Cairns City, Queensland

Cairns City is a coastal suburb at the centre of Cairns in the local government area of Cairns Region, Queensland, Australia.[2] It can also be referred to as the Cairns Central Business District (CBD). In the 2011 census, the population of Cairns City was 2,737 people.[1]

History

The name Cairns honours William Cairns, the Governor of Queensland from 1875 1877.[2]

Cairns Weekly Penny Savings Bank opened in Cairns City on 22 April 1899.[3]

Population

According to the 2016 census of Population, there were 2,737 people in Cairns City.

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people made up 3.9% of the population.
  • 42.7% of people were born in Australia. The next most common country of birth was England at 5.8%.
  • 54.8% of people only spoke English at home.
  • The most common response for religion was No Religion at 29.5%.[1]

Amenities

The City Library, operated by the Cairns Regional Council, opened in 1979[4] and is situated at 151 Abbott Street.[5] A major refurbishment was undertaken in 1999 and a further minor refurbishment was implemented in 2011.[4] Public accessible wifi is available.[5] Current Library services and collections can be accessed from the Cairns Libraries website.[6]

The Cairns Historical Society operates the Cairns Museum and Cairns Historical Society Resource Centre at the former Cairns School of Arts building on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets in Cairns City.[7]

Cairns Bank (formerly Cairns Penny Bank) operates its only branch at 24 Grafton Street (16.9256°S 145.7773°E / -16.9256; 145.7773 (Cairns Bank)).[8]
