This Act replaced the Government of Ireland Act 1920, which defined the constituencies used for the 2nd Dáil (1921–22) and 3rd Dáil (1922–23). It was itself replaced by the Electoral (Revision of Constituencies) Act 1935, which created a new pattern of constituencies for the 9th Dáil (elected in 1937).

It also increased the number of seats in the Dáil by 25 from 128 to 153.
