Onihime VS (also known as Phantom Princesses VS in S. Korea) is a Manga published in Comic Valkyrie by Dal-Young Lim (author) and Soo-Hyon Lee (artist).
Setsuna's only desire is for his sister to live a happy life. Weak, frail, and constantly bullied, Setsuna believes he's nothing but a burden to his sister and decides to take his own life. As he prepares to jump off a bridge, a mysterious man appears and presents him with an unusual offer. He offers to purchase Setsuna's life in one year after which Setsuna will die in a manner the man chooses. In exchange, he will give Setsuna's sister 10 million yen at the completion of the contract. Skeptical at first, Setsuna accepts. The next morning, thinking It Was All Just a Dream, Setsuna awakens to find two beautiful women sitting beside him. They are Kanna and Rena, Oni princesses who have come to protect Setsuna. The middleman just happened to forget to tell him what the catch is; one of them gets to eat his heart in one year.
The official site (in Japanese) is found HERE. It also has sample artwork.
- Action Girls
- A-Cup Angst: Hina
- Asshole Victim: The serial rapist that Hina kills to convince that Arima that she is an Oni.
- Attempted Rape: Arima forces herself onto Setsuna in the first chapter. Before that (on the first page), Arima and her cohorts stripped Setsuna outdoors so that Arima could check out his "equipment". Setsuna has such horrible self-esteem that this isn't enough to make him hate her.
- In chapter 15, as a result of the group date her friends dragged her into, Arima gets paired off with a creepy molestor who drugs her drink. Fortunately, Setsuna interrupts while cleaning the hallway outside, distracting the guy long enough for Arima to recover somewhat and drunkenly kick the everloving crap out of him.
- Then there's a Curb Stomped Rena in Chapter 20...
- Authority Equals Asskicking: The Royal Princess of the Oni clan are not only incredibly strong in their human forms, but their connection to the Royal Blood allow them to partially transform into actual demonic-oni and greatly increase their power. It is for this reason the idea of the Zombie clan being considerd as equal authority to the Oni clan is completely false.
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: Arima and Hina may bitch about how they're stuck together, but they ultimately do care very much for each other.
- Barehanded Blade Break: Erionelle does this to Rena before giving her a hefty K.O.
- Beach Episode: This chapter we are at the beach for fanservice?
- Big Damn Heroes: Chapter 15. Setsuna is probably the most low-key example of this ever when he distracts Arima's would-be rapist long enough for Arima to drunkenly beat him down herself.
- Big Eaters: Kanna and Rena. Apparantelly, Erionelle may be one as well.
- Bland-Name Product: Amira was looking for a Mii
- Bodyguard Crush: Setsuna and Kanna blush when looking at each other after the Amnesia arc.
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: The narration has its moments.
- Bridal Carry: Hina does this to the injured Arima in Chapter 20.
- But Not Too Foreign: Erionelle is Romanian, but of Japanese descent.
- Butt Monkey: Hina's life is made miserable by Rena and Kanna just because of their carelessness...
- Call on Me: A plot point; whoever Setsuna calls on the most gets to eat his heart, which is why he can summon both at the same time.
- Call to Adventure
- Clothing Damage: Very prevelant; should be noted that Arima is the first one to suffer from it, hilariously enough.
- Cold-Blooded Torture: The Royal Family is known for this when it comes to other demons who are challenge them... Erionelle learns this the hard way.
- Color-Coded for Your Convenience: Rena has black hair, Kanna has white hair, and Hina has red hair.
- Also, the true forms of the Oni clan are red, while true forms of the Zombie Oni clan are blue.
- Combat Stilettos: Kanna.
- Cool Big Sis: She is somehow ok with Big Eater girls staying at their apartment.
- Curb Stomp Battle: ...almost every fight thus far has been one, but points go to Erionelle who takes out Rena with just a slap.
- Cursed with Awesome: Setsuna's Deal with the Devil is a case of this since he'd probably be dead in less than a year anyway without a heart transplant. In the meantime, he has greater vitality thanks to the banrikou, the constant companionship of two Oni beauties a third Oni appears later on, and a fortune for his sister at the end of it all. On the more "cursed" side of things, one of the Oni princesses will end up eating his heart, and that's if other demons don't get to him first.
