  • Actor Allusion (during the Hare Hare Yukai dance in episode 38, she's in the same spot as Suzumiya Haruhi but doesn't wear the North High uniform for obvious reasons)
    • Also, her performance uniform includes a T-shirt that reads "Did you cum twice too?" Word of God says she doesn't know what that phrase means, just as Aya Hirano's knowledge of the phrase is debatable in Real Life.
    • Oh, and then there's the closed space she creates for her "murder sim" in episode 13.
  • All Bikers Are Hells Angels (in episodes 24 and 25; subverted as the Hell's Angels portrayed in those episodes are much nicer than their real-life counterparts)
  • Anti-Hero (Usually a Type II. Usually.)
  • Bifauxnen
  • Big No (as she watches Mitsuuru gets knifed to death by a thug)
  • Bond One-Liner (she gets one whenever she dispatches an Akumana or other enemy. e.g.: "Something he ate disagreed with him.")
  • Celebrity Voice Actor (Emma Watson in the movies)
  • Character Focus (She's the author's personal favorite and gets a whole boatload of plotlines related to her, on par with Sakura. She's also the one who features more heavily in crossover/spinoff works.)
  • Clingy Jealous Girl (to Mitsuuru, which is why Kaori tries her hardest to make sure she and Mitsuuru stay Just Friends in order to avoid her wrath—because if Shugo caught them in love she'd kill Kaori)
  • Cluster Hell And Damn Bomb (she gives all the other Fan Cures a run for their money in the swearing department)
  • Crosscast Role (she gets this all the time, most notably as Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi)
  • Disney Death
  • Dress Hits Floor (Done with her Isuten Junior High uniform in episode 41; of course, the camera is allowed to pan vertically upwards immediately afterwards, since she was wearing blue jeans underneath like she always does during the winter months.)
  • Expy (Her Cure costume should remind you of Eas. Also, a few characters comment she looks like she could be Emma Watson's long-lost twin sister, which becomes an Actor Allusion in the English dub of one of the movies. Starting with the final scene in episode 52, she cut her hair just so she could continue to look like her. While this isn't brought up at first, in the first episode of World Tour Akane comments on it, asking if she "cut [her] hair just so [she] could look like Emma Watson", and the official response from Shugo is that she "wanted to crank [her] boyishness Up to Eleven.")
  • Face Heel Revolving Door (Sometimes, she just doesn't know who to shoot. In episode 31, she pulls a gun on Sakura for no reason at all. Then, in episode 41, she shoots at Mitsuuru when he tries to pass himself off as a Magical Girl, leading him to yell, "Hey, Einstein, I'm on your side!" Episode 45 features her at her most evil recklessly homicidal when chasing Kuroimetaru. And that's not even going into all those times she shot at her own allies in episodes 49 and 50, some of which led to Star Fox 64 homages.)
  • First Kiss (with Mitsuuru, during a flashback)
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars (her X-shaped scar on her arm)
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking (She finds an abandoned cigarette in episode 45, taking a whiff and blowing it in Kuroimetaru's face, saying, "Enjoy your secondhand smoke, bitch!" Then she coughs before saying, "I knew I shouldn't have done that. I hope I don't get addicted." Guess what? She's remained smoke-free ever since.)
  • Gratuitous Spanish (sometimes it's clean, sometimes it's vulgar. It's easy to tell: the author censors translations of the vulgar Spanish in the glossary)
  • The Gunslinger (after episode 13)
  • Hell-Bent for Leather (her school uniform includes a black leather jacket; also, her performance uniform makes her resemble one of The Ramones if he wore a Japanese Academy hat)
  • Hot Chick in a Badass Suit (on numerous occasions)
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy (played straight most of the time, as any opponent that fires at her, she kills first shot; mercilessly inverted in episode 51, as she gets shot in the lung after missing her opponent each time)
  • Incurable Cough of Death (in episode 51, complete with blood coming out of her mouth)
  • The Lancer
  • Masculine Girl to Mitsuuru's Feminine Boy
  • Meganekko (she becomes a rare Bifauxnen example starting in episode 37 as part of the episode's subplot)
  • Moe Moe (she does a pretty good job at it at the start of episode 37, during her first moments as a Meganekko)
  • Moral Event Horizon (Subverted; the closest she ever comes to crossing it is in episode 45. She doesn't cross it, but since then she's usually portrayed as psychotic whenever faced by evil, though otherwise she's a pleasant person to be around.)
    • And then there's the "murder sim" in episode 13 of season 2 where she enters closed space and offs all her own bandmates as if she's a slasher villain. Her friends in the real world are still alive when she returns, so it doesn't count either.
  • Nonuniform Uniform (Word of God says Shugo's Isuten High uniform in World Tour is officially a hybrid between the uniforms of different sexes, with the sailor top of the girls' uniform and the black pants of the boys' uniform. The leather jacket worn by both sexes is also present. As she herself describes her uniform: "Look at me from the waist up, and you'd think I was a girl. Look at me from the waist down, and you'd think I was a boy." Here's one tomboy's reaction in the first episode of the season:)

