Dragon Ball Z Abridged/Tropes N to Z
N
Narrator: Many lives were lost, many lessons were learned, and I made out with a cool one hundred thou!
King Kai: You cheating son of a--
Narrator: Can't hear you, don't care.
- Negated Moment of Awesome: Happens to Gohan while fighting Recoome. Gohan starts by giving Recoome a bit of a verbal beatdown as the music starts to swell. Then he makes a desperate charge and....... gets his neck snapped with one kick.
- Nested Mouths: Third-form Freeza whips out one of these as a reference to Alien.
- Nervous Wreck: This happens to Krillin. He cannot shut up when he's scared.
- Never Heard That One Before: Played with with Freeza, who keeps a tally of heroic speeches:
Namekian Warrior: We're here to stop this senseless slaughter of our people.
Freeza: 92
Namekian Warrior: This has gone on for too long. And now, you're going to pay.
Freeza: 355
Namekian Warrior: We are...we...what are you--
Freeza: No, go on. Continue. Don't mind me.
Namekian Warrior: And...we are the ones who will stop you.
Freeza: Ooh, wow. 419.
(After hearing about the running tally)
Namekian Warrior: Oh yeah? Well... we're going to... $%&@ your face!
Freeza: Oh my. Twelve.
- Though Goku did find one he didn't hear: "Imma deck you in the schnoz!"
- Never Say "Die": Spoofed.
Reporter: Oh my God! They blew up the cargo robot... And the cargo was people!
Krillin and Piccolo: Kage Bunshin no Jutsu! [Both make three copies of themselves]
Nappa: Vegeta! I can't... [smiles] believe it.
Vegeta: [offscreen, in disgust] Uuuuuugggh.
- New Powers as the Plot Demands: Parodied. Vegeta reveals to Dodoria that after his trip to Earth, he can now sense energy sources and doesn't need a scouter. When Dodoria asks him how he learned how to do that, Vegeta is just as clueless.
- And again in Episode 21 when Goku reads Krillin's mind. His explanation muffin button makes as much sense as the canonical explanation just something that happens while he's training at high gravity.
- No Indoor Voice: Vegeta spends about 80% of his screentime screaming at the top of his lungs. Lanipator lampshades it in one blooper where after recording one such outburst, he drops character to give his larynx a break and asks why he had to be cast as the loudest, raspiest voiced character in the whole show.
- The entire Kanassan race seem to be like this.
"I CAN SEE THE FUTUUURE!!!"
- Won't Work On Me: "The only thing Recoome sells is merchandise!" (Including a Recoome vibrator, apparently.)
- Freeza pulls this on Goku a few times.
Freeza: No, seriously, Kai-oh-what?
Goku: Kai-oh-crap.
Freeza: Thought so.
- Not Completely Useless: See Calling Your Attacks above.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Zarbon on Vegeta after his transformation.
- Noodle Incident: How Super Kami Guru resolved the drought crisis.
- In addition, when Vegeta is figuring where Ginyu hid the Namekian Dragonballs:
Vegeta: If it's anything like that jockstrap incident, Ginyu probably buried them somewhere around here.
- Freeza mentions it in episode twenty-seven.
Freeza: (thinking) This has been one giant mess. It's just like that jockstrap incident, only now I don't have Ginyu to dig the holes.
- No Party Like a Donner Party: How Dende seems to hint at how the Eldest Namek helped his entire race through a great drought that struck Namek...
- Non Sequitur Thud: Occasionally happens to characters who've had thier asses handed to them.
Krillin: (After been kicked by Recoome, in a high pitch) Hello Gohan, have you done your homework? Cause if you don't Chi-chi will kick my ass!
- Goku delivers one after being repeatedly dunked underwater while fighting Freeza.
Goku: Grandpa, I don't want any more baths today. I'm clean now.
- Not That There's Anything Wrong with That: Said word-for-word by Zarbon after insinuating that Vegeta is gay.
- Not Wearing Pants: "You'll have to speak up, I'm not wearing any pants". Apparently Master Roshi's hearing is directly tied to his level of dress.
- This may be a Shout-Out to an old episode of The Simpsons, in which Homer gets out of the shower, answers the phone, and tells the person on the other end "You'll have to speak up; I'm wearing a towel."
O
- Offscreen Moment of Awesome: The Ginyu Force being pwned out of King Kai's planet... by KING KAI HIMSELF. Justified that the original scene was a filler of Tien, Yamcha and Chaotzu fighting them to show how much progress they made in King Kai's training. Still bloody awesome though.
- Oh Crap:
Vegeta: (in the middle of a Beam-O-War) This is the end, Kakarot. You don't stand a chance! I put all of my power into this attack. Now perish with the rest of your pathetic world!
Goku: Kaio-ken...
Vegeta: Nooo...
Goku: TIMES...
Vegeta: No, no, no...
Goku: FOUR!
Vegeta: No, no, no, nononono--[blasted backwards into the sky] FUUUUUUU [50 seconds later] UUUUCK!
- And a bit later...
Vegeta: Haha! There's nothing left now! Your last hope, and you missed! You're all dead, and there isn't a damn thing you can d--what smells like deer?
- And further still:
Vegeta: [after cutting off Oozaru Gohan's tail] Ha ha, I did it! I'm the best! Around! Nothing's ever gonna keep me down... [notices Gohan is falling right towards him] No-NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOO!
- And then in episode 18, when Guru senses five "incredibly flamboyant" high power levels heading straight for the surface of planet Namek, Vegeta immediately realizes who they are (the Ginyu Force) and starts panicking that they're all going to die.
- Even Goku has one at the end of episode 22 when he realizes that he's had his body switched with the much weaker Captain Ginyu who just punched a hole in his own chest.
- Jeice gets one in episode 23 while fighting Vegeta.
Jeice: What the hell happened to you? You were NOT this strong when you fought Recoome!
Vegeta: [hands him the Saiyan Handbook] Looks like you have some required reading to do.
Jeice: Alright, let's see here. Okay, full moon, lose your tail, stronger every time you... oh. Well I'm right f{{[[[Sound Effect Bleep]] bleep}}]ked, aren't I?
Vegeta: Right in the downunder.
- Vegeta and Krillin at the end of Episode 24.
Vegeta: If it didn't grant me my wish, then I'm not immortal, and Freeza's going to... going to...
[Vegeta stares, and Krillin follows his gaze to where Freeza is standing.]
Freeza: Oh don't mind me. By all means, give me some ideas.
- When Freeza transforms in Episode 25.
Gohan: Krillin, do you feel that?!
Krillin: I taste that!
Freeza: [After Transforming] All done, and judging by the expression on your face, so are you.
- Freeza causes more of these in Episode 26, when he transforms again and kills the White Mage, and Episode 27 when he pummels Vegeta. And then Goku shows up and deflects all of his attacks...
- Goku uses the Kaio-Ken attack on Freeza, prompting "Kaio-what" before getting smacked in the face. Then Freeza immediately recovers and says "seriously, Kaio-what?" to Goku's shocked dismay.
Goku: Kai-Oh Crap.
Freeza: I thought so.
- The favor is returned with Goku's mega Spirit Bomb.
Freeza: Hehehehe... eh? Oh, somehow I completely forgot about that.
[Spirit Bomb absorbs Death Ball]
Spirit Bomb: OMNOMNOM.
Freeza: Oh, my God!
- Omnidisciplinary Scientist: Lampshade hung in Episode 13:
Roshi: Why Bulma's?
Goku: Well I need a ship and Bulma's dad is a scientist.
Roshi: I'm not even going to begin to go into what's wrong with that. I just wish you good luck.
- Dr. Briefs seems to actually -be- one going by the events of Lord Slug; isolating the Gay gene and finding a meteor with his combination microscope/telescope. In addition to having built a spaceship that could go to Namek, complete with artificial gravity chamber and a suitably long-range transmitter/receiver.
- One-Liner, Name. One-Liner.: Inverted during The Stinger of episode 21:
Goku: (during a conversation about the differences between tetanus and rabies) Silly Gohan, animals don't eat people; people eat animals! Silly Gohan.
- One of Us: Kaiser Neko is apparently a Troper.
- One-Scene Wonder: Arguably GanXingBa as King Yemma. And his (mahogany) desk.
- And the nameless farmer from Episode One (the one with the marijua--I mean, "carrot" patch).
- One Up Sampo: In episode 25, when Freeza impales Krillin, he starts to do it repeatedly. Eventually, the stabs start turning into 1 UPs.
