Lunar: The Silver Star/Characters
Characters from the first games of Game Arts' flagship RPG series, Lunar, including Lunar: The Silver Star, Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, Lunar Legend and Lunar: Silver Star Harmony.
Alex Noah
The main protagonist of Lunar: The Silver Star. An ambitious young boy from the village of Burg on Caldor Island, who dreams of becoming a hero just like his idol Dragonmaster Dyne.
- Akira Ishida: In Silver Star Story and Silver Star Harmony.
- Ascended Fanboy: He is a fan of the late Dragonmaster Dyne and dreams of being a famous hero. His fanboy-ness is particularly pronounced in the novels, where he rattles off lists of Dyne's expoits.
- Genre Blindness
- God Was My Co-Pilot: Pulled twice namely, Luna is the Goddess Athena('s reincarnation) and Nall is the new White Dragon.
- Green Eyes: Alex's eye color links him to a vague, occasionally mentioned prophecy in the Sega CD version.
- The Hero: Noble and pure of heart.
- Heroes Prefer Swords
- Hero Worshipper: For his idol Dragonmaster Dyne.
- Jumped At the Call: Because what else is a brave young aspiring adventurer going to do?
- Kid Hero
- Kill It with Fire: Has access to mostly fire magic in the original till he gets his Dragon Spells.
- Marriage to a God: Technically, post-game.
- Nice Job Breaking It, Hero
- Nice Hat: But not nice enough apparently because the remakes removed it. At least he gets a better one later in the form of the Blue Dragon Helmet.
- Psychic Dreams for Everyone: He dreams of Luna after she is kidnapped.
- Shrinking Violet
- Silent Bob: He barely spoke in the first game and only spoke at important moments in the remake.
Luna Noah
Alex's childhood friend, who has lived in Burg with him for as long as she can remember. She is well known for her extraordinary singing voice.
- Ascended Extra: In the Sega CD game, Luna leaves the party before the trip to Meribia, returns home, and doesn't have a role until she gets kidnapped and turned into evil Althena. In Silver Star Story and the other remakes, she stays in the party for longer but the outcome is much the same.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Happens to her in the middle of the game by the Magic Emperor.
- Brown Note: Two of her songs in the Sega CD version, Supersonic and Destruction, are attack spells. Outside of gameplay, the remakes have her sing songs that brainwash the Four Dragons when she becomes Althena.
- Evil Costume Switch/Go-Go Enslavement/Evil Is Sexy/Stripperiffic: Her costume switch after being kidnapped and brainwashed by the Magic Emperor falls under all of these. Eternal Blue references it in haiku: "Heavenly bodies/Eyes gaze upwards in rev'rence/Goddess in a thong".
- Hair Decorations: Her scarf.
- I Am Who?
- Leitmotif: Luna's LaLa Song. Normally sung by herself, though it's also played by Alex on the ocarina both in-game and in the BGM. It's the song you're going to hear peppered throughout the game the most, besides the theme for the game itself.
- It's such an iconic song that it even returns in several songs in the sequel, even though Luna is only present in the game in the form of a message she left behind.
- Magic Music: Her songs have magical effects.
- Mysterious Waif
- Nice Hat: She gets some awesome headgear when she awakens as the Goddess.
- Pretty in Mink: The white fur trim on the hem of her skirt isn't quite this, given she grew up in a village where it's the norm instead of a luxury. What does fit this is the fancy silver fur cape she drapes over her shoulders on the back of the original Sega CD game case.
- Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Averted. Luna can be coy with her feelings, but she's generally more grumpy and willful than shy.
- Stripperiffic: When in Goddess form. A stark contrast to her human form, which is never seen in anything but modest clothing, even in bromides.
- Team Mom: In the remakes, constantly reminding the team to mind their manners and be on their best behavior.
- Victorious Childhood Friend
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She is one of the only characters in the first game who doesn't have a "normal" hair color.
Nall
A
feathered marshmallowbaby white dragon that hangs around Alex.
- Angel Unaware
- Berserk Button: Calling him a cat.
- Captain Obvious
- Cute Little Fangs
- I Am Not Weasel: See Berserk Button above.
- Image Song: Les Miserables.
- Our Dragons Are Different
- Snarky Non-Human Sidekick: Most conversations with NPCs end with Nall making an offhand joke about the situation.
- Team Pet
- Trademark Favorite Food: Fish.
Ramus
Another of Alex's childhood friends, though he's not quite as big on adventure as he is with dreams of making money. This doesn't sit well with his father, who is the village elder and hates the fact that Ramus always has his head in the clouds and never goes out and actually does anything.
