Metrobus accidents and incidents (Washington, D.C.)

These are a list of major accidents and incidents that involve a Metrobus that has happened since 2008.

Incidents

  • On August 21, 2008, a Flxible Metro B (9355) operating on the 29K or 29N crashed into the ground floor of an apartment building along Duke Street. The driver parked the bus and unloaded the passengers due to mechanical difficulties. The driver exited the bus and was attempting to repair the problem of the bus when the bus began to roll eastbound on Duke Street, then ran on the westbound lanes before crashing into the ground floor apartment. There were no injuries.reported.[1]
  • On September 26, 2008, an empty Orion VI (2043) crashed into a taxicab along the intersection of 19th Street and Virginia Avenue NW killing one and injuring three. The driver of the Metrobus was later arrested on April 21, 2011.[2][3]
  • On March 27, 2009, a MARC commuter train struck an F4 bus while it was crossing along the Queensbury Road railroad crossing. The F4 bus (D40LFR 6040) then hit another F4 bus that was turning (Flxible Metro 9731) causing damage to both buses.[4][5]
  • On July 8, 2010, an empty Orion VI (2086) collided with a car and crashed into a front yard slope in Silver Spring. One person was injured.[6]
  • On July 10, 2010, a Maryland teenager posed as a Metrobus worker stole a bus (Flxible Metro B 9318) from Bladensburg division and ran the B2 route picking up passengers before crashing the bus. After the riders got off the bus, the teen drove off before being stopped by police, fleeing the scene, and later getting arrested.[7]
  • On August 21, 2010, a C40LF (2336) caught fire in Anne Arundel County. No one was injured but the bus was destroyed.[8]
  • On September 30, 2010, a Orion VI (2082) on the C4 rear ended a DE40LF (6027) on the C2 bus along University Boulevard. 26 people were injured in the collision.[9][10][11]
  • On October 4, 2010, a pick-up truck ran into the side of a 23A bus (Orion VII 2580) along South Glebe Road near the interchange with I-395. Two people from the truck were sent to a hospital with no injuries reported on the bus.[12]
  • On December 28, 2011, a pick-up truck crossed the path of an D40LFR (6206) on the J9 bus which made the bus swerve and struck a tree along Rockville Pike at Alta Vista Road. The driver of the truck was killed in the accident while the driver of the Metrobus was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Several injuries were also reported in the Metrobus.[13][14]
  • On February 1, 2012, a truck and a DE40LF (6020) collided along Colesville Road and Franklin Avenue injuring two passengers.[15][16][17]
  • On April 12, 2012, an Orion VI bus caught fire along I-66 in Fairfax. No passengers were on board and no one was injured.[18]
  • On April 17, 2012, an Orion VI (2011) bus caught fire along US Route 50 in Maryland. No passengers were on board and no one was injured. WMATA would later pulled all the buses out of service and quietly retire them.[18][19]
  • On April 22, 2013, a car crashed into a 96 Metrobus which led the bus to crash into a tree along Woodley Avenue. Six people were injured,[20][21]
  • On May 22, 2013, a man was struck by a Metrobus along Georgia Avenue and Olney-Sandy Springs Road. The man would later die at a local hospital the next day.[22][23]
  • On October 18, 2013, a C40LF (2392) on the 80 struck a car after it ran a red light along North Capitol Street. Fourteen people were transported to a local hospital.[24]
  • On October 28, 2013, a C40LF (2406) was destroyed by a fire while parked at Bladensburg division. No injuries were reported.[25][26]
  • On November 1, 2013, an Orion V bus crashed into an SUV at North Washington and Pendleton Streets.[27]
  • On December 30, 2013, around 3:30 PM, a K6 driver was killed when her bus (XDE40 7078) began rolling without anybody on board and pinned the driver to a wall at White Oak Shopping Center. Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver attempted to engage the brake by reaching through the driver's window before becoming pinned to the bus. The driver suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead several hours later.[28][29]
  • On September 3, 2014, a DE40LFA (6367) caught fire while being towed along I-95. No one was injured and the bus was destroyed.[30]
  • On June 1, 2015, a tree fell onto an Orion VII CNG (2723) at McPherson Square. There were no injuries reported.[31]
  • On July 30, 2015, a C40LF (2444) slammed into a light pole in NoMa damaging the bus. No one was injured and the bus was not carrying any passengers.[32]
  • On November 12, 2015, an X2 bus and a DC Streetcar collided along H and 7th Streets NE. No injuries were reported.[33]
  • On November 27, 2015, at around 1:55 PM, a man was hit by a P18 bus at the intersection of Southern Avenue SE, and Indian Head Highway suffering serious injuries.[34]
  • On January 4, 2016, car cut in front of a Metrobus on the 32 near Alabama Avenue causing the bus to slam on its breaks injuring six passengers.[35]