- Only Sane Man: Vegeta, unfortunately for him. Gohan, Piccolo, Shenron the Dragon, and Nail are also pretty stable, though with some issues. Everyone else is generally off the deep end.
- The Other Darrin: Vegeta3986 replaces Lanipator as Raditz in the first episode.
- And starting in the Bardock special, LittleKuriboh replaces Lani as Freeza (subtly implied when he starts off with Lanipator and coughs mid-line, switching voices when he starts again).
- This happened with Chi Chi's casting behind the scenes. The original plan was for Whiteash to handle the character, but she backed out due to life issues before Chi Chi's first appearance. Then Krisrix voiced her for the first season. Now she's been replaced by Hnilmik, a veteran of many popular flash animations, machinima, and adaptation projects as well as voicing Ms. Fortune in Skullgirls. Pick your favorite.
- Because Vegeta3986 left the series, everyone he played in the series thus far has been replaced as of episode 24. Kami is now voiced by Weekly Tube Show, and Lanipator has gone back to voicing Raditz (whenever he appears, anyway). This is also going to happen to Yamcha at some point too (if they ever give him another line before cutting him off).
- As of Episode 28, Yamcha is voiced by Faulerro.
- Our Lawyers Advised This Trope: "We here at Team Four Star do not condone child violence... We do, however, find it hilarious."
- Overly Long Gag: Jeice getting repeatedly punched in the nose.
Goku: So... Are you going to dodge any of these?
Jeice: Oh, that's what the captai-[WHACK]!
- Overly Long Scream: Vegeta's scream can be heard by Krillin and Gohan miles away, Goku in outer space, King Yemma in the afterlife, and Trunks twenty years in the future. An alternate future!
- To be fair, at that time this future wasn't alternate yet, it was still the 'normal' future.
P
- Pardon My Klingon: Literally Klingon. Dende calls Freeza a p'taq in episode 22.
- Parrot Expowhat: Any time Goku uses the Kaio-ken, someone (usually Goku's opponent) inevitably responds with some variation of "Kaio-what?"
- The Password Is Always Swordfish: To use Kami's spaceship, activating anything merely requires you to say "Popo." How that works is not strictly defined but apparently the very name of Mr. Popo is enough for even the ship itself to bend to his whims (or anyone who uses it).
- Phrase Catcher: Poor Gohan. So far he's only hearing it from Piccolo, with Nappa joining in once. "NEEEERD!" And in Episode 18, when he says "I need an adult", Vegeta, Krillin, and Guru respond I am an adult!
- "Krillin!" "What?" "Too Soon!"
- "Dammit, Goku/Kakkarot!"
- Poor Communication Kills: A bunch of child-soldier refugees, whose planet was conquered and destroyed by Freeza don't listen to Krillin as he tries to explain he and Gohan aren't sent by Freeza. When even Krillin proves too strong for them to kill, they still won't listen and commit mass suicide.
- Power Levels: A Zig-Zagging Trope with the infamous "Over nine THOUSAAAAND!" line. First Vegeta read it as 1006, then told Nappa, who was being pummeled senselessly by Goku, to wait a moment.
Vegeta: I had the scouter upside down. [calmly] It's over 9000. [breaks scouter] Rah.
Nappa: [lying, broken, on the ground] Why do you sound so bored?
Vegeta: Because he's still not a threat.
Nappa: But--
Vegeta: To me.
- Gotta love how Nappa quotes his own line:
Nappa: Hey Vegeta, "What does the scouter say about his power level?"
- And as shown in the Running Gag below, because Raditz is so weak (and apparently clocks in at an even 1000), he's become the basic unit of measure. According to Vegeta in an announcement video, the new Dragon Ball Abridged page has OVER 9 RADITZ of Team Four Star power.
- Vegeta calls out the Strong as They Need to Be aspect of power levels in Episode 26 while Piccolo is fighting Freeza.
Vegeta: "Wait a damn minute, something's wrong here. Back on your planet the Namek could barely stand up to Nappa, yet here he is now taking on Freeza. In his second form."
Gohan: "What do you think happened?"
Vegeta: "Well either Freeza hit me so hard I'm in a delusional coma, or..."
Gohan: "Or..?"
Vegeta: "Power levels are BULL****!"
- Powered by a Forsaken Child: Mr. Popo's flying carpet gets 10,000 miles per soul- I mean gallon. 10,000 miles per gallon...
- Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner: Zarbon: "I'MMA RAPEYA, BITCH!"
- Vegeta has another in Episode 23
Ginyu: At least I'm not stuck in some useless body.
Vegeta, appearing behind him: Give me a minute.
- Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Only Vegeta can use "No homo" as one of these and still sound undeniably badass.
- He also plans one to use on Krillin after the dragon has been summoned.
Vegeta (thinking): Ok, as soon as they summon the dragon, I'm going to rush up and snap the bald one's neck. I'm totally going to yell "Team Three Star" when I do it too!
- Precision F-Strike: What's the best thing to say when you're about to save the world with a Spirit Bomb?
Krillin: BOOYAH, MOTHER****ER!
- Freeza has the perfect response to the news of Dodoria's death.
Freeza: ...the f**k?!
- Anytime Gohan swears, you know shit's about to go down.
Gohan: (to Freeza) You... Condescending... Sadistic... Callous... MOTHERF#@&ER!
- Vegeta's response to Goku saying he trained at 100G? FUUU******UUUUCCKK!
- Freeza's Scouter before it gives up on him? F**K THIS, I'M OUT!"
- Prison Rape: Few instances of it during Episode 5 when Vegeta and Nappa were in an Arlian prison.
- Nappa: Hey Vegeta. Don't drop the soap.
- Green Bug: Welcome to Oz, bitch! You (Vegeta) with the spiky hair, you're gonna be my bitch! I'm gonna sell you for a cigarette but not before I violate you because you're my bi-"
- Nappa does this twice.
- "Hi I'm Nappa and this is Vegeta. He was a prison bitch!"
- Psychopathic Manchild: Nappa.
- Psycho Strings: This appears to have become Vegeta's Leitmotif, which plays whenever he is about to do something very painful to someone else.
- Pyromaniac: Oolong in the Christmas Special.
R
- Rapid-Fire Comedy: Dragon Ball Z Kai Abridged.
- Rapid-Fire "No": Vegeta lets one go when he's about to get blasted away by Goku's Kamehameha.
- Reactive Continuous Scream: In the twenty-seven episode Vegeta, Krillin and Gohan were screaming during their fight with Freeza.
Vegeta: "Healer's down!"
Krillin: "Need a rez!"
Gohan: "Out of mana!"
Vegeta starts screaming and they all follow suit.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Krillin lets loose pent-up aggression on Bulma:
Krillin: Well, I dunno, maybe you could have bitched at him, how 'bout that! That's all you appear to be good for these days! Huh?! Used your bitch-fu on him! Bulma: The Mistress of Bitching; that's what they should call you! (a few scenes later):...seriously! Five ancient Sages of Bitchdom all gathered together on the peaks of Mt. Bitch to proclaim your birth! And a hundred years later, when all the Bitch Stars had aligned, you were born and made everbody's life around you a living hell, because YOU! ARE SUCH! A BITCH!
- Goku delivers one to Freeza without realizing it.
Freeza Unfortunately, Vegeta and I were having a disagreement. He wanted himself to live, and well... I didn't.
Goku Why do you wanna die?
Freeza No, I meant I wanted him to di-
Goku Is it because you look weird?
Freeza WHAT?!
Goku Oh well you know you've got that big head, those weird lips, and that tail -
(Freeza attacks Goku, who just shrugs it off)
Goku And you've got no ears...
Freeza Okay, NO!
(Freeza attacks Goku again, much more violently. Goku just shrugs it off again)
Goku And to top it all off? You're really kind of a jerk.
- Recap Episode: Parodied hilariously with Dragon Ball Kai Abridged, which recaps the entire Saiyan/Vegeta saga in a little more than two minutes.
- Retirony: Probably coincidental, but Zarbon mentioned that his one-year anniversary with his girlfriend was coming up in the very episode that Vegeta kills him.
- Readings Blew Up the Scale: During Freeza and Vegeta's power struggle, Freeza's scouter climbs up to "F**K THIS, I'M OUT" and then explodes.
- Record Needle Scratch: Happens when the warrior Namek confronting Freeza breaks out of his heroic speech because of his annoyance with Freeza's verbal heroic speech lines count; also happens after Krillin comments that he's not the first person to die in the series moments after Goku dies (leading to the first instance of the "Krillin! Too Soon!" gag).