- Adam Smith Hates Your Guts: Played straight until the very end right before the final battle, when Ramus finally lets you take what you want from his store for free.
- Big Fun: A portly lad who knows a thing or two about how to enjoy himself.
- Call to Adventure: He's the caller for Alex.
- Identical Grandson: His descendant, who appears one thousand years later in Eternal Blue. He's completely identical to Ramus the First, down to the name and clothes.
- Miser Advisor
- Muggles: Ramus is the only playable character in the game who can't use magic, and he gives this as the reason why he stays behind in Meribia when Alex and friends travel to the magic city of Vane.
- Wealthy Ever After: Becomes one of the richest merchants in Meribia after gaining his store.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: He canonically has brown hair, but for some reason (likely color limitations on the Sega CD and nostalgia on the PSX), he has blue hair in his overworld sprites.
Nash Rumack
A student at the Vane magic academy. He believes himself to be one of the best, but his cocky attitude turns off his peers quite often. He is attracted to Mia, daughter of the guildmaster.
- Anime Hair: That silly oversized cowlick he sports.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Subverted by the fact that, according to Japanese materials, he's 17 and by extension the second-oldest in the party (Kyle has him beat at 18; Alex, Luna and Nall are 15, and Mia and Jessica are 16)!
- Face Heel Turn: He does one just before the group leaves for the Frontier. The rest of the group is less than pleased.
- Heel Face Turn: Does this after getting slapped by Mia and pounded into the ground by everyone else.
- Image Song: Magical Weapon Nash.
- The Lancer
- Leitmotif: Modern Boy.
- During his brief switching of sides, he also gets Magical Weapon Nash.
- Love Makes You Evil: He says that he did aforementioned Face Heel Turn in order to protect Mia.
- Reverse Mole: Late in the game, Xenobia turns Nash against the party. He claims to have done so out of his love for Mia.
- Shock and Awe: Nash's talent lies in his command of thunder-based magic.
- Small Name, Big Ego: He thinks highly of himself, and to a degree looks down on people that can't use magic. The fact he's not as good as he thinks he is even reflected in gameplay where, in both versions, he's widely regarded as the least useful of your major party members due his useless status effect spells and being the least reliable source of damage since he only uses thunder magic, so he's pretty useless against anything resistant to it.
- Squishy Wizard: He is not useful in melee combat, and is best situated near the back of party formations.
- Standard Status Effects: Some of his spells inflict paralysis.
- Useless Useful Spell: Has a bunch of status effect spells. Too bad they're useless as you can kill the enemies faster with attacks.
- Welcome Back, Traitor: After Nash defects to the Vile Tribe, the pay is willing let him back in, no questions asked, when he sees the error of his ways.
Mia Ausa
The shy daughter of Lemia Ausa. Nash has his eyes on her, but she doesn't tend to think of him as a love interest.
- An Ice Person and Playing with Fire: Yes. She is both.
- Armor-Piercing Slap: Delivers one to Nash.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Let's just say Mia can get scarier than Jessica if Mia gets pressed enough.
- Hair Decorations: Her hair ribbon.
- Image Song: Fairy Rain.
- Leitmotif: Fairy Rain.
- Nightmare Fetishist: Let her mold the clay in Damon's Spire. You'll learn she finds the game's monsters to be adorable. Nash is left utterly dumbfounded.
- Shower Scene: One of her bromides.
- Shrinking Violet: Her upbringing in the magic city of Vane was very sheltered, making her awkward around people she doesn't know.
- The Smart Guy: Very knowledgeable on matters academic.
- Squishy Wizard
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: With Jessica. Again, guess which one she is.
Jessica de Alkirk
A priestess-in-training at the Shrine of Althena, but a bit more hot-headed than most. She and Kyle are in a Slap Slap Kiss relationship of sorts.
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: With Kyle.
- Beta Couple: She and Kyle.
- Combat Medic: Don't let the White-Mage robes fool you: she packs a mean punch. She has higher melee damage, speed, and defense than the other spell casters in the party and up to four attacks, assuming you level her up to level 99.
- Cute Little Fangs: These are a sign of her half-beastperson heritage.
- Epic Flail: Often wields clubs and flails.
- Facial Markings
- Genki Girl: She is cheery and outgoing, but temperamental.
- Half-Human Hybrid: The other half being the series' Demihuman race, the Beastmen.
- Image Song: Pretty Girl.
- In the Hood: Averted. She's wearing a hood, but it's part of her White Mage look.
- Leitmotif: Pretty Girl.
- Lethal Chef
- Pimped-Out Cape
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: With Mia. Guess which one she is.
