The following is a timeline of the history of the city of Belém, in the state of Pará, Brazil.

  • 1616 - Forte do Presépio de Belém (fort) established by Portuguese.[1][2]
  • 1625 - Casa de Haver o Peso (tax office) in operation.
  • 1719 - Igreja e Colégio de Santo Alexandre (church) built.[3]
  • 1720 - Roman Catholic diocese of Belém do Pará established.[4]
  • 1753 - Comissão de Limites (boundary commission) and military arrive.[1]
  • 1763 - Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Mercês (church) built.
  • 1769 - Casa das Onze Janelas (hospital) opens.[1]
  • 1771 - Palácio de Governo built.[3]
  • 1777 - Igreja de São João Batista (church) consecrated.[3]

  • 1822 - O Paraense newspaper begins publication.[5][6]

  • 1876 - A Província do Pará newspaper begins publication.
  • 1879 - Amazon rubber boom begins.
  • 1883 - Palácio Municipal built.
  • 1891 - José Coelho da Gama becomes mayor.
  • 1896 - Folha do Norte begins publication.[11]

  • 2002 - August: Part of 2002 South American Games held in city.
  • 2010 - Village Moon and Village Sun skyscrapers built.[17]
  • 2013 - Zenaldo Coutinho becomes mayor.
  • 2016
    • BRT Belém (bus) begins operating.
    • October: Belém municipal election, 2016 held.
    • Population: 1,446,042.[18]