- Recycled in Space: In-universe. Krillin repeatedly lampshades how ridiculous that aliens who have never met humans before, still managed to name things such as "Space-Australia".
- Let me see, the series mentioned (in no particular order) space ships, space armor, space eggs, space milk, space Australia -complete with space Brisbane, space Broncos and space dingos-, space babies, space Hulu, space Mexico, Spacey's, and probably some more.
- Old Space Yeller
- HOW IS THAT A THING
- Recycled Script: Parodied in Lord Slug Abridged. Several of Slug's henchmen get fried after they accidentally refer to him as "King Piccolo", and even the Dragon finds his wish very familiar...
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: When Vegeta learns that Krillin doesn't have the four-star dragonball, he breaks a blood vessel out of pure rage, causing his eyes to appear red.
- Shows up again in episode 19.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Jeice and Burter.
Ginyu: Burter was so tall... and blue! And you're so short, and red! It was the perfect little yin-yang thing we had going.
- More literal example with Gozu & Mezu.
- Remembered I Could Fly: Played with when Nappa suddenly remembers he can fly while he's flying.
- And Goku when Nimbus didn't make it to the hospital to catch him in time.
- Hindsight's a bitch, eh Raditz?
- Retcon: Dodoria's gender.
- Rhetorical Question Blunder: Happens a fair amount when Goku and Freeza interact.
Freeza: Really, killing [children] is a kindness. I could retract that kindness if you wish, but then who's the villain?
Goku: Y-You.
Freeza: N-No...that was a rhetorical question.
Goku: And I gave you a rhetorical answer.
- The Rival: Yamcha insists that he and Tenshinhan are rivals in the second Q&A. Tenshinhan disagrees.
- Rule of Funny: Sometimes used for the sake of a punchline.
- The only explanation for how Vegeta's scanner readout was upside down when he was wearing it on the same side as usual.
- And also probably the only reason that Bojack is inside King Kai's planet when in the movie, he's actually in a star that happened to be near King Kai's planet.
- As well as the reason Goku has a horrific memory followed by an aneurysm when seeing Popo at the start of Season 2, yet the same episode has a flashback depicting him casually asking Popo for a ride to fight Vegeta and Nappa.
- For one thing, we don't know that he was ever face to face with Popo in the Lookout. For another, a lot of things are scarier when you're helpless in a hospital bed.
- Fake Namek.
- Retired Monster: Dende describes the horror and blood-spilling that occurred when there was a drought and Guru had to lead them through it. And he was not talking about the drought.
- Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies: Vegeta tries to do this when he's fed up with the idiocy in the first season between Nappa and Goku.
Vegeta: That's it, everyone dies! Say goodbye to your planet, Kakarot!
Goku: That's not very nice.
Vegeta: OF COURSE NOT, I'M FUCKING EVIL!
- Rule of Three: A few of these are slipped in every now and then.
Vegeta: "I find Cui, I kill Cui. I find Dodoria, I kill Dodoria. I find this Dragonball, I take this Dragonball."
- Running Gag: The "Krillin Owned" tally, references to how weak Raditz is, Piccolo calling Gohan a nerd, Yamcha calling Tenshinhan and Chaozu gay (with Krillin picking up the slack after Yamcha dies), and Krillin being told it's Too Soon after making an insensitive remark (i.e., comparing the rundown city to New Orleans during his training, loudly proclaiming that he's not the first to die after Goku dies, telling Goku that Chaotzu is "here... and there... and there..." after Chaotzu exploded).
- Vegeta's use of the titles of rock songs ("Ballroom Blitz" by Sweet and "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by The Scorpions") for a Pre-Ass Kicking One Liner.
- For the first few episodes, DOOOOOOOOOOOOOODGE! (It shows up again later.)
- Also, Goku's Kaio-Ken. Every time he shouts the name, someone goes "[something][1] What?" and gets punched in the face. Happens twice to Vegeta, and it even happens to Bardock during the special -- he gets a future vision of Goku using it and stops blocking his opponent's moves.
- Zarbon's DoubleEntendres that do nothing but heavily imply that he's gay even though episode 17 reveals that he's straight and just so happens to speak in homosexual innuendo.
- Bojack being stuck in the center of King Kai's planet.
- "I don't know what this [name] is, but it sounds [adjective]."
- One that shows up in a couple recent episodes:
Character A: "(talks about bringing something along for an emergency)."
Character B: "Krillin?"
Character A: "Krillin."
- In episode 18:
Not Gohan: [says or does something creepy]
Gohan: I need an adult.
Not Gohan: I am an adult.
- Krillin can't shut up when he's scared.
- George Takei.
Oh my...
- "I did it in the pod on the way here."
- One appears to be forming where someone mentions Yamcha, and another person remarks that they don't know who he is, but still manage to make fun of him for being weak.
- "Quack!"
- Recently, the person who gives the disclaimer will die that episode.
- As of Episode 24, cutting off Yamcha before he can say anything.
- This gag is the result of Real Life Writes the Plot due to Yamcha and Kami's voice actor Vegeta3986 leaving the team. Kami was quickly given a replacement, but to emphasize Yamcha's Butt Monkey status they don't let him speak.
- It hurts to laugh.
- Goku thinks his enemies have comic book super powers, such as being X-Men or having Bat-Vision.
S
- Sadist Teacher: Mr. Popo
Kami: Mr. Popo, where did you send them?
Popo: I'll tell you where they're not: safe.
- Sanity Slippage: Trying to cope with the fact that Gohan stole one of his dragonballs, Vegeta starts to lose his mind, and his eyes become bloodshot. He soon snaps out of it though when someone else catches his attention.
- Schedule Slip: Lampshaded by Krillin in episode 24, when he mentions that it feels like they've been on Namek for a whole year.
- Specials after the first season would often raise the question of when the second season was starting and harshly shout down the person asking it.
- In one FAQ special the question on the schedule for the show was finally addressed... by Bubbles.
- The Scream: Krillin in episode 13, though he's prone to shrieking in horror anyway. Just usually not to the extent where it goes on longer than a minute and can be heard miles away.
Vegeta: Ugh, I just got here and already this planet's annoying me.
- Vegeta gives off the granddaddy of all screams in episode 18. It can be heard from EVERYWHERE.
Gohan: "Krillin, do you hear that?"
Krillin: "I feel that."
Freeza: "What the devil is that noise?"
Goku in his spaceship: "Ahh, time for a delicious sports dri--huh? The heck is that?"
King Yemma in the afterlife: "Purgatory... Hell... Denise? Denise, do you hear that? Oh God, is that my wife!? LEAVE ME ALONE! YOU ALREADY TOOK THE KIDS, WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT!?"
Trunks from 20 years in the future, on another planet, in another solar system, in an alternate timeline: "Alright mom. Once that time machine is done, I can go back into the past to save Goku and my Fathe--... Daddy?"
Vegeta: Crushed and broken beneath an unconscious, naked child. Yup, I think I'm done here.
- As Freeza and Vegeta are fighting, Freeza's scouter keeps counting higher and higher before reading, "F**k This, I'm Out" and exploding.
- Selective Obliviousness: Kami doesn't notice Mr. Popo's Alternative Character Interpretation, even when it's directed at him.
- Self-Parody: Dragonball Z Kai Abridged, which parodies the very concept of The Abridged Series by retelling the entire first season in two minutes.
- Sentai: The Ginyu Force. Vegeta lampshades this by asking Gohan if he's watched any (how he'd know of those shows on the other hand...).
- Space Hulu.
- Figures.
Gohan: Vegeta, if you don't mind me asking, what are we in for?
Vegeta: Ever watched Power Rangers?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: Ninja Turtles?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: Sailor Moon?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: Beetleborgs?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: VR Troopers?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: Samurai Syber Squad?
Gohan: No.
Vegeta: ...TattooedTeenageAlienFightersFromBeverlyHills?
Gohan: Oh yeah!
Vegeta: God dammit!
- Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Gohan manages to make this sound badass, who is usually treated with a Flat What before he tells them in laymen's terms.
Gohan: I'M GOING TO EVISCERATE YOU, AND USE YOUR GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT AS A CONDOM WHILE I FORNICATE WITH YOUR SKULL!
Nappa: What.
Gohan: I'M GONNA SKULL**** YOU!
- She's A Man In The Original Series: Dodoria.
- Ship Tease: Bulma dreamed about Vegeta coming to rape her. Okay, yeah, not the best tease, but they do canonically hook up, so...