Tomboy: What are you, a hermaphrodite, wearing a hybrid uniform like that with androgynous features? Or are you receiving special treatment from the school?
[Shugo grabs the tomboy by her sailor collar]
Shugo: I'll be traveling the world with my band starting next week, I'll have you know!
Tomboy: What's that got to do with anything?
Shugo: It means I don't have to put up with such crap as you just now threw at me for very long, that's what!
Sakura: Leave her alone, Shugo. She's just screwing around with you.
[Shugo lets go of the tomboy]
Shugo: Well, violence would not be very good publicity for a first-year, so I'll let you off this time with a warning.

  • Precision F-Strike (she says the F word in episodes 23 and 51; the latter one will be the ONLY F word in the series to be uncensored—and that's to maximize the impact)

  • She Cleans Up Nicely (done with a tuxedo during the royal ball episode)
  • Skirt Over Slacks (While at Isuten Junior High, she wore blue jeans under her uniform during the winter session and gym shorts—not of the bloomers variety, obviously—during the spring, summer, and fall sessions. In the very first episode of World Tour, following her encounter with a rude tomboy, she encounters a tomboy who's somewhat nicer and went to Isuten Junior High in the past. She relates her own junior high days to her with these words:)

Shugo: Most of you girls didn't wear gym shorts under your uniforms in junior high. Me, I always wore some form of pants under that uniform of mine, most often gym shorts, which weren't visible unless the winds came up or some voyeur decided to fool around with me. In winter, I always wore blue jeans under my uniform because of a clause in the school's dress code that allows it, but also because I wanted to keep my legs warm during the colder months. Nowadays, I wear a hybrid uniform. Look at me from the waist up, and you'd think I was a girl. Look at me from the waist down, and you'd think I was a boy.

  • Stripperific (alone amongst her comrades, she wears hot pants in lieu of a skirt)
  • Suddenly Always Knew That (in a later episode, it's revealed that she's a self-taught figure skater, and she does a transgender pairs routine with Mitsuuru)
  • Technically Living Zombie (Sakura infects her during the zombie scare at the funeral home. She finds herself a slave to the undead zombie created by tainted embalming fluid.)
  • Tights Under Shorts (Sometimes wears this, particularly in the second season)
  • Token Evil Teammate (although, she's usually more antiheroic than evil, though she goes psycho when someone presses one of her Berserk Buttons either by accident or by design)
  • Villainous Breakdown (Of sorts. She's not actually evil, but in episode 8, she's de-zombified just as she's about to infect a mourner at a funeral and suffers one when she realizes that she almost sunk her teeth into human flesh. When she's about to kill the funeral director for being careless, Sakura stops her by saying, "If you kill him, it's like killing Death itself. I'm warning you, you don't--" Shugo, having regained her sanity, cuts her off and says, "I know, I know. We don't even want to fuck with that MacDaddy.")
  • Villain Protagonist (She acts like one sometimes in World Tour, to the point where she's the closest thing the season has to an actual villain—never mind that there's the odd monster that forces the Cures back into action.)
    • Her most serious incident was the "murder sim" she did in closed space; however, the most severe punishment she gets is a What the Hell, Hero? Speech from Sakura (who along with her friends is actually alive and well).
  • Zettai Ryouiki (Grade B as Cure Hendrix—and this is despite the fact she doesn't wear a skirt)

