Sports broadcasting contracts in the Philippines
These are the sports broadcasting contracts in the Philippines. There are four primary local producers of sport programs in the country: Solar Sports, Tap Sports, ABS-CBN (ABS-CBN Sports), GMA Network, and TV5/Cignal TV (One Sports).
Solar airs its sports programming on cable channels Solar Sports. It was the official broadcast partners the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics (the latter also aired on TV5, AksyonTV and Cignal-owned Hyper under the Sports5 brand) and the FIBA Basketball World Cup and its qualifying games until 2015, when both event's contract were transferred to Sports5.
ABS-CBN airs its sports programming on UHF ABS-CBN Sports+Action and its HD-simulcast channel ABS-CBN Sports+Action HD. It also airs select boxing matches on its flagship station, VHF Channel 2, notably Pacquiao matches before Solar regained the rights. It is also the broadcast partner of the UAAP and the NCAA, which its primary events includes men's basketball and women's volleyball among others.
Solar formerly holds the rights to the National Basketball Association until September 30, 2019, when its contract with the league expired, shutting down cable channels Basketball TV and NBA Premium TV;[1][2] the expiration of Solar's NBA contract ended ABS-CBN's free-to-air broadcast rights to air NBA games, which is also from them and also ended Fox Sports' coverage of the NBA.
NBA announced on July 27, 2020 that it has signed a multi-year partnership with Cignal TV and Smart Communications to bring NBA games and programming to fans in the Philippines through free-to-air, satellite television and over-the-top streaming. Starting July 31, to coincide with the 2019–20 NBA season restart, free-to-air channels TV5 and ONE Sports will broadcast live NBA games for the first time, including four games every week. Cignal TV, on the other hand, launched an NBA-dedicated channel via NBA TV Philippines, which broadcasts live NBA games 7 days a week.[3]
One Sports, the sports arm of TV5 and Cignal TV currently has rights to the Philippine Basketball Association, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, WWE, Impact Wrestling, National Football League and FIBA-related events, which includes the FIBA Basketball World Cup and its qualifying games.
TAP Sports, a sports-centric media company led by De Guia family and former Solar executives, acquired broadcast rights to various international sporting events such as the Premier League, ATP, WTA and others.
Foreign sports other than the NBA are aired, but on cable channels, notably Solar, the Fox Sports channels (Fox Sports, Fox Sports 2 and Fox Sports 3) and various sports channels like BeIN Sports, Eurosport and Setenta Sports, and various digital streaming platforms such as YouTube, Facebook and several third-party digital services. Sports Illustrated TV (formerly All Sports Network) also airs foreign sports programming, mostly gaining rights for the National Hockey League, National Football League, NASCAR Xfinity and the Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series.
In 2021 & 2022 Olympics its all sports programming on cable channels in Fox Sports Asia GMA Network & PTV4. It is was the official broadcaster partners the 2020 Summer Olympics & 2022 Winter Olympics (the latter also aired on PTV4 until 2022, when both event's contract were transferred to PTV Sports).
