Doyoung (singer)

Kim Dong-young (born February 1, 1996), professionally known as Doyoung, is a South Korean singer. He is a member of South Korean boy group NCT and its sub-units NCT U and NCT 127. Doyoung made his debut in April 2016 as a member of the rotational unit NCT U and became a member of the fixed unit NCT 127 in January 2017.

Career

1996–2013: Early life and career beginning

Kim Dong-young was born in Guri, Gyeonggi, South Korea on February 1, 1996. He went to the Topyeong Elementary School then Guri Middle School and Topyeong High School, because of his good memorizing power and attention during class he was appreciated by his teachers. He developed his interest in Music in grade 5 and wanted to learn Flute, with the help of his older brother Gong Myung (5urprise)[1][2][3], he took the proper training. Dong-young later joined the school's cultural group and played the flute at various cultural events after mastering the instrument. He won the first place at the Gyeonggi Youth Arts Festival in 2013.

2013–2015: SM Rookie and Show Champion

In 2013, Doyoung joined SM Entertainment after passing the SM casting system. He was introduced as a part SM's pre-debut training team of SM Rookies in January 2015 and was MC on Show Champion alongside with another SM Rookies Jaehyun and left the program in July of the same year as they were replaced by Comedian Kim Shin-young. His training period was 2 years and 5 months.

2016–2017: First & second debut and soundtracks

In March 2016 he came out featuring on the front page of the Thai Magazine Seventeen alongside Johnny, Lee Tae-yong, Ten and Jaehyun as "Summer's Hottest Guys". He debuted as a member of the NCT subunit "NCT U" in April 2016 with the release of the single "The 7th Sense". During this period he starred in the First Season of the NCT Life reality show, entitled NCT Life in Bangkok[4][5][6], originally aired from April 16 to May 2, 2016, along with fellow members Taeil, Hansol, Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Ten, Jaehyun, Mark, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Jisung. The season focused on the SM Rookies and their journey to debut and soon after, he starred in the Second Season of the NCT Life in Seoul[6], which aired from May 21 to June 11 of that year featuring Taeyong, Yuta, Kun, Jaehyun, Winwin. From June to September, he was M Countdown's special MC, along with other NCT members. Meanwhile, in July 2016, he collaborated with Key on the song "Cool", for the soundtrack of the drama 38 Revenue Collection Unit. From October to November, he appeared in the Fourth Season of NCT Life: Korean Food King Challenge[7][8] along with Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Ten, Jaehyun, Winwin. The Season was a collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to spread Korean culture. In November of the same year, he joined the cast of the Lipstick Prince[9][10][11] program as a cast. In early December 2016, he collaborated with his labelmate Joy of Red Velvet on the song "First Christmas"[12], for Inkigayo Music Crush. Also in December, he was introduced as a member of the NCT 127 subunit. On December 30, 2016, he released the song "Sound of Your Heart" (너의 목소리)[13] for the Station project, as a part of SM Town.

His official debut as a member of NCT 127 took place in January 2017, with the release of EP Limitless. The album debuted at the Top 10 of the Billboard World Albums and Gaon Album Chart. In February 2017, he became Inkigayo's MC , along with Park Jin-young and Kim Ji-soo. In March of the same year, he made an appearance on the MBC program We Got Married as an entertainer (Ep.363). From March to April 2017, he starred in NCT Life again, appearing in its Sixth Season, entitled NCT Life in Chiangmai[14][15] along with Johnny, Taeyong, Ten, Jaehyun and from June to July of that year, he also appeared in the Seventh Season of the NCT Life in Osaka. On August 7, 2017, he released the song "Stay in my Life"[16] for the School 2017 soundtrack, along with Taeil and Taeyong. On October 13, 2017, he released the song "Star Blossom" (별빛 이 피면), through the 2nd Season of the project Station, in collaboration with Kim Se-jeong.