- Curtains Match the Window: Arima
- Cute Mute: Rena
- Deadpan Snarker: Princess Rena. Also makes her a Silent Snarker:
Kanna: Rena, you bitch! You spout nonsense even though you don't dare to speak!
- Demonic Possession: Many lesser youkai that want to eat Setsuna's heart have this annoying tendency to possess hapless people.
- Disney Death: Kanna in the final chapter of the Amnesia arc
- Driven to Suicide: Setsuna in the first chapter after yet another bout of abuse from Arima and seeing his sister harassed by Evil Debt Collectors on his account. Then the Middleman interrupts him and offers the Deal with the Devil that kicks off the plot.
- Easy Amnesia/Identity Amnesia: After Kanna drinks a love potion not designed for use on females, she suffers amnesia as a side effect, even forgetting that she's an oni. Additionally, her personality becomes sweet and gentle, the exact opposite of her usual self.
- Emotionless Girl: Both Rena and Erionelle normally; points to the later since her eybrows are hidden.
- Every Girl Is Cuter With Hair Decs: Suprisingly, Erionelle is the only character to exhibit this trope.
- Everything's Better with Princesses
- Expy: Kanna and Rena can easily be seen as these for Panty and Stocking respectively, albeit more realistic and toned down (Erionelle can be seen as a bigger Expy of Stocking then Rena is).
- Fan Service: Lampshaded constantly.
- Foregone Conclusion
- Freudian Trio/The Three Faces of Eve: The three princesses: Hot Amazon Kanna is The McCoy, Only Sane Man Hina is The Kirk and The Speechless Rena is The Spock. As the faces of Eve, Kanna is the Seductress (look at her) and while they could switch and it would work just as well, Hina is the Mother (because she seems to lack the behavioral Weirdness Censor everyone else has) and Rena is the Maiden (has her own thoughts but seems nicer compared to the other two and much more easy-going.)
- Gag Penis: According to the local Rich Bitch, Setsuna is unexpectedly "mighty."
- Hair Antennae: Kanna sports a large one that swoops backwards; thankfully, it doesn't count as Idiot Hair.
- Harem Nanny: Hina, so far.
- Harem Series
- Herald: The Middleman
- Hidden Buxom: Rena.
- Hoist By Her Own Petard: Hina, who ends up falling into the trap she set up for Kanna and Rena.
- Hopeless Suitor: Arima. She brings it on herself since her earlier abuse makes it impossible for Setsuna to see her as anything but somebody to be feared and obeyed, not loved.
- Hot Chick With Two Swords: Rena.
- Hot Springs Episode
- Hot Teacher: Kanna's day job.
- Ill Boy: Setsuna. He has a heart condition that will kill him eventually without a heart transplant.
- Ironically, drinking the banrikou seems to have cured him, or at least alleviated his symptoms.
- But it also made his heart super tasty to oni. Poor kid can't catch a break, can he?
- Ironically, drinking the banrikou seems to have cured him, or at least alleviated his symptoms.
- Interrupted Suicide
- Kids Are Cruel: When Kana loses her memories she gets picked on by three young boys who dub her titty alien or monster. Setsuns tries to help her with less than stellar results. It takes Arima showing up to drive them off.
- Arima calls out Setsuna on being unable to handle three little kids and he says that he Wouldn't Hurt a Child.
- Kiss of Life: Setsuna gives one to Arima after Hina's spell blows up on them.
- Last-Name Basis: Arima prefers this when she's being spoken to.
- Love Confession: In the first chapter Arima confesses to Setsuna in the most messed up way possible. It turned out so badly that it's probably a good thing that a Demonic Possession got in the way.
- Love Potion: In chapter 7, Arima attempts to use one on Setsuna. Kanna drinks it instead, making things more complicated than one might expect.
- Magnetic Girlfriend: So strong, even Arima who bullied him before the princesses appeared (and not in the comedic sense back then) starts coming after him. See the Tsundere-entry below.
- To be fair, she liked him before... she's just the type not to show it except by being a complete bitch to him, and the princesses showing up made her see that her current strategy was not working.
- Major Injury Underreaction: Arima doesn't seem that fazed after getting blasted in the chest with a lazer in Chapter 19.
- Male Gaze: A lot. Especially with Rena.
- Meaningful Name: The (fake) surnames of Kanna and Rena, which are Shirayuki and Kuroyuki respectively. "Shira" means "white" and "Kuro" means "black".
