History

Guinea-Bissau entered their first FIFA World Cup qualification with the aim of reaching the 1998 World Cup in France. The first round of African qualification required for them to play Guinea in a two-legged match. The first leg was held at home in the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on 1 June 1996 with an attendance of 15,000. Guinea-Bissau went 2–0 up at half-time after strikes from Tavares Pereira in 11th and 36th minutes. Guinea's Titi Camara equalised with his own brace in the 53rd and 54th minutes. Guinea-Bissau's Co Cipriano won the game with a 60th-minute penalty to make it 3–2.[2]

The away leg was held at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry. Momo Soumah of Guinea scored to equalise the aggregate at half-time before John Varden scored a bicycle kick for Guinea-Bissau to put his side 4–3 up. However, another goal from number 7 equalised the aggregate and Tibou Bangoura of Guinea won the match with his goal that made it 5–4 on aggregate.[3]

On 4 June 2016, Guinea-Bissau defeated Zambia 3–2 to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, which was by far their greatest achievement to date. Guinea-Bissau then also won their Group in the 2019 qualifiers to reach a second straight Finals.

In September 2019, Guinea-Bissau had back-to-back victories over São Tomé and Príncipe which ended their World Cup qualifiers winning drought since the 1996 home win against Guinea.[4]

gollark: And I don't mean "meddling government bad", I mean "if the government seems like it might subsidize home buyers soon, you might want to hold off on buying a house", or "if taxes on property seem like they might increase, you might want to not buy a house".
gollark: What? No.
gollark: And future government policy, since they tend to meddle lots with this stuff. This is quite hard.
gollark: Also your future predictions of those things.
gollark: I guess the price of homes, interest rates, and what rent is like wherever you are/want to live.
