- Action Girl
- Anti-Hero: Type V, though she mellows into a Type IV by Season 2.

- Same for Ayame.
- Berserk Button: Don't even think of taking "Mother" away from her and don't call her flat chested.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing
- Blood Knight: At the beginning, she seems to love violent battles...but then she mellows on as the series goes on.
- Break the Haughty: Episode 20 seems to love doing this to her. Results in a temporary Face Heel Turn.
- She actually did this to Hana, and while it did basically make Hana cave in to her depraved side, it did have fortunate side effect of making her a relatively better person in other areas.
- Cute and Psycho
- The Cutie
- Deliberately Cute Child
- Elegant Gothic Lolita

- Historical Domain Character

He is the Qwaser of Neodymium, often carrying a large bracelet strapped to his wrist containing said element, he can manipulate nearly anything metallic by channeling its magnetic properties.
Tasuku is not exactly a member of Athos, as he is more under the employ of Buddhist monks than the Eastern Orthodox church. However, his interests align somewhat with Athos in wanting to stop the Adepts from getting the power of the Theotokos of Tsaritsyn.

Aoi/Yuu Kuchiba, a.k.a. "Double Face"
Another member of the Adepts who happens to be the Qwaser of Oxygen. Yuu became a homicidal maniac after the training his church put him through as a kid, and his sister Aoi tried to support him until she was forcibly turned into a "Maria" for his use. Long story short, Aoi's latent powers awoke and she killed her captors, but one of those present was her brother Yuu, and the shock of the event somehow caused Aoi's mind to recreate Yuu as a split personality in her own body.
Despite supposedly being Killed Off for Real (twice), Kuchiba appears to have been resurrected a third time (in the manga, at least) to carry out Tanner's plan.
Eva Silver, a.k.a. "The Queen of Living Silver"
The Qwaser of Mercury who happens to be a brutal sadist and another one of the Adepts. In reality, she is actually Eva Anna Paula Braun, the ex-wife of Adolf Hitler who managed to stay alive this long by creating young clones of herself that she could kill and absorb whenever she needed to regenerate her own body.
- Cloning Gambit
- Historical Domain Character
- Psycho Lesbian
- Sadist Teacher (carried to its extreme)

Joshua Phrygianos
A member of the Adepts who is stuck with the unfortunate mastery of the element Roentgenium, an element with a half-life of about four seconds that does not exist in nature on Earth. As a result, he tries to prove to his fellow Adepts that he isn't useless, but most of the time even the protagonists just feel sorry for him.
- Blessed with Suck Not anymore apparently he became the new Gold Qwaser
- Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain
- Nice Guy: He and his sister are relatively nice members of the Adepts.
- Plucky Comic Relief

Prefers sniping his targets from long distances, shaping lead into crude bullets without metallic jackets.
- Cold Sniper
- Monster of the Week (considering his screen time, Bit Part Badguys might fit better)
- Sociopathic Soldier
Friedrich Tanner
An enigmatic blonde-haired gentleman who appears to be manipulating both the Adepts and Athos. Though not exactly a Qwaser, he does appear to have some sort of magic powers with tarot cards he carries that allows him to do everything from Mind Control to summoning members of the Adepts to do his bidding. He seeks the Theotokos so that he can destabilize Europe and resurrect the Holy Roman Empire with Germany at its head.
The Qwaser of Gold
The leader of the Adepts whose true face has never been seen. His only real appearance in the story has been through possessing Tomo using a "golden nail" implanted somewhere in her chest that constantly drains her Soma and strengthens the Qwaser himself. He was the one who killed Sasha's older sister Olja, and apparently used Sasha's anger at him to launch an entire Evil Plan spanning years just so he could later use a large-breasted Japanese schoolgirl to gain the Blade of Maria through a special Faberge Egg and somehow use its power to change the world in his image.
There are hints in the anime and the manga that this Qwaser is actually a Catholic cardinal named Gregori.

Jita often attacks using ultra-thin diamond strings that can cut through practically anything.
- Dark Action Girl
- Hidden Buxom: Without a bra.
- Idiot Hair
- Single-Target Sexuality: She seems to have fallen for Tomo after she stepped in and saved her from Georg.

Georg Tanner
The Qwaser of Cobalt and brother of Friedrich. He is a much more narcissistic and arrogant man than his brother, but he shares his goal in using the power of the Theotokos to resurrect the Holy Roman Empire. He constantly spends time cleaning the cobalt ornament attached to his hand, but said ornament allows him to focus gamma radiation into laser beams that can be used against his opponents.
Milk (a.k.a. "Whisper Bomb")
Not much is known about Milk other than the fact that she is a little pink-haired girl who never speaks and is always shown wearing a gas mask. In the manga, cartoonish little bombs can be seen floating around her. She is the Qwaser of Hydrogen.

