It was established in 1994.[1] The school provides education to its students in Bengali and English version under the national curriculum. Students are admitted into the institution in sixth, ninth and eleventh grades. The school has around 6000 students and employs more than 200 teaching staff and more than 100 other staff.[2][3]

History

RAJUK Uttara Model College was set up on an area of about 4.5 acres (18,000 m2) at Uttara in 1994 under the control and management of the Ministry of Education. It was the absence of a truly standard educational institution in the area and the demand of the inhabitants that had led to the idea of founding an institution of very high standards in the newly built town. In order to meet the demand, the Ministry of Education established an educational institution in Uttara. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Capital Development Authority) or Rajuk) provided land for the school.

The construction of the main academic building was completed in 1994 and the college section was formally inaugurated in the academic year 1994–95 by the former prime minister of Bangladesh, Khaleda Zia.[4] Due to acute shortage of infrastructural facilities, another development project for the construction of a new building was taken up in 1995 which was completed in two phases and the campus took its present shape in 2001.[5] The new campus of Rajuk Uttara Model College has been built in the same premises. It started its journey from 2014. It is a three-story building.

The school is under the control of an autonomous board of governors headed by the secretary, Ministry of Education.[5] Although the school commenced with only one shift (morning shift), later in 2003 a day shift was launched to cope with the growing number of students. The 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. schedule is morning shift and the 12:35 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. schedule is day shift.

Admission

Admission to RUMC is competitive.[6] Applicants have to pass a written test and an oral test in order to qualify. Admission tests for the sixth grade is generally held in December and academic sessions begin in January. The admission procedure for the eleventh grade starts soon after the publication of the result of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) (public examination taken by students after completing grade 10) examination and admission is based on SSC examination result.[6] Students securing less than GPA 5 on the scale of 5 in the SSC examinations are not even eligible to apply for admission in the science group.

Education

RUMC provides education to its students in the Secondary and Higher Secondary level in both Bengali and English version under the national curriculum. Students take Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary (School) Certificate (HSC) (public examination is taken by students after completing grade 12) examinations and the Junior School Certificate (JSC) ( Public exam for the eighth graders). The school has an air-conditioned library with 15000 volumes along with physics, chemistry, computer, biology, geography labs for holding experiments. Arrangements are made for the bright students to participate in various merit based and sports contests.

Curriculum

This high school follows the national education curriculum of Bangladesh. The curriculum includes junior secondary, secondary and higher secondary school academic subjects. Students of grades 6 and 7 can take music and dance lessons along. Students of secondary (9 and 10) can choose either science or business studies based on their performance in the JSC exam while the students of higher secondary (11 and 12) classes can elect one of the three general streams: science, business studies and humanities on the basis of their grades in the SSC examination.