- Shoot the Medic First: Directly from the source material, but Dende is nice enough to point out that he's the white mage and no-one fucks with the white mage, before being blown up.
- Shoot the Messenger: Freeza in Episode 18.
Acai: Lord Freeza, the Ginyu Force are scheduled to arrive in five minutes.
Freeza: Thank you, Acai.
Acai: Also, after rising concerns with our personnel...exploding, we've decided to form a union.
Freeza: Adorable. (Acai explodes)
- He resorts to this in the previous episode to end a rather uncomfortable discussion regarding Zarbon's sexuality.
Minion: Lord Freeza, Vegeta's broken out of the healing tan-*BOOM!*
Freeza: Oh no, that minion died. Could you go and fix that and we'll continue this conversation never.
Zarbon: Um, didn't he say something about Vegeta?
- King Vegeta in Episode 25.
- Chichi threatens Krillin with this after Krillin asks what she would do if hypothetically he were to reveal the fates of Goku and Gohan after the fight with Raditz.
- Not just shooting the messenger but she threatens to "Castrate the messenger in his sleep with a rusty carving knife." Ouch.
- Shoryuken: Freeza performs one on King Vegeta in a flashback. He even shouted it, with accompanying an "You win!"
- Shout-Out: Beside ones to other Abridged Series, there are shout outs that range from Pokemon to Looking for Group.
Nappa: For pony!
- This scream by the Ricola guy in episode 2 (shown in this point in the video) sounds a bit like R2D2's scream.
- In the announcement video of how the series will be hosted at That Guy With The Glasses, Vegeta portrayed himself as "The Nostalgia Saiyan".
- A parody of the Ghostbusters theme is featured at the end of episode 10.
- The insult "team-killing fucktard" is used in Bardock Abridged.
- "This season. You." Possibly doubles as a shout-out to Jo Jos Bizarre Adventure Abridged, considering Antfish is a member of Team Four Star, and Lanipator made a guest appearence as Mr. Popo in that series.
- A more obvious one to ATHF is the
Plutoniansfake Namekians.
- A more obvious one to ATHF is the
- "MOOOOOOOOOOOOON!!!!"
- The TV reporter who is asked for a word to describe how dead Yamcha is gets addressed as "Mr. Kent". He also tells Jimmy to get a picture of the bald one.
- "Damn it man, I'm a doctor, not an English teacher!"
- Krillin calling Dende Little Green might be a reference to the UK dub, in which Piccolo was referred to as Big Green... which Krillin calls Nail.
- During the Curb Stomp Battle between Zarbon and Vegeta, while Vegeta is being head butted by Zarbon, he can be heard saying poit and troz.
- From Episode 6: "YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS."
- Episode six has one for The Monarch
Green Bug: Welcome to Oz, bitch! You (Vegeta) with the spiky hair, you're gonna be my bitch! I'm gonna sell you for a cigarette but not before I violate you because you're my bi-
- From the Bardock special:
(Bardock is under the pile of the dead bodies of his teammates.)
Bardock: Oh, God! It's true! You do soil yourself when you die! Oh, God, it's everywhere! It's in my Dodoria wounds!
- "No." "Don't be rude, Nappa."
- The title for Episode 13: Dr. Briefs Made This Episode In A Cave... WITHABOXOFSCRAPS!
- In Episode 14, Krillin references the ACDC song "Big Balls" when he sees the Namekian Dragon Balls.
Krillin: Whoa, those things look huge! AC/DC be damned.
- Vegeta, I can't...believe it! That's when Krillin and Piccolo do their
multi-form techinqueTwin Jitsu. - From episode 17:
- Vegeta, I can't...believe it! That's when Krillin and Piccolo do their
Vegeta: M-my power is Maximum...
- Also from Episode 17: Appule can be seen playing Tenkaichi Budokai 3 as himself fighting Bardock. Doubles as a Call Back to the Bardock: TAS special.
- Gozu and Mezu from episode four of season one introduce themselves and speak in German accents just like Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon's body builder characters Hans and Franz from Saturday Night Live
- When the Ginyu Force landed on Planet Namek in Episode 18, they greet Freeza, saying "We're here", in a manner oddly similar to a group of villains synchronize when they're speaking along with having a very shallow and grave voice. (Alternatively, it could be a reference to |Poltergeist. Or both.)
- Episode 19: As he fights Gohan and Krillin, Guldo (who can stop time) does something in particular.
Guldo: ZA! WARUDO!
Krillin: What are you (time stop) going on abou- (a steamroller drops on him)
Guldo: You see that? That was just a taste of my power! (A still intact Krillin lifts the steamroller) Huh?
Krillin: Ow! What the hell was that?
Guldo: (in disbelief) That... was supposed to crush you.
Krillin: Gohan, did you see it? His power! He can--
Gohan: Stop time?
Krillin: --summon steamrollers!
Gohan: Y-You sure about that?
Krillin: Positive!
- Vegeta pulls a "Look at your X, now look at me" in episode 19.
- The " find a stranger in the Alps" line is a Shout Out to an edited line from the TV version of The Big Lebowski.
- Piccolo's Big Damn Heroes moment in Episode 25 accompanied by theme music for a different Demon King.
- In the Christmas Special, Piccolo says to Turles, "Bitch, you look like Goku."
- Piccolo and Turles also reference Harry Partridge and his "Nicholas Cage Wants Cake" short.
Turles: You want this kid?
Piccolo: I want him.
Turles: You want this kid?
Piccolo: I want him.
Turles: You want this kid?
Piccolo: I want him.
Turles: You want--you want--
Piccolo: I WANT THAT KID!
- In the Bardock Special, there are numerous shoutouts to Image Boards and the memes prevalent on them:
Dodoria: That Bardock's a pretty cool guy.
Zarbon: He conquers planets and doesn't afraid of anything.
Freeza: Doesn't afraid of anything indeed.
- And the whole of Episode 20 to Pro Wrestling.
- Also, Recoome's theme song is E1M1 from Doom. ...because that's what his name rhymes with.
- Super Kami Guru tells Dende that he could be Batman.
- And the whole of Episode 20 to Pro Wrestling.
Dende: I don't know who that is!
Super Kami Guru: This is why we need TV!!!
- Vegeta finishes off Recoome and Burter with a Renegade interrupt.
Goku: Vegeta! That was not very Paragon!
Vegeta: Renegade for life.
- When Goku asks if Vegeta actually lost to Recoome:
Ghost Nappa: You fell down some stairs.
Vegeta: I fell down some stairs.
- A great one in Episode 23 as Jeice meets his demise at the hands of Vegeta:
Jeice: (right before he dies) Clever girl.
- Again in Episode 23
Vegeta: (after getting punched by Jeice) Thank you, sir. May I have another?
- In Episode 24: "Stop right there, Namekian scum!"
- Also: "SUMMONITSUMMONITSUMMONITSUMMONIT-"
- When Mr. Popo is seen growing pot at the end of Episode 24, he is humming "Because I Got High" by Afroman.
- In Episode 24: "Stop right there, Namekian scum!"
Mr. Popo: I'm not getting rid of it.
Kami: Are you kidding? That shit's great for my glaucoma.
- The wilhelm scream is referred to as such in episode 24, when the soldiers are discussing, and trying to imitate, it.
- In Episode 25, one of Gohan's Unstoppable Rages references another character famous for them:
- In Episode 25, Piccolo arrives to battle against Freeza accompanied by Magus's Theme.
- After Krillin cuts Freeza's tail off in Episode 25, you can hear him make Curley and Zoidberg's 'whoop' sound as he runs.
- In Episode 25, Councilor Nappa appears to be wearing a particularly familiar yet oddly concerning choice of hats.
- Lord Slug says Get Over Here/Come Here when he extends his arms to grab Goku.
- Also, after Lord Slug has conquered earth.
Chichi: Bulma, Gohan is missing. And so is the outfit Piccolo gave him. [[[Beat]]] And Red Dawn is on Netflix!
[cut to Gohan fighting Slug's henchmen]
Gohan: WOLVERINES!!!
- Piccolo comments that Freeza's third form will make Ridley Scott sue them.
- The following is an odd reference to GTA IV
Krillin: I'm an optimist.
Vegeta: You're an idiot.
- During Vegeta's Beam Spam attack in Episode 27:
- The line "Please don`t break my arm" from Lord Slug Abridged is spoken like it`s being read from textspeak. This is possibly a reference to a troll on second life named Ralph Pootawn. He`s a big green creature that when is asked to "Plz" not do something responds with "No".
