The town covers an area of 21.49 square kilometres (8.30 sq mi), and has a population of 1,090 (as at 28 August 2006).

Lukavec lies approximately 23 kilometres (14 mi) north-west of Pelhřimov, 48 km (30 mi) north-west of Jihlava, and 71 km (44 mi) south-east of Prague.