- Meido: Princess Rena at her part time job at a Maid Cafe.
- And Hina after Arima becomes her master because God hates Hina.
- Named Weapons: Kanna's "Golden Staff" and Rena's "Life Spirit" and "Death Spirit"
- New Transfer Student: Erionelle's Paper-Thin Disguise.
- Older Than They Look: The princesses, but Hina in particular.
- Only Sane Woman: Hina, who's only real interest in Setsuna is his heart.
- Only Sane Employee: To Arima.
- Operation: Jealousy: Arima tries this in chapter 14. Like all of her attempts to win Setsuna's interest, it fails miserably.
- Ordinary High School Student
- Otaku
- Panty Shot
- Paper-Thin Disguise: Kanna saw through the Zombie Princess' disguise right away but didn't say anything because she doesn't see her as much of a threat.
- Parental Abandonment
- Setsuna's parents are dead prior to the beginning of the manga. It just increases the woobiness of Setsuna's already crappy life.
- Arima suffers from this as well, though her parents are still alive they don't spend much time with her.
- Pet the Dog: Hina saving a little girl who's mother has been possessed by a demon. The little girl was not getting fed anymore by the time Hina intervened.
- Playing to The Fetishes: There's a lolita, a maid, a schoolgirl, an older sister, and a teacher. Lampshaded the first time Hina appears the text says the manga is trying to hard.
- Please Spare Him, My Liege: Setsuna begs Kanna to spare Erionelle after Kanna beats her easily and is about to torture her for challenging a royal princess of the Oni clan by saying he felt Kanna was a Good Oni and didn't need to go to such extremes. It works.
- The Power of Blood: ....what kept Hina alive after getting Hoist By Her Own Petard.
- Pretty Freeloaders: This is subverted when the princesses realize they eat more then the family can afford and take jobs to help pay for the food.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Kanna and Rena. Bonus points for actually being Onis.
- Taken literally with not only the skin color of the Oni and Zombie Oni clans' true forms, but Kanna and Rena's eye color!
- Rich Bitch: Arima and she has some unusual character traits.
- Rousseau Was Right: Setsuna certainly sees the good in many people, including Kanna, Rena, and Erionelle, despite the formers acknowledging they plan on eating his heart and the later aiming to kill him to get to the Oni Princesses.
- Royal Blood: The Oni royal family has a special one that allows them to tap into a deep power and transform if things get too rough.
- School Swimsuit: Hina wears one for no reason during the Beach Episode.
- Self-Made Orphan: Arima lives alone because she and her parents cannot stand each other.
- She's Got Legs: Kanna, even as a kid. You can tell by the way she sits.
- Shout-Out: Erionelle's hair clip is basically a smaller version of Elsie's.
- The Smart Guy: Hina.
- Smoking Is Cool: Hina, it's also a part of her magic.
- The Speechless: Princess Rena.
- Spit Take: Setsuna when Arima asks him if he has a girl friend.
- Talking with Signs: Rena just communicates by writing on her notebook.
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo: Rena. If she weren't so impulsive, Arima would also qualify.
- Thanks for the Mammary: Kana to Setsuna in the first chapter.
- Those Two Girls: Midorizawa and Satou, Arima's Girl Posse.
- Those Two Girls: Arima's friends: Satou and Midorizawa.
- Token Mini-Moe: Hina, although she's really of legal age. She is just very....underdeveloped.
- Tsundere AND Yandere: Arima. Alternatively stripping Setsuna, ordering him around, outright jumping him and refusing to admit to doing anything nice for him. It's kinda creepy.
- Versus Title
- Waterfall Puke: Happens to Arima in chapter 15.
- Weirdness Magnet: Setsuna just because he has a heart that demons want to eat.
- White Gloves: Erionelle wears these.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl: Kanna
- You Gotta Have Green Hair: Arima
- Youkai: The princesses themselves.
- Your Days Are Numbered: Despite the Unwanted Harem, Setsuna is reminded often of THIS and his bad heart condition would kill him before age 20 so this was in play BEFORE the deal, thus this story would have either a Downer Ending at worst or a Bittersweet Ending at best, making it an In-Universe Harsher in Hindsight.
- Zettai Ryouiki: ...hell, pretty much every girl in the series sans Setsuna's Cool Big Sis. Erionelle takes the cake.