- In episode 29, Goz sings a bit of "Haben sie Gehort das Deutsche Band?" from The Producers.
- Shown Their Work: In episode 19, Krillin says "I once had a crush on a little Indian boy that I thought was a girl..." This actually happened (with Upa) in Dragon Ball.
- Shut UP, Hannibal: Delivered to Freeza in Episode 25.
Freeza: Well, well, well. I'm legitimately surprised that I missed one of you. But that's just fine, because I've been working on some jokes. Now tell me if you've heard this one. How many Namekians does it take to--
*gets punched and sent flying*
Piccolo: Just one.
- Freeza gets it again in Episode 28.
Freeza: Oh please, everyone's always on about the children. I already tried leaving them alive, but all they do is grow up under my rule or dedicate their pathetic lives to revenge. Usually both. Really, killing them this a kindess. I can retract that kindness if you wish, but then who's the villain?
Goku (totally lost): Y... you.
- Sibling Rivalry: Although the two are never shown interacting with each other (just as in the actual series), Freeza and Kooler really hate each other. Freeza repeatedly calling Kooler a prick and all.
- Then again, Kooler freely admits that he's a prick.
- Sink or Swim Mentor: Piccolo
"Anyway, I figure, in order to unleash your hidden potential, I'd have to put you in immense physical danger, so I'm gonna throw you at that mountain."
- Hilarity Ensues when it doesn't work.
- Slasher Smile: Vegeta shows a nice one, just after he gets a warm greeting by Namekian villagers who tell him where find the next Dragon Ball. Cue the opening.
- Ginyu has a hell of a slasher smile himself after punching a hole in his own chest, Kubrick Stare and all.
- Freeza seems to have one all of the time.
- Sliding Scale of Villain Threat: The Christmas Tree of Might falls not only under Global Threat, but is classified as "Disney Evil" when Goku learns that it's sucking all the Christmas Joy out of the planet.
- Smoke Shield: Parodied
Krillin: Did we get him?
Gohan: Krillin, we can feel his energy, why even bother asking?
Krillin: I'm an optimist.
Vegeta: You're an idiot.
- So Last Season: Piccolo's weighted clothing.
Piccolo: Don't think you have the upper hand. I'm still wearing weighted armor.
Freeza: Weighted armor, hm? How quaint. How much does it weigh?
Piccolo: Same as it always did. One hundred kilo's... [[[Beat]] and Slasher Smile from Freeza] Oh. That concept kinda lost meaning after a while, didn't it?
Gohan: Krillin, that's not my dad!
Krillin: Gohan, of course it's your dad! Goku, what's your favorite food?
Goku/Ginyu: Waldorf salad.
Krillin: See? Double Baconatohshit.
- Later:
Goku: [dazed] Yay, I'm me again!
Krillin: Wait... Goku, what is your favorite food?
Goku: [confused] ...Favorite?
Krillin: He's him again!
- Soundtrack Dissonance: This plays while Nappa annihilates the Earth's military. From Nappa's perspective, though, the music is very appropriate, since he considers it to be his best day ever.
- Freeza's "favorite things" song.
- In Episode 27, while Freeza is terrorizing Vegeta and the others, Goku is sitting in his pod singing "Lime in the Coconut" and "Row, Row, Row Your Boat". King Kai and Tien actually join in on the last one.
- Space Pirate: Bojack, who was a modern criminal type in-series (or rather, movie), but here is a traditional arrrr type, possibly to make up for the fact that he is a voice-only character.
- Space X: From "space pods", "space armor", "space barns" and "space ducks" to "Space Vogue", "space Twitter," "Space Skype," "Space Hulu," freakin' "Space Mexico" and "space Old Yeller".
- Lampshaded by Piccolo in episode 2, providing the quote on the Space X page.
- Lampshaded once again when we learn that Jeice (who had an Unexplained Australian Accent in the original series dub) comes from Space Australia.
Jeice: "More specifically, Space Brisbane. Go Space Broncos!"
Gotta be careful though Burter, or a space dingo'll eacher space baby.
- The "Space Brisbane" part was specifically to set up a donation request to help the real Brisbane, which was being ravaged by floods at the time.
- Episode 20 gives us space sodas, space burgers, and a restaurant called Spacey's.
It's good food, in space
- Episode 23 mentions Space Pickles, and Krillin mistakenly says Jeice is from Space New Zealand.
- Planet Namek is the Space Boonies, according to Freeza.
- Piccolo switched from Myspace to Spacebook.
- There are even Space Eggs
- For those who are curious, here's the complete list: Space Pods, Space Armor, Space Barns, Space Ducks, Space Twitter, Space Mexico, Space Skype, Space Hulu, Space Oz, |Space Australia, Space Brisbane, a sports team called the Space Broncos, Space Dingos, Space Babies, Space Soda, Space Burger, a restaurant called [2], [3], Space VB, Space Boonies, Space Pickles, Space New Zealand, Space Cats, arguably Myspace, Spacebook, Space Eggs, Space Milk, Hot Space Potato, and Old Space Yeller[4]. In their playthrough of Halo: Reach, there's also a mention of Space Europe.
- Spared by the Adaptation: The Kannasans, though they died in the original show, managed to miraculously repopulate, as said by Vegeta in episode 26.
- Special Edition Title: The Ginyu Force episodes use their title sequence instead of the regular.
- Special Guest: Kyle Hebert (the voice of the narrator, teenage Gohan, and Ox King from the FUNimation dub of the actual series) makes an appearance as the narrator at the end of the second movie, which was before the official formation of Team Four Star but contained most of the original voices of this abridged series.
- Hebert also provided his voice for the role of Santa Claus in the Christmas Tree of Might special.
- Christopher Sabat, the voice of Vegeta in the Funimation dub, makes a cameo as the voice of two technicians in the Bardock Special.
- Becomes utterly hilarious when you think he and Lani are in pretty much the same role, what with voicing the majority of the cast and all.
- And Christopher Robin Miller of Professor Layton fame. He gives Bubbles a classy British accent in Lord Slug Abridged.
- Spell My Name with an "S": In episode 17, Vegeta almost used the dub spelling of Freeza's name in his note.
- Spoiler: Shouted constantly by the people on Freeza Planet 419 (A.K.A. Kanassa) after the native species mysteriously repopulates itself. All of these are It Was His Sled to the fandom, but none of them have happened in-universe yet.
"Bulma and Vegeta have a kid!"
"Cell reaches Perfect form!"
"The real Buu is a child!"
"Goten and Trunks become a guy!"
"Gohan is the strongest in the universe but still doesn't do craaaap!"
- Squee: Goku does one when King Kai warns him about Freeza.
- Standard Pre-Ass-Kicking Snippet: Alluded to but never implemented in Episode 5 when Vegeta tells the Arlian king, "I'm about to rock you...like a hurricane" in reference to the projectile Chunky Updraft.
- Used again by Vegeta by in the stinger for episode 27, complete with the music... till Freeza stops it dead in its tracks, prompting the comment he should've known it was just a one-hit wonder.
- Stay in the Kitchen: Dr. Briefs to his wife.
- Stealth Hi Bye: Ginyu pulls the Hi part on Vegeta twice.
Ginyu: Hey, Vegeta.
Vegeta: Hey, Ginyu.
- Stealth Pun: Recoome's Leitmotif is "At Doom's Gate" from Doom, punning on his famous "Recoome rhymes with doom" line.
- Stay Where You Are And We'll Shoot You
Krillin: Don't you mean "Or we'll shoot you"?
Mook: We know what we said.
- Stock Phrases: Freeza keeps count of how many times he hears these from would-be heroes. He keeps track of even more than we do due to his constant exposure to heroic speeches; phrases such as "We're... going to... fuck your face!", which we would consider unique ones, he counts as stock, having heard it twelve times so far.
- And as for the more common ones?
Namekian Elder: That...that wasn't part of the deal!
Freeza: Aaaand FIVE HUNDRED! Dodoria, show 'em what they've won!
- In the Bardock special, Freeza complains about having to hear said speeches.
- In Episode 27, Goku finally gives one Freeza has never heard: "Imma deck you in the schnoz!"
- Stock Scream: The Wilhelm Scream can be heard in the Bardock Special. Also, from the Bardock Special onwards, the dying screams of the characters from Team Fortress 2 are used for the deaths of almost all mooks.
