- Aesop Amnesia: Apparently the case with Cordy, but she's just kidding. She does however realise the true moral of this story.
Wes: What did we learn?
Cordelia: Men are evil? No, wait, I knew that. Sex is bad?
Angel: We all knew that.
Cordelia: Okay, fine. I learned that I have two people I can count on absolutely in my life. And that's new.
- An Axe to Grind: Wes is quite proud of his new Bavarian fighting axe. Until he gets it stuck in the wall while showing off to Cordy's friends.
- Alien Blood: The amniotic fluid removed from Cordelia's womb breaks the syringe and starts eating through the floor.
- Bad Vibrations / Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: The Haxil Beast is a big demon!
- Battle Discretion Shot: Wes and Angel fighting the demon hatchling; portrayed through shadows, a gunge-splattered window, lots of noise and Wesley being tossed through the door while it's still shut (he charges back in again).
- Bizarre Baby Boom
- Blood Lust: Cordelia takes a container of Angel's pig blood out of the refrigerator and drinks it so avidly it starts flowing down her chin.
Angel: "I don’t think I ever realized just how disgusting that was."
- Bribe Backfire: Angel attempts to bribe the barkeep, only to find it's the last thing in the world that will gain this guy's confidence. He realises that looking like he wants payback on the kind of jerks who patronize the barkeep all night is a better approach.
- Broken Aesop: This episode isn't a Fantastic Aesop about unwanted pregnancy, as Cordy points out. It's about the importance of family, surrogate or otherwise.
- Collective Groan: "TWINS!" (It Got Worse).
- Comforting Comforter: Cordy is alone and crying in her bedroom after being impregnated. Phantom Dennis floats a packet of tissues over to her and then gently pulls the quilt up over her body.
- Covered in Gunge: Post-battle Wes and Angel.
- Cowardly Lion: Wes facing off with the Haxil Beast; showing the Hidden Depths that fuel his Character Development in the series.
- Don't Sneak Up On Me Like That: Cordelia is going her makeup when Angel (who naturally doesn't appear in the mirror) speaks from behind her, causing a major lipstick accident.
Cordelia: And now I look like the Joker.
- Drowning My Sorrows: Pregnant Sarina.
- Express Delivery
- Fetus Terrible: We never actually see them, but the doctor and Wesley are clearly shocked by what's on the ultrasound monitor.
- French Jerk: Cordelia files a client under F for France because she was really annoying.
- The Gunslinger: Despite his general incompetence in hand-to-hand combat, Wesley is shown to be a good shot under stress, and in fact proves to be the character most likely to use firearms as the series goes on.
- Immune to Bullets: Lampshaded, played straight and then subverted. Angel is looking up addresses for shooting ranges and Wesley comments "Guns can kill it? Well, that does make things easier!" Even though it turns out that the monster itself is either immune or highly resistant to bullets, it gets brought down anyway when Wesley uses a gun to shoot a tank of liquid helium that Angel had thrown at it, freezing the monster to death.
- Last-Second Word Swap
Wesley: If shaking your booty at the latest trendy hot spot is your idea of a life, then call me— (two beautiful women walk in) ...sick with envy.
- Literally Shattered Lives: The Haxil is killed when Angel throws a container of liquid nitrogen at it, which Wesley then shoots open with a well-placed shot, causing the Haxil to freeze in place. With its dying throes, the Haxil's psychic link with his surrogate mommies (Cordelia included) is broken, erasing his children from their wombs. Cordy climbs out, grabs a block and tackle from the ceiling, and hurls it directly at the frozen Haxil, shattering it to coldly-smoking smithereens.
- Magical Abortion: The demon fetus miraculously disappear once the Haxil is killed.
- Make It Look Like an Accident: Angel is to be the subject of a fatal shooting accident at the gun range -- unfortunately he's Immune to Bullets.
- Mama Bear: Cordy knocks out Wes when she realises he's going to kill her demon spawn; it turns out they're Mind Controlling her.
- Mistaken for Gay: Cordelia has a couple of friends come by the office. Angel and Wesley start talking to each other to distract from Cordelia having a vision and Wes flings his arm around Angel's shoulders in what he intends to be a display of brotherly affection, only to have one of the girls mutter "The good ones are always gay." This becomes a Brick Joke later when Wesley asks if Angel thinks he has a shot with the (gorgeous) girls. Angel tells him he does, then Wesley asks, "What about them thinking we're gay?" Angel replies "It adds mystery."
- Not Staying for Breakfast
- Open Says Me: Having got no answer to his phone calls and knocking, Angel just breaks into Cordy's apartment.
- Perp Sweating: Angel at the gun club.
Wilson: “I’m not telling you anything.”
Angel: “Was so hoping you’d say that.”
Angel: “She’s telepathically linked to its unborn. That’s how it’s controlling Cordelia.”
Wesley: “Of course, a psychic umbilical cord. The Hacksaw’s telepathic connection is what’s sustaining its unborn spawn.”
- Sand in My Eyes: Wes gets quite emotive when Cordy gives her True Companions speech, claiming it's "allergies".
- Sarcastic Confession: Cordy tells her date she has a jealous ghost in her apartment.
- Stealth Hi Bye
Bartender: “I didn’t see you.”
Angel: “I get that a lot.”
- Tap on the Head: Wes might not be a Watcher any more, but he's certainly inherited Giles' mantle, getting knocked out by Cordy with a Tome of Eldritch Lore.
- True Companions
- Twerp Sweating: Cordy refuses to bring her next date to meet Angel, convinced he'll act like a forbidding father. But she didn't count on Phantom Dennis! When Cordy brings Wilson over to her apartment, Dennis kills the mood by slamming the front door, brightening the lights she dims, and adjusting the radio dial to blast jaunty polka.
- Who Dares? / Good Old Fisticuffs
Haxil: WHO IS THE INTERLOPER? TO THINK YOU COULD DISTURB THE BIRTH OF MY CHILDREN? WHO ARE YOU?
Wes: “Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, rogue demon hunter. (Puts up his fists) And I’m here to fight you, Sir, to the death...preferably yours.”
- Woman in White: The girls change into white robes for the birth.
- You Are Not Alone: Cordy
Angel: "Hey...you're not alone."
- You Have No Idea Who You're Dealing With: Unfortunately the person saying this to Angel doesn't know who he's dealing with either.