  • Car Fu (she possesses a scale model of Saul Toby's 1986 Honda Integra and uses it to run down Cure Hendrix, who references the trope's alternate name immediately afterwards, and scare the living hell out of Toby)
  • Kill It with Fire (after being shot in the head by Cure Hendrix, she falls into an oven to burn to death)
  • Moral Event Horizon (possessing W. Benny Bara)
  • Quicksand Sucks (her weapon in episode 19)

Nakamura Akane (Gacy)

  • Everything's Even Worse with Sharks (in episode 41, he makes his badassery known by feeding an unnamed character to the sharks; with the mauled carcass he leaves a note in the body bag reading "He disagreed with something that ate him")
  • Hey, It's That Voice! (Japanese: Ryoma Nagare, is that you? English: Sanosuke Sagara, is that you?
  • Hoist by His Own Petard("Something he ate disagreed with him.")
  • Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy (averted; he happens to be a good shot, rivalling even Cure Hendrix)
  • Moral Event Horizon (bumping off Akane/Gacy when she protects her former foes)
    • About this guy, Sakura Cobain says in episode 41, "The guy who did this horrible deed tap-dances over the Moral Event Horizon four times each day before breakfast. He's just that Satanic. I mean, look at how the hell much damage he's done! He burned down a church, slaughtered a helpless born-again Christian who he considered to be a traitor to the Mansonian cause, and now he has fed some poor bastard to the sharks! What next?"

W. Benny Bara

"That's for my bandmates! And that's for the newbies I befriended! Now stop harassing my friends or I'll keep beating you up! Wait... where are you going! Come back here or I'll call the police!"

  • Hair-Trigger Temper (the only people he's never flipped out on, as he says in a Ramirez-era episode, are his own bandmates and the Lovely and Wild Angels; otherwise, he'd go postal over the slightest touch, as displayed in episode 26 when, having been exorcised by the Cures, he punches out Ramirez for all the terror she's brought to his band and Sakura's)
  • Man in a Kilt (he wears one on occasion, most notably while the band he inspired promotes Venezuelan Democracy at Best Buy in episode 46)
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed (W. Axl Rose, anyone?)

Takahashi Mitsuuru

"I never thought a girl would tell me to Stay in the Kitchen. It just goes to show that you're really damn powerful. However, it wouldn't hurt to let me use She Fu on the next demon you girls face."

  • Attractive Bent Gender (he's so convincing in drag, Even the Guys Want Him)
  • Batman Gambit (his successful attempt to allow his girlfriend and her bandmates to view his performance in La Fille Mal Gardee from a theatre in the city they're located in at the time relied on him showing the showdates for the band's tour to the ballet producer and on said producer's timing of the performance)
  • Crosscast Role (he gets this a lot, most notably as Suzumiya Haruhi herself. Later, upon joining the Oriyama Ballet Company, he continues to play this straight with the troupe.)
  • Disney Death (At the end of season 2, an IPO stabs him in the heart at the airport as his friends watch. This comes complete with Pietà Plagiarism by Shugo all the way out of the airport, then, following a Red Herring of a Really Dead Montage, he comes back to life when Shugo kisses him.)
  • Feminine Boy to Shugo's Masculine Girl