- The Wilhelm Scream is discussed by a pair of mooks in episode 23. They're discussing it and trying (and failing) to imitate it; they get it right when Vegeta kills them.
- Straight Man:
- The hilariously violent Vegeta does not suffer fools lightly.
Vegeta: Nappa, what are you doing?
Nappa: It's his turn, Vegeta; I have to wait for him.
Vegeta: (sputters in disbelief, as his nose starts bleeding)
Nappa: You okay, Vegeta?
Vegeta: Yes, just... just an aneurysm from the sheer stupidity.
Nappa: Huh. Didn't think you were that stupid, Vegeta!
Vegeta: (screams in rage) 9 minutes, 18 seconds. 9 minutes, 18 seconds!
Nappa: What's that, Vegeta?
Vegeta: Happiest. Moment. Of. My life!
Vegeta: I'm surrounded by idiots.
Goku: I thought you were surrounded by gumdrops and ice cream!
[Vegeta screams in anguished frustration]
Zarbon: Vegeta! How dare you ram into me when I'm thinking about Lord Freeza and my thong.
Vegeta: Yeah... just going to ignore that one entirely.
- Tenshinhan, while ironically being labeled gay, seems like a straight guy, almost on par with how he's portrayed in the English dubs of DB and DBZ.
Tenshinhan: I'm the only serious character in this show. That's the joke.
- Also, Nail, especially in comparison with Butt Monkey Krillin and his senile and Ax Crazy master, Guru.
- Stop Helping Me!: In episode 22, Super Kami Guru talks up Nail to Freeza something fierce...
Guru: Please. Nail isn't afraid of you. He is the strongest of our race!
Freeza: Oh really?
Nail: ...uhhh, sir?
Guru: Yeah, Nail's gonna destroy your sorry ass! They wouldn't be able to air it on the news because it'll be so BRUUUTAL!
Nail: Sir, seriously!
Guru: Hush, Nail! I'm speaking for you.
- Strange Minds Think Alike: After Nail makes it clear to Krillin that he doesn't appreciate the nickname Krillin tried to give him...
Guru: Big Greeeeeen!
Krillin and Gohan: "I've got a Dragonball!"
- Vegeta and Zarbon in Episode 17 try to lay low and don't want to fly around like a jackass saying "I've got a Dragon Ball!"/ "Come to papa, you bald bastard!". They were going to say "Come and get me, Freeza" but what they heard works too.
- Gohan and Vegeta singing Don't Stop Me Now in episode 18.
- Vegeta and Zarbon in Episode 17 try to lay low and don't want to fly around like a jackass saying "I've got a Dragon Ball!"/ "Come to papa, you bald bastard!". They were going to say "Come and get me, Freeza" but what they heard works too.
- Stupid Chancellor: Nappa to King Vegeta.
- Stupid Sacrifice: Even Piccolo realizes that he could have simply grabbed Gohan rather than take the hit for him.
- Stupidity Nosebleed: Nappa makes Vegeta have one in episode 9
- Sudden Humility:
Gohan: With this powerup, I'm now as strong as you were when we fought on Earth!
Vegeta: Congratulations! You're still weaker than the last 3 guys I killed.
Gohan: Wow. I now know what it's like to feel like Krillin.
Krillin: Sucks, doesn't it?
- Super Senses: Namekians and hearing. Piccolo can hear people talking... from the other side of the planet.
Gohan (stuck on top of a cliff) How am I supposed to get down from here>
Piccolo (from really far away) CLIMB DOWN!
Gohan: I can't even get any food or water! What should I do?
Piccolo: I SAID CLIMB DOWN!!
Gohan: If only I had some sticks or reeds lying around... I could make a makeshift ladder, or a rope...
Piccolo: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
- Similarly:
Dende: He is on Namek.
Gohan: Wait, where is he?
Dende: On Namek.
Piccolo (from the other side of the planet): You dumbass!
Krillin: Why didn't it bring him here?
Dende: You must be specific.
Gohan: Oh, so it's a sort of monkey's paw; you have to be careful what the hubris in your wish is.
Piccolo (still distant): NERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRD!
- Lord Slug's weakness, which Piccolo totally exploits; Piccolo doesn't succumb as well, becuase he ripped his own ears off first.
- Super Sentai Stance: The Ginyu Force, as expected. In Episode 22, Goku tells Ginyu it's boring, and an offended Ginyu says that he makes these poses to raise morale.
- Surrounded by Idiots: Vegeta uses these exact words when he realizes Goku's no brighter than Nappa.
- Also Freeza, much to his chagrin.
- Later subverted when Ginyu, quirky as he might be, calms Freeza down with sensible advice.
- Also Freeza, much to his chagrin.
- Suspiciously Specific Denial: Gohan's stupid-looking watch tells time, and nothing else...
- When Vegeta asks Krillin to almost kill him.
Krillin: And there's no reprecussion for this?
Vegeta: I will not punch you.
Krillin: Oddly specific.
T
- Take That: The AWA special is an affectionate Take That to the crew at Daizenshuu EX... at least, we hope it's affectionate, considering they interviewed TFS on their podcast and played the video at their panel...
- Another one is directed at Dragonball Evolution:
Goku: "Man, this is worse than that time I was in high school, and all the guys called me "Geeko", and I was Piccolo's slave, I couldn't get ChiChi to like me, and... Oh wow, I hit that rock harder'n I thought."
- And then there's this:
Nappa: Wait, Vegeta! Does that mean we've offended EVERYONE?!
Vegeta: Hold on a minute, let me think... DRAGONBALL: THE MOVIE!
Nappa: Haha...aha! Aaaaah, high school!
- And then this jab at a certain dub.
Krillin: I know! I'll call you Big Green!
Nail: CALL ME THAT AGAIN AND I WILL SNAP YOUR NECK!
- Vegeta says this to Gohan after he runs into him in episode 18.
- There are several in the Bardock special, aimed at the later villians and the GT saga, when Bardock sees into the future as he is dying.
Bardock: But wait...wait, there's more. He fights...a giant green bug...man. And then a giant...pink...manchild. Oh no, it's dark again...where is...
Para Para Brothers: *rapping and dancing*
Bardock: ...and I now welcome the sweet embrace of death...
- Speaking of GT, in Episode 20, when Vegeta introduces himself, the "Step into the Grand Tour!" rap from Funimation's GT dub (prior to the season boxsets) plays. He quickly says "Oh the fuck with this!" and attacks Recoome.
- Also from Episode 20...
Vegeta: Wrestling's fake.
Crowd: *boos him*
- In the Lord Slug special
Dr Briefs: Quick, get me Bruce Willis, Steve Buscemi, and Aerosmith!
Oolong: What about Ben Affleck?
Dr Briefs: (sharply) What about bacon? (Remember that Oolong is a talking pig)
- Taking You with Me: Lord Slug to Goku in Lord Slug Abridged.
- Take Off Your Clothes: Vegeta to Krillin and Gohan in Episode 24.
Vegeta: Now both of you... strip.
Krillin: Uuuuuhh...
Vegeta: I've got body armor for you.
Krillin: Less awkward.
- Apparently, King Yemma has been having newly dead arrivals remove their clothes for laughs. In episode 28:
King Yemma: Next! Strip. (stamp.) Next! Strip. (stamp.) Next! Strip. (zipping sound, King Yemma leans forward.) Nice!
Recoome: Recoome thanks you.
- Talk Like a Pirate: On King Kai's planet, Bojack is given a pirate accent, it's currently unknown if this will stick.
- Talk to the Fist: Jeice repeatedly gets interrupted by being punched by Goku in Episode 21.
- Talking to Himself: Even though the cast is significantly larger than most Abridged Series, multiple performance is still unavoidable (Lanipator in particular, who voices Krillin, Piccolo, and Vegeta).
- Lampshaded at Youmacon 2009, where Lani intros himself as playing Chris Sabat.
- Technology Levels: Unknown where Earth is, but Freeza is seen using Wikipedia, SpaceTwitter, and Space Skype.
- Vegeta watches Space Hulu.
- Figures.
- Vegeta watches Space Hulu.
- Tempting Fate:
Krillin: It's been tough, but now we'll never have to see that rotten Saiyan ever again! [Vegeta crashes to Earth] ...Alive again. We'll never have to see him alive again. That's what I meant.
Vegeta: They've broken my body... I've failed in my mission to find the Dragon Balls... I even lost my tail... but at least it can't get any worse... from here...
Ghost Nappa: Vegeeeeta...
- Earlier:
Krillin: Ow! This can't possibly get any worse.