  • On May 3, 2016, 30-year-old Keith James Loving hijacked a D40LFR (6102) bus on the U6 along Minnesota and Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenues with needle nose pliers and drove the bus into a gas station parking lot killing 40-year-old Anthony Payne. Police later apprehend Loving and was later arrested and charged with murder. The U6 driver suffered minor back injuries while no passengers were injured.[36][37][38] Keith Loving was later sentenced to 21 years behind bars.[39]
  • On June 6, 2016, an XDE40 (7255) on the J2 slammed into two trees along East-West Highway near Grubb Road after hitting a pick-up truck. The driver suffered serious injuries. 12 passengers were also hurt.[40][41][42][43]
  • On July 12, 2016, a truck crashed into three vehicles which then collided into an XDE40 (7048) and a TheBus Gillig Phantom on the 23 along Hill Road and Central Avenue. Four people were injured.[44]
  • On August 9, 2016, the driver of a C40LF bus (2407) suffered a medical emergency and crashed into a road block along 12th Street and New York Ave.[45]
  • On August 10, 2016, a car collided behind a stopped Orion VII CNG (2523) along Naylor Road. The driver of the car was killed while the passenger of the car was seriously hurt. Multiple passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries.[46][47]
  • On August 15, 2016, a car crashed into an XDE60 (5461) on the S4 along 16th Street causing the bus to crash into a brick wall. None of the 13 people on board the bus nor the driver were hurt.[48][49]
  • On September 18, 2016, a NABI 42 BRT bus (8055) on the V4 collided with a van along Minnesota Avenue and Hayes Street injuring 20 people.[50][51]
  • On October 12, 2016, one person was killed and four people were hurt when a car crashed after running a red light into a NABI 42 BRT bus and caught fire. One of the passengers was killed. The bus also suffered minor damage.[52][53]
  • On October 27, 2016, a school bus collided into an XN40 Metrobus (2881) on the G8 along Randolph Street and Eastern Avenue. 43 people were injured.[54]
  • On January 30, 2017, a car rear ended a DE40LFA (6389) on the L8 along Connecticut Avenue which sparked a fire damaging both vehicles.[55]
  • On May 17, 2017, an Orion VII CNG (2594) and a charter bus collided near Pentagon City. The Metrobus driver was injured but both buses were not carrying any passengers.[56]
  • On June 2, 2017, a collision occurred between an X2 bus and the DC Streetcar along H Street injuring 10 people.[57]
  • On June 5, 2017, an DE40LFA (6460) on the 79 was involved in an accident along Georgia Avenue. Seven people were injured.[58]
  • On August 20, 2017, an DE60LFA (5451) on the X2 bus spun out of control and hit multiple cars and nearly hitting a building in Gallery Place. Seven people were injured.[59][60]
  • On September 25, 2017, a NABI 42 BRT (8066) on the 21D stalled and lost all power near Seminary Road injuring multiple people.[61]
  • On September 28, 2017, a P18 NABI 42 BRT bus stalled and lost all power to the bus causing it to crash. The accident lead to WMATA pulling its 105 NABI 42-BRT buses from revenue service for two months.[62]
  • On June 26, 2018, a tree fell onto an XN40 bus (3112) on the 28A along North Beauregard Street damaging the bus. No injuries were reported.[63]
  • On July 2, 2018, an Orion VII BRT (3055) on the W3 crashed into a car along 30th street.[64]
  • On October 5, 2018, a NABI 42 BRT on the 92 collided into a van after it turned in front of them along Alabama Ave. Nine people were hurt, one seriously.[65]
  • On January 5, 2019, a new XN40 being delivered (3235) was involved in a multi-vehicle along Interstate 70 after colliding into multiple cars that stopped on the roadway for a construction crew. Multiple people were injured.[66]
  • On January 30, 2019, a DE60LFA (5447) on the 70 caught fire in Silver Spring. No one was injured.[67]
  • On February 14, 2019, an XDE40 (7100) crashed into a light pole along Rockville Pike. No passengers were on board but the driver suffered serious injuries.[68][69]
  • On June 1, 2019, an XN40 (3224) on the 80 collided with a truck along North Capitol Street damaging both vehicles. Nine people were injured.[70]
  • On October 24, 2019, a DE40LFA (6475) flipped over and crashed along Suitland Parkway. There were no passengers on board.[71]
  • On January 22, 2020, an XN40 on the H4 slammed into half a dozen vehicles along A street in Cleveland Park.[72]
  • On February 7, 2020, a man was struck and killed by a D12 bus (XDE40 7213) along Southern Avenue. A car nearly collided with a pedestrian and hit the bus from behind which the force of the collision pushed the bus forward striking and killing the man.[73]
  • On April 14, 2020, a car crashed into the back of an XN40 bus (3209) on the K6 around 10 PM leaving the three people inside the car pinned and severely injured.[74]
  • On May 11, 2020, a DE40LF (6031) on the Y2 crashed into a church lawn after a passenger threatened the bus driver, causing the driver to be distracted and crash.[75][76][77]
