Sima Yi
"The Virtuoso With Hidden Ambition"
"I have yet to meet anyone who can withstand the brilliance of my strategies."
Voiced by: Tsuyoshi Takishita (Japanese), Kyle Hebert (English)
Born: 179
Died: 251
Japanese spelling: Shiba'i
Age: 24
Height: 5'10" (177cm)
Arguably Wei's greatest strategist, Sima Yi planted the seeds for the founding of the Jin Kingdom from the ashes of Wei. He serves under both Cao Cao and later Cao Pi. While loyal to Wei, his ambition was to one day establish his own kingdom.
He is known for his maniacal laughter and insulting friend and foe alike as "Fool!" or "Imbecile!" Prideful of his intellect and believing that he has an unsurpassed wit, he regards Zhuge Liang as a worthy opponent.
- Ascended Extra - Patriarch of his own kingdom in DW7.
- Demoted to Extra - Historically, it happened. It was just omitted 'till 7.
- Bishonen
- Card-Carrying Villain - Until DW6, he was a hair shy of a full-blown Evil Overlord on a quest to Take Over the World for shits and giggles. Sixth and seventh installments moved him out of this territory by giving him a more human motivation and character growth.
- Catch Phrase - He likes to remind you that you are an imbecile!
- Dishing Out Dirt - His Tome Special in DW6 is to drop boulders.
- Evil Counterpart - Played up as this to Zhuge Liang.
- Evil Laugh - Practically his other catchphrase.
- Feathered Fan Of Doom - Until DW6, though he gets it back in 7.
- Razor Floss - His weapon in DW6, which has the strings just emerge from his fingers. He does however use them in his Musou attacks in 7.
- Foe Yay - With Zhuge Liang.
- Frickin' Laser Beams
- Ho Yay - With Cao Pi
- Large Ham
- Laughing Mad - Whilst well-known for his Evil Laugh from pretty much DW3 onwards, it was only in DW6 that he got hit with this. Seems to be back on his medication as of DW7.
- Lex Lang - DW4
- The Patriarch
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech - Gives these out like candy in Jin's musou mode.
- The Rival - To Zhuge Liang
- Sanity Slippage - Related to Laughing Mad, above - he started off in DW6 as very reluctant to take any part in the chaos sweeping the land until being eventually press-ganged by Cao Cao into service, but soon got a taste for ambition from Cao Cao, as well as a rival in Zhuge Liang. It pretty much went downhill from there. Although he never went completely mad; his ending has him quite reasonable, although just the previous scene he took rather too much pleasure in having beaten and killed Cao Cao.
- Smug Snake
- The Starscream
- The Strategist - Probibly Wei's best no less.
- Treacherous Advisor
- Tsundere - And how! Just bond with him in DW7. Bonus points if you let yourself get injured in battle.
- The Unfettered - Takes the pragmatist approach of the Cao clan Up to Eleven.
- What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: His weapon in DW6.
- Heres a hint: People Puppets.
- Worthy Opponent - Zhuge Liang
Sima Shi
"The Genius Without A Purpose"
"I shall be the last one standing once the chaos has reached its conclusion!"
Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (Japanese) Josh Grelle (English)
Born: 208
Died: 255
Japanese spelling: Shibashi
Height: 5'11" (180cm)
Son of Sima Yi and elder brother to Sima Zhao, Sima Shi is a man with magnificent intelligence who is skilled in both the military arts and various literary studies. Always pressing onwards to the future with a composed focus, he acts as the strategist and commander for his people.
- Aloof Big Brother - He's normally rather dismissive of Zhao due to his carefree attitude, and tends to boss him around.
- He thanks him for coming to see him when he's on his death bed.
- Badass - He suffers a sword blow to the face and just brushes it off as nothing.
- Bishonen
- Berserk Button - Never, EVER steal his meat buns. Also counts as Disproportionate Retribution.
- Upped to Eleven in the XL Stage Xtreme Family Feud, where Sima Yi is brought into this, and Shi even uses Pyrocannons against Zhao.
- Cool Mask
- Evil Laugh - Like Father, Like Son, but he's less of a Large Ham about it.
- Eye Scream - The reason why he's wearing that mask around his left eye is due to it being struck by a sword.
- Hey, It's That Voice! - Byakuya Kuchiki has found himself in the Three Kingdoms period of Ancient China.
- This is his third role in KOEI's historical Musou titles (previously being Chousokabe Motochika and Orochi).
- Ironic Echo - In Jin's story:
Sima Yi: (On his deathbed, throws Shi an ornament sword) Use it as you see fit.
Sima Shi: You're just leaving it all to me?
- Later on when Shi dies:
Sima Shi: (On his deathbed, throws Zhao the ornament sword) Use it as you see fit.
Sima Zhao: You're just leaving it all to me?
Sima Shi: *chuckles* I heard that somewhere before.
- Like Father, Like Son - He's much less hammy, but clearly takes after his dad.
- He gets sick and dies just like his dad, too...
- Not So Above It All - The Dynasty Warriors series has a lot of colorful characters. You wouldn't realize it by looking at him, but Shi is one of the sillier ones.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni - Seemingly the Blue Oni (cold and callous) compared with his brother.
- Royal Rapier
- The Strategist
- The Unfettered
- Trademark Favorite Food - Take a guess...
- What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous? - Really, Shi? You're going to kill your brother over meat buns?
Sima Zhao
"The Extravagant Second Son"
"I suppose I have to go out there and do something once in a while..."
Voiced by: Daisuke Kishio (Japanese), Kaiji Tang (English)
Born: 211
Died: 265
Japanese spelling: Shibashou
Height: 6'3" (190cm)
Son of Sima Yi and younger brother to Sima Shi, Sima Zhao acts as the light-hearted contrast to his stern older brother. He may act as though he is goofing off, but he supports his brother's desires for unification in their name.
