Volkswagen Atlas

The Volkswagen Atlas is a full-size crossover SUV manufactured by the German automaker Volkswagen at its Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.[6][7] The Atlas is the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, and features a transverse mounted inline-four or Volkswagen's narrow angle VR6.[3][8]

Not to be confused with Nissan Atlas.

The Atlas is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont in the Middle East,[9] Left-hand traffic countries in Africa,[10] as well as in Mexico,[11] Russia,[12] and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017.[13] In China, the Volkswagen Teramont is available with a turbocharged 2.0L or VR6 and DSG transmission.

Rear

The Volkswagen CrossBlue previewed the Atlas/Teramont as a concept diesel plug-in-hybrid mid-size crossover SUV in September 2013. The Atlas was introduced at the LA Auto Show in Los Angeles on November 17, 2016.[14] It went on sale in the United States and Canada in May 2017, as a model for 2018, with pricing starting at US$30,500.[15]

Details

Features included in the Atlas are the VW Digital Cockpit, an available 96.8 cubic feet (2.74 m3) of rear cargo space, seventeen total cup holders, a second row bench seat with room for three child safety seats, a third row seating area that can be accessed with child safety seats still in place, standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity with Volkswagen CarNet and MirrorLink, seven total stability enhancing systems, and available Volkswagen 4Motion four wheel drive system on most models.[16]

Engines

The Atlas has two gasoline engine options in the United States:[17]

  • 2.0L turbo I4, gasoline, 235 hp (175 kW), 258 lb⋅ft (350 N⋅m) of torque
  • 3.6L VR6, gasoline, 276 hp (206 kW), 266 lb⋅ft (361 N⋅m) of torque

Safety

The 2018 Atlas received the IIHS "Top Safety Pick" rating after earning "Good" ratings in all five crashworthiness tests, and a "Superior" rating on the front crash prevention test. This was in January 2018.[18]

Cross Sport

The Atlas Cross Sport (called Teramont X in China and simply Cross Sport in Mexico[19]) is a mid sized crossover SUV based on the Atlas, but with two rows of seating instead of three, and a lower roof and angled rear window to give it a sportier appearance.[20]

It debuted in North America in the beginning of 2020, as a new model for 2020. Available engines are the same as the original Atlas: a turbocharged four cylinder and a V6. The Atlas Cross Sport is offered in S, SE, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R Line trims. The Cross Sport was previewed by the concept CrossBlue Coupe in September 2013.

Facelift

At the Chicago Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the refreshed Atlas, for the model year of 2021. Changes include a new front end, which is based on the Atlas Cross Sport, redesigned wheels, new rear lights, and a new steering wheel, similar to the Volkswagen Golf VIII.