Popo: Hi!
Krillin: AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! (Krillin Owned Count: 4)
- Then later:
Goku: Oh well, we won't need [all four senzu beans] on Namek!
- Still later:
Ginyu: This is RIDICULOUS! But at least I'm not trapped in some useless body.
(Vegeta warps behind him)
Vegeta: Give me a minute.
(Beatdown ensues)
- And then...
Dende: "I'm your white mage. Nobody fucks with the white mage." *Freeza'd*
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: You wouldn't even think about it until after the reveal, but Dodoria is pink
- And looks like she has lipstick and eyeshadow on. Not to mention her going nuts whenever someone calls her fat.
- That Came Out Wrong: From episode 23:
Ginyu (as Goku): First off, we have to touch on Freeza's balls.
Jeice: Uhhh, sir...
Ginyu (as Goku): Yes, yes, realized the moment I said it...
- That's What She Said: Krillin's response to Burta's remark about being "the fastest in the universe."
- The Unintelligible: Lord Slug is this prior to the granting of his wish.
- During an FAQ special, Bubbles answered the question of how the episodes were scheduled. Yes, the monkey. And no, they didn't have subtitles this time.
- The Worf Effect: Like, every Z warrior except Goku and Gohan. Then again, justified due to the series it's based on.
- Theme Naming: Parodied in Episode 25. In DBZ canon, most characters from a certain family, race or faction are all theme-named. In particular, the Saiyan race are all named after vegetables (which "Vegeta" itself is short for), so the "smartass" Saiyan who informs King Vegeta of Freeza's plans is named "Butaraga"[5].
- Theme Tune Cameo: In Episode 17, Bulma is humming Romantic Ageru Yo, from the original Dragon Ball, when Krillin arrives with the Dragon Ball he got from Super Kami Guru.
- This Is for Emphasis, Bitch: Happens often, but a memorable moment is after Popo knocks Krillin off Kami's lookout (Krillin Owned Count: 3)
Popo: Enjoy the climb back up, bitch!
- Then later, after Vegeta's stolen Freeza's Dragon Balls:
Vegeta: Later, bitches!
- Taken to the extreme with Krillin's "bitch rant" at Bulma.
- This Is Gonna Suck:
Gohan: We have about 10 minutes before Vegeta finds out I stole this. *holds out a Dragonball*
- This Is Something He's Got to Do Himself: Played with as Piccolo insists this while Tenshinhan fights Nappa... despite the former's desperate pleas for help.
- This Is Sparta:
*Freeza Goon B shoots the spaceship*
Krillin: "Huh... Well there goes our ship."
Bulma (Offscreen): "WHAT THE! F***ING! HELL!?"
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Even while Nappa and Vegeta mock Krillin, Nappa points out that, "at least you've proven that your Raditz is still stronger than our Raditz."
- A literal example between Vegeta and Guldo (the green guy in the Ginyu force) in which Vegeta throws dog treats at Guldo for his own amusement
- This Trope Is Bleep: Played straight by Vegeta in episode 19 when the Ginyu Force came.
- Subverted in The Stinger:
Vegeta: SON OF A GUM-CHEWING FUNK MONSTER! WHY THE FROOD DOES ALL THIS FUNNY STUFF HAPPEN TO ME? FORGET MY LIFE! ALWAYS SURROUNDED BY MISERABLE FAILING CLODS, LIKE THIS WHOLE WORLD JUST LIKES TO BEND ME OVER AND FIND ME IN THE ALPS, LIKE I'M SOME SORT OF SLOG RECEPTICLE! WELL, AS FAR AS I CARE, THESE MISERABLE COWS CAN HAVE A FANCY BARBECUE WITH A GOD DAMN PIG!
- Although, if you're listening intently, the original doesn't quite sound as... mild... as The Stinger. If you pay attention, you can clearly hear that Vegeta's actually cursing. (For instance, he says SH- before he's bleeped out, which doesn't carry over to SHTUFF.)
- Title Drop: Lampshaded and called out in the Christmas Tree of Might.
- Episode 29's title, "Freezer Burn", gets dropped as well.
- Too Dumb to Live: Freeza's honest view of Goku and all the nonsensical stuff he spouts out.
Freeza: N-no, that was a rhetorical question.
Goku: And I gave you a rhetorical answer.
Freeza: Good Lord, I traded in Vegeta for this.
- And then:
Goku: Wow, that was a close one. I was almost out of the frying pan and into the...lava.
Freeza: How do you function?
- Too Funny to Be Evil: NAPPA.
- Took a Level in Badass: Played straight and lampshaded with Goku, Gohan and the 'Z Warriors' in season 1. And then brutally subverted in season 2:
Guru: [about Krillin] I see something within this young man: strength yet untapped, power yet unleashed. Now hold still, as I unleash the valley of strength hidden deep within! [nimbus of lights surround Krillin] There. I have unlocked your hidden potential.
Krillin: Huh...I don't feel that different.
Guru: It wasn't that much.
Krillin: Huh. So this is my full potential?
Guru: Yes.
Krillin: So it's...
Guru: ...all downhill from here.
Krillin: Just like Yamcha.
Guru: I don't know what this Yamcha is but it sounds disappointing.
- Too Soon: Another running gag involving Krillin where anytime Krillin says something "offensive" on the heels of a tragedy -- or in the case of comparing the ruined time city to New Orleans, making reference to a tragic event that shouldn't be mocked (Hurricane Katrina), a character yells, "Krillin! Too soon!"
- Took a Level In Dumbass: Goku's getting stupider with every episode. And it's hilarious.
- Training from Hell: Played straight (though hilariously) with Piccolo. Subverted with King Kai. And then there's the Training Montage. Taken to its literal extreme with Mr. Popo. Check out 2:45 for a sample.
Gohan: So, how was your training, Krillin?
[Krillin freezes as he hears Popo's mocking laughter in his head]
Krillin: [weeping] First rule of Popo's training! Do not talk about Popo's training!
Gohan: Why are you crying?
Krillin: SECOND RULE OF POPO'S TRAINING!
- Both Gohan and Dr. Briefs try to deconstruct the idea of Training from Hell by pointing out the longterm downsides, like horrible muscle degeneration, but both are ignore by their listeners, Piccolo and Goku.
- Training Montage: This AMV sums up the training leading up to Vegeta and Nappa's landing. And it. Is. awesome.
- Tranquil Fury: How Vegeta responds to having his tail cut off.
Vegeta: [Calmly] You know... I thought I'd be angrier, what with the utter humiliation and loss of my tail... Or maybe I'm just so unbelievably enraged that I've come full circle. Oh well! Either way it's time to put an end to this.
- Then he calmly unburdens his shame of his defeat on Earth to Cui before blowing him straight to hell. It's starting to look like the only thing scarier than a raging Vegeta is a mellow one. And, of course, Mr. Popo.
"God, I love therapy."
- And used twice when his attempt to explain his superiority fall flat due to stupid remarks from Goku.
Vegeta: I'm going to start beating you now. I don't know when I'll stop.
- [Later, as he's about to crush Goku's body like a grape]
Vegeta: I'm going to enjoy this far more than I should.
- Also Bulma's answer to Krillin's "The Reason You Suck" Speech.
- And Freeza can do it too, though the tranquility isn't always stable.
Freeza: Oh, I'm sorry, I'm usually more composed. I'm just a little bit absolutely livid.
Nappa: Hilariously derailing one-liner.
- Try Not to Die: When Krillin goes out to get the Namekian Dragon Balls' password, Vegeta offers him this encouragement.
Vegeta: Try not to get yourself killed out there, God forbid you make me happy.
- Twist Ending: In Lord Slug Abridged, Guru is Lord Slug's Evil Twin.
U
- Unexplained Recovery: The entire Kanassian species miraculously repopulated. After being exterminated and eaten by giant monkeys.
- Unstoppable Rage: Vegeta in episode 18. It even drives him temporarily insane, until Gohan powering up snaps him out of it.
- Also, just like in the show Gohan is known for these in general - only now they're even more exaggerated.
- Unusual Euphemism: Guru makes it sound that him drawing out one's potential is the same as sex.
Guru: Stand still. It's your first time so I'll be gentle. Now Relax as I reach deep inside you and grab hold of your essence
- And later:
Guru: Now listen to me Dende, with these powers, you garner a huge responsibility, I need you to run as fast as you can to the Earthli-
Nail: Sir, he left you the moment after you gave him the powerup.
