- "You young people. Always scoffing and mocking."

Ma-Tatum was a slaughterer who lived in the First Age of Flight. She was the mother of Gristle and Sinew Tatum.
Biography
Early life
Ma-Tatum was born at some point before 0 ᴇ.ʏ. and grew up in a slaughterer village. She married the son of Gram-Tatum, and had two children; Gristle and Sinew.
During Beyond the Deepwoods
In 33 ᴇ.ʏ., Twig rescued Gristle from a hoverworm, making Ma extremely grateful to him. She gifted him a hammelhornskin waistcoat and a leather charm to protect him for unseen dangers. After he scoffed at the charm, she scolded him, and warned him about the Gloamglozer.[1]
She prepared extra bedding in the family's hammock, and sent him to sleep there for the day. In the morning, Twig was awoken by the Gloamglozer in the form of a slaughterer, who told him to leave. It lied and told him that Ma-Tatum had called him a "gawky, ugly little fellow".[1] Her family were surprised when they awoke that evening to find that Twig had left.[2]
After Beyond the Deepwoods
In 46 ᴇ.ʏ., she became a grandmother, with the birth of Sinew's daughter Keris. She had four more grandchildren, Silver, Saddle, Brisket and Scrag, after the marriage of Gristle.
Naming
Ma-Tatum was not her real name, instead being an informal name used by her children. This practice was commonly used by slaughterers. It was simply comprised of Ma- and the mother's surname, in this case, Tatum. This was also used for grandmothers, with Ma- being replaced by Gram-.