- Tsundere: Towards Kyle.
Kyle
The leader of a gang of bandits that "protect" the Katarina-Marius border. Like his girlfriend Jessica, he's a bit of a hot-head.
- Ambiguously Brown: Maybe a tan?
- Aw, Look -- They Really Do Love Each Other: With Jessica.
- The Big Guy: Most HP and strongest physical attack in the game.
- Boisterous Bruiser: Loud, boastful, and hits like a truck!
- Hachimaki: The only time we see him without it is when he's Disguised in Drag.
- Handsome Lech
- Image Song: Killy is No. 1!.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Leitmotif: It's Me!.
- Loveable Rogue
- Monster Protection Racket: He and his band of rogues leads one of these.
- Snot Bubble: One appears in his introductory cutscene in the remakes.
The Goddess Althena
The primary deity of Lunar. After the Blue Star was laid to waste by a battle between Althena and Zophar, the goddess gathered what was left of humanity and moved them to the Silver Star, a dead world until it was brought to life by Althena's power. Since then, she has been watching over this new world, which was named Lunar, with the help of her four dragons and her champion, the Dragonmaster.
- Fantastic Nuke: Althena's power is what laid waste to the Blue Star.
- Image Song: Althena's Song - Distant Journey.
- Magic Music
- Physical Goddess
- Who Wants to Live Forever?: Her eventual decision to stop her cycle of reincarnation (and, by extension, her immortality) is based on this.
Quark
The White Dragon of Althena, and the last surviving (and sane) member of the Dragon Tribe (until Ghaleon kills him).
The Four Heroes
A four-person team of warriors who stood against the minions of the Vile Tribe to protect the goddess Althena long ago.
- Leitmotif: Four Heroes
- Precursor Heroes: Celebrated heroes well before the game begins.
Dyne
One of the original Dragonmasters. Little else is known about him, and Alex wants to be just like him. Believed to have been killed.
- Not Quite Dead: Alex later finds out that Dyne is still alive, laying low under the assumed name "Laike".
Master Mel de Alkirk (Hell Mel)
The mayor of the great city of Meribia, and probably one of the physically strongest people in the land. Father of Jessica de Alkirk.
- An Axe to Grind: Mel's trademark weapon is an axe almost as big as he is, and yet he can still wield it one-handed.
- Badass Beard: A very impressive one at that.
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Demihuman: Probably the most beast-like example of Lunar's Beastmen.
- Fangs Are Evil: More intimidating than evil, but they're certainly less cute than his daughter's.
- Large Ham
- Overprotective Dad: Kyle's avoidance of Mel is probably justified due to this.
- Reasonable Authority Figure
- Taken for Granite: Becomes a victim of the Vile Tribe's magic. In Silver Star Story Complete, his stone form becomes a boss battle (as "Plaster Mel").
Lemia Ausa
The chief maiden of the Vane magic guild and mother of Mia Ausa.
- An Ice Person and Playing with Fire: Like mother, like daughter.
- Black Magician Girl
- Brainwashed and Crazy: The real Lemia was captured by Xenobia, brainwashed and spirited away. Then Xenobia took on her likeness in a bid to ake over Vane.
Ghaleon
A powerful magician who once fought alongside Dyne, but now works in the Vane magic guild with Lemia.
- All-Encompassing Mantle: Both on his final boss armor for Silver Star Story, and the armor he wears when he returns in Eternal Blue.
- Crutch Character: All versions, when you get him briefly. He's maxed out, so he has a ton of HP and deal more damage with cane than Alex with his current weapons can at the point in the game you have him, and his magic will pretty much end a fight instantly.
- Guest Star Party Member
- Nice Hat: In his premier regalia. Though, uh, Your Mileage May Vary on whether it's nice or just plain silly.
- Obviously Evil: Toned up in the remakes with a Scare Chord following his introduction.
- One-Winged Angel: In the original, after you defeat the first time and leave him for dead in a pool of his own blood (seriously), he comes back five minutes later and turns into a demon.
- Pet the Dog: He has a garden of pixies, who think he is a genuinely good human. Doesn't it just warm the heart?
- Rokuro Naya: In The Silver Star and both versions of Lunar 2.
- Shoulders of Doom: His final boss outfit.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: In the remake. He believes humanity can't survive without a deity watching over them, and he sees Althena's choosing to give up her powers and become mortal as abandoning the people of Lunar to inevitable ruin. His plan is to either become a god himself, or failing that at least force Althena to resume her role.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: Probably the earliest example when it comes to the West's exposure to this trope.
Laike
A traveler whom Alex and company frequently meet on their journey. He is an extremely skilled swordsman, and saves Alex's bunch once or twice from a couple of sticky situations.