- Battle Couple - With Wang Yuanji
- Berserk Button - In game, if you beat Wang Yuanji before him, he'll go after you.
- Not knowing what you want or misjudging yourself really ticks him off. Zhuge Dan learns that the hard way.
- Beware the Nice Ones
- Bishonen
- Brilliant but Lazy / Idiot Hero - Jin's story mode in DW7 paints him as both, simultaneously at that.
- DW8 builds on this, with the historical route showing him shedding the "idiot" part as he's forced to be responsible, and the hypothetical route does so in a more subtle way as he realizes Shi is pushing himself way too hard and tries to keep him safe.
- Catch Phrase - Zhao says "Mendokuse", which means "What a pain!" in English when he's tasked.
- Characterization Marches On - Prior to becoming a playable character, Sima Zhao was depicted as "Sima Yi Lite", complete with stealing his father's favorite insult.
- Henpecked Boyfriend - Some Japanese fanart even shows Wang Yuanji leading him around on a leash.
- Heroic Build - Gets to show off that sexy chest.
- Hey, It's That Voice! - Uh...Taigong Wang? Sorry, but this isn't your timeline...
- Also his English VA (Kaiji Tang) may be unknown, but those who played Fist Of The North Star: Ken's Rage may recognize him as Kenshiro himself. Whoa, talk about a difference in personality he played.
- Talking to Himself: Come Musou Orochi 2, Sima Zhao and Taigong Wang have to hold conversations with each other.
- Historical Hero Upgrade - More noble in this game than he was in real life.
- Lampshaded after he kills Cao Mao as he says that history would record him as a killer.
- Slightly subverted at the end of his route, which is also a nod to how Shu's last emperor was allowed to have a peaceful retirement after his surrender.
- Lampshaded after he kills Cao Mao as he says that history would record him as a killer.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl - Positively towers over Yuanji.
- Idiot Hair - Minor case, not very noticeable outside cutscenes in DW7.
- The Messiah - Shows shades of this.
- He even borders on being a Martial Pacifist near the end!
- Red Oni, Blue Oni - The Red Oni (happy go lucky) compared with his brother.
- Rulers Prefer Swords
- The Scrappy - In-Universe. It is highly implied that the majority (If not all) of Wei's officers hold him in low regard do to his laziness (As the battle of Dong Xing shows). It doesn't help that Sima Shi gained the favor of many influential officers after he demoted Zhao for his failure at Dong Xing (Despite him and Zhuge Dan being both at fault). However, he does manages to rescue himself from the Scrappy Heap after he steps up (following Shi's death).
- Stoic Woobie - Loses his father and his brother in quick succession and is clearly torn up about it, but doesn't let this stop his advance.
Wang Yuanji
"The Beauty with the Piercing Eyes"
"I must go out and live up to the responsibilities I have been entrusted with."
Voiced by: Kanae Ito (Japanese), Tara Platt (English)
Born: 217
Died: 268
Japanese spelling: Ougenki
Height: 5'3" (160cm)
Wang Yuanji is a caring and gentle woman to the weak and innocent. With her husband Sima Zhao, and any authority figure however, she spares them no sympathy and is rather curt.
- Action Girl
- Battle Couple - With Sima Zhao
- Cleavage Window - In her default DW7 outfit.
- Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Sima Yi explicitly got her to watch after Sima Zhao because she was good at this.
- Defrosting Ice Queen - Slowly becomes more tolerant and respectful of Sima Zhao, and by the end they seem quite happy together.
- Elegant Gothic Lolita - Her outfit evokes this, although semi-subverted since she isn't a loli.
- Pimped-Out Dress in her fantasy dlc costume and then...A Joshikousei esq ensemble.
- Ensemble Darkhorse - Very popular with both the Japanese and Western fanbases. She has the second most fanart of the new characters introduced in DW7. Trailing only Sima Zhao. She even won 1st place in the popularity poll; note that she's the only (new) female characters who made it to the top 10, beating veterans such as Sun Shang Xiang or Zhen Ji.
- Eyes of Gold - The color of her "piercing" eyes. Goes well with her having...
- Hey, It's That Voice! - What's Hinamori Amu, Fumino Serizawa and Nana Asta Deviluke doing in Ancient China?
- In the English version, Hrist, Mitsuru Kirijo, and Ranmaru/Oichi
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl - Maybe justified, since she seems to be a bit younger than him, but she's still very petite next to her strapping husband.
- Like a Daughter to Me: Both Sima Yi and Zhang Chunhua are quite proud of their daughter-in-law, with Chunhua even going so far as to claim she wished she had a daughter like her instead of her sons.
- Lady of War
- Mukokuseki: She provides the series' most blatant example, sporting entirely incongruent amber eyes and ash blonde hair.
- Knife Fan Of Doom - She wields throwing daggers, folded into a unique fan.
- The Smurfette Principle - She's the only female in a kingdom with one big Cast Full of Pretty Boys. Poor her.
- Or was, until Zhang Chunhua, Sima Yi's wife, was added in DW8.
- Tsundere - Type B. She is usually rather curt towards Zhao, but gets embarrassed when he teases or compliments her. On other people, however, she's pretty nice. The developer did say she is based on the Tsundere archetype. And... her quote on being chosen on the most popular character ever says it all.
"I'm first place? I thought it was some kind of joke, not that there would be any good reason to... It's not like I'm happy or anything... Don't misunderstand me..."
- Yamato Nadeshiko - Most of the time... she IS a Tsundere after all.
- Zettai Ryouiki - Nearly Grade S, if only she missed the Girlish Pigtails.
