Volkswagen Tharu

The Volkswagen Tharu is a compact crossover SUV produced by the German automobile manufacturer Volkswagen. The vehicle is positioned above T-Cross and below Tiguan Allspace, sharing the position, but not marketed, with the T-Roc or the Tiguan.[1]

The Tharu was presented as a near series model VW Advanced Midsize SUV during the premiere of the Volkswagen Touareg III in March 2018.[2] Since the end of October 2018, the CUV is available in China.[3] The Tharu is built by SAIC Volkswagen.[4]

Also introduced in October 2018 was the Volkswagen Tayron, which is built by the other Volkswagen joint venture FAW-Volkswagen. The Tharu is the first Volkswagen model to be exported from China. It will also be built in Argentina, Mexico and Russia by late 2020. In Europe, the car is not currently offered.[2]

Etymology

The name of the SUV is named after Tharu people, living in Nepal and northern India. Already introduced in 2002, the Volkswagen Touareg is named after the Tuareg people living in particular in the Sahara.[5]

Technology

The Tarek is based on the MQB platform such as the SEAT Ateca that has been built since 2016 and the Škoda Karoq presented in 2017. The Tarek is manufactured under the name Tharu in its own factory in China.[4] Optically, the Tarek resembles the SEAT Ateca and Volkswagen Atlas.[2][1]

Volkswagen cooperated for the production of the vehicle with the headphone manufacturer Beats Electronics, so that a Beats audio system comes standard on the Tharu. Also, pillar-B, the logo of the headphone manufacturer can be seen.[4]

The base model of the Tharu has a torsion axis, the higher versions have a multi-link suspension.[5] The versions manufactured in Mexico and Argentina will exclusively have the 1.4 TSI 150 hp engine, with a torque converter of six or eight, [1]
