American Standard International School of Dhaka

The American Standard International School in Dhaka (ASIS) is an independent co-educational day school located in Gulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh, serving students of all nationalities in pre-school through grade 12. (IB Diploma Programme, US High School Diploma, and O/A Level Cambridge+EdExcel) presently.

At the time of its founding in 2011, ASIS had been housed in a single building located in North Baridhara/Kalachandpur. In January 2015 it relocated to a new campus in North Gulshan on Road 79. ASIS serves a mixed population of international students from many different countries from pre-school through Grade 12. In 2015 it applied and was accepted by the British Council [1] and Cambridge International Exams [2] to offer Ordinary Level and Advanced Level examinations.[3] ASIS is also listed on the U.S. Department of Overseas Schools' website as a School at Post.[4]

Enrollment

The student population in 2011 was 750 which increased to 980 in 2012.[5] According to a new census of 2017, the student population stands at 2,354. A report on this school shows that there are only 350 students are Bangladeshis and the rest are students from different countries including United States of America, China, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, India, United Kingdom, Australia, Spain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey and many others.[6]

Curriculum

American Standard International School offers IB DP (Diploma Programme) + a robust American curriculum based on the State of Ohio's Department of Education guidelines up to Grade 12 & UK's O & A levels through British Council. All instruction is in English, and ASIS and an intense English As A Second Language (ESL) is offered to students whose first language is not English. In the senior section, from Grade 9, students prepare for either Cambridge Ordinary Level exams or enter the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) Diploma program to complete their education up to grade 12. The school offers Bangla among other world languages to give the students a chance to learn a second language and understand another culture.

Extra-curricular activities including sports, music, and art are offered in the form of activities and clubs.

Accreditation

AISD is under review for accreditation by AdvancED,[7] the world's largest education community, serving more than 30,000 public and private schools and districts across the United States and in more than 70 countries that educate over 16 million students. ASIS is currently approved by Cambridge University to offer Ordinary and Advanced Level preparations which mark the completion of 10 and 12th grades under the British system of matriculation. It is under review by the International Baccalaureate Organization [8] to offer the Diploma Program (DP) [9] from grade 9. At present, ASIS is an IB Candidacy School.

Facilities

The campus is located in the heart of North Gulshan and houses 20 classrooms in a stone and brick building. The school also has a library, large lunch room, a play ground, swimming pool, a computer laboratory, and the campus has wireless internet connectivity throughout the building.

Activities

The school consists of a wide range of sports and other activities for the students to participate in, such as basketball, soccer, track, swimming, and badminton. The school a part of the Dhaka International Schools Association (DISA) [12] and participates with other member schools' competitions and tournaments. ASIS also participates annually in Model United Nations programs held at the International School of Dhaka [13] and other area schools.

Its first PTA event, a Fair & Concert was celebrated on 12–13 July 2012 and was a grand success as informed by the many attendees. It annually hosts events for Halloween, a Winter Fair, International Mother Language Day, and Bengali New Year (Pahela Bokshak) among others.