- Badass Beard: The beard emphasizes both his skill and his worldliness. It also provides a good disguise.
- Crutch Character: A rare case of a late game example. He's maxed out, is really powerful and tough despite his equipment being garbage for that point in the game, and can make four moves/attacks in one turn. In the remakes he's just maxed out with no special tricks.
- Eccentric Mentor: He seems mercurial and almost incapable of taking anything seriously, but he does have good advice to offer.
- Guest Star Party Member
- Nice Hat
- Recurring Traveler: As Laike
- Retired Badass: Surprise! He's Dyne. That speaks for itself.
Tempest
The chief of the Prarie Tribe. At first, he doesn't get along very well with Alex for having mercy on a liar. After Alex proves his skill as a warrior, however, he becomes an ally who is willing to offer his assistance whenever the party needs it.
- The Archer: In the remakes.
- Braids, Beads, and Buckskins
- Defeat Means Friendship: Has to be beaten in order to convince him to trust Alex.
- Guest Star Party Member: Tempest only joins Alex for one quest.
- Happily Married: To Fresca.
- Leitmotif: Lone Wolf.
- Whip It Good: Only in the original.
Fresca
Tempest's lover, rarely seen apart from him. The two are already planning on starting a family: Tempest wants a dozen kids, but Fresca would prefer a modest eight or nine...
Myght
A genius inventor who lives as a recluse atop a tower. Laike is one of his closest, or perhaps only, friends.
- Demihuman: He's a Beastman, or at least he's got the ears of one.
- Gadgeteer Genius
- Grumpy Old Man
- Nice Hat
- The Pig Pen: In the English releases, Working Designs wanted to explain his reclusive lifestyle. So, they gave him a bad case of body odor.
Xenobia
A powerful sorceress who leads the Vile Tribe and assists the Magic Emperor. She and her followers were banished to the Frontier for standing against Althena.
- Blondes Are Evil
- The Dragon: To the Magic Emperor.
- Hair Decorations: Even evil girls like their hair ribbons, apparently.
- The Hecate Sisters: Crone.
- Master of Disguise: She poses as Lemia after robbing the guildmistress of her memories. Her ruse is finally exposed once the heroes find "Lemia" in the Crystal Tower and Mia uses the Mirror of Truth on her.
- Stripperiffic
Royce
A remake-only character. A fortune-teller who works out of the Bazaar of the Bizarre in Meribia. She and her "sister" Phacia are actually refugees of the Vile Tribe, working directly under Xenobia.
- Blondes Are Evil
- Feather Boa Constrictor: Seen on her battle sprite and her bromide.
- For the Evulz: She seems to enjoy making others suffer a bit too much.
- Fortune Teller: She poses as one when the heroes first meet her.
- Hair Decorations: Even evil girls like their hair ribbons apparently.
- The Hecate Sisters: Maiden.
- In the Hood: Before unveiling her true identity.
- Stripperiffic: How is that top piece even staying on?
Phacia
Another remake character. She is a priestess at the Shrine of Althena on the Katarina region of the mainland. She, along with her "sister" Royce hold their jobs to disguise their true nature as members of the Vile Tribe.
- Anti-Villain: She sincerely wants to improve the lives of the Vile Tribe, who were banished long time ago to the barren frontier.
- Hair Decorations: Even evil girls like their hair ribbons, apparently.
- The Hecate Sisters: Mother.
- Heel Face Turn: She later betrays her sisters to let the heroes fight against the Magic Emperor.
- Sensible Heroes, Skimpy Villains: Notice how she's the only one of the three sisters who isn't wearing something Stripperiffic. Now, which one do you think ends up doing the Heel Face Turn?
- White-Haired Pretty Girl
Taben
An inventor working for the Magic Emperor. He is working the Vile Tribe to death to finish his masterwork, the Grindery.
- Gadgeteer Genius
- What Happened to the Mouse?: Shows up when the Grindery starts moving and vanishes from the plot without a trace.
Magic Emperor (Ghaleon)
A man clad entirely in black armor who plans to rule Lunar.
- Big Bad: The main antagonist of Lunar.
- Card-Carrying Villain: As the Magic Emperor (at least, in the Sega CD version).
- Evil Laugh: When acting as the "Magic Emperor".
- Genre Savvy
- A God Am I: He did try to become an omnipotent being by hijacking the power of Althena.
- Large Ham
- Leitmotif: Magic Emperor Ghaleon. Careful, you'll see the spoileriffic name if you click the link.
- Tin Tyrant: Despite the fact that he specializes in magic.
