Controversies

The firm was accused and found guilty of stealing software from AMSC and was embroiled in a lawsuit with that firm.[3][4] On 27 June 2013, the United States Department of Justice declared Sinovel and three Individuals were charged with theft of trade secrets.[5] On 24 January 2018 a U.S. federal jury in Madison, Wisconsin found Sinovel guilty of stealing trade secrets from AMSC causing the American company to lose over US$800 million. Prosecutors stated that Sinovel stole trade secrets and copyrighted information with the intention of building its own versions of AMSC systems and retrofit previously built wind turbines so it could avoid having to pay AMSC for its technology.[6] The federal judge ordered Sinovel to pay $59 Million for the act of stealing.[7] According to a press release by AMSC on 03 July 2018, AMSC has settled the lawsuit with Sinovel.

gollark: I'm crusading against closed-source Krist products generally, actually.
gollark: Even assuming no malice at all (or security issues), it could crash/fail and leave money stranded in your wallet.
gollark: Well, <@!111569489971159040>, it's not as if people will immediately notice if they get slightly less money than they might expect.
gollark: So why would releasing it make it *more complex*?
