Hyleberry salve
- "Hyleberry salve would be better, of course - but I dare say a little bark-sugar won't do any harm."
- —Welma Thornwood in The Curse of the Gloamglozer[1]
Hyleberry salve (or Hylesalve[2]) was a pale green[3] ointment made from hyleberries with a smell variously described as peppery,[4][5] fruity,[5] or sweet and juicy.[3] It was used to treat burns, bruises, and other injuries. It was sometimes also made with a combination of hyleberries and feverfew.[6]
Known uses in the First and Second Ages of Flight
In The Curse of the Gloamglozer, Welma Thornwood used hyleberry jam to soothe Quint's burns, after he attempted to light Maris's lamp with some flaming lufwood, stating that salve would be better.[1] Hyleberry salve played a part in Quint befriending Stope, as Stope had burnt his arm in the forge and Quint had noticed and was kind enough to give him some salve, unlike the other squires who never bothered enough to even notice.[8] After the discovery of the death of Hax Vostillix, a byre-gillie attempted to apply a hyleberry poultice to woodwasp stings sustained by Daxiel Xaxis, Captain of the Gatekeepers, and was rudely dismissed.[9] Maris uses hyleberry salve it to treat a bruise on Duggin's head,[5] and Thaw Daggerslash's shoulder wound[10] in Clash of the Sky Galleons. It is also used by Filbus Queep to treat Maugin's extensive burns after the Galerider's crash in the Deepwoods.[7]
Ma-Tatum used hyleberry salve to soothe Twig's bruises whenever he was bullied by the other woodtroll children for being different.[11] In Midnight Over Sanctaphrax, Jervis dressed Cowlquape Pentephraxis' hands with hyleberry salve and gauze padding each night for the duration of their voyage on the Skyraider, since he had rubbed most of the skin off his palms clinging to rigging underneath the sky ship after a hasty boarding.[4]
Heeb Grope carried a small pot of hyleberry salve with him when he was forced into slave labour in the Foundry Glades with his brothers Rumpel, Reel, and Rudder. The most part of the pot was used in treating the cuts and weals on Rumpel's back inflicted by the slave driver's whips.[3]
Known uses in the Third Age of Flight
During the voyage on Zelphyius Dax's skycraft, the Varis Lodd, to the Thorn Harbour, Nate Quarter applied hyleberry and feverfew salve to the wound behind Eudoxia Prade's ear where the leadwood bullet from the Battle of the Midwood Marshes was lodged.[6] Eudoxia was also later officially prescribed it by Healer Barkscale of Riverrise.[2]
