mother when they were little.

Voiced by: Masashi Ebara (JP), Scott McNeil (EN)

Dante

An elderly woman who lives in a mansion in the woods with her current student Lyra, and Izumi's alchemy teacher. As the entry shows, the canny reader might suspect something. Revealed to be the creator of the Homunculi, using them as pawns to retain her immortality. She is the former lover (possibly wife) of Hohenheim and the mother of his first son, who currently serves her as the Homunculus Envy. She then takes over poor Lyra's body to make her goals come true...

Voiced by: Kazuko Sugiyama (JP), Cindee Mayfield (EN)

  • Abusive Mom: Arguably, to Envy, whom she sees as a tool rather than a son. At best, she is apathetic; at worst, she is emotionally manipulative.
  • Big Bad
  • Body Surf: Dante plans to do this when she learns that her bodies are decaying at an alarming rate. Poor Lyra and Rose.
  • The Cameo: Dante pops up in episode 58 of Brotherhood, as well as in the "Let's Nab Oprah!" episode of The Boondocks.
  • The Chessmaster
  • Driven to Villainy: If the flashback dealing with her past is anything to go by, she was originally a far more sympathetic individual, and she deeply and genuinely loved Hohenheim. Once he left her side, she was forced to fend for herself and became so embittered that she ultimately resorted to horrific means to maintain her immortality, slowly turning her into the Complete Monster we see in the current timeline.
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Once she transfers herself to Lyra.
  • Evil Is Petty: She's murdering thousands of people in order to try and live a few more years. Jeez.
  • Evil Matriarch: Toward the homunculi.
  • Evil Mentor: To Izumi
  • Evil Old Folks
  • Expy:Dante shares many similarities with Father. Both, at one point, had close relationships with Hohenheim dating back several centuries. Both "shared" the secret of eternal life with Hohenheim by means of the Philosopher's Stone. Finally, both plan to turn mass numbers of people into Stones in order to become "perfect" beings.
    • It is also important to note that Dante and Father, despite their shared desire to become a perfect being, have very different personalities and characterizations. Dante is a petty, horrendously selfish human who relies on emotional abuse to control her minions, whereas Father is a calculating, almost godlike creature who has literally shed his emotions.
  • Faux Affably Evil: She organizes her homunculi minions like a family and defends Sloth from Envy's teasing when they first find her. Before being revealed as the Big Bad, she provides Izumi with medicine and provides the Elrics with some helpful guidance. However, it soon becomes clear that she only cares about herself.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Greed finds her old body in a rather bad state (it's not shown exactly how).
  • Grand Theft Me
  • Hypocrite: Dante callously tells Ed that people who work hard hardly get anything, but she whines like a sore loser once her own efforts are ruined.
    • Not to mention her spiel about the evils of mankind and the horrible things people would do to each other if they got their hands on something as powerful as the Philosopher's Stone fall a little flat when you consider that she herself has instigated what are presumably the worst atrocities in Amestrian history.
  • Immortality Immorality
  • It's All About Me
  • Just Desserts
  • Lack of Empathy: It's All About Me when you're Dante.
  • Manipulative Bitch
  • Meaningful Name: In a series with antagonists named after the Seven Deadly Sins, a character with the name Dante would pretty much have to be their leader. Of course, it's made clear before her introduction (through Izumi's dialogue with the Elrics and Envy's with the other homunculi) that Dante is most definitely not the nice old lady that she seems to be. Considering some revelations made late in the series, it's entirely possible that she knew about this and took on the name herself.
  • Misanthrope Supreme
  • Narcissist: To quite ridiculous extremes.
  • Never Found the Body: Because Gluttony devours her, of course. Before the movie aired, a few fans thought it was a case of He's Just Hiding and expected her to return somehow, but it's been confirmed that she's dead.
  • Nietzsche Wannabe
  • Not So Harmless: She hardly seems like a force to be reckoned with when first introduced, but it becomes clear that she's one of the most powerful and deadly alchemists in the series.
  • Old Master:Even at Dante's advanced age Izumi seems to be respectful of her. And that was only what she showed as a public persona.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Due to being a body surfer.
  • Shadow Archetype: To Ed, most effective shown in their confrontation towards the end of the series.
  • Showing Off the New Body: After taking the body of her young and beautiful student, Lyra.
  • Smug Snake: It's All About Me meets The Sociopath meets Evil Is Petty. Why yes, she does qualify. Why do you ask?
  • The Sociopath
  • The Family That Slays Together
  • The Unfought: Ed and Al never engage in a true battle with her. She has a very brief struggle with Ed before starting her Hannibal Lecture, but it literally lasts for less than thirty seconds before Envy takes over. Instead of fighting them after her plans get derailed, she escapes in order to get Pride to take her place. Most likely justified, though, considering the state of her vessel.
  • Vain Sorceress
  • Villainous Breakdown: She has a surprisingly calm one during her escape on the elevator.
  • Walking Spoiler

Lyra

A young state alchemist who serves as the enforcer of Lieutenant Yoki during her first appearance. Later on in the series, she reappears as the newest student of Dante.

Voiced by: Yumi Kakazu (JP), Monica Rial (EN)

  • Blow You Away: She has wind-based alchemy powers.
  • The Cameo: Shows up briefly in the movie. This could probably count as another example for Dante, as well.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen
  • Grand Theft Me: Suffers this at the hands of Dante.
  • Heel Face Turn: After leaving the military and becoming Dante's student, she acts much more friendly and apologizes to the Elrics for her actions.
  • Zettai Ryouiki: Miniskirts and boots version.

The Chimeras

Law, Dorochete, Bido and Marta. Half-human, half-animal beings created through illegal alchemical proceedures, they worked for the military in specialist roles before finding much more fulfilling work with Greed.

Law voiced by: Yuji Ueda (JP), John Gremellion (EN)
Dorochete voiced by: Yasunori Matsumoto (JP), John Burgmeier (EN)
Bido voiced by: Greg Ayres (EN)
Marta voiced by: Rumi Kasahara (JP), Tiffany Grant (EN)

Shou Tucker

The “Sewing Life Alchemist,” whom Ed and Al meet with while Ed is studying for his State Alchemist exams. Ed stays at his house during that time and plays with Nina, but shortly after he passes, Tucker transmutes Nina and Alexander into a chimera. He is said to have been executed for this crime, but ends up in the military’s employ, working on a way to bring Nina back.

Conqueror of Shamballa

Dietlinde Eckhart

The chairman of the Thule Society who acts as the primary antagonist of Conqueror of Shamballa. She sees the people of Edward's world as monsters and believes that they must be slaughtered.

Voiced by: Kazuko Katou (JP), Kelly Manison (EN)

Noa

A young gypsy woman whom Ed encounters in our world.

Voiced by: Miyuu Sawai (JP), Leah Clark (EN)

Alfons Heiderich

A boy whom Edward also becomes friends with in our world. He has a huge and beautiful dream and needs to fulfill it soon... because he's dying of an illness.

Voiced by: Shun Oguri (JP), Jason Liebrecht (EN)