[Dende flys away]
Guru: That Slut!
- Useless Superpowers: The ability to see the future is often less than productive.
Bardock: Useless-ass psychic powers! *take giant energy beam to the face.*
V
- Viewers Are Geniuses: Some of the jokes are quite subtle and you'd really have to be in the know to get them.
- The obscurity of some jokes was actually lampshaded at one point.
Vegeta: Damn it Nappa, nobody's going to get that.
- Villainy Discretion Shot: Vegeta slaughters an entire Namekian village while the opening credits play.
- Villain Protagonist: Let's not kid ourselves, Vegeta is pretty much the protagonist for the first half of season 2. And he's most definitely a villain. For the moment.
- Villainous Breakdown: As of Episode 24, Freeza finally hit his when Nail tells him that while he spent an hour flying to the middle of nowhere and then spent a further fifteen minutes ripping his arm off, Dende has given the earthlings the password to the Dragonballs, shattering his polite and mocking facade for good.
Freeza: I WILL F***ING MURDER YOU!
- He gets a second one immediately after when he realizes that his entire army, including his most elite fighting force, have been bested by a 26-year-old dwarf, a five year old half-breed (not present: his Saiyan father, who wiped four of the five) and a Saiyan prince (the last of which actually killed them all) he had written off as beneath his notice. Made for a bitchin' day.
- Freeza Lampshades this in episode 25;
Freeza: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm usually far more composed. I'm just a little bit ABSOLUTELY LIVID.
- Then there's his entire fight with Goku. That seriously took a tole on Freeza's patience.
- Voice of the Legion: "I AM CHAMPION CHRISTMAS!!!"
- Voices Are Mental: Rather impressively averted. Goku and Ginyu, rather than keeping their own voices when they switch bodies, are stuck with each other's voices, but still talk like themselves. Other users of this trope should learn from them.
- Volleying Insults: Nail and Vegeta do this to each other in episode 18.
- A little between Freeza and Vegeta in Episode 25:
Freeza: I'm impressed, Vegeta. When did you graduate from Pull-Ups?
Vegeta: About the same time you got off the rag.
- Vomit Discretion Shot: Played straight, then immediately averted in episode 28. When Goku spins Freeza around holding him by his tail, Freeza doesn't make it a secret that he's going to puke. We don't get to see the actual moment... but we get to see, seconds later, Krillin getting hit by, well, the unavoidable byproduct, projected at high speed across Namek. It's just a couple frames, before it zooms out to the whole planet and we get an update to the Krillin Owned Count.
W
- Warrior Therapist: Nappa claims that he majored in Child Psychology (WITH A MINOR IN PAIN!) and goes on about the values of healthy communication... right before pounding the crap out of the guy he was talking about (Tenshinhan) because they had interrupted him while he was talking to Vegeta.
- On a less literal note, Vegeta becomes something like this, though only to himself. During his finale of Episode 10 he remarks about the possible reason behind his Tranquil Fury, and later on, after revealing the depths of his humiliation to Cui and then blowing him up to ensure that he would never tell anyone of it, Vegeta says that he loves therapy, and later on deliberately represses the memory of Dodoria's revelations. Considering that his anger seemed to have broke in Episode 18, his self-therapy doesn't really seem to be working very well.
- Waxing Lyrical: Vegeta occasionally quotes lyrics from "You're the Best Around"
- We Can Rule Together
Dodoria: We can team up against Freeza! Rule the universe...as husband and wife.
Vegeta: Repressing in 5!...4!...3!...2!...1! *BAM* ...And repressed.
- Zarbon later tries this (minus the proposal). Vegeta tells him he's already heard it.
- We Have Reserves:
(whilst watching the Namekian warriors destroy Freeza's forces)
Dodoria: ...Kinda killing our guys.
Freeza: Oh, we have more of those things back at the ship. It's not like we're losing anything valuable.
- Lord Slug goes through soldiers like copy paper.
- Well, This Is Not That Trope: Played straight at the beginning of the Bardock special:
Narrator: Long ago, on a planet long forgotten by time, a young hero was born; a righteous Saiyan warrior who would bring peace to the galaxy. This... is not his story.
- Wham! Episode: Episode 24.
- What Could Have Been: LittleKuriboh auditioned for Ginyu originally. He ended up being cast as Freeza for the sole reason that his Freeza voice was so damn good.
- What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?
Goku: Tell her [guitar riff sequence] to put dinner on. [more guitar] Because I'm hungry. [even more guitar]
- Also counts as a failed Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner.
- Also, the (MAHOGANY!) desk of King Yemma.
- Subverted with the scene of Goku leaving his spaceship at the end of Episode 20, to "Real American"(Hulk Hogan's theme song), due in part to episode 20 being a total shoutout to Pro Wrestling in general, and Wrestlemania in particular. Also something of an ironic Shout-Out to the way Hulk Hogan was always the one hero who was always thrown up against a seemingly unstoppable heel and would end their reign of terror. The major difference between the two characters would be the fact that Hogan is significantly smarter than any version of Goku. The scene actually came off pretty badass.
- What Does This Button Do?: Goku launching his ship by pressing the exact same button Dr. Briefs told him not to press.
- Whatever: Nail and Dende's response to being threatened with death by Freeza and Vegeta.
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Minor one: Since in this version Vegeta does kill of Captain Ginyu, why doesn't he show up at King Kai's planet with the other Ginyu's? Unless he's still a frog in the afterlife of course.
- What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: "We could use whales! WHAAAALES!" 3 episodes later, Nappa kills them.
Nappa: I sank their battleship! And their whales.
Aquaman: Nooooooooooooo!
- Who's Laughing Now?: Guldo, a few minutes before he's brutally murdered.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: Gohan proposes such scientific strategies such as knocking down Ape Vegeta due to his weight ratio and escaping Dodoria due to his size and mass when it should be clear he is in the fantasy world of Dragonball Z.
Y
- Yank the Dog's Chain: Team Four Star's fake Episode 2.
- Also, the end of Christmas Tree of Might. Krillin gets a girlfriend, Marron from filler, but doesn't get to keep her as she's not canon.
- Which raises questions, considering apparently Gohan was allowed to keep Icarus. Or maybe he was blown up. Continuity is kinda fucked up.
- Icarus gets eaten in the next movie.
- Also, the end of Christmas Tree of Might. Krillin gets a girlfriend, Marron from filler, but doesn't get to keep her as she's not canon.
- Yet Another Christmas Carol: Parodied at the end of the Christmas Tree of Might special. Ghost Nappa warns Vegeta that he will be visited by three ghosts. They're all Ghost Nappa.
- You Have Got to Be Kidding Me!: Said by Vegeta when his explosive technique didn't kill the heroes.
- You Will Be Assimilated: What Mr.Popo did to Blue Popo.
- You Killed My Father: Dende gets a little of this when he refuses to heal a dying Vegeta because Vegeta helped annihilate Dende's entire species.
Dende: Oh, I'm sorry. I can't hear you over the blood of my people on your hands.
- Subverted, though, in that Dende is in fact convinced to do it, if only because Freeza is busy transforming into his most powerful form and Vegeta needed the power boost from almost dying to even have a hope of matching him.
Piccolo: Now go heal Vegeta.
Dende: Why would I do that?
(Freeza shown mid transformation)
Piccolo: Because that.
Dende: Oh right, that's happening right now.
- Your Mom: Several. For instance, an offscreen extra does one toward Bardock when he tries to warn everyone that Freeza's going to blow up the planet.
Bardock: We need to raise an army!
Random Female Saiyan: Your Mom's an army!
- From the same episode as the second Cui/Vegeta exchange:
Freeza Goon A: "Damn man, you couldn't hit the broad side of a space-barn!"
Freeza Goon B: "Yeah well that's only because I'm too busy hitting the broad side of Your Mom!" *gets pwned by Gohan and Krillin.*
- Vegeta to Cui:
Cui: Where are you off to in such a hurry?
Vegeta: Off to plow your mother.
Cui: Hah! Shows what you know, Vegeta! We reproduce asexually.
Vegeta: Gross. Out of my way.
- Then appears as a Call Back in the next episode:
Cui: I could have got here sooner, but I stopped on the way to plow your mother!
Vegeta: ...My mother's dead.
Cui: I know.
- A similar exchange happens between Vegeta and Final Form Freeza in episode 27. It's much less funny this time.
Freeza: Now that we're done here, its time to send you crying home to mommy.
Vegeta: (Badly wounded) My mother's... dead...
Freeza: I know.
