Jahedpur

Jahidpur is a village in Dolarbazar Union in the south-eastern part of Chhatak Upazila in the Sunamganj District of the Sylhet Division in Bangladesh.[1]

Geography

Jahidpur is situated on the southern bank of Makunda River. This river is ended at the western border of the village and submitted its water to the open low land (haor) at the south-west. The village Jahidpur is 2 km in length from east to west. There is a road on the northern bank of river Makunda from east to west of the village.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Bangladesh census, Jahidpur had 1,548 households and a population of 9,881. The literacy rate (age 7 and over) was 51.4%, compared to the national average of 51.8%.[2][3]

Economy

Jahidpur is a resourceful village. Agriculture is the main and traditional source. Most of the villagers work in agriculture.[2] A huge number of people are living in UK who actually strengthened the economic situation largely. Small number also living in Middle East Countries, USA and Australia. Dozens of family living in Sylhet City to enjoy urban facilities. The major crop in the village is paddy.[4]

Infrastructure

Since the village is 22 km away from Chhatak upazila headquarter. its communication was not good in the past days, but nowadays it is mostly improved and is being developing gradually.

All the following institutes, establishments and offices are situated on the northern bank of Makunda River. There is a Revenue office, a post office, two bazaars, three mosques, and one Eidgah. Once, Jahidpur post office used to serve its official transactions to 30 surrounding villages. Its post code number is 3087. At Jahidpur bazar, there was a public library named 'Adarsha Gono Pathagar' (Ideal public library) established in 1984. It was the first-ever public library in the rural territory of Chhatak upazila.

Jahidpur police inspection centre, under Chhatak Thana, ceremonially established on 29 September 2018.

Revenue office

A revenue collection office named 'Jahidpur Tahshil office' was established in this village. But for the poor communicative infrastructure and to make it easier to collect revenues from surrounding villages it was moved to Radhanagar near to Gobindaganj. Now it is officially known as 'Union Land Office Jahidpur'. Actually this office is being used for collection of land revenue of Dolarbazar Union and Chhaila-Afzalabad Union. A Union Land Assistant Officer, Two Union Land Sub-Assistant Officers and Three Peons are serving in this office.

Education

There is one primary school (Jahidpur Government Primary School) established in 1900;[5] one secondary school (Jahidpur High School) and one dakhil (secondary) madrasa, Muhammadia Hafizia Dakhil Madrasa.[6]