A Chinese man who is the Qwaser of Silicon. The manga portrays him as a scientist under the supposedly defunct Parcelsus, and is working on an experiment that involves trapping girls inside a Lotus Eater Machine.
- Freudian Excuse: His family was killed by treasure hungry thieves.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars
Marias
Marias
Mafuyu Oribe (Voiced by Ayumi Fujimura)
The female lead of the story who often walks around with a kendo shin'ai, she is Sasha's current partner and self-proclaimed protector of Tomo. Many Qwasers seek her out early in the story, thinking she knows where the Theotokos of Tsaritsyn is hidden. - Innocent Fanservice Girl: AND HOW
- Les Yay: With Mafuyu, Teresa, and Jita. Taken even farther in the manga when Jita had to sleep with her to quell the damaging effects of Tomo's half of the Sword of Maria. Episode 7 of Season 2 contained a short yet rather intense breast sucking sequence between her and Miyuri, culminating in an orgasm.
- Lethal Chef: Don't let her cook alone.
- The Messiah: A deconstruction. While she is the nicest character in the series, that did not stop her from getting picked on by the other students along with Mafuyu. However, when she's captured, she plays this role straight.
- Ms. Fanservice
- Naked Apron in Joshua's Imagine Spot.
- Parental Abandonment
- The Pollyanna
- Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: A kind variant.

- Tomboy and Girly Girl: To Mafuyu's tomboy.
- Too Dumb to Live: Sometimes...her actions fall into this category. We're talking about the time she tried to fight a fat fire with water. Thankfully Joshua was around her house searching for a victim.

A nun who tends to the church at St. Mikhailov Academy, also Sasha's original Soma donor.

A bully who continuously torments Mafuyu and Tomo along with Miyuri, but after Katja's appearance she became absolutely devoted to her instead.
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite Hana complaining sometimes about Katja being too cruel to her, she was willing to risk her life and throw herself into the fire that Katja couldn't get out of because of Oxygen's attack to save her.
- Corruption by a Minor: In short, Hana is an implied lesbian pedophile (the only person we see her exercising these urges with mostly revolves around Katja, so what extent this true is uncertain). Regardless, Katja manages to make her succumb to her suppressed predations and she becomes her Maria, though this ironically becomes a good thing, as Hana's former Jerkass exterior fades to reveal a surprisingly large heart of gold, ironically making this trope a good thing.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Faux Action Girl: Though in her defense, she's not good at it and knows it.
- Happiness in Slavery/Too Kinky to Torture

- Girlish Pigtails
- Hair Decorations: She has two ribbons in her hair.
- Les Yay -- With Lizzy (in the first season anime). Gains a few levels in this with a few of the other girls by the second anime.
- Muggle: Oddly played with the anime. She still seems amazingly ignorant as to the full extent of what's going on despite multiple viewings of things that should have shattered the masquerade, but at the same time, especially after her mellowing she's seems to have some vague idea of the weirdness around her.
- Noblewoman's Laugh - ironically done when she's posing as a masked vigilante, but played straight a few times before and after showing her self-sacrificing True Colors.
- Rich Bitch: Though she turns somewhat Spoiled Sweet over time.
- Rose-Haired Girl
Noda Yuri, a.k.a. "Father Yuri" (Voiced by Susumu Chiba)
The priest at the church in St. Mikhailov Academy. He wears an eyepatch with a cross on it over his right eye. He is rumored to have been a soldier at one point, but now he mostly serves as the Mission Control for Athos in the area, leaving the fighting to Sasha or someone else.

- Eyepatch of Power
- Informed Ability: He's one of the better fighters of Athos...but he never fights.
- Mission Control
- Mr. Exposition
- Non-Action Guy
- Nun-Too-Holy: He's very sarcastic for a priest and he has his moments of perverted thoughts. This is more evident in the OVA, though it must be noted that despite numerous opportunities to do something perverted, he's one of the few male cast members to date to have the highest ratio of keeping his hands to himself.
- Sexy Priest
- Tall, Dark and Handsome
Urada Oikawa (voiced by Sayaka Ohara)
The school nurse at St. Mikhailov Academy. She doesn't appear often, but seems at least somewhat informed about the Qwasers having helped Katja and Sasha get better after they suffered grievous wounds.

- Christmas Cake
- Defector From Decadence
- Gainaxing

- A-Cup Angst -- In the Hot Springs Episode she was the only one who boobs didn't bounce much to her dismay