In a season 2 episode, he also gets to perform with the Oriyama Ballet Company for the first time after joining the troupe, dancing the part of Lise in La Fille Mal Gardee before thousands, if not millions, of spectators in theatres worldwide, including the Lovely and Wild Angels, who received special tickets to the screening in the city where they're located at the time via email. He does it again during the Christmas episode, in which he reveals that he's going to dance the part of Mascha from The Nutcracker as choreographed by Yuri Grigorovich. Again, the Lovely and Wild Angels watch a live screening of the performance.)
  • She Cleans Up Nicely (he's actually one of few male examples to do this with an actual dress, in the royal ball episode)
  • Suzumiya Haruhi (he played the part in a drama club production; his girlfriend—voiced by Aya Hirano, Haruhi's Japanese voice—played Kyon)

  • Suddenly Always Knew That (In a later episode, he and Shugo do a transgender pairs skating routine. Later, in episode 47, he shows off ballet training from when he was a kid.)
  • Wardrobe Malfunction (not a malfunction so much as an odd attribute, but in a season 2 episode, he comments that before he joined the Oriyama Ballet Company, he attended dance lessons wearing an extremely tight pink leotard that has a special adhesive on the inside that sticks to him for exactly six hours before loosening up and allowing him to remove it. Plus, the entry point is as wide as his neck, so he had to pull wide at the entry point to get in or out. As such, he was stuck wearing the leotard for the remainder of the day whenever he took ballet lessons on that day. Upon joining the company, he switches to a pink strapless leotard that's fastened to him by two thick strands of ribbon at the very top that are tied behind his back.)

  • A Wizard Did It (it's revealed in the season 2 finale that his ever-amazing skill at ballet comes from a charm placed upon him by a Land of Rock denizen following one of his early ballet classes)

"I can't seem to decide which one of you two will be my partner in my new exercise video. You both look quite good at the part. However, only one will be able to be my co-host, and I don't know which one it'll be."

Kaori Furuya

Voice Actor: Yoko Hikasa (Japanese); Jessica Boone (English)

  • Ascended Extra (she has a bigger role in World Tour, where her life with the Oriyama Ballet Company is even covered, starting with Mitsuuru joins the company)
  • Bifauxnen (not exactly, but she gives off this vibe in the Oriyama Ballet Company's productions, starting with Ouran, her first performance as a regular)
  • Crosscast Role (after Ouran, she exclusively dances in male roles)
  • Murder the Hypotenuse (Shugo threatens to do this to her if she makes a move on Mitsuuru, which is why the two are trying to stay Just Friends and not make it seem like they're in love)
  • Rookie Red Ranger (It's stated that when she was a child, she danced as Maria in The Nutcracker; that production was based on the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. However, she only officially joined the Oriyama Ballet Company recently, when it was preparing a production of Ouran with choreography by Mikhail Baryshnikov; since then she's proven herself one of the strongest dancers in the troupe, as evidenced when she danced the part of the Nutcracker Prince in another production of The Nutcracker, this time with choreography by the Bolshoi's Yuri Grigorovich.)
  • Sweater Girl (she wears a shoulder-baring sweater as part of her costume whenever she practices with the Oriyama Ballet Company)
  • Tall, Dark and Bishoujo (while not quite on the level of Yoko Hikasa's other characters, it's still an Actor Allusion on her part)
  • Unitard Of Power (in contrast with the leotards or even biketards worn by the other girls in Oriyama High's dance club, particularly Hanae, who appears with her in Pretty Cure All Stars 3D 3: Hollywood Field Trip and Pretty Cure Wonder Party 3D and mentions that fact to the others in the former)
  • Wholesome Crossdresser (on stage, at least, starting with Ouran, where she performed as the female principal; in real life, she's just an ordinary girl who, especially in recent years, prefers to wear slacks when not in school, even when practicing with the Oriyama Ballet Company; her dance club outfit at Oriyama High is even a unitard, unlike with those of the club's other girls.)
