Volkswagen Arteon

The Volkswagen Arteon is a four door fastback based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.[1] The Arteon was unveiled on 6 March 2017, at the Geneva Motor Show, and at the Chicago Auto Show for the market in North America.[2][3] The Arteon is a direct successor to the CC. Volkswagen claims that the Arteon will be more upmarket than the previous model.[4][5]

Product Launch

Launched in Europe during 2017, the Arteon is positioned above the Passat, and was heavily based on the 2015 Volkswagen Arteon concept car shown at the Geneva International Motor Show. [6] The Arteon made its debut for the United States at the 2018 Chicago Auto Show.[7]. Volkswagen delayed the launch in the United States of the Arteon due to unspecified issues with the emissions testing. Vehicles started arriving at dealerships in the US in April 2019.[8] It became available in the market in Canada in spring of 2019.[9]

Model year changes

In 2020, the Arteon was given a facelift, new shooting brake bodystyle[10], plug-in hybrid and performance Volkswagen R variants[11] were launched. The facelift included a new 10.25in (26cm) digital instrument panel in front of the driver, and an 8.0in (20cm) or 9.2in (24cm) infotainment touchscreens.

2020

Arteon Shooting Brake

In 2020, a five door station wagon variant, known as the Arteon Shooting Brake was launched.[12]

Arteon R

The Arteon R performance model, launched in 2020, featuring Volkswagen's 2.0L turbocharged petrol producing 316 bhp and 420 N⋅m (310 lb⋅ft). It will only be available in four-wheel drive through a seven-speed DSG gearbox. 0–100 km/h time (0–62 mph) is around five seconds. The Arteon R is available in both the Arteon and Arteon Shooting brake variants.[13]

eHybrid

In 2020, a plug-in hybrid of both the Arteon and Arteon Shooting Brake was launched, known as the eHybrid. Available with only the 2.0L petrol engine, it offers an electric-only range of 34 miles, and a combined output of 215bhp.[14]

Design

At the launch of the Arteon, Volkswagen Head of Design Klaus Bischoff explained: "The fact that the Arteon has gone into production with only minimal design changes from the show car demonstrates Volkswagen's appetite for innovation. Exactly like the concept car, the Volkswagen Arteon generates that 'I want it' feeling. As forecast in 2015, this car does indeed mark the start of a new design era".[15] Tobias Sühlmann, responsible for the Arteon's exterior design, explained "The athletic lines of the Arteon incorporate a highly functional overall concept. Form and function find common ground here in a progressive way. Thanks to its long wheelbase, stretched roofline, coupé-style fastback design and a large rear hatch, this gran turismo provides more space and flexibility than conventional saloons".[16]

Production

The Arteon is built in Emden, Lower Saxony, Germany.[17] A version for the Chinese market, called the CC, is built in Changchun, China. The Arteon is based on Volkswagen's modular MQB platform.

Engines

In Europe, the Arteon initially featured three turbo direct injection engines at launch: a 2.0L 280PS TSI petrol engine and two diesel engines with 150PS and 240PS. Three additional engines were introduced shortly after, the 1.5L TSI Evo petrol engine with 150PS, as well a petrol and a diesel engine, both with 190PS.[18]

In the United States, it was available in three trims — SE, SEL, and Premium — with one engine: all Arteons of 2019 will have Volkswagen's workhorse 2.0 litre turbo four, tuned to produce 268 hp and 258 lb ft of torque. Power is managed by an eight speed automatic transmission, with the choice of front or all wheel drive.[19].

Transmission

At launch, the Arteon could be combined with an automated DSG dual clutch gearbox (except 110 kW TSI in Germany, which is only available with a manual gearbox). For the TSI, the DSG gearbox is standard on engines with an output of 190PS and above; for the TDI it is standard on the 240PS version. Additionally, the 280 PS TSI and 240 PS TDI also have the Volkswagen 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard, while this is available as an option for the 140 kW TDI. All other models have front-wheel drive.[22]

Construction

The front wheel suspensions feature coil spring struts (coil springs with telescopic shock absorbers) and lower wishbones (track-stabilising scrub radius). The four-link independent rear suspensions have gas-filled shock absorbers with separate springs. Both axles are equipped with anti-roll bars.[23] The Arteon is equipped with electromechanical power steering allowing for 2.1 turns from end stop to end stop.[24]

Safety

The Arteon can be fitted with an optional safety system called Emergency Assist 2.0, and it takes advantage of four existing Volkswagen safety programs: Adaptive Cruise Control, Side Assist, Lane Assist and Park Assist. The Arteon will notice if a driver has not touched the accelerator, brakes or steering wheel for a certain length of time, and it will attempt to alert the person with sounds, visual cues and even a physical brake tap. If that does not work, Emergency Assist 2.0 takes over: the car's hazard lights switch on and it steers itself to a safe nearside lane. The system uses Lane Assist to recognize lines on the road and Park Assist to actually steer the car. Radar detection via Adaptive Cruise Control and Side Assist helps ensure the Arteon will not hit any other vehicles.[25]
