Background and Identification

Nikon Corporation, known just as Nikon, is a Japanese company specializing in optics and imaging products. Nikon produces camera, camera lenses, microscopes, binoculars, measurement instruments, spotting scopes, and rifle scopes.

A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called DSLR or digital SLR) is a digital camera that includes the optics and mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor. DSLR cameras generally use interchangeable lenses with an unshared lens mount. A movable mechanical mirror system is adjusted to direct light from the lens over a focusing screen using a condenser lens and a pentaprism or pentamirror to an optical viewfinder eyepiece.

Nikon DSLR cameras include high-end or professional models, prosumer (intended pro-consumers who do not need the same heavy-duty quality of the professional line) models, midrange models, upper-entry-level cameras, and entry-level cameras. The Nikon D1, Nikon’s first professional digital SLR camera, was released in 1999. The D1 was similar to Nikon’s 35 mm film SLR cameras and included the same Nikon lens mount that allowed D1 consumers to use Nikon’s line of existing AI/AIS manual focus and AF lenses.

Nikon cameras can be identified by the name “Nikon” generally printed in white font directly above the camera’s lens assembly. Nikon DSLR models all include a letter ‘D’ at the beginning of their model name or number.
