Source A poe usually appears as a floating shadow in the approximate shape of a humanoid, wearing tattered scraps of clothes. One typically lacking legs, but is capable of effortless magical flight. A poe always wields a metallic lantern of unknown origin, which is known by some to contain the poe's soul—or what little remains of it. A typical poe is never seen without this lantern, and can wield it both as a blunt club and a deflecting shield. For reasons unknown, poes are rarely found in daylight, and seem to avoid sunlight at all costs. Personified Ire. A poe is a spiritual manifestation of the hatred, regret, or ill-will kept in the soul of a creature that has passed, which usually forms either where the creature died or where its corpse was buried. Although few poes can fully recall who or once they once were, their attachment to the source of their ire is often overwhelming. A poe usually can only retain memories of its former self if these memories relate to this ire. Indeed, a poe will usually seek to resolve or destroy this matter if it can recall sufficient details, and can haunt those who still live in doing so. Those with insufficient memories to do so usually remain near wherever they were created, confused and full of hate, and seeking to lash out at whatever creatures would dare disturb them. Valuable Souls. A poe carries either in its lamp or inside its body a gaseous orb or wisp that is generally referred to as a poe soul. Whether it is literally a soul or not, a poe ceases to be once it is removed. These souls are treasured by unusual collectors, and occasionally can be harvested and sold for a significant price. Undead Nature. A poe does not require air, food, drink, or sleep. |
Variant: Big PoeRarely, Poes can be found that are of exceptional size, and usually seem to found most often in wide open fields. It is believed these giant souls are the remnants of unusually large humanoids or monstrosities—perhaps including lynels, who are known to almost exclusively inhabit fields. A big poe is of Medium size, and has 8 more Hit Dice, which increases its hit points to 72. It lacks the Sunlight Weakness feature. A big poe has a Challenge Rating of 2 (450 XP). |

Variant: HyuClosely related to poes, a hyu forms and flies in a similar way, and even carries a lantern for the same reason as a poe. Although it is created through unspent negative emotions, it lacks the utter disdain that defines poes. A hyu's body is usually of a lighter shade, and tends to be less outwardly malicious than a typical poe. One can be any chaotic alignment. A hyu lacks the Innate Spellcasting feature and the Lantern Charge action. A hyu has a Challenge Rating of 1/2 (100 XP). |
