The first awarding ceremony was held on 9 January 2017 in Zurich, Switzerland.[2] The award is aimed at reviving the FIFA World Player of the Year. Since its revival, Cristiano Ronaldo has won it the most with 2 back to back awards for his years 2016 and 2017 respectively.
