Background
Elsa follows a mysterious voice across the Dark Sea to Ahtohallan. She explores memories of the past, discovering the secrets of what occurred in the Enchanted Forest and the source of her powers. She sings "Show Yourself" as she dives deeper toward the truth.[1]
The original version of the song was approximately six-and-a-half minutes long.[2]
"It had to be really triumphant and the process took us about six months to do because all the rest of the story was still locking. We just had to keep rewriting the last three minutes of the song so much [assisted by story artist Mark Smith]. But now I really love the moment when she [tames] Nokk, the water horse, and you feel this joyful settling in Elsa."[3]
Lopez gave a similar account: "When we saw the first round of visuals and then we saw it in the film, everyone agreed changes needed to happen. And it went back and forth for months—it’s now four minutes and 20 seconds and it has a big ending. It transformed a lot, and it was hard."[4]
International versions
At the time of its original theatrical release, the film was released in 47 versions worldwide, with the song Show Yourself counting 46 versions overall: Charlotte Hervieux and Prisca Demarez's recording of the song was used in both French versions released in Europe and Canada, although the rest of the dubbings were independent. Among the dubbings released, versions in Tamil, Telugu and Northern Sami were recorded for the sequel, even though the first movie has never been dubbed into these languages.[5][6] As with Moana with Tahitian,[7] Māori[8] and Hawaiian versions,[9] the Sami version was an exceptional dubbing made specifically for the movie, due to the inspiration it took from Sami culture.[10][11]
Norwegian-Swedish composer Christine Hals, who voiced Iduna in the Norwegian version, had previously taken part in Frozen, writing the lyrics in Old Norse for the song "Heimr Àrnadalr" and performing kulning for Beck to use it in his score.[12][13] As with Frozen, Dutch musical actress Willemijn Verkaik lent her voice to Elsa both in the Dutch and German-language versions, and Spanish singer Gisela, together with actress Isabel Valls, performed both the Catalan and European Spanish versions, while Indian singer Sunitha Sarathy voiced Iduna in both Tamil and Telugu.[5][6]
