List of earthquakes in 1967
This is a list of earthquakes in 1967. Only magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquakes appear on the list. Lower magnitude events are included if they have caused death, injury or damage. Events which occurred in remote areas will be excluded from the list as they wouldn't have generated significant media interest. All dates are listed according to UTC time. Maximum intensities are indicated on the Mercalli intensity scale and are sourced from United States Geological Survey (USGS) ShakeMap data. Another year which had below normal activity. There was 11 magnitude 7.0+ events the largest of which measured 7.4. This event which struck Turkey in July was part of a series of earthquakes across the globe which made up the bulk of the death toll of 961. Turkey itself had two destructive events within days however Venezuela had the highest death toll with 300 of the years fatalities. India was struck by a large earthquake in December which caused 180 deaths.

The shock had a maximum intensity of VII (Very strong).[2] A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Bulgan Province, Mongolia on January 5 at a depth of 13.2 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe).[3] Some damage was caused.[4] A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Kermanshah Province, Iran on January 11 at a depth of 35.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VI (Strong).[5] A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on January 13 at a depth of 40.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VII (Very strong).[6] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands on January 16 at a depth of 30.0 km.[7] A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Santiago del Estero Province, Argentina on January 17 at a depth of 590.9 km.[8] A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the east coast of Honshu, Japan on January 17 at a depth of 45.8 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of V (Moderate).[9] A magnitude 6.4 aftershock struck Bulgan Province, Mongolia on January 20 at a depth of 20.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe).[10] A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China on January 24 at an unknown depth. 417 homes were destroyed.[11] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, Tajikistan on January 25 at a depth of 273.2 km.[12] A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Fox Islands (Alaska) on January 28 at a depth of 35.0 km.[13]

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Gjirokaster County, Albania on February 9 at a depth of 33.0 km. 77 homes were destroyed.[14] A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Caqueta Department, Colombia on February 9 at a depth of 55.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe).[15] 98 people were killed and $20 million (1967 rate) in property damage was reported.[16] - A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the Reykjanes Ridge on February 13 at a depth of 10.0 km.[17]
- A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck the Andaman Sea on February 14 at a depth of 30.0 km.[18]
A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Acre (state), Brazil on February 15 at a depth of 600.4 km.[19] A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Tonga on February 17 at a depth of 15.0 km.[20] A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck south of Java, Indonesia on February 19 at a depth of 80.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of IV (Light).[21] 54 people were killed and 300 were injured. 2,000 homes were destroyed and another 5,000 sustained damage.[22] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck the Ryukyu Islands, Japan on February 23 at a depth of 31.9 km.[23]

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Pichincha Province, Ecuador on March 2 at a depth of 118.9 km. This was just west of Quito.[24] A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Aegean Sea, Greece on March 4 at a depth of 15.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VII (Very strong).[25] A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Kuril Islands, Russia on March 19 at a depth of 40.0 km.[26] A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the Java Sea, Indonesia on March 24 at a depth of 598.0 km.[27] A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Hebei Province, China on March 27 at a depth of 29.7 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of V (Moderate).[28] 53,886 homes were destroyed.[29] A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Vanuatu on March 27 at a depth of 15.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VII (Very strong).[30]

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Papua (province), Indonesia on April 9 at a depth of 15.0 km.[31] A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Solomon Islands on April 10 at a depth of 35.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VI (Strong).[32] A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck off the west coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia on April 11 at a depth of 33.0 km. In spite of the relatively moderate magnitude in total 71 people were killed. 58 died in the earthquake and 13 more in the tsunami which followed. 100 people were injured. Major damage was caused.[33][34] A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck northern Sumatra, Indonesia on April 12 at a depth of 50.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VI (Strong).[35] 14 people were killed and major damage was caused. 2,000 homes were destroyed.[36]

The shock had a maximum intensity of VII (Very strong).[37] 9 people were killed and around $5 million (1967 rate) property damage was caused.[38] A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Tarapaca Region, Chile on May 11 at a depth of 109.4 km.[39] A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southern Sumatra, Indonesia on May 21 at a depth of 179.3 km.[40]

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck south of Alaska on July 1 at a depth of 27.5 km.[43] A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Fox Islands (Alaska) on July 6 at a depth of 27.3 km.[44] A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Mascara Province, Algeria on July 13 at an unknown depth.10 people were killed and 15 were injured. 40 homes were destroyed.[45] A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck West Papua (province), Indonesia on July 16 at a depth of 30.0 km.[46] A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Palau on July 20 at a depth of 20.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of V (Moderate).[47] A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Sakarya Province, Turkey on July 22 at a depth of 30.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe).[48] 86 people were killed and property damage was $3 million (1967 rate).[49] A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck Erzincan Province, Turkey on July 26 at a depth of 20.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VI (Strong).[50] 97 people were killed and major damage was caused.[51] A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Santander Department, Colombia on July 29 at a depth of 161.2 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of IV (Light).[52] 20 people were killed and major damage was caused.[53] A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck offshore Vargas (state), Venezuela on July 30 at a depth of 25.0 km. The shock had a maximum intensity of VIII (Severe).[54] 300 people were killed and 1,536 were injured. Catastrophic damage was caused with costs reaching at least $140 million (1967 rate).[55]

Many homes were destroyed. This was an unusually destructive event for France.[59] A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck off the east coast of New Britain, Papua New Guinea on August 13 at a depth of 20.0 km.[60] Heavy damage was caused.[61] A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Mindanao, Philippines on August 19 at a depth of 35.0 km.[62] A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia on August 21 at a depth of 39.1 km.[63] A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck Sichuan Province, China on August 30 at a depth of 10.0 km.