2018–2019: His first concert tour with NCT, UNICEF

In January 2018, he released the soundtrack for the drama of the same name "Radio Romance", in collaboration with Taeil. The mid-tempo rock song was written by Park Geun-chul, Runy and Jung Soo-min, and reflects the drama's purpose of using radio as a means to bring a more analog feeling to a digital world. The following month he left the command of Inkigayo, where he presented for a year. In June of the same year, he released the soundtrack for the drama Rich Man "Hard for me". "Hard for Me" was originally sung by CHEEZE and was the first song released for the drama, which was later re-recorded by Doyoung. On March 14, NCT released its first full-length album, NCT 2018 Empathy. The album featured six singles, showcasing all current units of NCT : "Boss", "Baby Don't Stop", "Yesterday" (All NCT U), "Go" (NCT Dream), "Touch" (NCT 127), and "Black on Black" (NCT 2018). Again in 2018, in the July issue of the South Korean magazine Arena Homme+, he featured the front page alongside Johnny and Jaehyun. On September 06, on the Youtube channel of the SM TOWN his Bazzi's "Mine" was released. In mid-September 2018, SM Entertainment announced that NCT 127 would release its first studio album, entitled Regular-Irregular . The album's release was led by a performance of the English version of the single "Regular" and "Cherry Bomb" on Jimmy Kimmel Live! which also marked the group's first appearance on American television. The album debuted at Number One on the Gaon Album Chart, addition to debut at Number 86 on the Billboard 200, marking the group's first appearance on the US album chart with 8,000+ copies sold in the country in its First Week of sales. On 22 & 23 March, on the Youtube channel of the NCT MUSIC his Ariana Grande's "Breathin" and Bing Crosby's "White Christmas"appeared.

In January 2019, he co-starred in the Star Road: NCT 127 program, alongside other members of NCT 127. On March 6, 2019, he released the song "Don't say goodbye" (헤어 지지 말아요, 우리)[17] in collaboration with the indie duo Rocoberry. On January 26, 2019, NCT 127 embarked on their first concert tour, Neo City – The Origin, with tour dates in Korea, Japan, North America, and Europe. During the tour, they released the single, "Wakey-Wakey" on March 18 which would later be included on their first Japanese full studio album, Awaken, released on April 17. On 25 March, on the Youtube channel of the NCT MUSIC his IU's "Dear Name" cover was uploaded and on May 4, his covered video of Billie Eilish's "'Wish you were gay' with 'Bad Guy'" also appeared. Their fourth EP, We Are Superhuman, was released on May 24 with the title track, "Superhuman." On June 25, his covered video of Billie Eilish's "idontwannabeyouanymore" was released on NCT MUSIC YouTube channel . In between June and July of the same year, he appeared on the "King of Mask Singer" under the name "Assistant Manager" competing in Episodes 209 and 210, respectively, where he won all Three Rounds but was defeated by Nightingale (Lee Bo-ram), causing Doyoung to reveal his identity. After his revelation, Doyoung said that he wanted to appear on the show after seeing Luna performance. He also commented: "I feel a sense of pride as an Idol Vocalist. I think I was able to take the first steps towards achieving my goals, making it all the way here, being an idol vocalist." On July 31, his covered video of Taeyeon's "Rain" appeared on the NCT MUSIC YouTube channel.

NCT 127 's first Japanese studio album, Awaken, was released on April 17, 2019. In between June-July, he starred in the NCT 127 variety show Teach Me JAPAN!. In August he was cast on the SBS reality show Law of the Jungle[18][19]. Still, in August 2019, he released the song "New Love", along with Jaehyun, for the Soundtrack to the Web Drama When You're on the Blacklist of Bullies. During the month of September 2019, he appeared on the NCT 127 American School 101 program. In October of the same year, he collaborated on the soundtrack for the drama The Tale of Nokdu, together with Mark and released the song "Baby Only You"[20]. On October 27, the cover video of Indonesian song "Cinta Luar Biasa" by Andmesh Kamaleng appeared on the NCT MUSIC YouTube channel sung by his NCT 127 mate Haechan and himself. The following month, Doyoung collaborated with BoA, Siwon, J-Min, Sunny, Taemin, Suho and Wendy as part of SM Town on the song "This is Your Day (for every child, UNICEF)"[21]. The song was officially released on November 20, as the First track of the STATION X 4 LOVEs for Winter (2019 SMTOWN Winter) project. "This is Your Day" is a pop ballad track with dynamic chord progressions. The lyrics was written by Yoo Young-jin which expressed his hopes that all children will be happy. On December 24, he covered Taeyeon's "This Christmas",video appeared on the NCT MUSIC YouTube channel.

2020–present: Other activites

In December 2019, he joined the NCT Life in Chuncheon & Hongcheon[22] cast, originally aired from December 9, 2019, to January 17, 2020, alongside Taeil, Yuta, Ten and Jaehyun. On January 27, NCT 127 released a music video for a gift song titled "Dreams Come True" onto the group's official Youtube channel, followed by the release of their second studio album Neo Zone on March 6, with the title track "Kick It", is their third release. In April, NCT 127 was chosen as the ambassador for Korean cosmetics brand Nature Republic.[23]. On 18 April, on the Youtube channel of the NCT MUSIC he covered "Give You My Heart" OST of "Crash Landing on You" originally sung by IU. On May 19, the group released Neo Zone: The Final Round, which served as the repackage of Neo Zone. The album was released alongside its lead single "Punch," which the group premiered live during their Beyond Live concert two days prior.[24]
