It was home to the prominent Montagu family in the 18th century, whose residence was East Denton Hall. To the east of the Hall a waggonway led from the Caroline Pit to the coal staithes by the river Tyne in Scotswood.[1]
East Denton Hall, dating from 1622,[2] is the official residence of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle. It is formally known as ‘Bishop’s House, East Denton Hall.’
